a bay area community divided over a big problem with geese. the passionate debate sparking protests tonight. warmer weather ahead. that means increasing fire damage. the big areas of concern. we know that it starts to wayne about four or five times. >> covid boosters could be available for kids between 5 and 11. but it may not have the impact that health experts hope. police think the same person may be responsible for the burglaries at peninsula mile. as one showed, the suspect seems to know his way around. >> reporter: after morning prayers, a thief wreaked havoc inside. and it wasn't the first time.

>> break into the boxes. we have ra police report. and today also, it was shocked because he's coming back again. >> reporter: tburglary was caugt on camera. this man broke into the mosque around 8:40 a.m. and he appears to be the same man caught on camera breaking in last week. >> we have pictures of him up there. >> reporter: on tuesday's burglary, the suspect stopped to see a picture of himself, pasted up on the building, warning worshipers to look out. he could be familiar with the local islamic community. >> he knows the building. he knows there's cameras. when you see him walking into the building, his head is down, he is wearing a hat and a mask also. he is covering himself really good. he knows what is going on. >> reporter: the man rifled through donation boxes, stealing the money the mosque needs for rent. >> he was coming straight ahead to the boxes, breaking into it. and took whatever was inside. >> reporter: daly city police told us they are still investigating. but the suspect could be the same man that burglarized other

mosques in the area. >> we didn't know until next morning when the brothers came into the mosque, they noticed some of the money was on the floor. >> reporter: leaders at both mosques, say they wish the man had asked for help. >> i wish from the neighborhood in charge, they could get in and see what's going on, before somebody got hurt. tonight, the president of taiwan is among those offering con do condolences and praise for the hero. dr. john chang sacrificed himself by lunging at the shooter on sunday. the suspect used nails and chains to lock the church doors so no one could escape. in the end, dr. chang was the only fatality. he was 52 years old.

>> he was a true, compassionate, caring man. >> he treated me for anxiety and depression, when nobody else really knew about it. he was there for me. >> five congregants were wounded in the shooting. the suspect is facing ten charge, including capital murder. tonight, president biden is calling on the nation to reject extremism after the mass shooting that left ten people in a predominantly black neighborhood in buffalo, new york. >> white supremacy is a poison. what happened here is simple and straightforward terrorism. >> the president and first lady visited the scene of the attack and met privately with the victim victims' families. those that knew the victims are trying to make sense of this tragedy. >> a lot of lives were lost. a lot of good people, lives were lost. this is a senseless act of

hatred. i should be able to respect your opinion and you mine. >> police and fbi agents continue to gather evidence at that shooting scene. the 18-year-old remains in custody after pleading not guilty to first-free murder charges. police in east palo alto are looking for suspects and witnesses after four people were shot at a park. this video just into the newsroom, from jack ferrell park, where police are on-scene collecting evidence at this hour. officers first responded to a shot spotter alert at 6:00 this evening. they found one man suffering from fatal gunshot bowounds. a fourth was in a nearby home and refused treatment. no word on a motive. police tell us they do not believe it was a random act. turning to weather now. temperatures are about to start

ramping up and so is that fire danger. >> we are tracking the conditions. >> a big jump in temperatures on wednesday. and the high fire dangers are going to arrive thursday into friday. let's look at tomorrow's temperature map. before i put the numbers on there, let's look at the colors. we're using a full range of skittles colors. 60s along the coast, to 90s inland. for most of us, we're talking about temperatures that will top out in the 70s around the bay, with low 80s farther inland. and the map is refusing to move for me. let me step over to the computer and see if i can get it to go. see how this proceeds. and we'll try to make it actual actually advance. there we go. there's the numbers we wanted. 5 to 10 degrees above average around the bay, with temperatures farther inland. 10 to 15 degrees above normal. 19 degrees in concord. these renumbers aren't record setting. but we have a fire watch in

solano county, thursday into friday. the greatest fire threat will be in the central valley. we'll see a combination of gusty winds and low humidity levels, coming up in the full forecast. >> thank you. a vocal protest in foster city tonight, on behalf of some of the city's cloloudest reside. the pushback on the plan to defend a flock of canadian geese. dozens of protesters urged the city council to reconsider a plan to euthanize a portion of the 300 geese that live around the city's waterways. >> i know this is a difficult decision for■ç the city to make. but we think there's got to be alternatives to actually killing them. >> the city has been dealing with the overpopulation of geese for years and have tried ways to control the numbers, including

birth control, dog hazing, strobe lights and sensing. the goose population has doubled in the last two years. residents say because of them, there's plenty of this and enough of it that it's basically impossible to enjoy the park. >> i always have to dodge the geese droppingdroppings. >> reporter: that's one of the big concerns, the amount of waste they create, that pollutes waterways and sullies the city park. >> i am a big fan of the geese. what i don't like is the geese poop. >> reporter: not for others. >> there's conversations about the dog poop out there. what's the difference with the geese poop? >> reporter: the city council is taking up the issue tonight. organizers hope to stop plans to euthanize the geese before it becomes an action item in the future. in foster city, kpix 5.

oakland has declared itself a sanctuary city for abortion rights. that's in response to the upcoming decision that could overturn roe v. wade. some welcome news for many parents tonight. >> the fda just signed off on boosters for 5-year-olds to 11-year-olds, after pfizer reporte ed an increase in antiantibody s after the third shot. it might not have the impact at officials a hoping for. >> reporter: the fda says for the most part, covid has been less severe among children than adults. with omicron seeing more kids get sick, being hospitalized and experiencing long covid, many doctors say the booster is coming just in time. >> it's time for kids to be considered for boosters. immunity starts to wain about in four to five months.

>> reporter: that was controlled out last november. and according to the study, e t the effectiveness of the doses has falling during the omicron surge. >> i think it will be good, right? just make sure you have a strong immunity sense. >> reporter: according to d dr. moldanado, the number of kids in this age group that have received the first two shots is extremely low. >> only 8 of 28 million kids in the states have even two vaccines. they need to get the first vaccinations, as well. >> reporter: according to the academy of pediatrics, covid dropped to its lowest point since early april, but since then, has jumped 260%. a cdc advisory committee will meet on thursday to look at the data and decide whether or not to get final approval. come of the data available

tonight, police have detained a man in connection with a fire that scorched part of a los angeles park. that fire broke out just below griffith park observatory about 3:00 this afternoon. at one point, rangers blocked people from using the trails. painters spotted someone setting the fires. shortly after that, a man was taken into custody.

that fire grew to eight eacres before they got it under control. 79-year-old lucille was found dead in her home in 1988. police say she was strangled, stabbed and sexually assaulted. 34 years later, a dna match from her fingernail scrapings just identified her killer. investigators say it was this man. terry leroy bramble. this mug shot is from 2009. officials say he was a homeless sex offender who died of natural causes in 2011. the dna was on file from a sex assault case in san joaquin county. a woman got a wild surprise when she took in a stray kitten. >> it wasn't a kitten, it was a baby fox. concerned family members placed a call to animal control in rockland. they relocated the little fox to a local wildlife rescue where it

is properly cared for. >> it could have been a mountain lion, i guess. >> i first saw the eyes. maybe it's a baby bobcat or mountain lion. a fox is very different. very sweet. you can see where she would fall in love with it. maybe not necessarily meant for n domestic purposes. no. >> i saw that story in a rundown and quickly looked up baby fox, just to see could you mistake a fox for a kitten. it looks like a fox. >> yeah. >> so, it's cute. >> what a bushy tail. >> sharp, little needle teeth. they have that in common. let's look at what's happening in the weather, as we head to the next couple days. mostly clear skies. we're not going to see much fog. warmer temperatures, especially inland as we head to the rest of the week and the weekend. rm warmer temperatures often coincides with a higher fire threat. thursday and friday aren't the warmest days but will bring a

change in wind direction. offshore winds, combined with humidity, will escalate the fire threat. we showed you solano county thursday and friday. the humidity levels are forecast to be below 10% by late thursday afternoon, into thursday evening. combine that with the gusty offshore winds and that really escalates the fire threat. now, despite the fact there's no other counties around the bay area under any fire weather watches or red flag warnings, it doesn't mean the fire threat is zero. we have to watch this carefully thursday, thursday night and friday. the worst combination of low humidity and gusty winds will take shape in the central valley, as opposed to directly over the bay area. just a hint of fog on the horizon. it won't be widespread at all. temperatures in the low to mid-60s. these numbers aren't going to drop a lot as we head through the rest of tonight. the winds will continue to calm down through the rest of tonight and into tomorrow morning. it's that lack of a strong

onshore wind that will allow temperatures to warm up. on the coast, you should get into the 60s before the wind kicks back in. san francisco should make it up to 70, upper 70s for oakland and the east bay. but the onshore wind does kick in into the evening and the temperatures will cool down. and it's not going to be strong enough to push the marine layer into the inland valley. we're in the 40s and 50s tomorrow morning. the last game of the a's series against the twins, unseasonably warm temperatures, starting in the 70s. first pitch at 12:40 wednesday afternoon. temperatures will top out in the upper 70s. layer up and don't forget the sunscreen. the coolest spots, along the coast. low 60s. at least you will make it out of the 50s. 80 on the peninsula. and south end of the bay, mid to upper 80s in the santa clara valley. low 90s around concord and low to mid 90s east.

96, the hot spot in fair field. up to 70 in san francisco, about 2:00 and then back into the 60s. upper 70s to around 80 degrees, with mostly mid to upper 80s. as you go inland, with the warmer spots topping out around 90 degrees and farther. temperatures will back off a little bit with the northerly winds on thursday. despite the cooler temperatures, those are the fire threat days, thursday and friday. not much change to our temperatures overall, over the next several days. we'll cstay above average. well into the 80s around san jose. some spots inland on the east bay and the north bay, getting around 90 degrees intermittently. no records in store, but unseasonably warm weather. eve of the nba conference finals, warriors/mavericks out west. and the celtics and heat couldn't wait. and baseball, the giants using rockies stadium as a

launching pad.
