that wet weather expected, coming up. let's check with gianna for a look at traffic. we have a traffic alert in effect. i have new information from chp. unfortunately this is now a deadly crash. east bound 80 at el portal through san pablo. two cars are involved, one vehicle overturned and got stuck on its side. another car was involved in the incident as well. we are starting to track brake lights in both directions, dealing with slick surfaces in the area also. be careful as you hit the roadways. expect that closure for sometime as the investigation is underway. if you are headed towards bay bridge, west 80 near fremont street exit, clearing a crash from the left hand side of the road way but traffic is already busy across the upper deck. live to downtown san francisco and oakland, both cities are dealing with spike in homicides. it is prompting plea to end the violence. in a rare display of unity

between the d.a. and police chief in san francisco, number of homicides in 2021 is on pace to surpass last year's total. dozens gathered at a vigil to law enforcement, community leaders, and others say pandemic related stress may be a contributing factor in the homicide up tick but there is no concrete answer as to why. >> we will do whatever we can together in our departments. >> we always are trying to work together to make things better. these families deserve that. that's what we are committed to doing. >> this is the third year san francisco has lit up the dome in honor of murder victims. dock designated national day of remembrance in 2007. oakland is grappling have a violence crisis. that matches total for all of last year. the city reached the milestone after a double homicide early sunday. two brothers were shot and

mandate. oakland unified became the first bay area district to approve mandate for students. it requires kids ages 12 and older to be fully vaccinated with exceptions made for medical or religious reasons. the school board has yet to decide when the mandate will take effect. federal and state health authorities say they are confident they have enough vaccine doses for booster shots and young children. public health officials are confident they can avoid repeat of the slow roll out of covid- 19 vaccines across the country earlier this year. more than 70 million americans remain unvaccinated despite lottery prizes and pleas from healthcare workers. crews have up'd containment on fawn fire, have built a fire line around the blaze in shasta but the wind is still posing danger. some are upset about the response to the fire. they gathered at a meeting over the weekend to question cal fire's air tactics. some say initial air attack

could see wet weather as we head through the day today with an air quality advisory in effect but looking at good air quality. we'll talk more about what you can expect, coming up. a san jose police officer is being praised for quick thinking and bravery. he is shown on camera rushing to rescue a man trapped in a burning car. san jose fire crews recorded this video as they pulled up to the scene. they saw the officer reach into the burning car, pull the man out and drag him to safety. the man was hospitalized. the police officer wasn't hurt. a pedestrian hit and killed by a car on interstate 680 in martinez last night shortly before 8:00. police responded to reports that a pedestrian was in the road way and hit by a white toyota. the person died at the scene. police tell us the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation. developing this morning, new fees are being considered for some national parks in san francisco and marin county. >> the public comment period

wrapped up yesterday. golden gate national recreation area introduced plan to add fees in august. you would need to start paying $3 per hour and up to $10 per day to park. fees would be charged at parking lots at baker, china, stenson, rodeo beaches. lands in, sutro heights, navy memorial, cronkite. it needs this for things like trash collection and janitor services. >> if approved, the fees would be phased in over several years beginning in mid to late 2022. san francisco may close a road in golden gate park to cars permanently. >> city leaders shut down jfk drive early in the pandemic and it was a move to give people a place to get outside and

activists pushing for people to start talking about immigration again. about 100 people marched four hours from santa rosa to hills berg yesterday. they want to put pressure on federal, state, local leaders and work harder to grant legal status to the undocumented. demonstrators walked 12 miles to represent the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the united states. >> we work the hardest jobs here. we maintain the wine industry here. we deserve a path to citizenship and safe and healthy work places. >> sometimes they come in in this county as farm labor and end up working in construction and end up starting their own businesses. they really end up being quite a contribution to the county itself. to the coronavirus, new cases have been gradually dropping. experts say we are not out of the woods yet. over the next months, we could

see the latest surge subside. >> this may be the last major wave of infection. i think by thanksgiving you will seattle this move through the country. the virus isn't going away but prevalence levels will decline to a level that feels more manageable. >> we were seeing seven day average of up to 160,000 cases a day at the peak of the surge. cdc says that is closer to 114,000 new cases per day. dr. scott gottlieb, a former fda commissioner, expects we'll eventually drop to 20,000 a day. world health organization reviving the investigation into the origins of covid-19. it's assembling a new team of 20 scientists, including specialists in lab safety and biosecurity as well as experts on genetics and how animals can transmit viruses to people. this group will have a mandate to hunt for new evidence in china and elsewhere. san francisco politicians will talk of the advantages of a new blood donation center run

off the tracks. police in novato are investigating a crash and car fire that threatened homes on a hillside. firefighters released a photo of the burned out wreckage above lemont avenue. they say saturday the car veered off a driveway on the hill top and the tires got jammed in a culvert sparking the fire. the two inside escaped injury and crews managed to fight the fire before it reached homes. a new weapon, a fleet of high tech helicopters that will fight fires at night. this used to fly in afghanistan for u.s. army but has been retro quitted to drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant at a time. that's ten times what most fire fighting choppers drop. a group of southern california departments banded together to buy the $18 million chopper. fire experts say it is pretty
