[ screaming ] owd protestors cheered as the confederate statue was pulled down in front of the durham county courthouse in north carolina yesterday. the statue bent out of shape when it hit the ground with protestors of course kicking and spitting on the civil war monument as you can see further damaging it. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. the man who allegedly rammed his car into a crowd in charlottesville is according to friends someone who admires adolf hitler. he appeared in court yesterday officially charged with injuring 19 and killing one woman. we're learning more about that victim heather heyer as well. >> her family says she died fighting for her beliefs and campaigning against hate. neda iranpour joins us now to tell us about how people across the nation are really rallying

for the family. >> reporter: there's a growing show of support now for the family overheat tore heyer. more than 8 -- of heather heyer, more than 8,000 people have donated to the family of the 32-year-old who was killed in the attack in charlottesville. virginia. she had been out protesting against the unite the right rally where white nationalists supremacists and neonazis marched against that plans removal of the -- planned removal of the confederate statue. her mother said she died doing what she felt was right. >> i'm extremely proud of my daughter. i'm extremely proud that she stood for what legalled in. -- she believed in. >> reporter: tomorrow people are being asked to wear purple for her service. heyer will be buried tomorrow morning. heyer's gofundme account was set up by a friend and already raised more than $225,000 for her family. also former california governor arnold schwarzenegger donated $100,000 to help a los angeles based group's effort to fight

deportation turns 5 today. kpix 5's sandra osborne is live in san jose this morning. on more on this daca agreement. >> reporter: hey there good morning to you both. now here is the thing. while the program does have a lot of support, many are fearing that we could be getting close to the end of d aca which gives protection to undocumented immigrant children from deportation. now deferred action for childhood arrivals started back in the obama administration in 2012. giving temporary protection to these children. but now it's facing some tough times. as attorneys general from ten states including texas are putting pressure on president trump to end the program. which during his campaign, he indicated he might. now he says the decision is difficult. senators from all over the u.s. are writing to the trump administration, urging he looks at the program with heart. u.s. senator kamala harris from california shared a letter to the president which says quote --

states. today, uc berkeley's new chancellor breaks down her plans for the university. no longer at the helm. following several scandals. kpix 5's jessica flores is live at uc berkeley with the details on this change of the guard. -- changing of the guard. jessica? >> reporter: good morning. yeah the new chancellor will lay out her plans and priorities today at an event at 11:00 a.m. also introduce her new cabinet. carol christ comes to the university as the first woman chancellor of uc berkeley. and at 73, she will also be the oldest chancellor in the university's history. and brings extensive experience to the job. she previously was a president of smith college and vice chancellor at berkeley in the mid 1990s. the outgoing chancellor was forced to step down amid budget problems and a criticism over how he handled sexual harassment claims at the university. christ is taking over just as uc berkeley has welcome center stage for protests against conservative commentators.

munimi hendricks was on probation when he shot the owner last week during a botched robbery. the victim hugh charlie lie was killed while trying to protect his wife from hendricks. charlie lie was just 57 years old. hendricks is being held without bail at the santa clara county main jail. the violence at a white nationalist rally in charlottesville. virginia is prompting protests across the country. in north carolina, a group of protestors pulled down a confederate statue outside the durham county courthouse yesterday. it was a different scene in ohio are r the suspect is from -- where the suspect is from. yesterday dozens gathered for a peaceful march. >> the suspect is 20-year-old james fielding jr. and police say he -- fields jr. and police say he rammed his car into a crowd of antiprotestors. he appeared in court yesterday and was charged with murder. the judge denied him bail. one woman died and 19 others were hurt in the attack. victim is 32-year-old heather heyer. she was protesting the white

extremists. she died fighting for her beliefs her mother says. police are preparing for many protests here in the bay area. >> we now know a right wing group is planning a rally in san fr cio.nesc da iranpindetails. hey. >> reporter: hey guys. the protests and counterprotests of course nothing new in the bay area, people practice their freedom of speech. after the e th few peaceful rallies here. it has police preparing with proper staffing. >> respond in kindness. >> reporter: so we've seen violent clashes on bay area streets more than once this year. you are looking at video that happened in berkeley back in april. some of the same people will be coming to the field in san ano aty august 26th. a spokesperson for the area confirms they issued a permit to a group called patriot prayer. they claim to be a peaceful organization. and in berkeley, another right wing demonstration planned for the next day. a group called no marxism in america will demonstrate at

lee the nation's most prominent general and asked him to leave the union troops in the civil war. now lee was torn because he was no more a rebel than lincoln at that point. but he basically said look i'm from virginia. i can't do it. he got on the horse and rode down to richmond. virginia and immediately the union army took over the house and started bearing troops -- burying troops around the house and underneath the house so lee could never come back to the house. that's whattageton cemetery is -- arlington cemetery is today. >> a lot of people criticizing the president that it took the president two days and then a second news conference to condemn while supremacists -- white supremacist groups. >> reporter: you know, not -- there's millions of people kenny who voted for president trump. who are neither bigoted or racist but the biggest and the race -- bigoses and racists in the -- bigots and racists in the country cheered president trump for what he did here. when you have that kind of base clearly he didn't want to anger them. this is the kind of thing where at first if you mistake something and you say oh there's violence on all sides.
