is playing on the field. good morning. it is monday, september 27. i am len kiese. >> i am gianna franco. we begin with your monday forecast. some spots can see hazy skies and others can stay rain today. let's go right to mary lee. a lot going on. we have drizzle with wet roadways along the coast and around the bay. even san francisco, you see drops on our live mark hopkins hotel camera showing that wet start to the day in spots. i am tracking a weak cold front, first fall front of the season. here we are at noon, lake county, mendocino catching that wet weather through our afternoon, light scattered showers. here is 5:00 p.m. we are looking, even though we have that air quality advisory in effectmaybe a little bit haze at the surface, good to moderate air quality. that sea breeze kicking in. that means we are looking atda l talkmore about what you can expect through our day and

that wet weather expected, coming up. let's check with gianna for a look at traffic. we have a traffic alert in effect. i have new information from chp. unfortunately this is now a deadly crash. east bound 80 at el portal through san pablo. two cars are involved, one vehicle overturned and got stuck on its side. another car was involved in the incident as well. we are starting to track brake lights in both directions, dealing with slick surfaces in the area also. be careful as you hit the roadways. expect that closure for sometime as the investigation is underway. if you are headed towards bay bridge, west 80 near fremont street exit, clearing a crash from the left hand side of the road way but traffic is already busy across the upper deck. live to downtown san francisco and oakland, both cities are dealing with spike in homicides. it is prompting plea to end the violence. in a rare display of unity

between the d.a. and police chief in san francisco, number of homicides in 2021 is on pace to surpass last year's total. dozens gathered at a vigil to law enforcement, community leaders, and others say pandemic related stress may be a contributing factor in the homicide up tick but there is no concrete answer as to why. >> we will do whatever we can together in our departments. >> we always are trying to work together to make things better. these families deserve that. that's what we are committed to doing. >> this is the third year san francisco has lit up the dome in honor of murder victims. dock designated national day of remembrance in 2007. oakland is grappling have a violence crisis. that matches total for all of last year. the city reached the milestone after a double homicide early sunday. two brothers were shot and

killed in front of their home at the intersection of high street and pompous avenue. >> we have to help each other. we can't separate like oh that's not my problem because it is the flat land. it's up in the hills, not my problem. it is our proble as oak citizen problem and have lp each other >> community members held a vigil to remember lives lost and call for unity. an emotional count down for some, statewide eviction moratorium will expire later this week. local housing advocates are taking action to help renters. justin andrews is live in concord with the details for us this morning. >> reporter: the message, now is not the time to end this eviction moratorium. they say protections are still desperately needed for people suffering from paying rent. housing advocates were in san francisco over the weekend

caravan rallying, driving home the message that the pandemic is not over and our economy hasn't bounced back yet. moratorium was put in place to stop evictions during the height of the pandemic where millions of americans lost their jobs or couldn't work for months. the moratorium was extended multiple times throughout the pandemic. housing advocates are fearful with this september 30 expiration date. >> people aren't ready. people are still suffering under the pandemic. people are still suffering from the money they lost due to unemployment or other crises. >> reporter: at 10:30 today, there are going to be people from governor newsom's office really just helping and urging those who need help to apply for assistance. back to you in the studio. >> justin, thank you. taking a live look at oakland where today the city's school district will hold what is called a virtual community conversation for spanish speaking families. this is about the new vaccine

mandate. oakland unified became the first bay area district to approve mandate for students. it requires kids ages 12 and older to be fully vaccinated with exceptions made for medical or religious reasons. the school board has yet to decide when the mandate will take effect. federal and state health authorities say they are confident they have enough vaccine doses for booster shots and young children. public health officials are confident they can avoid repeat of the slow roll out of covid- 19 vaccines across the country earlier this year. more than 70 million americans remain unvaccinated despite lottery prizes and pleas from healthcare workers. crews have up'd containment on fawn fire, have built a fire line around the blaze in shasta but the wind is still posing danger. some are upset about the response to the fire. they gathered at a meeting over the weekend to question cal fire's air tactics. some say initial air attack

good monday morning. it's a wet start to our day with drizzle along the coast and around the bay. you see the sheen on the golden gate bridge. as we head through our day, i am tracking a cold front that will bring light scattered showers. futurecast hour by hour here we are at noon with showers across lake and mendocino. look as it pushes across north bay as well as along the cot. for ea, we

could see wet weather as we head through the day today with an air quality advisory in effect but looking at good air quality. we'll talk more about what you can expect, coming up. a san jose police officer is being praised for quick thinking and bravery. he is shown on camera rushing to rescue a man trapped in a burning car. san jose fire crews recorded this video as they pulled up to the scene. they saw the officer reach into the burning car, pull the man out and drag him to safety. the man was hospitalized. the police officer wasn't hurt. a pedestrian hit and killed by a car on interstate 680 in martinez last night shortly before 8:00. police responded to reports that a pedestrian was in the road way and hit by a white toyota. the person died at the scene. police tell us the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation. developing this morning, new fees are being considered for some national parks in san francisco and marin county. >> the public comment period

wrapped up yesterday. golden gate national recreation area introduced plan to add fees in august. you would need to start paying $3 per hour and up to $10 per day to park. fees would be charged at parking lots at baker, china, stenson, rodeo beaches. lands in, sutro heights, navy memorial, cronkite. it needs this for things like trash collection and janitor services. >> if approved, the fees would be phased in over several years beginning in mid to late 2022. san francisco may close a road in golden gate park to cars permanently. >> city leaders shut down jfk drive early in the pandemic and it was a move to give people a place to get outside and

exercise and maintain social distance. the area has become popular with walkers, joggers, bicyclists. the city is trying to figure out if the change should become permanent or perhaps revert back to when it was closed only on weekends. the supervisor matt hannie supports a closure on all days. >> there are tons of folks who are walking or biking, children, families roller skating. it's in the middle of a park. it should be used by people. >> during quarantine and covid i have been running on the street every day. so many pedestrians get hit by cars. i feel more safe and comfortable running on this street. >> the city is surveying residents about what they would like to see happen. a final decision is expected next year. 6:15. if you plan on jogging or getting out today, you are going to run into a bit of wet weather. here is mary. excited about this. tracking our first front of the

fall season, that will bring light scattered showers. not all of us will see that, not expecting a lot. but we will take what we can get. we are looking at a wet start this morning with drizzle along the coast and around the bay. it's a cloudy start with foggy conditions as well and even definitely feels a little muggy. our afternoon, scattered showers as we go through our afternoon as a weak cold front pushes across the bay area. the best chance to see that wet weather north of the golden gate, coast, north bay, you have a better chance of seeing scattered showers. through the afternoon, cooler for all of us, below average with the stronger ocean breeze. there we go with the upper level low and trailing cold front that will bring us wet weather. let's time it out for hopefully what you can expect for at least the micro climate. santa rosa, you have a better chance of seeing wet weather today. san francisco, there is a

chance though concord, inland east bay, south bay, san jose, those rain chances are on the low side. slim chances there. hour by hour on futurecast, stopping the clock at noon, you see wet weather across lake and mendocino. through the afternoon, stopping at 5:00 p.m., you see scattered activity for north bay, the coast, for san francisco as well. as we look to 8:00 p.m., isolated showers. that continues by 10:00 p.m. spotty showers are definitely a possibility. then for tuesday morning, starting our day with clouds and then clearing with sunshine for the rest of your tuesday afternoon and temperatures on the rise for the rest of the work week. if you are lucky enough to catch that wet weather, a few hundredths of an inch possible, this is really a weak weather system that we are tracking. we have an air quality advisory in effect. you might see a little bit haze but that's aloft in the upper levels of the atmosphere. at the surface we are looking good with onshore flow and sea

that ended up on its side. we have brake lights in both directions west 80. east bound 80, you have brake lights as well. give yourself a few extra minutes if you are headed along the east shore freeway. it looks like the closure will likely be out there for sometime. they have called tow crews to the scene. if you are ready to take 680 through fremont, we have a crash south 680. we've got the number two lane blocked, second from the left lane towards center divide due to a crash with injuries. traffic is busy as you work through the sunol grade. busy at the bay bridge toll plaza, bumper to bumper traffic. metering lights were turned on about 5:40. we had a crash across the upper deck as you come off the skyway. that added to an extra busy ride for your drive into san francisco. 16 minutes from the maze into

you have brake lights in both directions. west bound 80 and east bound 80. give yourself a few extra minutes if you are taking east shore freeway. west bound towards the bay bridge, metering lights were turned on about 5:40 and we have a pretty significant back as you work over into san francisco. 21 minutes from the maze into the city. we have some breaking news out of of santa clara. crews are on the scene of a house fire. >> police say at least one person has died. flames broke out about two hours ago at a home on tuscany place in cupertino. there is no word on what caused the fire or information on the victim. contra costa investigators were pretty busy over the weekend. first, a three vehicle crash and then a fire at the church. here is a re on the side of faith worship center in pittsburg.

it happened last night shortly before 9:00. crews made quick work of the flames knocking them down in less than five minutes. no injuries reported. earlier in the evening a tractor was involved in a crash that closed a stretch of the byron happy. several cars and the tractor crashed. taking a live look at the state capitol, eviction moratorium deadline is looming. today officials with governor newsom's administration are looking to help renters. >> justin andrews is live in concord with the details. this is not a day many are looking forward to this week. >> reporter: that date is thursday, september 30. that is when eviction moratorium is set to end. that's also why some from governor newsom's office will be in concord to help with these renters. these housing advocates say now is not the time to end this moratorium because people are still suffering from the

activists pushing for people to start talking about immigration again. about 100 people marched four hours from santa rosa to hills berg yesterday. they want to put pressure on federal, state, local leaders and work harder to grant legal status to the undocumented. demonstrators walked 12 miles to represent the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the united states. >> we work the hardest jobs here. we maintain the wine industry here. we deserve a path to citizenship and safe and healthy work places. >> sometimes they come in in this county as farm labor and end up working in construction and end up starting their own businesses. they really end up being quite a contribution to the county itself. to the coronavirus, new cases have been gradually dropping. experts say we are not out of the woods yet. over the next months, we could

see the latest surge subside. >> this may be the last major wave of infection. i think by thanksgiving you will seattle this move through the country. the virus isn't going away but prevalence levels will decline to a level that feels more manageable. >> we were seeing seven day average of up to 160,000 cases a day at the peak of the surge. cdc says that is closer to 114,000 new cases per day. dr. scott gottlieb, a former fda commissioner, expects we'll eventually drop to 20,000 a day. world health organization reviving the investigation into the origins of covid-19. it's assembling a new team of 20 scientists, including specialists in lab safety and biosecurity as well as experts on genetics and how animals can transmit viruses to people. this group will have a mandate to hunt for new evidence in china and elsewhere. san francisco politicians will talk of the advantages of a new blood donation center run

by red cross. mayor london breed and a state senator will be on hand at the new facility. red cross wants to increase number of diverse blood donors in the bay area. today's event happens at 11:00 am at the donation center on market street near goff. several regional leaders from red cross will discuss the center's role in adding bay area healthcare. it was a full house at 49ers home opener yesterday. off the tracks. police in novato are investigating a crash and car fire that threatened homes on a hillside. firefighters released a photo of the burned out wreckage above lemont avenue. they say saturday the car veered off a driveway on the hill top and the tires got jammed in a culvert sparking the fire. the two inside escaped injury and crews managed to fight the fire before it reached homes. a new weapon, a fleet of high tech helicopters that will fight fires at night. this used to fly in afghanistan for u.s. army but has been retro quitted to drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant at a time. that's ten times what most fire fighting choppers drop. a group of southern california departments banded together to buy the $18 million chopper. fire experts say it is pretty

low 60s along the coast, mid to upper 60s around the bay. seven-day forecast for san francisco, oakland, san jose, around the bay, better chance of seeing wet weather. san jose, not so much for you. as we head through the week, we are going to warm things. inland east bay, low 90s by the end of our week. north bay and coast, better chance of seeing showers today and warming up as we look to the end of the week. unfortunately this is a deadly crash that's shut down two left lanes at east 80 at el portal. there is an investigation underway. it happened over an hour ago and you've got delays east and west bound and two lanes will be closed for sometime for the investigation. it was involving two cars. one over turned and the vehicle is stuck on its side. west bound 80 is busy and east 80. we are seeing speeds down to

three miles per hour. possibly stick with surface streets until you can get back on the freeway where you won't have brake lights. we had a crash blocking lanes. it is now over to the right shoulder. a busy ride out of the sunol grade. if you are headed to the bay bridge and you are up early, you have a lot of brake lights to deal with. we had a trouble spot near the fremont street exit. metering lights were turned on about 5:40 this morning. traffic is backed up to the foot of the maze if not a bit beyond that. a few brake lights off of 80 and that west bound 580 approach. a wind advisory effect, 53 minutes from 205 towards 680. no crashes but super commuters, you've also got those brake lights building up.

upper levels of the atmosphere but we are looking good at the surface. i am tracking drizzle along the coast and around the bay for a wet start this morning and tracking a weak cold front that will bring light scattered showers through the afternoon. here we are at noon, showers across lake and mendocino. through the rest of the afternoon, better chance of wet weather north of the golden gate. here is 5:00 p.m. with light scattered showers at the north bay, coast, possibly even the san francisco area and looking at a few hundredths of an inch of rain. cool temperatures across the region as we go through the afternoon. let's check with gianna for a look at traffic and the traffic alert. the investigation continues into a deadly crash east bound 80 at el portal. we have two left lanes blocked until further notice. it's noncommute direction but we are tracking brake lights in both directions. stick with san pablo as an alternate to avoid brake lights on the freeways. once you are past that it looks
