i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 6:00 now. did you feel it? an earthquake jolted a large part of the east bay. the magnitude 3.6 quake hit just after midnight. people reported feeling it as far away as napa. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from san ramon near the epicenter. anne. >> reporter: it wasn't a big quake. but it was a 3.6. and plenty of people felt t take a look at the map there on your screen. you can see where the epicenter was just northwest of san ramon on the calaveras fault. at least 3,000 people reported feeling it on the usgs website. we spoke with some of them this morning. >> all of a sudden i know this sounds a little weird, but i felt a little dizzy. and then all of a sudden, i saw my screen started moving back and forth. and i just sat there and i was like, you know, backed up off my chair and lasted for 3 to 5 seconds. >> woke up the dog to start

barking and we had to go and check the bottom because -- of the house because it felt like the house was lifted up and dropped down. >> reporter: social media lit up right after midnight. warriors player andrew bogut tweeted earthquake! ! and with as much trouble as i have had with this newly built home i'm just happy it's still standing. passed the earthquake test. we have a lot of information on ways to prepare and the latest predictions on california's earthquakes on our website, cbssf.com. live in san ramon, anne makovec, kpix 5. police from all over the country are in the bay area today to honor a san jose police officer killed in the line of duty. 38-year-old michael johnson was shot and killed last week. elizabeth will have more on today's funeral procession and where to avoid but first, let's go to kiet do at san jose police headquarters. kiet. >> reporter: good morning. in the next 30 minutes here, we'll see the true meaning of the

brotherhood of police. that is when deputies and officers from all over the region begin arriving here at san jose police headquarters to take over and patrol this city while san jose police officers attend the funeral of michael johnson. we are told that these law enforcement officers will be riding two-man, one of them will be driving, the other one will be navigating these unfamiliar streets. when these officers arrive, this is what they will see, a memorial that grows larger by the day now stretching more than 40 feet long flooded with children's letters, flowers and candles and officers have been returning to this memorial while off duty often bringing with them their families. they told me that they are shocked by all this. deeply touched by the public outpouring of support. now, this was the scene yesterday at s.a.p. center where crews sent the day setting up for the funeral. they are expecting anywhere from 4,000 to 7,000 people to attend today. throughout this entire week, stories are emerging of officer michael johnson's warmth and kindness and dedication of service. this woman's son was steered away from a life of gangs. would you say that officer johnson saved your son's life?

>> i would say so. yes, i would say that he saved my son's life just like he savored the lives of everybody every day when he puts on that uniform and puts on that badge. >> by the way, angela tirado is singing amazing grace today during the funeral. procession begins at 10:00 this morning in los gatos with more details on that, here is liz. >> we have made a map to show you the hot spots to avoid. it should start once the bulk of the commute has wrapped up. the motorcade will start at north santa cruz avenue. you can see the procession. 6:15 north santa cruz avenue and expect traffic tie-ups on the route. the procession will head north on winchester boulevard actually crossing through downtown campbell on its way to the s.a.p. center in downtown san jose. so mass transit might be your best bet. rolling closures, traffic tie- ups, the name of the game, mass transit is encouraged. , the caltrain station diridon station there's also vta, caltrain.

ramon and over 3,000 people felt it according to the usgs website. we spoke with some of them this morning. >> so i was awake at 12:00 and all of a sudden i heard a noise and i felt a shake. my girlfriend woke up at the same time. and we thought something fell. it was like a big shake. it was just, you know, subtle. >> reporter: social media lit up right after that quake. one of our producers brad bellstock tweeted, well, that was fun, the few seconds it lasted, had one glass get knocked on the floor from that earthquake. and sandy kay tweeted everyone is freaking out over the earthquake in san ramon. man up, east bay! it was only a 3.5. we don't trip if it's under 4. it was a 3.6, though. the group that crunches earthquake data did predict an 11% chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger on this quake over the next two decades. of course, with all this earthquake data, you can only

to the governor for telling the entire state needs to conserve water. reservoirs across the northern portions of california have a surplus of water in comparison to last year. and you can say it's all because of that hefty rainfall total we received in december and some earlier runoff from what snow we had. so we have some in the bucket. but we certainly need to conserve and we're hopping for more rain on the way. right now, it's a seamless sky. it's cloudless temperature-wise 40s and 50s. the winds have been dialing back. we'll increase later today out of the northwest 10 to 15. we have temperatures in the 60s along the coast today. it will be warmer today than yesterday. 73 degrees in morgan hill. temperatures topping off in low to mid-70s east of the bay, as well. 70 around vallejo, benicia and martinez. 60s around the north bay coast side to 72 in sonoma. we have that rain forecast that's coming up in just about 6 minutes from now.

out the door, i mentioned highway 4 being really slow. it's because of a crash that's quickly cleared to the right- hand shoulder barely blocking a lane approaching will bow pass but it damaged the commute through pittsburg-bay point and it's always slow in antioch at this time of the morning anyway. here's a look down the south bay just getting word of a new wreck a hit-and-run approaching old oakland road on 101. the altamont pass got backed up. 27 minutes in the red heavy through the livermore valley, as well. and then slow-and-go as you make your way you to the dublin interchange. that wreck approaching the dublin interchange is clear to the right-hand shoulder. a gorgeous view of the sun coming up over the golden gate bridge. traffic busier right now out of sausalito but so far problem- free for your marin county drive. that is "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. one of the notorious chowchilla kidnappers may get out of jail soon. the parole board has granted james schoenfeld parole. he and his brother and another

lesbians. the president of kenya is deploying security forces after gunmen killed 15 people and took hostages. about 9 hours ago gunmen went into a university and started shooting. police have the building surrounded. but the gunmen have hostages with them. investigators believe the attackers are a somali us lambic extremist group. four workers were killed and two others have life- threatening injuries. the result of an explosion and fire on an oil platform in the gulf of mexico. 300 other workers managed to evacuate yesterday. the cause is under investigation. but the pmex oil company says it appears to be related to mechanics. the company said it managed to avert any significant oil spill. mcdonald's giving its workers a big break today. starting july 1, some 90,000 workers at the 1500 eateries the company owns and operates will be paid at least $1 more than the minimum wage. employees with at least a year on the job will get up to 5 days of paid leave a year.

board and see how we're doing so far. dow up by 27 after a flat start. nasdaq meanwhile is moving up by one. and the s&p is up by 2. frank and michelle, back to you. >> it's up. we'll take it after this week, huh? >> a couple of rough days so hoping to get back some of that today in the final deja no kidding. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks, can you. a driverless car developed in silicon valley completed a successful trip from the bay area to new york. delphi automotive's suv finished its 3500-mile journey this week. for most of the trip, the car was driving itself. the vehicle uses gps sensors and cameras to steer through traffic and brake on its own. >> the car actually handled extremely well when it saw other cars around it slowing down and following the lane lines. >> the path to total autonomy on the road faces a major roadblock. most states have yet to pass

legislation to make self- driving cars street legal. there are also questions about insurance coverage and accidents involving such cars. an extra bart track should make the commute easier on the heavily used line between pittsburg and san francisco. a crossover track opened yesterday between the pleasant hill and walnut creek stations. trains moving at high speed can switch over and use the track to get around disabled trains and lets bart use longer trains during peak hours. let see how the roads are doing this morning with elizabeth. >> okay. thanks, guys. we definitely know the commute is picking up steam here. we are starting to get to the heart of things. our accident count is increasing, as well. chp suddenly busy. if you are in brentwood southbound vasco at camino diablo, a wreck is cleared to the right-hand shoulder. sounds like the second crash kind of in a similar area in the brentwood and vasco road. here's a live look out the door san mateo bridge traffic also picking up some steam as you can see there leaving hayward drive time suddenly slow. westbound 92, 19 minutes

between 880 and 101. the most of the traffic is behind the pay gates and on the flat section a little sluggish. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights turned on 5:38 this morning. so they have been on for a while. it's stacked up through the maze and cash, fastrak lanes typical stuff. we haven't seen any incidents at the bay bridge and it's quiet once you get on the span itself. just some of the approaches are beginning to back up but you deal with it every day if you commute into san francisco. nothing new. here's a live look at westbound 580. the drive too many up to 27 minutes now -- the drive time up to 27 minutes. most traffic coming through the livermore valley approaching vasco, just kind of slow-and-go out to the dublin interchange. and then continues that way all the way down through pleasanton and down into the sunol grade. again, no major accidents for that corridor. we saw one by the dublin interchange but they quickly cleared it to the right-hand shoulder and never caused a huge hot spot. south bay different story. this accident still there coming into san jose northbound 101 old oakland road and you can see the traffic jam growing

injuries so far. i'm kiet do live here at san jose police headquarters. in just this next hour, we'll see officers and deputies from all over the region patrol this city as san jose police officers attend the funeral of officer michael brown. they will see a memorial growing throughout the day and night. now stretching more than 40 feet long flooded with children's letters, flowers and candles. officers have told me they are shocked by all this, deeply touched by the public outpouring of support. here at the memorial we also spoke with a woman by the name of angela tirado who says officer johnson talked to her son steering him away from gang life. would you say he saved your son's life? >> yes. i would say he saved my son's life. just like he saves the lives of everybody every day when he puts on that uniform and puts on that badge. >> reporter: the procession begins at 10:00 this morning in los gatos going north on santa cruz avenue which then turns
