carjackers. this morning, san francisco police and just now confirming their investigation of two other at times overnight. a wrong way crash on a major santa clara freeway. six people are in the hospital. and a woman attacked right in the middle of an alameda county workout class. the old gym members who jumped into action. good morning, and everyone. it is thursday, february 20th. i'm gianna franco. >> and i'm anne makovec. it is 6:00. time to get a check of weather with mary lee. good thursday morning to you. we are starting off the day with chilly temperatures once again. you can see some spots dipping down into the 30s. santa rosa, grab that coat as you head out the door. concord, your coming in at 44. san francisco, 50. san jose, 42. morning to you. as we go through our day, we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds. and warmer compared to

yesterday afternoon. so above-average temperatures. 64, san francisco. 70 in san jose later today. 67 for concord. tracking our next rain system, we will talk about that in my full forecast coming up. but now let's check in with gianna with a bridge check. and that's get you updated on the bay bridge. we are dealing with an accident that was blocking lanes. right before the toll plaza. everything is off to the side there at the east parking lot. and we are seeing a backup there. metering lights are on. it is a slow-and-go rider. not to the may see. that is good news there. your approaches are still clear. eastshore freeway, westbound 580, as well as 880, no delays there. richmond/san rafael bridge, starting to led up this morning. you can see traffic building right you approach the toll plaza. police in san francisco are investigating a rush of attempted carjacking >> an uber driver says he was able to fight the suspects off, even with a gun pointed at his's face. kpix 5's jackie ward joins us live from san francisco with

the very latest. jackie? >> reporter: michelle, police have actually just confirmed to us that they are in fact investigating a string of three attempted carjacking's that happened in the city overnight. this what happened at ninth and harrison. you can see the police are still here. they are trying to collect surveillance video that may help them try to find more evidence. this happened just a few hours ago around 3:00. over driver mex says he was waiting at a light to turn from here soon to 91 three people sadly charged his car. they were all aggressively trying to get in. one actually did get in the backseat. another one was trying to get into the driver's seat and was pointed a gun at the driver's face. >> i kept blocking the barrel and not letting him. he kept trying to open my door. he finally opened it, tried to yet coming out. i kept fighting him the whole time. >> reporter: the driver says he was only forced partially out of the car. so he maneuvered himself back inside, started to make the turn. then realized someone was still in his car. he told them to get out and the suspect ran off.

at one point in all this, the driver says they hit him, too. but he says he is fine. we spoke to police. all three incidents have suspects that were armed with a gun, all three incidents are determined to be similar. they are now trying to figure out if these are all potentially related. we will wait for another update later on this morning. live in san francisco, jackie ward,, kpix 5. a string of crashes in the bay area. first in san jose. the chp is investigating a deadly crash. it happened near the jackson road off-ramp at about 2:00 am. authorities say a car hit a light pole. several signs and an exit sign. one person was pulled from the vehicle and was then pronounced dead on the scene. the cause of that crash is unknown. all lanes are back open after a wrong-way crash on northbound highway 17. it happened a little after midnight. the accident involving a jeep, a motorcycle, and a sedan. that crash said six people to the hospital.

a couple cars had coming through. a motorcycle came through and went down. and a motorcycle slid there. the motorcyclist he came. 25, 30 feet away from me. he had a badly damaged leg, which i heard a tourniquet on. >> authorities say two people are critically injured. no information at this point on how the others are doing. developing this morning, a san diego hospital is no longer on lockdown following an hours- long standoff. it will started last night one of the bank robbery in riverside county happened. police chased the suspect's as you see to san diego where the armed man parked at a children's hospital and refused to get out. officials say he turned the gun on himself. no word yet if he survived. back here in the bay area, the suspect accused of murdering a woman at an airbnb rental has turned himself in. he is 25-year-old ryoichi fuseya he showed up at the office to surrender yesterday with his attorney.

the victim's body was found inside a cottage. investigators are waiting to contact her family before releasing her identity. when the neighbor who has lived in the area for 45 years said she was just walking her dogs by the house before the body was discovered. >> just wondering you know, how could it happen that quick because it is about 15 minutes just to go around the block. next thing i know, the sheriff's are here. >> police have not said yet whether ryoichi fuseya had a relationship with a woman. >> the search continues for missing couple in marin county. we are now hearing from a woman who was the first person to discover they had vanished. she is the property manager of the rental where the couple was staying in inverness. 77-year-old carol kiparsky and her 72-year-old husband, ian irwin, were last seen there on friday. search and rescue crews have been scouring the terrain and water nearby. the property manager went to

their rental on saturday and that is when she noticed something was not right. >> something was off because it didn't look like they had packed it all. it looked like there was -- and there was still mustard on part of it. put back down on the plate. >> it were like they were in the cottage and then all of a sudden, they got beamed into outer space. it is really weird. >> when county sheriffs tweeting out these pictures last night. you can see crews searching the waters nearby. at one point using the help of a canine. it is not clear if crews will be searching today. but will be out over the weekend. a judge just ordered a competency evaluation for them and acquitted in the killing of kate steinle along san francisco's embarcadero. record evaluation concluded jose inez garcia-zarate needs a further evaluation. it could result in rcu's

medication that could allow him to stand trial. it is the latest delay the case that sparked a national debate over sanctuary cities. garcia-zarate faces federal charges of being an undocumented immigrant. happening today, the b.a.r.t. a stabbing trial of nia wilson continues today. yesterday, we learned more about the suspect's interactions with his own family. john lee cowell's aunt testified less you state that cowell attacked his own father with a shovel because he thought his dad was an alien who had taken over his body. she said cowell lost his temper when she refused to run errands for him. cal has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the double standing of nia wilson and her sister. a rising rap star killed in a home invasion. pop smoke was shot in a multi- million-dollar home. the lapd says several masked men entered the home where jackson was staying early

yesterday morning. investigators want to know if photos taken hours before the shooting are part of the motive. they showed the rapper with stacks of cash, bands of the 21- year-old start our shock. >> it is unfortunate, men. he was doing good. he was doing that. he really had something going for himself. >> me with my boyfriend, i watched his career grow. it is tragic to watch him die in violence. >> the home belongs to a real housewives of beverly hills star . a man is in jill accused of a person sexual assault inside a busy alameda county jail. police say this man, jonathan anderson, walked into a 24 hour fitness on masao padre parkway. he entered a workout class and then pushed a woman to the ground and forcefully held her down. investigators say anderson was able to pull her clothing down before another jim member pushed him off of her. gym employees held onto

anderson until officers arrived. >> that is pretty startling. usually this area, if you do see some people who are transient homeless, it is not usually a problem. >> reporter: have you ever felt unsafe here? >> now. it is pretty safe. fremont is pretty safe. >> a spokesperson for 24 hour fitness released a statement saying, quote, we are grateful for the brave club and team members were able to intervene and detain the individual. this morning, san bernardino residents are calling their mayor of to step down. mayor john bella villa is accused of sexually harassing two former city workers. and threatening their jobs. the city has since launched an investigation into the claims. >> the city attorney, another high-ranking city officials have been putting him on notice for his behavior for at least two years. >> do you think he will resign?

welcome back. it is 6:13. chp is heading out to the scene of an accident. eastbound 380. all right at el camino riel. the number three lane is blocked with slow-and-go. just about 6:14 now. greasy video of a high-voltage rescue. a paraglider dangling from power lines for almost 3 hours. [ cheers and applause ] that is moment when the crowd let out a huge sigh of relief. the paraglider was returning. somehow, his parachute got tangled up in some power lines, leaving him suspended. as the sun went down, pg&e had to the energized alliance, which thousands of people in the dark. fire crews told the paraglider to stay still as they tried to reach him. >> that is difficulty with making sure that the allies

were the energized to make sure that firefighters were safe. >> and cameras were rolling for the triumphant moment. a firefighter finally got him down, lowering him to the ground in a bucket. fire crews say he is exhausted but stable. >> glad he is okay. a bay area lawmaker has introduced a bill in hopes of streamlining the current mishmash of local regulations for marijuana retailers. the bill by a cement building would direct the state's borough of cannabis control to create a model ordinance that could serve as a guide for cities and counties. this morning, we have found that muni already one of the country's most expensive transit systems could see another fare hike. san francisco transit officials are considering raising muni affairs by a quarter next year. that would bring it up to 3 bucks and $.25. the report says the sfmta needs those funds to help end a bus and train operators shortage. not everyone is on board. the supervisor dean preston took the chronicle they should be getting more people to

transit. fare increases do the exact opposite. let's check the roads and see how it is looking on this thursday morning. >> it is a little bit busy out there. we are seeing more cars in some of the hotspots as well as you work your way out of the south bay. with those any changes, you want to keep in mind, there are some changes happening this weekend also. as you head out the door, you are going to see some changes with muni also. taking a look at the roadways, you can see traffic is slow-and- go. near the altamont pass, and as you work your way along 880 as well. i like that nimitz freeway, a lot of brake lights. we do have a crash on 380. we will get a closer look at that in just a second. it is causing some brake lights in that area. start metro service will be affected. one trip right max. also did richmond express will have some changes for their last ones of the day. reports for 23 monterey. so that starts this weekend on

saturday and again, through the week as well. definitely. plan for that. right at el camino riel, it is like we are not seeing as many brake lights there. they are sensors are showing more green. my guess is they probably cleared this over to the shoulder. it was causing a bit of a back up. so it would have affected your drive heading towards sfo. the hopefully they have cleared that out of lanes. taking a look at traffic along the south bay here, northbound 101, they had reports of an accident. it is off to the right shoulder. looks like it is not causing any major snacks this morning. busy anyway northbound 101 coming away from that 280/680 connector. you want to use 280 instead. that is smooth sailing all the way to the peninsula. one thing i love about mornings is you get your afternoon free. >> it is going to be a gorgeous, gianna, with a mix of

welcome back. happening today, students at san jose state will be braving the cold, sleeping under the stars in solidarity with their homeless peers. it is part of the the annual poverty under the stars sleeping. all week long, students have been getting ready, making posters and ribbons. their message, student homelessness is hidden in plain sight. the student homeless alliance says 53,000 students in the cal state system have experienced homelessness in the past year. in original series, "project home", an unusual state of the state address from governor newsom. >> you devoted the entire speech to housing and homelessness. >> the state of california can no longer treat homelessness and housing insecurity as someone else's problem. low on other priorities that are much easier. it is our responsibility. it must be the top of our agenda. >> the governor says the he intends to back that promise with a one billion-dollar

southbound, getting a bit busy through hayward. i'm jackie ward live in the south market neighborhood of san francisco. police now confirmed that they are investigating three attempted carjacking's that happened overnight. one of them happened here and for the last half hour or so, additional police officers have arrived on scene. we can say right now, they seem to be looking at this old called honda civic that has the driver-side window down. it is not smashed else. they have been investigating this area for quite a bit now. they're looking for surveillance video from nearby businesses to try to catch the suspects in action as well. not far from where we are standing, an uber driver from walnut creek says he was waiting at a light to turn from here soon to 91 three people suddenly charged his car. they were all aggressively trying to get in. one actually did get into the backseat. another and was trying to get into the driver's seat. he kept pointing a gun at his face. understandably, the driver says he was still a little shaken up after all this. >> i guess i was a little bit, i guess, bold by not fearing

meantime, one san benito county couple remain at cfs in a solution. the husband was infected in china and then passed the virus onto his wife when he returned home. some smell businesses say their sales are suffering because of the public's coronavirus concerns. mandarin gourmet restaurant in san jose's oak ridge area has seen a 27% drop in self. johnny khamis is sending out the message that now is the time to support chinese-owned businesses. >> businesses that are chinese- owned are being experiencing slowdowns. this is not right. >> in palo alto, esther to be, says patients have been canceling their appointments at their first medical acupuncture clinic. she is among the couple hundred people who evacuated wuhan, china, when the coronavirus outbreak began. she was quarantined for weeks. she says she was never

infected. continuing coverage of the coronavirus outbreak, just head to our website, kpix.com. this morning, the search continues for missing firefighter in porterville . yesterday, do crews started digging through the rubble of the building, looking for the 25-year-old. another firefighter was confirmed killed. two teenagers are under arrest, charged with arson. in new details this morning after months of devastating bushfires, australia is now in launching a royal commission investigation. prime minister scott morrison said the inquiry will help australia better protect itself from longer and hotter summers. the investigation will focus on improving three areas, disaster management, preparedness, and the government's response. it is expected to be completed in august. a federal judge is blasting pg&e for falling behind on its tree trimming plan meant to prevent wildfires. the judge slammed pg&e, saying six gives are putting creek before safety.

>> jason brooks, thank you. without warning, uber closed its customer support office in downtown los angeles. according to "the l.a. times", employees found out the day it happened. it affected about 80 workers. some were offered sandwich packages. we reached out to uber and received his response that's reads in part, we closed it in order to focus on resources in our largest customer support centers. uber has made a series of? since it went public last year a long legal ballot between taxi drivers and the city of san francisco could be coming to a close. >> it is in the hands of a judge and a tentative ruling could come as soon as today. san francisco's taxi medallions were envisioned as a revenue maker. almost simultaneously came the rise of ride hailing apps uber and lyft. >> now it is worthless. >> in 2018, kpix 5 first

traffic this morning. a trouble spot along 880. motorcycle accident on the northbound side of 880 near 66. we got a live shot check, just north of where that crash is. tell us heading northbound. we will see a lot more traffic travel through this area. we are seeing later than usual conditions. that is because we are seeing most of those brake lights, before where that accident is. this is where our cameras north of here. that is where the crashes. you can see the line of yellow and red behind it even though the activity is over to the right shoulder, probably some slow-and-go conditions due to spectators slowing. to crews at emergency crews heading out to the scene as well. a lot better as you head past the coliseum. just before that, has up. there's the crash over to the right shoulder. the commute, out of hayward. southbound 880, definitely busy as you work your way through there. tonight minutes from his experience over towards 237. definitely planned for for that. brake lights now in the fremont area as well. business as usual for the most part as you head through there.

related. you can see the window is smashed out. they have been talking to the driver of this car. this happened with a suspect that had again. police are looking at surveillance video from nearby businesses to try to catch a the suspects in action. around 3:00 this morning, an uber driver driving a different car was waiting at a light to turn from harrison when three people sadly charged in the car. they were all aggressively trying to get in. when actually did get in the backseat. another one was trying to get into the driver's seat. he kept pointing a gun at the driver's face. the driver said, he was only forced partially out of the car so he got himself back all the way in started to make the turn. that's when he realized someone was still against the car. he told them to get out. the suspects ran off. they also hit the driver, too, but the driver was check out by paramedics on the scene and is okay. however, it was a really scary scene. he is still shaken up. police are not able to tell us if these carjackings are related and the suspects at this point, they believe, are
