now at 11:00, breaking news and alameda county, officers opened fire after a high-speed chase spanning two cities. we look at the retail robbery that started it all. >> there was a child walking a dog, the child would be dead. a man and his dog were attacked by two pit bulls. he describes his desperate struggle after the owner took off. an outpouring of emotion as a lakers returned to the court to pay tribute to kobe bryant. >> we are grieving and heartbroken. when we go through things like this, the best thing you can do was lean on the shoulders of your family. >> a first confirmed case of

coronavirus in the bay area. health officials are retracing steps. we are streaming, breaking news in contra costa. a shooting at a basketball game, happening at 9:00 at deer valley high school. it is not clear where the shooting happened. there is evidence markers outside the building. police were seen speaking to people in the parking lot. police said one person was shot, we have no word on their condition. we are following breaking news in union city, where police fired at a pair of suspects during a high-speed chase. we go to betty yu with information on the shooting.>> reporter: at this hour, union city police have parts of the streets blocked off for this

investigation. this is where the police pursuit ended. they tell us, it began in fremont. it all started just after 6:30 this evening. police tell us they responded to a reported robbery at sophora at the pacific commons shopping area. when the officers arrived, they saw a car leaving the scene. >> the officers attempted to pull them over, initiating a pursuit. it went through fremont into union city. it ended in a cul-de-sac.>> reporter: police dispatch revealed that the car was going faster than 85 miles per hour, and the police vehicle reached nearly 100 miles per hour trying to catch up with this getaway car. the pursuit ended here in this residential neighborhood. police tell us that two people were injured in the shooting.

legend.>> reporter: it has been an emotional week. this is the sixth night in a row that the fans have gathered in front of this staples center, dropping out memorabilia and chanting kobe bryant's name. he is synonymous with basketball, and has been for 20 years. his name is synonymous with los angeles. tonight, when the lakers returned, they made sure there was a tribute fit for a legend. >> i will go straight from the heart. >> reporter: emotions were running high the staples center on friday night as the los angeles lakers a tribute to kobe bryant, and the eight others killed in a helicopter crash on sunday.

chase and street, when he said two pit bulls jumped out of an open window of a white suv. >> they went right for the dog. >> reporter: garcia desperately tried to kick the dogs off of leo, but did not have any success until a neighbor came to his aid. >> i could not defend him. i was helpless.>> reporter: garcia rushed leo to the emergency room. that is when gabby garcia first saw what happened to her dog. >> it was in was like he had a gunshot wound. the bite was so profound. >> reporter: leo was a bit on that chest and neck, and required surgery. garcia had scratches and bruises from the fall. the family is thankful that nobody else was hurt. >> we have children living here. if it was a child walking a dog in the same thing happened, the child would've died. >> reporter: the garcias want to make sure this does not

resident of our county is confirmed to have the coronavirus. >> reporter: here's what we know about the patient, he is an adult male. is city of residence has not been released. the patient landed in the airport on january 24. he went directly home and has been self isolating ever since. he has left home only twice, both times to receive medical care. the name of the medical facility is not being released. >> since we are large county, and residents travel for business and personal reasons, we are not surprised to be announcing the first case in the bay area. >> reporter: the santa clara public health department says all information about specific airlines, involved airports, and possible travel companions will be investigated at the federal level by the centers for disease control. while there are no specific advisories, travelers are just learning the news.
