total two at least five. there are now 30 cases in california and the third u.s. case of unknown origin was just confirmed in oregon. kpix 5's len ramirez tells us the new numbers are prompting an urgent message from health officials . it is time to prepare for the possibility of widespread community transmission. >> what we know now is that the virus is here, present at some level. we still don't know to what degree. an important priority there for us is to conduct public health surveillance to determine the extent of what is happening. >> reporter: a little phone bank has been set up with county health workers calling individuals to ask how they are feeling and what their temperature is. >> we are in the cold and flu season and we don't want to overwhelm the medical system with worry but at the same time, especially if there are symptoms that become worse or fever is involved, definitely call your physician and

them know about your concerns. will make santa clara county now has the ability to run the coronavirus test so the health department has the ability to quickly evaluate what is happening in the community. >> we believe the increased testing capacity is going to have a significant impact on our ability to quickly identify and contain those individuals with the disease. >> reporter: health officials say there are practical measures that can be done in the community to limit the spread of coronavirus. schools should plead for absenteeism and increased surface cleansing and businesses should consider replacing in person meetings with teleconferencing. in san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. >> also in santa clara county, to palo alto students will be out of class until further notice. the district had some hope

firefighters will spend the night watching for hotspots after our first big grass fire of the year. >> this one big enough to cause concern in one peninsula neighborhood. the fire started shortly after 10:00 this morning, burning to that and underbrush at san bruno mountain state park. those flames were shooting into the air, crews were able to prevent the flames from breaching any homes. officials say the lack of rain this month certainly played a role. >> it is very unusual to have dry weather like this in february and i attribute it to fire activity. >> it is a good reminder in february to have a plan for how you are going to get out. >> crews were able to limit that fire to six acres. that is not what we want to see in the middle of winter but it is the way it has been. we haven't had any rain in sanford cisco sent january 28th. we are going on a month but it
