and i'm julie watts. kenny choi is off thi good morning, everyone. it is friday, november 25. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm julie watts. kenny choi is off today. we're on storm watch. a calm start this morning but hi-def doppler radar is tracking rain heading into the bay area this weekend. i'll be timing out the rain for you coming up here in just a bit. but we'll be starting off with roqui this morning and a check of our traffic. roqui, how are the roads? >> thank you, julie. like i said earlier in the show, i think there's more people in line trying to shop than on the roads. from marin to san francisco on the golden gate bridge, 580 to golden gate toll plaza will take you 14 minutes. you can count the cars as they

head in now. moving to the bay bridge toll plaza, looking pretty good heading into downtown san francisco. now is the time. carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will just take you 19 minutes. also, in san francisco, today parking meters and seven-day street sweeping areas are in force. so definitely keep that in mind. we don't want you getting any parking tickets but residential permit parking is not being enforced. moving over to the san mateo bridge here from hayward to foster city, that will take you a quick 13 minutes between 880 and 101. and then to the south bay all green so that means 101, 280, 87 are all smooth commutes right now in the area. 1 p.m. islanders and sharks playing, may cause delays. a south san francisco police officer is in the hospital and his attacker is jailed this morning. police say the suspect caused a disturbance on grand avenue. kpix 5's maria medina is live in south san francisco with an

update on the condition of the officer. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. yeah. the identity of the officer not being released this morning but he had surgery after the attack that left him in critical condition. this started yesterday afternoon around 2:00 on grand avenue. someone waved down the officer to report a disturbance. the officer found the suspect right away who is luis ramos correa. he allegedly wasn't cooperating so the officer called for backup. but ramos correa took off on his skateboard and at some point during the chase allegedly turned around and hit the officer in the head and knocked him out. another officer arrested the suspect. the mayor said, quote, this is so disheartening to hear of this incident in a city such as south san francisco. we are a tight-knit community with a police force that's our family. our thoughts and prayers are with this officer and his family. as for the officer hit by the skateboard, again, necessary

critical condition after surgery. he had major head trauma. live in south san francisco, maria medina, kpix 5. santa clara county sheriff's deputies are still trying to track down two inmates who escaped from the main jail. rojelio chavez and laron campbell and two others broke out of the san jose facility wednesday night. the other two were captured and are back in custody. investigators say the men sawed through the steel bars of a second floor window and used a rope made of bedding and clothing to rappel to the ground. >> the fact that these bars were cut the way they were, um, it wasn't something that they just, you know, thought of in a minute. it's something that probably took them some previous planning. >> investigators say the inmates have long criminal histories and are considered potential threats to public safety. right now, chopper 5 is live over livermore where shoppers are already busy doing their thing at the outlet

stores this black friday. expect heavy traffic today. and really around all the major bay area shopping centers in livermore. kpix 5's anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning. happy black friday. things are under way at the san francisco premium outlets which are in livermore. you can see the traffic again from chopper 5 even getting to this area and the parking lots are pacific. the outlets opened at 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon. >> 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, whoo!! [ applause ] >> reporter: and they're off. black friday still one of the busiest shopping day of the season. 137million people plan to shop at some point over this weekend. and that means store employees have to be ready for action.

we spoke with one this morning. >> so it's been pretty busy and we have been running back and forth folding and stuff. it's been busy. >> reporter: what do you think about working on the holiday, is it okay with you? >> yeah. yeah. you get paid more. so, yeah, it's okay with me, ha. >> reporter: yeah, and you have extra money that you can shop with. can't complain about that too much. the outlets are open until 10 p.m., 31 hours straight. if you are looking to come here, take a cab from another location. the outlet folks are also recommending that you park at las casitas college and they have a shuttle that comes here because parking is at a premium. live in livermore, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> before we let you -- [ indiscernible ] before we let you go, we have to know, are you planning on doing a little shopping of your own? >> reporter: good question. i was sort of getting energized just being here this morning.

and then i -- i, um, looked on a website for the outlets to find out some information about the actual facility and suddenly i find myself signing up for some vip insider deal and i'm getting emails with extra discounts. so i think it's safe to say i'll be shopping eventually today. back to you. >> michelle and i will be sending you our lists, thank you very much. >> i already did. [ laughter ] as you saw, if you are heading throughout to shop, you won't be the only one. the national retail federation estimates more than 137 million people plan to shop this weekend including yesterday and black friday through sunday. but before you go to the mall, consumer experts suggest creating a budget and using store apps to help you save cash. while shoppers are coughing up green for black friday sales, bay area marijuana dispensaries are offering green specials. dispensaries in san francisco the east bay and san jose are giving one day discounts. it's called green friday. and they are hoping to make it

a tradition once marijuana is officially legal in the state. now, if you want to find some of the best black friday deals on some traditional gifts we have posted a guide on our website, at cbssf.com/thanksgiving. now to politics. president-elect donald trump says he is working hard despite the holiday. he took to twitter saying he is trying to persuade carrier, an air-conditioning company, to keep 1400 jobs in the u.s. instead of sending them to mexico. the company confirms it is in discussions with the incoming administration. trump's adviser kellyanne conway is also weighing in on 2012 gop nominee mitt romney. he is on the short list to be secretary of state. despite his fierce criticism of trump during the campaign. conway tweeted, the potential pick has led to a deluge of messages warning against romney. she then posed a list of attributes for a good secretary of state being loyal one of them. >> conway's response comes as a

recount effort is picking up steam. a lawyer for the green party candidate stein says she will request a statewide recount in wisconsin by today's deadline. she has raised more than $4 million for the recount cost. stein is also looking into requesting recounts in michigan and in pennsylvania. this after reports that voting security experts alert hillary clinton's campaign to the possibility of hacks in some counties. >> what we also know is that the equipment that we used much of it is not just open to hacks, it basically invites hacks and malfeasance, tampering, human error, et cetera. some of the voting machines in use in wisconsin, for example, have actually been prohibited in the state of california because they basically have been proven to be wide open to tampering. >> clinton supporters are also calling on her campaign to call for a recount in those three states.

so far, clinton has refused. but on twitter, she is giving a shoutout to supporters in the recent presidential campaign. she tweeted this image of a collection of homemade thank you signs on the corner of her street. the message said thank you to all of you who did this. clinton has had a low profile since her stunning lost to president-elect donald trump. the election was two weeks ago but ballots are still being counted in santa clara county. several local races are still too close to call. an automatic manual recount is set to start on monday for 10 election contests in the county. it's a sad day for fans of 1970s television. florence henderson has died. henderson was best known as the mother on the comedy series, the brady bunch. but she also had a successful singing career with a talk show hostess and much more. she was active in recent weeks but was hospitalized wednesday. she reportedly had heart problems although the official

they arrested were receiving their orders from isis. they were arrested this week in the cities of strasburg and another. paris officials are on high alert since last year's attack killed 130 people. some of the targets were disneyland, paris and the famed champs elysees. right now many in central america are bracing for flooding and mudslides and hurricane otto barrels up the coast. people are unloading docked boats to get them out of the water. the national hurricane center says otto is the southernmost hurricane on record. on land, people are stocking up on food and taking shelter. hev and 10-mile-per-hour winds are expected all day. in el salvador residents are assessing damage this morning after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit the pacific coast. huge waves on the shore this morning, there was even a tsunami warning. that has been canceled. according to the el salvador civil defense agency there were

no immediate reports of damage or injuries. firefighters are on the scene of a blaze at an apartment building in new york city. it's on the top floor of a five- story building. so far no word on any injuries or the cause. it is 6:15. let's check the roads and the weather. >> i think there's more traffic in the mall than on the roads! >> so i guess the benefit of doing a black friday so early is that you miss all the traffic. but then you have to wait in line. >> there's one benefit. let's take a look first at mass transit. bart all trains no delay, ace all trains have no service. muni has no express buses. and caltrain is on a saturday schedule. the bay bridge toll plaza looking good heading into downtown san francisco. carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze19

minutes. then heading into san francisco today keep in mind parking meters and seven-day street sweeping areas will be in force. that residential permit parking is not enforced. okay. moving on now to also in san francisco critical mass bike ride at 6 p.m. this evening, union square tree lighting ceremony begins also at 6 p.m. but that union square closure starts at 3 p.m. so delays in the city today and this evening. here's the golden gate bridge from marin into san francisco, 580 to golden gate toll plaza will take 14 minutes. >> we are tracking rain on hi- def doppler this morning. the rain right now though still well to our north. this weather system is hammering the pacific northwest. we'll see showers over the northern portion of the state today. most of the bay area, even the north bay, staying dry for most of the day. it's tomorrow that all of us will see rain from this weather system. now keep in mind, this is a system well to our north. cold air mass associated with this not like the last one that

dipped down to the south and tapped into the subtropical moisture. so we're not going to see impressive rainfall totals this time around. but we are going to see rain and certainly unsettled weather for most of the day saturday. futurecast painting the picture on friday, south bay still seeing some clear skies but increasing clouds from north to south throughout the morning and it will be gray for most of the day today. shower chances only for the north bay for much of the day today. now, overnight tonight, watch as that front the heavy rain passes through. by tomorrow morning here we are at 9 a.m. we do see scattered showers around the bay. and then very much unsettled throughout the day on saturday, scattered showers off and on. another wave of rain moves through late saturday into sunday and then pause it here at about 11:00 on sunday morning. and notice we're mostly dry, clearing out from north to south. so sunday is drier. saturday, probably going to be wet with showers off and on throughout the day. your weather headlines? mainly dry today black friday. so today might be the day to

put up your lights. steady rain though for saturday morning, maybe some breaks midday t and then another round of rain late on saturday into early sunday. we'll be drying out though on sunday. sunrise today 7:01. sunset at 4:53 this evening. and here's a look what to expect as you head out the door early this morning. maybe going for a jog or heading out to the black friday sales. temperatures are on the chilly side. in fact livermore near 37 degrees right now. 42 for concord. 47 in oakland. santa rosa 41. 43 in san jose. high temperatures later today, definitely on the cool side, as well. topping out in the low 60s for the warmest locations around the bay. we are talking 64 for san jose. 62 in livermore. and 58 in santa rosa. a quick look ahead to the weekend, again, rain on saturday. but looking dry on sunday for the raiders game a mixture of sun and clouds. 59 degrees. and the extended forecast shows really saturday is the primary rain day throughout the

forecast. today increasing clouds. tomorrow rain. sunday maybe a lingering shower for the morning hours. and then we are drying out monday, tuesday through wednesday. thank you. well, in other news, new york couple was in for a huge thanksgiving surprise. and it came on the side of a highway. >> therese and austin thomas were rushing to the hospital yesterday when the baby started coming in the middle of traffic. austin got on the phone with paramedics who walked him through the delivery. >> saw the baby head, the baby head was out so he was saying to me, listen, the baby is going to slippery, catch it, don't let it fall. you have to catch the baby. >> the pressure! therese gave birth to a girl. firefighters arrived a short time later to check vitals and cut the umbilical cord. the new family is doing great in the comfort of a hospital room. >> beautiful baby at that.

from the n-f-l... washington at dallas. first half action with the cowboys it was thanksgiving but the 49ers and raiders didn't take the day off. they both practiced before enjoying their day with their families. meanwhile, other teams took part of a football holiday tradition. andrew luck out with a concussion. scott told seen starting in luck's place. but indy was no match for the steelers. ben roethlisberger and brown connected three times including this 33-yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter. pittsburgh wins 28-7 to take first place in the afc north. the cowboys redskins rivalry never takes a break not even on holidays. dallas leading by 7 in the first half. jack prescott finds williams who does a great job to keep both of those feet inbounds for the touchdown. the cowboys win 31-26 for their tenth straight win. and the lions also topped the vikings.

francisco premium outlets in livermore. shoppers have been out all night. they opened at 3 p.m. yesterday. holiday sales will be up 3.6% for december and november up from last year. black friday vying with the saturday before christmas as the busiest shopping day of the year. >> are you shopping for yourself? >> christmas. you have to get ready. >> reporter: he has been here for 15.5 hours. a sales clerk said they met their goals within a few hours. the outlet is opened until 10:00 tonight so that's 31 hours straight. the parking lot is packed. so takes a taxi or uber or they

the high sierra or going to visit family in the sacramento area, keep in mind we are seeing some of that valley fog. so reduced visibilities there. high temperatures today staying on the cool side. topping out near 60 degrees for most spots. have your full forecast and timing out the rain for you coming up in just a bit. first here's a check of traffic. >> thank you, julie. it is 6:35. let's head to the nimitz freeway if you are traveling along 880, northbound to downtown oakland, looking good right now. looks good in both directions 238 in san leandro to the maze will just take you 16 minutes. now moving over to southbound 880 to the san mateo bridge, here's a live look at that. hayward to foster city is a quick 13 minutes between 880 and 101. and then in the south bay, how are your roads here? northbound 101, 280/680 split to highway 237 that will just take you 11 minutes. downtown san jose northbound 280 is a quick 11 minutes, as well. guadalupe parkway 8 minutes. so this is really good news here for your morning but i can imagine all these roads will look quite different later in

the evening. new york islanders versus san jose sharks at 1 p.m., at the s.a.p. center today in san jose. keep in mind this will combine with that afternoon shopping traffic. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. a south san francisco officer is in critical condition after an attack with a skateboard. the assault happened yesterday afternoon on grand avenue. kpix 5's maria medina is live in south san francisco with the new information. >> reporter: yeah, michelle. the identity of the officer unknown this morning but what we do know is that he underwent surgery after that attack that left him in critical condition as you said. now, this all started yesterday afternoon at 2:00 on grand avenue after someone waved down the officer to report some sort of disturbance. now, the officer found the suspect who we now know is luis ramos correa right away. he allegedly wasn't cooperating so the officer called for backup. but ramos correa took off on his skateboard and at some point during the chase he allegedly turned around and hit

realizing that it was over in the best possible sense. >> investigators are looking for the alleged kidnappers, two latina women who are driving a dark colored suv. they are armed and dangerous. motive unclear. a house in modesto goes up in flames. among the rubble the bodies of two children and their grandparents. this morning neighbors are trying to make sense of the tragedy. no word on the cause of the explosion. autopsy be will be performed monday. good morning and welcome back. time now 6:42. no, this is not a thomas kinkade painting! this is actually san francisco with real lights and we're watching sunrise this morning. more coming up. charges will be announced today against the suspect accused of killing a police officer in detroit. officer collin rose was on patrol tuesday when the suspect shot him in the head. the five-year veteran of the force died of his injuries the following day. it's supposed to be a joyful tradition before thanksgiving dinner. but a kids holiday football tournament in kentucky turned deadly after gunshots tore through the crowd. a hail of bullets left two people dead and six others

injured as the crowd took cover. it happened yesterday afternoon at the juice bowl in louisville. an annual football tournament. kids parents and neighbors gathered for the event but violence interrupted the festivities. >> most people were here having a good time as they do most of the time but unfortunately this tragic situation has happened. >> the ages of the victims not yet released. police say the gunman got away and the motive for the shootings is unclear. the president-elect donald trump holds stock in a company that's building the dakota access oil pipeline. opponents of the pipeline are raising concerns now that donald trump's investments may affect decisions he might make on the project when he's inaugurated. trump's 2016 federal disclosure forms show he owns 15 to $50,000 in stock in the texas based energy transfer partners. >> and federal rule meant to expand the number of u.s. workers eligible for overtime pay is now in jeopardy. the obama administration put the rule in place but a federal judge in texas issued a preliminary injunction stopping the rule from taking effect. it won't take effect on december 1. the judge based the decision on two cases brought by business groups and 21 other states challenging the rules validity. there is a patents for flexible phone that can fold in half and it kind of looks like a flip phone. it's true. apple is known for filing for patents that never see the light of day but they might be thinking about it for the future. all right. 6:44. let's check the roads with roqui. how's it looking? >> thank you, michelle. yeah, it's looking good so far, so good. let's take a look at mass transit where we have some updates. bart all trains no delay, ace all trains have no service.

going to tap into the subtropical moisture that we saw from our last big round of rain so we are not going to see impressive rainfall totals but we'll see a largely soggy day on saturday. timing it out with futurecast, starting out this morning increasing clouds ahead of the front. and then we could see some showers in the north bay today. and certainly overnight tonight i think the later we get the more likely we are to see some showers in the north bay. it's overnight though watch this as a front passes through with the heaviest rain. now i'm pausing it around 10:00 tomorrow morning and we see scattered showers very unsettled tomorrow. certainly a cloudy day definitely a damp feel out there. keep the umbrella handy. another wave of rain moves through late saturday and possibly lingering into early sunday but by about 11:00 on sunday we should be for the most part pretty dry and then increasing sunshine throughout the day sunday so the second half of the day on sunday you will get some sun. weather headlines, mainly dry today. steady rain though for the first part of saturday. and then another round of rain late saturday into early

sunday. and then we will dry on out for sunday into next workweek. sunrise today 7:01. sunset this evening at 4:53. and as you head out this morning, take a look at this. a beautiful view of the bay bridge as we await sunrise this morning. temperatures are a little chilly. in fact, in livermore right now folks heading out to the outlet to get a little shopping in, 37 degrees so certainly going to want a jacket as you head from the car to the mall probably not going to need it inside. concord at 42. 47 in oakland. 43 in san jose and 41 in santa rosa at this hour. later today, temperatures do stay on the cool side once again. topping out in the upper 50s to low 60s, 64 san jose. 62 in fremont. 58 santa rosa. 59 in napa. and a look at the extended forecast shows again increasing clouds today. tomorrow is our rain day. so it's not the day you want to plan to put up the christmas lights. sunday, however, likely will be a good day a couple of lingering showers in the morning hours and then drying out with some sunshine for the second half of the day on

good morning. welcome back. time now 6:53. what a beautiful shot to be waking up to on this black friday morning as we await sunrise here and, ah, just about 10 minutes. we are are looking at a dry day today but notice increasing clouds, you can tell from this shot over san francisco, rain is on the way heading our way saturday. in fact, much of the day saturday does look to be soggy. so today is the day you might want to get out, um, run off all those thanksgiving calories [chuckling] and certainly a lot of folks out there shopping, some great shopping weather. so grab a jacket. it's a little chilly to start this morning. temperatures in the 30s and 40s around the way this morning. i'll have your full forecast coming up in a bit. we'll time out the rain over the next couple of days. ive things to know at the :55. first south san francisco police are investigating the

attempted murder of a police officer. the weapon, a skateboard. the skateboarder bashed a responding officer in the head and knocked him out. he is in critical condition. the suspect is in custody. a shasta county mom whose disappearance made national headlines is alive. she was released by her captors left bound by the side of the road in yolo county. the kidnappers are at large. investigators are looking for two latina women driving a dark colored suv. florence henderson has died. henderson was best known as the mother on the comedy series the brady bunch. she was active in recent weeks but entered the hospital wednesday. she was 82. president-elect donald trump adviser kellyanne conway is weighing in on 2012 gop nominee mitt romney. he is on the short list to be secretary of state despite his fierce criticism of trump during the campaign. conway treated the potential pick has led to a deluge of messages warning against

romney. and a lawyer for green party candidate jill stein says she will request a statewide recount in wisconsin today. she raised more than $4 million for the recount cause. i'm anne makovec live in livermore at the premium outlets where black friday shopping is well under way. in fact, people have been shopping here since 3:00 yesterday afternoon. black friday still one of the busiest shopping days of the year even as the start of the holiday season edges ever earlier. around 137 million people plan to shop at some point over the thanksgiving holiday season. that's according to the national retail federation. that includes online and in store shopping and that means store employees have to be ready for action. we spoke with one this morning. >> it's fun. i mean, it's potluck so it's the family atmosphere so i mean i think it's fun. yeah. >> reporter: these outlets are going to be open until 10:00 tonight. that means they have been open

at that point for 31 hours straight. the parking lot is full out here. so as you know, if you plan to do any black friday shopping, be ready for crowds. live in livermore, anne makevoc, kpix 5. thank you, anne. it is now 6:56. let's take a look at our bay area roads. if you are heading out for black friday, looking good but i guess you can call this the calm before the storm. look at the golden gate bridge here looking beautiful, 580 to the golden gate toll plaza will just take you 14 minutes. and then moving over to the bay bridge toll plaza, carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you 19 minutes. those metering lights are not on so you don't have to worry about delays heading past the tolls. now, also in san francisco, today in force are parking meters and seven-day street sweeping areas so don't get a ticket on black friday. and this evening in san francisco, keep in mind critical mass bike ride starts at 6 p.m. and union square tree lighting ceremony begins at 6 p.m., as well. however, the union square tree lighting closures start at 3

dry today. your black friday steady rain though beginning saturday morning and scattered showers off and on throughout saturday. another round of rain late saturday lingering into early sunday. and then we do dry out for your sunday. how much rain? not a whole lot at first. less than a quarter inch to start the day saturday. but by the end of the day saturday, early-morning sunday, we could see upwards of maybe three-quarters inch for the north bay and, um, maybe three- tenths farther south. so again, rain this weekend, today though dry. so great black friday shopping weather. you can leave the umbrellas at home today but pack them tomorrow. >> that's good advice. and if black friday shopping isn't enough this weekend there's plenty going on to help you get into the holiday spirits. the cow palace will be transformed into victorian london for the great dickens christmas fair. complete with authentic london street scenes, music, theater and food. it starts at 10 a.m. and runs through mid-december. 3, 2, 1, whoo! >>

so beautiful. in san francisco, you can head on down to ghirardelli square for the 52nd annual tree lighting ceremony. it starts at 4:00 to 8:00. the three will be lit at 7 p.m. and there will be live music and entertainment for the entire family. so enjoy. and the snow arrives today in san rafael. a manmade sledding hill has more than 40 tons of snow. you can find it on "a" street between 4th and 5th avenues. it's part of the city's 34th annual parade of lights. the parade starts at 5:30. looks like fun. you don't have to drive three hours to tahoe. there's the snow. >> you see the dickens christmas fair? i did a live shot with them last season and i did the entire thing in a british accent. >> really? >> it was so much fun. >> we just love the holiday. >> you just have to go, it's so much fun. >> very nice.
