and i'm kenny choi. here in the bay area and around the u-s, low-w ning to strike t good morning, it's tuesday, november 29. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. here in the bay area and around the u.s., low wage workers are planning to strike this morning in a push for better pay. their goal, get the federal minimum wage to reach $15 an hour. kpix 5's jackie ward is live at an oakland mcdonald's, where workers are ready to strike. >> reporter: kenny, "fight for 15" organizers just told me that about a couple hundred protestors will soon be making their way down international boulevard completely closing one lane and then they will be shutting down the intersection of international and 98th boulevard. so traffic if you need to get out the door i would absolutely head out now because around 6:10 a.m., protestors will be taking it over for what they are calling a freeze program. as kenny said this is part of a national movement. millions of workers are demanding $15 an hour for federal minimum wage. 340 mcdonald's restaurants will be the major hubs for the

protest but this is affecting more than fast food chains. people who work in healthcare, higher education and even as baggage handlers at major airports will join in the "fight for 15". uber workers will be protesting today, as well. they will be expressing their demands at sfo at noon. organizers recognize that the minimum wage is or will be $15 in places like new york and california but they say they won't settle until it becomes a federal standard. even then, they say $15 isn't liveable but it's a start. we'll check in later to see what's going on with this intersection and where the protestors are. jackie ward, kpix 5. president-elect donald trump is announcing more cabinet picks. today congressman tom price of georgia was selected as secretary of health and human services. price is a former orthopedic surgeon and an outspoken critic of obamacare. >> ever since president obama and the democrat-led congress

passed obamacare six years ago, the law's failures have been piling up. >> while in congress, price has plans to replace obamacare including tax credits for buying private policies and putting money in health savings accounts. donald trump is expected to meet with mitt romney for a second time today to discuss the secretary of state job. during the campaign, romney was a fierce critic of the president-elect. other top contenders for secretary of state include former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, general john kelly of the marines, and former cia director david petraeus. petraeus met with the president- elect inside trump tower yesterday. petraeus resigned in 2012 after he admitted to divulging classified information to his biographer, while the two were having an extramarital affair. trump is also scheduled to meet with tennessee senator bob corker today. yesterday michigan certified its election results making trump the official winner of the state. it's been three weeks since

the election but some races are still too close to call in the bay area. kpix 5's anne makovec is live in santa clara county to tell us more about the recount process. >> reporter: big operation in san jose for 10 election contests that are still up for grabs here throughout santa clara county. a couple of big ones. the police chief of the city of santa clara michael sellers, versus sergeant pat nikolai. sell assister ahead by 68 votes. another race for city council district in san jose district 8 the person to succeed vice mayor rose herrera. right now sylvia arenas is ahead of jim nguyen by 88 votes. this is the first year of a pilot program in santa clara county that requires recounts when the margin of victory is

within a .5% of the total number of ballots cast or 25 votes for the candidate or ballot measure. so they will have a lot of people at the registrar's office to count for another week. anne makovec, kpix 5. let's check the roads with roqui. >> we have a fatal crash to report in san jose right now. monterey road at capitol expressway shut down due it a fatal crash with a car and pedestrian. vta is rerouting bus service in the area. and also you'll want to avoid it if this is part of your morning commute. we suggest you go ahead and take "senter road" as your alternate. and we'll let you know when it's completely cleared and opened up. let's move over now to the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. that's going to be a slow community from 880 to 101 just about 20 to 25 minutes. and then the bay bridge toll plaza heading into downtown san francisco will take 20 minutes from the maze to downtown. and then let's take a live look

at the nimitz freeway. looking good in both directions. 238 in san leandro to the maze will take you 15 minutes and then i want to warn you again as jackie mentioned, that 98th and international intersection will be shut down due to protests so avoid that area if it's part of your morning commute. roberta, i don't do snow and i don't do surfing. >> okay. she doesn't do snow and this is coming from the woman who has the largest uggs collection west of the mississippi. [ laughter ] >> and if you don't do surfing no problem there a lot of people won't be in the water today. high surf advisory in place. i just took a look at the conditions in pacifica. linda mar, it looks like we have the swells building 8 to 9 feet. they will go up to 14 feet today, breakers at 17. this will cause some very long waves to run up on the shore, beach erosion anticipated around the pacifica area, as well. dangerous rip currents. please be very mindful of that. no fishing on the jetties today. it's a cool start to the day, downright chilly! temperatures near the water 51 degrees in san francisco.

a bit of a breeze there mixing up the atmosphere. otherwise when we shut off the wind it's in the 30s throughout the tri-valley. 37 degrees in pleasanton back through dublin into san ramon and danville. 42 degrees in santa rosa with a north wind at 10. otherwise again we have high 30s in concord, clayton and walnut creek backing into antioch. satellite and radar, coast is clear. the only stratus i could pick up is way over there in the central valley in the form of fog that's developing around sacramento, stockton, davis and merced. today 50s and 60s. bright sunshine. won't be as brisk today as yesterday. those winds out of the north 5 to 10. 60 in campbell, cupertino, san jose alum rock, willow glen. now we're talking about temperatures east of the bay pretty much in the high 50s. 60 in fairfield. otherwise upper 50s in vallejo, benicia, martinez and american canyon. through antioch into brentwood.

60 in petaluma. full forecast at 18 minutes after the hour of 6:00. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren is blasting wells fargo. it comes as the bank announced it will force customers caught up in the fake account scandal to go to outside arbitration rather than allowing them to sue. yesterday, representatives from wells fargo were on the hot seat in sacramento. the bank has admitted employees created millions of unauthorized accounts. nearly 500 managers were fired for their roles in the scandal. but state senator steve glazer believes the problem goes all the way to the top. >> it was not a handful of renegade lower level bankers going rogue to bilk unsuspecting customers. this appears to have been company culture an atmosphere of greed pushed from the top. >> senator glazer says he wants wells fargo to provide a blueprint on how the bank plans to clean up the mess. a chartered plane carrying

the federal minimum wage. jackie, what' back to jackie ward in oakland with more on protests getting under way over the federal minimum wage. jackie. >> reporter: what is the latest on this "fight for 15" dollars? >> reporter: well, about a couple hundred protestors just got to 98th and international as you can see behind me. they have closed down the entire intersection. there's a pretty heavy police presence here. they have blocked off corners of 98th and the international. these people are here to "fight for 15". they want a $15 federal minimum wage. i spoke to minimum wage employees in california, they make above the $10 minimum wage we have right now but they say it's not enough.

they need this to be a nationwide raise. they are fighting for millions of people who are struggling right now to pay for child care, go to work, and they are doing so in a major fashion. they are holding this protest now. people are sitting down on the ground. this is a nationwide effort not just for california. right now they say they will hold a brief program. they will speak to the crowd and chant. i don't know how long this will go on for. but oakland police have closed down this entire intersection. so expect to avoid it. it's part of the morning commute. jackie ward, kpix 5. authorities are trying to figure out why a somali refugee carried out a bloody attack at the ohio state university yesterday. university police officers who shot and killed the 18 is

drawing praise for preventing things getting worse. hena daniels has more. >> reporter: students at ohio state university came together in prayer last night. many had memories of mon's campus rampage fresh on their minds. >> classroom in the basement, scared because we didn't know much. >> reporter: people on campus barricaded themselves in classrooms moments after police say abdul razak ali artan intentionally rammed his car into a group of people outside. >> i think i saw three or four students in here. >> reporter: authorities say the somali refugee then got out of the vehicle with a butcher knife and began stabbing onlookers. university officer is credited with ending the chaos. >> our officer was on scene in less than a minute and he ended this situation in less than a minute. >> reporter: artan had recently transferred to ohio state after obtaining his associate's degree from a community college in the spring. so far, officials have searched artan's car and apartment

complex. they are investigating the incident as a possible terror attack. hena daniels, cbs news. >> now, those injured in the attack include an ohio state faculty member four graduate students and three undergraduate students. all classes are back in session today. had a member of san francisco's board of supervisors plans to announce today a $5 million proposal to provide legal representation to undocumented immigrants. david campos calls it the first test of whether san francisco will stick to its pledge to remain a sanctuary city when donald trump becomes president. he plans to provide more details at a news conference today at noon. a san francisco startup must pay the california department of insurance $7 million for licensing violations. the company provides online employee benefits and pay role software for small businesses. it also acts as an insurance broker to sell group health and life insurance.

the state says that the company allowed unlicensed agents to sell insurance. starting today santa clara county introduces carpooling apps to ease gridlock in the area. the cta has partnered with the 511 regional carpool program to release multiple apps that link coworkers who are heading to their jobs by similar routes. the county is throwing several events to promote the initiative and some of them include $5 discounts on your first ride. >> wow! >> we can all meet at one point. >> or pick up roqui. >> bart doesn't run at 2:30. >> even if it did -- >> not me. >> i will believe it when i see it. let's get a check of traffic. let's head to san jose where we have this fatal crash to report.

at monterey road this is shut down right at capitol expressway and this is due to a car versus a pedestrian and vta is rerouting bus services in the area. we have a couple of -- i just tweeted out which buses service will be rerouted to check on that here. you want to avoid the area so take "senter road" as your alternate and this should be clear up around 8 a.m. but we'll definitely keep a look out. 880 to 101 will take 20 minutes. some slowdowns now heading across the span of the san mateo bridge. and then the bay bridge same story we have some traffic backing up to the maze. the maze to downtown will take you up to 20 minutes, as well. to the altamont pass traffic wow you are moving at just 9 miles per hour after 205 here north tracy boulevard along 580 westbound to the altamont pass will take you up to 45 minutes and traffic speeds up, up to 29 miles per hour when you hit north flynn road and through livermore where it frees up

here's live traffic along the dublin interchange altamont pass to 680 will take you 16 minutes. roberta, how's the weather looking? >> it is so pretty outside but it's deceiving because with all the clear skies, we have some very chilly temperatures. so far this morning, some of the coldest temperatures so far this autumn season. it's a cool location. santa rosa is pick up a north wind at 10 and when you have that wind it mixes up the atmosphere so not as chilly. satellite-radar suggests that the coast is clear. fog in the central valley. we have area of low pressure well to the north of us. you can see it looks like a giant comma. but it's take the course of this very vigorous jet stream that's veering to the north of bay area due to the huge dome of high pressure that's building in. providing us with dry skies today. albeit chilly. here's your futurecast for lunchtime today.

protestors marched down international boulevard to the 8th and international in front -- 98th and international in front of the mcdonald's and closed down the intersection. oakland police is diverting traffic. it's part of a bigger scene nationally today. fast food workers from restaurants and the airports around the country will be walk out of the job today as part of the latest "fight for $15" protest. mcdonald's and 340 cities are expected to be the prime rally targets and to show support, baggage handlers and cabin cleaners at o'hare and logan airports will demonstrate. we spoke to a man who works at taco bell. >> there are plenty of states not on the way. so right now, we are in a prime position to ensure that people -- other states follow california. >> reporter: today marks the fourth anniversary of "fight

for $15" but this is the first "fight for $15" protest since donald trump was elected our next president. the last year he said worker wages were too high. this year, he said minimum wage should be raised under the direction of individual state leadership. here in california there's a plan in place to get minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022 but that's not why these people are out here. these people are out here for a national cause. they claim even $15 isn't a livable wage. but at least it's a start. in oakland, jackie ward, kpix 5. oakland city council members will consider a football stadium proposal aimed at keeping the raiders in the bay area. during that meeting this afternoon, the plan involves an investment group organized by former nfl player ronnie lott. mayor libby schaaf says that taxpayer money will not be used to help cover stadium costs. meanwhile raiders owner mark davis wants to move the team to las vegas. the state of nevada has already approved a plan to help finance

blocking a lane as well that will affect your commute across the span. let's move now to the south bay near san jose where we have a fatal crash to report between a car and pedestrian. it's shutting down monterey road at capitol expressway. chp says this will be opening up around 8 a.m. but, of course, we won't know until then. we'll let you know as soon as it gets reopened. as your alternate take "senter road." thank you. three suspects are now in custody in connection with a deadly shooting in union city. police arrested them about a block from the scene last night. it all started outside the texas roadhouse restaurant in the union landing shopping center. police say the suspects shot a total of three people. one of them died and another is in serious condition. in castro valley, police are investigating a possible drive-by shooting last night in a quiet neighborhood on wilson avenue. officers say someone found the

37-year-old victim in the road. they tried cpr but he died. police are searching for surveillance video to help find the suspect. antioch health officials are trying to figure out how a holiday dinner left three people dead and several others sick an trying to find those with symptoms after thanksgiving dinner at american legion hall. >> we are interviewing people who are sick and also trying to find people who may have been have symptoms but didn't seek healthcare. >> so far three people who fell sick after the dinner have been released from the hospital. for now officials are not releasing the names of the attendees who died. donald trump is under fire for making more allegations of voter fraud. yesterday, green party candidate jill stein filed a lawsuit in pennsylvania seeking to force a recount there. she is also asking for recounts in wisconsin and michigan.

it's donald trump called it a scam and questioned the results in virginia, new hampshire and california saying millions of people voted illegally. south florida coughing ] [ coughing ] >> to say that it's not being fair or it's not -- that people are counting illegal votes from my vantage point is an insult to the people that run our elections. >> hillary clinton's lead in the popular vote has climbed to over 2 million! elections officials are still counting ballots from some bay area races. several races in santa clara county are too close to call. so an automatic recount is officially under way. kpix 5's anne makovec is live outside the voter registrar's office to explain the process. anne. >> reporter: starting this morning an automatic manual recall [ sic ] in 10 election contests for santa clara county that are too close to call. this automatic manual recount is part of a pilot program that

are not getting the treatment they need. a husband and wife terrorist duo killed 14 and injured 57 others that day at a county building last december. both later died in the shootout with authorities. some survivors have complained about having workers' compensation claims denied and having trouble obtaining drugs, counseling and other treatment. >> one time i tried to [ indiscernible ] medication, i was told by the pharmacy the approving company saying that [ indiscernible ] [ heavy accent ] >> this coming friday marks one year since the san bernardino massacre. some big news this morning regarding home prices in the bay area. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks joins us. >> reporter: home prices in the bay area cooling off along with the weather. the s&p kay schiller index says in september bay area home prices were down by.4%.

prices rose in the rest of the country that surpassed the prior peak in the summer of 2006 before the bubble burst. overall housing price growth in the country up 5.5% and a year- over-year basis bay area prices still rising ahead of that pace up by 5.7%. coming down from the gains we saw this year. the u.s. economy grew stronger than expected in the 3rd quarter. the commerce department went back looked at the numbers and revised growth higher to 3.2% from 2.9%. it was the strongest quarter since the 2nd quarter of 2014. consumer spending and business investment was a little stronger than originally thought. stock market off to a pretty flat start this morning after we lost a little bit of ground to start off the week on monday. let go to the big board see how we're doing so far. the dow down 20 points now. the nasdaq is still hanging on. it's up about 1 point while the s&p has just slipped into the

high surf advisory in effect now. yesterday we were just talking about a beach hazard statement in effect. now we have the real deal. that's because the swells right now are 8 to 9 feet off ocean beach. these swells will be building to 14 feet breaker at 17 feet. this is definitely going to cause some beach erosion today. never have your back to an angry ocean. if you want to go in the water, it's not advisable. 57 degrees and very strong rip currents, as well. again, coastal areas are clear. we are seeing the development of some dense fog right there in throughout the central valley visibility down to about a quarter mile in throughout sacramento, davis and stockton. but the fog will dissipate and ample sunshine will prevail. high pressure is in command. it's diverting a very vigorous jet stream to the north of the bay area. you see right there? that's a storm a bona fide system there but it's going to bang up into the pacific northwest encompassing victoria british columbia. we are high and dry but pulling down a lot of that cooler air

[ loud screaming ] >> the "fight for $15" protest is still going strong. police issued two dispersal warnings and said they have five minutes to go before they make arrests. about two dozen or so people have been arrested. this has remained peaceful. it hasn't had any issues. but you can see police officers right now reading protestors their rights and arrested them. they closed down the

intersection about 45 minutes now. a couple hundred protestors marched down international boulevard heading inbound and then stood here to express their concerns. this is happening across the country. people are protesting for $15 federal minimum wage. and union rights. in california, there's already a plan in place to move minimum wage to $15 by 2022. people out here this morning are here in solidarity with millions of other minimum wage workers who need a raise. rico johnson living in the bay area and is a single father of 10-year-old twins and says providing a sustainable life for his family is a struggle. >> quite honestly, we deserve more than 15. but that's all we're asking for. you know, like we're not asking to become millionaires. we are not asking to, you know, um, retire on this income. >> this is just the beginning of what will be a full morning of protests. and it goes far beyond the fast food industry. uber drivers want to join in on
