a deadly officer-involved shooting. and now an attempt at damage control. anne makovec on how san francisco police are reaching out to the community. anne. >> reporter: they are going to be holding a community meeting here in the bayview at the operahouse tonight at 6:00. and after all that we saw last night in other neighborhoods, you can see sure that security will be tight. >> it was ridiculous the way they shot that boy and let him bleed like that on the curb. >> reporter: it's been four days since police shot and killed a man in the bayview and emotions are still raw. >> that was just one incidents to bring light to what happens every day. >> reporter: this was the scene after the shooting saturday afternoon caught on several cell phones posted to youtube. 19-year-old kenneth harding had been riding the bus when police got on to check tickets. harding took off. police say he was firing a gun as he ran. they then shot and killed him. >> then they fired in the line of duty where little kids was playing on saturday. that got me upset.

>> reporter: last night about 1250 people protested, marching from dolores park to union square. some throwing smoke bombs and knocking over garbage cans. our cbs 5 photographer was even attacked. that person was arrested as were 34 others. this morning, we found more damage along the route. >> i think it's good to make noise. just for y'all to hear us, our pleas for help, especially among blacks. >> reporter: and tonight a community meeting held by the chief of police at the bayview operahouse on third street starting at 6 p.m. the police have already made several statements that gunpowder was found on harding's hand, that he feels a parolee and wanted for questioning in a murder in seattle. put people we spoke with say the police still took it too far. >> i think that they have the experience in regards to really what our rights are and the fact we're not protected and i

just really am very upset. >> reporter: now, we called the san francisco police obviously this morning. they said they didn't have enough time to make a comment today but they are obviously going to be at the community meeting tonight at 6 p.m. grace. >> thank you. three hikers are presumed dead after they plunged over a 317-foot waterfall at yosemite national park. witnesses say that the visitors crossinged the metal guardrail yesterday, went into the water above vernal falls and then got swept away by the fast-moving river. warning signs are posted in that area. >> i couldn't process why they were in the water when i first saw it, you know, because the current was moving so fast. >> rivers in the area are particularly dangerous now because of the huge winter snowpack. the victims are now identified as 22-year-old [ indiscernible ] and 21-year-old [

indiscernible ] of modesto and 27-year-old nino turlock. this raises the number of water related deaths at yosemite national park to six. arson investigators want to know what caused a fire which destroyed several u-hauls. that fire forced residents out of their homes for a short period. anser hassan explains the possible link between today's fire and gas thieves. >> reporter: this u-haul rental facility in mountain view has had problems in the past but nothing like what happened this morning. a two-alarm fire broke out just after 1 a.m. destroying eight empty trucks and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. >> this location has a history of gas thieves. >> reporter: the store manager said they have been robbed of over $30,000 in gas over the past year. he thinks that may be a link to the morning fire but investigators say it's too early to tell. >> we look at mechanical

failure arson, spontaneous combustion. >> reporter: fire crews had fears that the fire or even the heat would set off this 1,000 gallon propane tank. nearby residents were evacuated. >> we heard things like blowing up and the didn't really know if it was gunshots or someone running into someone but it kept happening i guess it was tires exploding. >> reporter: police and fire have both been giving copies of the surveillance video. they will go through it for clues to help in the investigation. in mountain view, anser hassan, cbs 5. a deadly crash caused a major backup. this is on highway 101 in santa clara today. now that crash near the san tomas expressway involved a motorcycle, a van and another car. the motorcycle rider died at the scene. two lanes of the highway were closed for three hours as emergency crews responded to the scene. the dmv says changes are on the way after it made a big mistake on those disabled parking placards. the department admits it has

issued nearly 60,000 parking placards to people who were confirmed dead. the dmv checks state death records every two years. a cross check of the records shows thousands of placards were issued in error because of mismatched birth dates. president obama is meeting with top democrats at this hour to discuss the debt plan from the "gang of six." now that gang is a group of senators from both parties. the bipartisan plan would cut spending, cap it and change the tax code. social security payments would also be affected by a lower inflation adjustment. >> there's just so many things about this plan that are going to make sense. >> i think we now are seeing the potential for a bipartisan consensus. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: but it could be a tough sell in the house. republicans there already pushed through a different proposal. but that plan will fail in the senate. lawmakers are working to solve the debt crisis before the

august 2 deadline. president obama is moving closer to supporting gay marriage. today, he backed legislation called the respect for marriage act that would over turn the defense of marriage act. the new measure to repeal the federal ban on same-sex marriage was introduced today on capitol hill by senator dianne feinstein. britain's prime minister was in a firing line in a debate over the phone hacking scandal. he is accused of getting too close to some of media mogul rupert murdock's executives at the now defunct "news of the world." as charlie d'agata reports, he denies claims he tried to stop an investigation. >> reporter: the phone hacking scandal has dragged british prime minister david cameron into the fray and into a fight in the house of commons. >> the great responsibility i have is to clear this up mess. >> reporter: he is in the mess. his former communications chief was editor of the "news of the world" when journalists hacked into the voicemails of murder

victims and politicians. now he is under arrest. >> with 2020 hindsight and all that has fall load, i would not have offered him the gop and i expect that he wouldn't have taken it. i would not have offered him the job. >> it's not about hindsight, mr. speaker. it's not about whether mr. colson lied to him. it's about all the information and warnings that the prime minister ignored. >> reporter: cameron fought accusations his staff tried to stop an investigation into the paper's hacking and bribery: the prime minister fought for two hours to distance himself from the worst political crisis he has faced since he took power 15 months ago. >> i'd say that the waters are lapping around his ankle. it will take a while before it drowns him and it probably never will drown him. >> reporter: cameron's also accused of cozying up to former murdoch ceo rebekah brooks. >> i have never held a slumber party or sign her in her

it's the largest new aircraft the dow up about 4 points today. not too bad. it's the largest new aircraft order in aviation history. we are talking about american airlines. it says it will buy at least 460 new aircraft in the next five years. that order is split between airbus and boeing. the more efficient models will cut down on fuel costs. american also announced it will spin off its american eagle regional service as a separate company. delta airlines is cutting service to two dozen u.s. cities. the air carrier blames high fuel costs plus an annual $14 million loss of revenue. most of the cities affected are in the midwest. delta has filed a 90-day notice to terminate service in those sites. no bay area airports though will be affected. here are some stories making headlines all around the bay area. oakland voters will get their say on an $80 a year parcel tax in november. mayor jean quan says the new

tax could bring in $1 1 million a year. it would boost funding for police officers and libraries. at&t got the go-ahead today to build hundreds of utility boxes throughout san francisco. a 6-5 vote from the board of supervisors gives the phone company permission to install up to 726 boxes without extra environment review. the boxes will house tv, phone and internet equipment and will make their debut next week in the richmond district. i have a lot of friends who do this so bewarery of bulk be up on these bargain grocery deals. >> you have probably seen them, stores offering, for example, 10 items for $10? chances are most stores will still offer you the bargain price even if you just buy one or two. retail experts call it the power of suggestion. stores trick you into thinking you're getting a good deal by buying more. >> watch out for that. two bay area sites are serious about fitness. we have a new list giving them

take a look outside here in san francisco. looks unreal compared to the shots we saw last week when we saw plenty of clouds and all gray. not the case today. plenty of blue and temperatures inland warming up to the mid- 90s. around the bay seeing temperatures as high as the 80s and coastline seeing temperatures flirting with 70. tonight pretty pleasant as well, temperatures in the 50s even close to the mid-60s. clear in those inland locations, around the bay seeing temperatures a little cooler there and 50s and 60s. a little bit of low clouds and fog at the coastline. so that area of high pressure that's been bringing that really hot weather to the rest of the country, that's bringing us the pleasantly hot weather here in the bay area. once again warmest day of the week today still pleasant for the next couple of days but we are going to cool off a little bit. rest of the bay area -- excuse me, northern california today seeing nice temperatures, 96 in fresno, 92 sacramento. yosemite 88. 66 eureka. only place on the board with cloud cover. the rest of the northern california area getting plenty

take pictures of the sunset. >> not this crew. sitting for too long is now linked to another major health concern. alzheimer's disease. dr. kim mulvihill with this simple solution. reporter: sitting all day long is risky business. just ask cbs media consultant don. >> number one, if you are sitting all day, you will gain weight. >> reporter: new research shows sis sitting for too long is bad for your belly and for your brain. >> the biggest contributor to alzheimer's disease was actually physical inactivity. >> reporter: dr. deborah barnes of the san francisco va medical center headed up the study. her team discovered over half of all alzheimer's cases could be prevented through lifestyle changes and treatment or prevention of chronic medical conditions. >> there were several things that surprised us. >> the biggest modifiable risk factors in the u.s. are, number one, physical inactivity. two, smoking. and three, depression. >> there is some evidence that

if you treat depression, it could -- it does have improvements of cognitive function. >> reporter: the number of people with alzheimer's disease is expected to triple over the next 40 years but with simple lifestyle changes many of those cases won't happen. >> if people want to change their risk of developing alzheimer's disease right you know what, they need to do is get up off the couch, start exercising more. if they're smoking you need to quit smoking. >> reporter: he says he is not going to take the news sitting down. >> if that's the case, i'm just going to jump up and down all the time. get out of my seat, go get a glass of water, do whatever it takes. >> reporter: dr. kim mulvihill, cbs 5, healthwatch. who needs a car? >> two bay area cities are among the nation's mos walkable according to a new service. new york topped the list, san francisco second. boston and chicago 3 and 4. and
