husband ian irwin were found alive. only a half-mile from their rental cabin. we spoke to the couple's two sons about how they managed to survive.>> reporter: the couple is spending the night at marin general hospital. recovering from hypothermia as well as scratches. there are said to be hungry and grateful. this is the best possible ending. we spoke to their sons tonight about their parents remarkable ordeal. they went out to look at the sunset on valentine's day. it got dark. they took a wrong turn. they found themselves in trouble. and they kept going.>> reporter: they were moving trying to get to a road. trying to move to water. taking water leads to civilization.>> reporter: they were close to a road but on the other side of a >> reporter:>> reporter: rescuers pulled the couple out this morning by helicopter. my dad is very scratched up.

survived and made it back with their family we had already thought the verse. we found them. so i'm thinking initially we have bodies in this is not this is better than nothing. but then i read it again and is that we found them and they are alive. and i'm like and i screamed. my wife came running in. i was in the closet. i said they found them and they are alive. thank you to everyone. everyone who was thinking about them. who was searching for them. thank you. erwial they they are spending the night at the hospital and could be released as soon as tomorrow. this just in a deadly crash in san jose.

a man and woman were walking on a crosswalk near san carlo street and south baskin avenue when they were hit by a car. there were taken to a hospital where the woman died. the man suffered life- threatening injuries. the driver of the car did stop and is cooperating with police. police say drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the crash. campaign 20/20 coverage. bernie sanders is projected to win the nevada caucuses establishing the vermont senator is the clear frontrunner for the democratic nomination for president. right now sanders has a lead over former vice president joe biden. with pete buttigieg and elizabeth warren trailing behind. nadia is in las vegas tonight.>> reporter: it was george hw bush who coined the term the big mole. momentum that a candidate needs through the primary season to propel that person to the nomination. that momentum is exactly what bernie sanders has. standing in front of a crowd of cheering supporters a joei is

suspected of cost starting the fire. he was arrested after he came back to the home and assaulted one of the victims. a woman who police say he had previously dated. police in fairfield arrested this meant for attempted murder. officers say jacob travis broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment. started a fight with someone inside and stabbed them multiple times. the victim was taken to the hospital with wounds. in the back of his head neck and back. police say he is expected to survive. hillsboro police are investigating a string of home burglaries. two homes were burglarized on mt. wood lane between seven and 10:30 pm yesterday. the third home was broken into sometime between friday and this afternoon on tournament drive. in all of the cases the residence were not home. police say the suspects broke in by shattering a sliding glass door. or first floor window. police believe all three are connected. it has been one year since
