mid-70s. that's a look at your parade forecast. we'll talk more about that but right now let's send it over to jaclyn. >> right now it's quiet. still very early. give it some time but we'll begin by taking a look at your ride along 880 heading through oakland. a nice quiet condition if you are heading to the parade. i would say leave the house now. the earlier the better. 16 minutes northbound 238 to the maze. keep in mind, everyone else is going to be using mass transit, so bart is recommending to avoid using the lake merritt station. that's the small station. use 12th or 19th. we'll have more tips for you coming up. in san francisco, police are trying to determine a motive for a deadly shooting at a u.p.s. facility. three victims and the gunman are dead. two other people are wounded. authorities say the shooter was

a u.p.s. employee named jimmy lam. the shooting happened at this u.p.s. complex in potrero hill. kpix 5's betty yu shows us how authorities responded after the gunman started firing during a typical morning meeting. >> reporter: for six hours a sprawling u.p.s. package delivery warehouse was on lockdown. chopper 5 flew over the san francisco s.w.a.t. team making a round of u.p.s. vehicles other armed officers got into a single file line against the building and even more marched across the rooftop as a bearcat cruised by. officers swarmed every corner of the building in potrero hill because the gunman identified as jimmy lam was still inside. when they found him, he was armed with an assault pistol. >> i think it would be a good idea for us just to stay within our group and wait for the police. >> reporter: on the ground, panic spread among some 350 u.p.s. employees as they streamed out of the building. the gunman opened fire just

before 9 a.m. as drivers and managers got together for a morning meeting where there were said to be up to 60 people in attendance. it was pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, about 7 shots, six shots, then five to six more outside. >> reporter: marvin calderon works at u.p.s. and describes the chaos in the moments after. >> i was just started screaming get out, get out, just gunshots, go, go, go. everybody started running. >> reporter: the shooter had filed an excessive overtime grievance a little over a month ago. it means he felt he was being overworked. a spokesman tonight said it's unclear why he targeted three fellow drivers. he started working for u.p.s. in 1999. sfpd says as soon as its team made contact with lam he killed himself. betty yu, kpix 5. >> sfpd's historical photographer posted these photos on facebook showing

officers with rifles drawn bracing for an encounter with the gunman. some are using u.p.s. trucks for cover. court records obtained by the "chronicle" show the shooter jimmy lam has a criminal history. in 2010 he was convicted of driving under the influence. three years later arrested again for dui. >> we have learned more about the employees who died. it includes wayne chan and benson louie both from san francisco. chan was 56. and benson was 50. 46-year-old michael lefiti was from hercules. friends and family call michael lefiti big mike and people who live along his route say that big mike didn't just bring packages, he brought joy. >> around here, mike is not just a u.p.s. guy. he is everyone's friend. >> you would see him in the neighborhood and say hey, ma,

i'm coming to your house later, i got something for you. >> others along his route have left flowers and notes where he took his daily break. michael lefiti leaves behind three children. a stranger who held his hand before he died told us that big mike made clear he loves them. the annual democrats versus republicans baseball game will go on as planned today in washington, dc. louisiana congressman steve scalise remains in critical condition after he was shot while practicing for the charity game with fellow republicans. seth lemon reports from washington. >> if we don't play this baseball game and we go home, then they win. >> reporter: texas republican roger williams is among lawmakers backing the decision to press ahead with today's annual charity baseball game despite witnessing the shooting still rattling capitol hill. republican members of congress were practicing for that game yesterday when a man identified as james hodgkinson of southern illinois opened fire with a

rifle. the 66-year-old gunman was shot and killed by officers. but not before wounding five. house majority whip steve scalise was shot in the hip and is in critical condition. president trump visited scalise in a dc hospital afterwards tweeting in part, representative scalise is in very tough shape. but he is a real fighter. as they try to figure out a motive, federal investigators are reviewing the gunman's online activity. he repeatedly took to facebook to share anti-trump rhetoric. representative who serves the district hodgkinson was from says his office received calls and emails from the shooter in the past. he said in hindsight one raised a red flag. >> it was not as threatening. if you vote this way, we'll remember you. well, that means that if you're a political activist that means you're going to work harder against me next time. that isn't, you don't take that as a physical threat. >> reporter: hodgkinson also wrote several letters to his

the fire commissioner says it will take authorities weeks to search and clear that building. 12 people dead, 80 others hurt. jonathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: the 24-story building quickly became an intern no trapping people inside. [ screaming ] >> reporter: some waved clothing frantically to get attention. >> what floor are you at! >> huh? >> 7. >> 7, yeah? >> reporter: 16-year-old inez and her family escaped from the 13th floor. >> from the windows showing that people were still at home. people screaming, banging on the windows. >> reporter: witnesses watched as desperate parents tried to save their children. >> people dropped -- >> thrown out of the balcony. people throwing themselves out so they don't get burned. >> reporter: how high up was this? >> this is quite high up.

>> past 8th floor. people jumping and throwing their kids. they just wanted somebody did if you can't save me, please save my children. >> reporter: the fire started in an apartment on the fourth floor around 1 a.m. one resident described smelling gas. the building had just undergone a multi-million dollar renovation last year including new exterior cladding but now authorities expect that may have worked like a chimney spreading the fire quickly up the outside of the building. >> jonathan vigliotti reporting. some residents say they had been complaining about that building for years including concerns about blocked exits and other fire hazards. this morning it is still unclear if a sprinkler system was ever installed. a new auxiliary spillway is ready to go at the folsom dam and new rules are in place to prevent catastrophic flooding. some water districts have criticized the dam operators in the past for releasing too much during the winter and leaving too little for the late summer. the rules haven't been changed in three decades.

the update allows officials to release more water before big storms hit since forecasts are more accurate enable them to retain 10% more water in the reservoir during the winter. >> certainly a lot of water flowing through that and all our reservoirs right now. >> that's a good thing. that's a very good thing. and another good thing is that we have a parade today. >> wahoo! >> we have our running shoes on because we're going to be out there later. >> not yet. day. not as cool as 24 hours ago. san francisco is at 54. the winds are light inland. but next to the seashore in the bay we have a westerly at 17 in san francisco, 13 sfo. under 10 in san ramon. 13 antioch now. 15 fairfield. these winds will be a bit breezy. it's been a breezy spring, hasn't it? they will be west-northwest later today 10 to 20 miles per hour. weather watcher time. we are checking in with linda in fairfield, good morning to robert sullivan in redwood city. and dave in napa. everybody is reporting clear skies and in the 50s. satellite and radar confirms those reports. we do, however, have a few clouds stacked up offshore. these clouds are all associated with an area of low pressure bringing rain showers to the pacific northwest. so a few clouds from time to time today. about your it will be warmer away -- but it will be warmer away from the bay. heat watch goes into effect on friday afternoon through sunday as we top off at 100 and even

hotter than that inland over the weekend. so that low is spilling some precipitation into the pacific northwest. we have this huge dome of high pressure that continues to build into the bay area and southern california. beaches remain cool in the 60s. high 60s and mid-70s common across the bay today. 80s around the peninsula. a few 70s like mountain view at 78 degrees back through la honda into pescadero. otherwise mid-80s in san jose up from the average high of 79 degrees. should be in the high 70s in santa rosa but instead 88. high 80s low 90s to the east. and again, we do have that hotter weather for the weekend. we are talking triple digits, hazy skies as our air quality goes down over the weekend. only gradual cooling on monday through wednesday. but let's get to it. it is the parade of champions. it steps off at 10 a.m. in oakland. mostly sunny skies at 71 going up to an afternoon high of 76 during the rally which takes place immediately after the parade. and if that's not enough also
