>> with five days to go until the governors recall election, what new polls reveal about the state of the race this morning. good morning it is thursday, september 9. >> another round of extreme heat inland prompting another flex alert today. a new concern now. >> looking live at the north and east bay. a fire weather watch has been issued starting at 5:00 today. parts of the bay area could see the storms and maybe even dry lightning. let's get to our meteorologist. it feels like a never ending fire season. >> everything is just so dry. we have an exceptional drought across most of the bay area. and now we will bring in some subtropical moisture, instability and the chance for an isolated thunderstorms. want to get to our temperatures first. it will be a hot day inland. not as hot as yesterday. we have triple digit the yesterday and mid-80s to the 90s today. temperatures in the upper bay

in the upper 70s. we have a fire weather watch that is in effect from 5:00 p.m. until friday at 11:00 a.m. for the north bay mountains and valleys due to the potential for dry lightning. we will talk about this and show you future cast coming up. despite the fire weather watch, cal fire is lifting the burning bin in santa cruz and san mateo county. >> new bern payments are suspended. farther north and shasta county the dixie fire is prompting new evacuations near highway 44. his new video just into our newsroom overnight. shows the fire behind the area and behind the trees. we are live from the news desk. >> the fire is now burning quote faster than we can keep pace with. >> reporter: keep in mind the fire has been burning for almost 2 months. this is just a picture of how these things get out of control.

especially with the weather we are having. suddenly it is rearing up on the eastern side, causing new evacuations last night. the new evacuations in the area of old station, it is on the eastern edge of the fire. the dixie fire has been burning near highway 44 through the national forest. it has burned almost 1 million acres at this point. that is about eight times the size of san jose. it is 59% contained. also checking in on the caldor fire burning in the tahoe area, crews are working to clear off the surrounding highways after the flames surrounded parts of highway 54 a couple of weeks. significant damage left behind. broken barriers, fallen trees, damaged pavement. caltrans said the highways wrecked condition at this point is a safety threat. no estimated time frame of when they will make sure it is cleared for travel again. firefighters are halfway there when it comes to containment of

that fire. 50%. between those two huge fires in northern california, almost 2000 buildings have burned. that will be another process. the cleanup and trying to recuperate whatever people can from all of that. i know you have an eye on the traffic. and troubles and east bay. >> we have a traffic alert along 880 and it is causing brake lights. you can see all the red popping up and speeds at 7 miles per hour. this is north 880 near 23rd avenue, lanes are blocked. a second crash. adding to an already extra busy ride. it involves a motorcycle and another vehicle. injuries reported. with the two left lanes blocked, the right lanes are open for traffic. use 580. 580 on the map is moving with no delays or issues. that is a better choice right now to avoid the delays on 880.

vaccine. ideally from l.a. unified. we will provide it. >> board members say legal exemptions will still be available. in the bay area a tragic crash outside a middle school in contra costa county. the crossing guard died after a car hit him and a child yesterday. the victims mother tells us her son died a hero, saving a young girl's life outside stanley middle school and lafayette. the accident happened right at school let out. the crossing guard reportedly walked in front of a young girl to keep her from getting hit by an suv and that car knocked him over and dragging him underneath . his mother tells us the 45- year-old had just started as a crossing guard yesterday. >> i knew this day would come because i see everybody speeding. >> it is really upsetting. everybody in this area, it is

not like it is a big town. everybody knows that school is here and you need to be careful. >> the younger was taken to the hospital but only suffered minor injuries. to the california recall election. five days ago. this morning to new polls paint a promising outcome for governor newsom. they were taken before his big political boost from the white house. >> they think if they can win in california they can do this anywhere. we will show them they would not get this done not here, never. >> larry elder wants to walk us on the same covid cliff as texas and florida and tennessee and alabama and georgia. >> a couple of the governor's leading opponents brought their campaigns to the bay area yesterday. kevin faulkner met with victim rights advocates in san francisco and the other took his bus tour to treasure island. the latest poll by suffolk university found 58% of those surveyed plan to vote, no on the recall. all 41% said they would vote yes. another poll found 56% of people intended to vote, no. 44% plan to vote yes. kpix5 is planning special coverage of the recall

we are tracking in the pacific is off the coast. there is an outside chance of an early afternoon shower or thunderstorm. as we go through this evening, it picks up. more moisture, higher instability to work with, and the better chance of an isolated thunderstorm. as we head through this evening. as we look to tomorrow at this time, the threat is over. the threat moves off to the east. by friday morning. let's time it out. he saw the showers on doppler, just off the coast over monterey. we will see if that holds together. we could see a spotty sprinkle this morning. but just some passing clouds as we head through the day today. there we go with the potential for an isolated thunderstorm or a few showers for tonight. stopping the clock at 10:00 p.m. , as we head through the overnight hours, a chance of a few showers or thunderstorms. 6:00 a.m., the potential and instability as well to the east.

for the tahoe area, sierra is under a fire weather watch. the greater potential for isolated thunderstorms and dry lightning up over the sierra. that is the last thing they need . tracking and monitoring that for you. daytime highs, we are looking at temperatures inland about 5- 10 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. still heating up and looking at the south bay daytime highs in the mid-80s. for the inland east bay you are in the low 90s this afternoon for concord. around the bay, upper 60s. mid-70s in oakland. seven-day forecast a little cooler. and through the weekend and for the inland east bay after the chance of an isolated thunderstorm and dry lightning possible today and for the north bay as well looking at temperatures cooler on friday.

let's have a look at traffic. i will start with good news i got word from chp they just opened all lanes northbound 880 near 23rd avenue. that is where a motorcycle crash was blocking two left lanes. everything is cleared. looking at the mapping system we have a big backup in the area. two other crashes were reported near high street and one north of their. causing an extra busy ride. 580, is all in the green. that is a much better choice right now if you're getting ready to head out the door and commute to oakland. things look better past this as you approach the macarthur maze but you will have to do with brake lights. the metering lights have been turned on at the bay bridge and traffic is stacking up a bit as you head near the toll plaza area. we start to see some like us conditions off the shore freeway as well as well as westbound 580. the ride on 580 is busy.

crews battling the dixie fire have spent an exhausting eight weeks on the fire lines and now it is flaring up again. >> earlier this week they got a welcome distraction. the group brought some much- needed therapy dogs. firefighters say after working long shifts away from family, it is a good opportunity to step back and take some time for themselves. >> i have never been to a fire camp that had dogs come before. that was a real treat. i came and took off running. >> the connection the dog has with someone in need is incredible. >> look at the puppies. it is not just firefighters. they are helping support for the evacuees. >> something when they put their car out into your hand. it hits you right here. >> so much love.

this plan that the president will lay out today, will get us closer to that. taking a live look at the white house right now. it looks like the administration is very busy with a couple of big issues. they are also talking about potentially suing texas over the abortion law in that state just enacted and the supreme court with the rubber stamp on. that is something that could happen as soon as today. when it comes to a federal lawsuit. you probably heard about texas restrictions that would limit abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy, when a lot of women don't know they are pregnant. the administration has been facing pressure from democrats and abortion rights group to take action after this i went down. among the moves the attorney general says the administration is discussing, potentially attempting to strip federal funding. also trying to

so far they managed to reduce their usage by 6%. stafford and palo alto are at or near the 15% goal. santa clara and mountain view only cut 2%. los altos hills using 5% more. if conservation does not improve, water companies could start imposing financial penalties. >> this is not something we want to do. but we may not have a choice based on the very serious drought we are in. >> it is hard not to be disappointed. i know my water bill is more expensive today and it is not because usage has gone up.>> the marine municipal water district is considering whether to charge new penalties for people using excessive amounts of water, when they are supposed to be conserving. the board will vote on the penalty program in a couple weeks. the bay area's hot housing market is showing no signs of slowing down.

especially this evening through the overnight, with enough instability, as we look to the north bay mountains and valleys , we could see some isolated thunderstorms. tracking that very closely. we have some tropical moisture and instability to work with. you can see all of the lightning strikes just off the coast of southern california. about 200-250 miles west of san diego. that shows you all of that instability that we have to work with, as we look to our area. a few showers pushing over monterey and just off the coast. zooming in for the inland east bay could see some spotty sprinkles or a few showers over danville. we are already starting to see some activity. we had the fire weather watch and we have been talking about it all morning all. it is in effect from 5:00 p.m. today until 11:00 a.m.

tomorrow.fodry lightning. it is because of the subtropical moisture off the coast. to the west of southern california. to the afternoon there is an outside chance of an early afternoon shower or thunderstorm . a greater potential for that will be this evening and overnight into the early morning tomorrow. we have moisture and higher instability. a better chance of an isolated thunderstorms. as we head through friday morning, at this time tomorrow, the threat is over. it moves to the east and could bring the potential for dry lightning and thunderstorms over the sierra. not a good thing for them. we could see a few showers holding together through the morning. sprinkles possible. but looking at passing clouds in the afternoon. there we go with a chance for

isolated thunderstorms for the north bay. this is a 10:00 tonight overnight and to the east tomorrow. temperatures are 10 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. for the inland locations. mid-80s to the mid-90s. a little cooler but still hot. a little cooler tomorrow. we are watching the potential for isolated thunderstorms as we head through tonight and overnight. as we take a look at the roadways there is quite a big going on. we have a new crash reported westbound 80 around a bridge and in the center divide. if you are headed through that area, you will see some brake lights. plan for that this morning. east shore freeway getting busy. as you head west toward the bay bridge. the earlier trouble spot north

880 is now cleared and we are starting to see an improvement for the ride along the nimitz freeway. we had a couple of crashes in that area and a new one just into the traffic center. this is north 880 near 66th avenue. it is causing a backup. all the activity is over to the shoulder. a live look at the oakland camera on 880, nimitz freeway. you can see the headlights heading northbound. things are slow because of the crash at 66. speaking of slow, here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are on. it is busy as you work your way out of oakland. sluggish conditions. travel time at 15 minutes to go from the maze over into the city. let's check in the travel times. 52 minutes from antioch to 80.
