>> reporter: police have sort of started moving out of here. there are also police down the street at a certain senator's house that i noticed earlier this evening. we just had a little more from san francisco police. they spoke at length about the opening moments of all of this and apparently some fantastic police work on the dispatcher end at 911. what it sounds like is that mr. pelosi was able to get a phone call out of this building as everything started to unfold this morning, but he cannot say much. i'm reading between the lines here a little bit. he couldn't say much, but that dispatcher could hear what sounded like threats , and maybe someone saying, you don't need to do this. don't do this. she could hear a little bit of that, but that was enough for her to know that something really bad was unfolding in his house. she hit the gas on getting some people here as fast as she could. >> i also like to thank our emergency dispatcher, heather
6:02 pm
grimes, who is standing here to our left, for a really amazing job. >> reporter: chief scott to the dispatcher did not know who's home this was, but what she could hear on the phone prompted her to get officers here as quickly as possible. >> he doesn't know who the man is. he says he is a friend. he is somewhat confused. >> reporter: when he arrived, he said he found 82-year-old paul pelosi struggling with an intruder. >> there was one hammer and fall. there was an altercation. mr. pelosi and mr. depape were struggling for control. >> reporter: with the inside the residence? >> i cannot go into that. >> reporter: the suspect had said, where is nancy , not much more is known about what happened in the home . >> the motive for this attack is still being determined. >> it is not surprising to me at all, what's happening in our country right now. it just scares me to even think about
6:03 pm
things that could potentially happen on voting day , on november 8th. >> reporter: even after years of protest and some vandalism at the pelosi home, neighbors say this attack is an unsettling shock. >> i think what happened is terrifying. that someone would break into a private home . it was clearly a targeted attack for speaker pelosi, from what i've read and heard, that the assailant was looking for her. >> reporter: no security at the home this morning because the speaker was in washington, d.c. very fortunate that the call was made , that the dispatcher got the call and could tell something was going on. it could have been much worse. >> wilson, thank you. a major investigation is happening now into the suspect and his potential motive. we are learning more about the man who is a pro nudity activists in san francisco's castro who who was recently caught up in a
6:04 pm
world of conspiracy theories. kenny choi joins us with what we know about him. kenny? >> reporter: juliette, we just heard from the police chief that there still is no clear motive in this case, but he did emphasize that the attack was not random. we are also getting a clearer picture of who he was, david wayne depape, from his on my post. 42-year-old david depape grew up in british columbia came to california for love. his stepfather says he hasn't seen his stepson in nearly 2 decades, but that is a child, he was quiet and never violence. >> we do know that at the point at which the police arrived, he did turn and use that hammer against the speaker's husband in a manner that appeared that he was intending to kill him. >> reporter: in san francisco's castro district, he was known locally as a pro nudity activists.
6:05 pm
>> i was surprised he entered the speaker's home. that's really jarring. it's not what i would have expected. i'm not surprised that there was someone that wanted to do harm to the speaker. that's not shocking to me at all. there are a lot of people who want to do harm. >> reporter: before his arrest early morning inside the pelosi home, on my post obtained by cnn suggest a man obsessed with conspiracy healing to mental videos by mike lindell falsely claiming the 2020 election was stolen. these posts stand in tark stark contrast , festooned with signs promoting black lives matter and piece. assign text to the fence told reporters
6:06 pm
to stay away. >> reporter: there have been conflicting reports about whether depape has been booked into jail. you heard from san francisco police chief confirming he is still in the hospital, that the suspect, depape , is still in the hospital. we did check the sheriff's website. he is officially been booked , but again, she's scott saying that that can be done in absentia. juliette, back to you. >> we should note, i'm outside of the hospital where paul pelosi is. he is out of surgery. he is recovering . he is expected to make a full recovery. as you might imagine, a lot of reaction coming into the attack with lawmakers from both speaking out. the white house says president biden called speaker pelosi to offer his support and said he condemns all violence . california governor gavin newsom also condemned the violent attack tweeting , the heinous assault on paul pelosi is another example of the dangerous consequences of the divisive and hateful rhetoric putting lives at risk and
6:07 pm
undermining our very democracy and democratic institutions . those who use their platforms to incite violence must be held to account. house minority leader kevin mccarthy also commented on the attack . a spokesperson says mccarthy reached out to the speaker to check in on paul and said he is praying for a full recovery and is thankful they caught the assailant. we have more live coverage on the paul pelosi attack still ahead. we talk to retired --

6:11 pm
joins us live near the pelosi home with more on that part of the story. lauren? >> reporter: california is home to some of the highest ranking political leaders on capitol hill. house speaker nancy pelosi based here in san francisco. we also have house minority leader, kevin mccarthy, based in southern california . on top of that, a half-dozen other senior members of congress all based out of california. this with the u.s. capitol police to open a field office here in san francisco to protect these really senior members of congress. but with the terrifying event like what happened with paul pelosi this morning, it is highlighting it through the politically motivated violence across the country. attempted attacks on political figures have skyrocketed in the last five years as the state of politics become more contentious in the country. jeff harp has spent his career in the fbi protecting these leaders from being the subject of harm and 14 politically motivated attacks. stomach i've protected dignitaries for a number of

years . high-ranking people and very affluent positions. one thing that's surprising to me is that someone could just walk into a house or break into a house without it being known. >> reporter: the attack on nancy pelosi's husband is the latest example of this striking rising political related violence. and although a motive remains unclear, harp says this instance is on trend with other tax linked to public access. >> we are seeing more and more high profile people being threatened or attacked . i think we can attribute that to social media. >> reporter: although not much is known about the suspect, david depape, authorities say he used a hammer to attack the speaker's 82-year-old husband. >> they probably used whatever tool he had with him to break the glass. you don't always have to have a tool. you can knock the glass in. you reach your hand inside and opened the door. once you're in, unless the door has door contacts on

it for an alarm system, you're not going to know that. >> reporter: speaker nancy pelosi and other high-ranking officials reported protections by the secret service and u.s. capitol police, but with major costs associated with such protection, the service is not often extended to private members of their family. >> as the speaker of the house, her popularity, whether it's negative or positive, is really easy to use the internet today to find out where someone lives. there's lots of records that are available. you literally cannot hide anymore. i'm sure the government, the secret service, the park police, and everyone else that has jurisdictional protection for those individuals in the government will take a closer look at how they can extend that to family members. >> this is an ongoing investigation. is now in the hands of the san francisco police department. federal agencies are all on standby to
6:14 pm
help sfpd in any way they can. >> we have learned so much , first and foremost, that family neighbors don't have that security that we thought they might have . and because the speaker was not in the bay area, he was left without security. so, you must think with these increasing threats to lawmakers, their families, has anything changed with this kind of protection? will it change? did you glean any information on that side of it? >> reporter: yeah , that is certainly at the top of mine for a lot of lawmakers this evening. in the wake of the january 6 attack last year on the u.s. capitol, the house sergeant of arms actually established a program that provides all of the house members, all 435 members of the house, with a $10,000 stipend to either establish a security system or improve their security systems . this is for adding cameras, adding motional motion systems, glass break systems, motion detecting lights, anything they can to really beat up the

security systems. but with election day , this big midterm election, we have coming up in just under two weeks, we can expect local law enforcement all across the country to be a heightened awareness, not only for political leaders and members of congress , but also to keep private citizens safe. juliette? >> thank you. appreciate your live report. all of this discussion about violence and extremism comes as there are new questions about the future of twitter and the spread of information on the platform. the elon musk era is officially underway. he took control after a month long legal battle with the social media giant , and he is already deadly ousted several top executives . a long time twitter employee told us , she is bracing for major changes. >> the number one thing is our day-to-day. are we going to get laid off? he said 75%. that's his number. that's the number one concern of everyone right
