hit with a recall notice in the middle of tonight's meeting. the criticism that prompted this unusual scene. >> i'm elizabeth cook. >> city of buffalo sgreeis grie for the ten people killed at a supermarket. >> we're angry, we're mad. this shouldn't have happened. >> there's nothing to take away the pain, take away the hole in our hearts, because part of us is gone. senselessly taken from us by hate. >> president biden and the first lady will visit buffalo tomorrow to meet with families of the victims, first responders and community leaders. meanwhile, the alleged gunman remains on suicide watch in jail. the 18-year-old suspect drove as far as 200 miles to kill as many people as he could.

4:30. a southern california community mourning the man killed at a shooting at a church and giving thanks that his bravery prevented even more people from getting hurt n a vigil held in honor of 52-year-old dr. john chang, chang was killed after he tackled the suspect who opened fire inside the church in laguna woods yesterday. five others were injured. investigators say the 68 68-year-old suspect traveled from las vegas. he used super glue on the doors and locks. the suspect is a u.s. citizen who emigrated from china years ago. >> it's a politically-motivated hate incident a grievance this individual had between himself and the taiwanese community u. >> the atf says he purchased his

home homeless as they can physically see. >> we know the methodology is vulnerable but it gives us a way to estimate how many people in our region are unhoused or most at risk frankly. >> reporter: the numbers may be surprising to some. san francisco saw a drop in homelessness of 3.5% from 2019. >> i think it has a lot to do with the resources, the public-private partnership, all the various things we're doing in san francisco, but it's not easy. it's still a lot of work, and we're going to keep working at it. >> reporter: the city of oakland saw 24% interest. contra costa county saw the largest increase at 35%. counties that take steps to address the crisis by adding shelt shelter beds could experience larger numbers because numbers are easier to count.

kpix 5 it will likely take more than that. >> reporter: epidemiologists say we are now dealing with a subvariant of an omicron subvariant. there is evidence that the offshoot of the subvariant can evade immunity better and spread faster. >> what's really driving their this or the big driver is that the new variants are able to transmit better. >> reporter: the american academy of pediatrics saying children now represent 18% of the cases nationally. san francisco unified saw the largest numbers last week since the height of the omicron surge in january. >> rateight now, things are goi in the wrong direction. we are seeing the virus every week after week go up that ladder, and we've got to stop

that progression, because we're now starting to see more people winding up in the hospital. >> reporter: dr. john schwartzburg with the uc berkley school says once hospitalizations start to rise, so will the number of deaths. >> if what we are doing isn't working we may have to consider doing more. i hate to say that, nobody wants to be told what to do. but if things continue in the direction they're going, we're going to have to make a change. >> reporter: dr. schwartzburg says to change the force of the surge it's important to be vaccinated, boosted and wear masks indoor. so far in the bay area, there's only a recommendation to wear a mask. >> if i'm going to be with a group of people that i don't know and everyone's coming and going, i will wear a mask. >> everyone has different opinions on the mask mandate. but for me, especially indoors, i choose to wear a mask.

new at 11:00, the fda has approved the first over the counter test that detects covid and flu. health care experts will contact people who test positive for any of the viruses. a key step addressing the nationwi nationwide shortage in baby formula. abbott says it has reached a deal with the fda to reopen its plant. it makes about 40% of all the baby formula sold in the u.s., so the plant closure has led to severe shortages. the fda says production could resume in two weeks. the truth is out there, and tomorrow congress may finally shed some light on it. >> for the first time in over 50 years, a house panel will hold an open hearing on ufos.

to its own home, which is always the best case is scenario. you don't want them to venture into your neighborhood at all, but if they do, you want them to make their way back >> nap during the warmth of the day, which there will be plenty of warmth, especially for solano county u county. let's look at the big picture. the warming trend starts with high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. the position of the snow matters the it's going to be much warmer by monday. while the onshore breeze is going to be weaker, we're not going to lose the onshore influence. we're going to see a wide range of temperatures. still cool on the coast. but much, much warmer for inland areas of the bay air. rain chances are robust, zero percent through the rest of this week and into the weekend. we'll keep an eye on this. until we get through the end of may, there's still an outside chance we will get one more

chance of showers. for the medium category tomorrow and wednesday, thursday and friday. the warmer days yielding more pollen. oak, mulberry and grass pollen. the grass pollen not going anywhere. outside, clear skies overhead, temperatures in the 50s across the board. 57 in san jose. we're not seeing a whole lot of fog on the horizon just yet. it's going to dissipate. and high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere will help build the temperature up. it will be where swe should be,

mid-60s. warmer as you go farther inland. upper 70s in san jose. far inblland, you're warmer. the exception to all of this, right along the coast. that onshore breeze going to keep temperatures in the mid-50s for pacifica and half moon bay. a similar trend on wednesday. we're going to be well above average, for most of us, anywhere from 7-15 degrees above normal. couple degrees below average along the coast. that completely losing that onshore influence. it is a noticeable warm up. around 70 in san francisco. upper 70s oakland. cool off a few degrees thursday and jump right back up to above-average temperatures friday, saturday and sunday. upper 80s to around 90 degrees. maybe not that toasty over the weekend, but still well above
