[ laughter ] >> thanks so much. well, salmonella outbreak has sickened hundreds and foster farms isn't issuing a recall. kpix 5's joe vazquez reports, the company is saying people aren't cooking the chicken properly. >> the number is right there. >> reporter: ed of el sobrante says he bought foster farms raw chicken and was about to prepare dinner when he saw a report on kpix 5. he bought the

same chicken with the same serial numbers as the ones making people sick p6317, 6317- a and another one. >> why do they put stuff out with salmonella? >> reporter: the u.s. department of agriculture's food safety and inspection service issued a public health alert saying 278 people got sick with strains of salmonella heidelberg in 18 states predominantly california and that the illnesses are associated with raw chicken products produced by foster farms at three facilities in california. that chicken is still being sold right now. we found it on the shelves at a local grocery store. that's because no recall has been issued. >> i don't know why they are not recalling it. >> reporter: this uc-berkeley professor, dr. lee riley, says you should chick it long enough to kill bacteria but it's the company's responsibility to make sure meat contaminated with salmonella doesn't get out to the public.

could it be a problem at the plant? >> this same thing happened back in the spring of this year, maybe they have something going on at the plant. i don't know. >> reporter: joe vazquez, kpix 5. >> foster city put out a statement saying it regrets that people got sick and they are taking new safety precautions and they emphasize that you should cook your chicken thoroughly. a major drug seizure at an east san jose home. as kpix 5 reporter keit do reports, santa clara county sheriff's deputies are still looking for the suspected mastermind of that meth ring. >> reporter: as one deputy said, this is big. this is impressive. i have never seen anything like this before. what is this? >> so this is crystal meth. this is in a very, very pure form. >> reporter: after a two-year investigation, undercover deputies with the santa clara county sheriff's office seized

a stash that would make even breaking bad's highsenberg take notice. more than 90% pure. i have a feeling in walter white were to see this, he would be impressed. [ laughter ] >> reporter: there was so much money deputies had to use the dealer's own cash counter to cut down on police overtime. total amount $825,000. but the grand total for it was $2.3 million with the cash and drugs. >> i think there's more than this in the county. what makes me happy is that we have this here and that our investigators did such a good job to take this amount of drugs off the streets. >> reporter: the one pound packages of meth were triple wrapped in tupperware containers foil and ziplok bags tell tale signs it came from mexico. everything was found just laying out in plain view in the hole of this man, 22-year-old jose almos. he is a high level distributor on the run from the good guys

and the bad guys. >> i'm sure he has someone he buys from. this is a big hit to somebody so it will be interesting. that's why we would like to find him get him in custody. >> reporter: for his sake, he better hope the cops find him first. in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. >> deputies recovered two loaded guns including one reported stolen by its owner. fire in san jose blamed on illegal wiring used for an illegal marijuana grow operation. it took a half hour to put it out. it damaged eight home at 7th and -- it damaged a home at 7th and st. james. the cooling-off period ends thursday but it appears transit workers won't strike against bart the moment the period ends. not necessarily good news for the long term. as kpix 5 reporter juliette goodrich reports, there is a potential glitch in the negotiations. >> we will be reading a statement. we will not be taking any questions. we do not want to strike. we want that to be made perfectly clear.

information. 4:39 now. a problem with an old pipe forced an emergency shutdown of a pipe on the peninsula to prevent another disaster like in san bruno. line 147 runs through the neighborhood in san carlos. the problem is an 83-year-old seam weld there. that type of weld has been a problem in the past and pg&e says it did not know the weld even existed on the pipeline until crews discovered it last november while fixing corrosion on the pipe. >> it was thursday that we were handed this email from pg&e officials which contain a statement suggesting by one of their engineers suggesting that san carlos may be the next san bruno. >> those same welds were in the pipeline in san bruno that blew back in september of 2010. pg&e told us the pipeline in san carlos is safe but it will keep testing that line. gas service in that area has not been affected. time now is 4:40. an armed robber no match for

going to play a game. and if it lands on heads, the 20 to the right or killed and if it lands on tails, the 20 to the left are going to be killed. and they got a cone and they flipped it up in the -- coin and they flipped it up in the air, and then right before it landed, he would pick it up and say well, that one didn't count. >> reporter: television cameras rolled as the hostage takers opened fire. three hostages were killed. fearing she was next, lisa remembers being tempted to force her way to freedom. >> and then i was thinking, let me just take a run for this. but then he had that big gun and i was thinking, he is going to shoot me. i'm not going to make this. >> reporter: she didn't have to run thanks to a sharpshooter's aim. >> i heard american voices saying, we've got some more over here. and then they were pushing us and we were all tied up. and like on top of each other. >> reporter: but they were out. no longer held hostage. three of the four gunmen were killed. >> i just remember when i got

untied, i was looking at my hands and i was like just in a state of amazement that i was alive. >> reporter: in sacramento, tony lopez for kpix 5. >> the hostage-takers also made some pretty outlandish demands during the entire ordeal including being taken to thailand, a 50-troop military helicopter, and ancient ginseng root. 4:46. a would-be robber learns you don't mess with a man who is wielding a machete. take a close look at this surveillance video. this is from a new york deli. a man wearing a mask walks in pulls out a gun, demands money from the clerk. the employee pulled out a large machete from under the counter and chases that suspect out of the store. >> oh, my. >> it's probably best to comply with his demands and give the money up rather than take your chances, which, you know, in this case the clerk was very lucky. >> the suspect actually fired one shot into the wall.

he did get away empty-handed. i imagine he won't be going back in there for a while. >> police always say don't fight back. he was lucky. >> empty-handed? because of the machete or -- >> no cash. points to close below 15,000. the nasdaq lost 37. consumer borrowing jumped to a record $3 trillion in august as americans took out more loans for cars and college. but for the third month in a row, americans held back on their credit card use. economists say it's a sign that consumers are still cautious about their spending. bernard madoff's secretary is headed to trial today along with four other former employees of the now disgraced financier. madoff has always insisted he acted alone and is currently serving a 150-year prison sentence for orchestrating a multi-billion-dollar ponzi scheme. prosecutors will try to prove these five former employees not only helped cover up the fraud, but benefited from it. >> three big box retailers are in an iphone price war. walmart is selling the 5c model for $45 after best buy and radioshack announced they would sell the smartphones for 50 bucks. about half the suggested retail price. that's your moneywatch.

as k-p-i-x five's ken basti reports... delta airlines is tight airport security checkpoints apparently no match for a 9-year-old boy. as kpix 5's ken bastida reports, delta airlines is now reviewing its procedures after the kid got on a flight to las vegas without a ticket. reporter: airport officials say the 9-year-old made two trips to the terminal. last wednesday, he took the train to the airport, lifted a stranger's suit case from the baggage carousel, and took it

with him to the "hot dish" restaurant. he had lunch, dropped the bag and skipped out on the check after telling the waitress he was just going to the bathroom. after that, officials say he went home. but surveillance cameras picked him up again the next day being screened at the tsa airport checkpoint. steps away, delta flight 1651 to vegas was boarding. airport officials tell cbs news, the surveillance video shows the boy without a boarding pass, darting past a distracted agent and on to the plane. a security consultant for several major airlines says the situation is not unimaginable. >> you see a 9-year-old child who doesn't look like he is lost doesn't look like he is upset, you tend to assume that he is with somebody that would be required to put him on board an airplane. >> reporter: the flight was halfway to las vegas when the crew realized the boy was not

on their list of unaccompanied minors. they called vegas police, who met the flight and took him into custody. ken bastida, kpix 5. >> the tsa says the boy was properly screened but it's now looking into whether a different sort of barrier might prevent another stowaway incident. well, a surfer attacked by a shark says the great white just came out of nowhere. you can see the bite marks left behind on jay scrivner's surfboard. the shark also bit his thigh. the 45-year-old says it happened while he paddled in a familiar spot up in humboldt county on sunday. he says he remembers trying to punch the shark and missing. but the shark turned away. fellow surface ran to help -- fellow surfers ran to help him. >> everyone was sprinting to the water. the primary concern at that point was stabilizing him, getting emergency vehicles out there and getting him to the hospital. >> signs were put up to warn surfers. another surfer survived a shark attack in the same area last
