>>right now at 530. a high stakes meeting at the white house today, a new indications that the trade wars may stretch on. president trump met with canada's new prime minister, mark carney, in the oval office today. relations between the two countries have been strained since the trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on some canadian goods in march. president trump said today he will not back down when it comes to tariffs. those tariffs have helped set off a modern day gold rush, though the price of a one ounce reaching more than $3,400 today, up more than 28% for the year. we spoke to a collector about what's behind that surge.

>>seth chandler. this is real gold. it's not afraid to admit. we have here an american eagle. he has a bit of gold fever. and then we have a canadian maple leaf. so these are really cool. and since 1959, his store with a coin has been in the business of buying and selling precious metals. once you own it, you can put it in the safe deposit box, hide it under your mattress, your shoe, whatever you want. but. but you have it. you own it. and recently, with the price of gold reaching record highs, that has kept chandler busy seeing his own mini gold rush of people inside his store in san francisco, a city that in 1849 was the center of the gold universe. let's be very, very clear. there would be no san francisco without the gold rush. the gold rush was instrumental in the creation of san francisco, in fact, the american west. and speaking about the san francisco gold rush, there's still mining for nuggets just

like these. this was found about five years ago, worth about $10,000. i mean, gold has been around forever. joe halpern, chief investment officer of fountainhead, says the recent interest in gold can be tied to the volatility in the stock market. since the start of the trump administration. it's been going up for a while now for over the last year. but you really saw lift after liberation day, on april 2nd. at first, gold moved down with the whole market, but then it increased dramatically. and gold is really a flight to safety. and so when people are nervous, they tend to sell out of those risky assets like an apple or a microsoft, and they go into treasury or gold. meanwhile, for chandler. because these are really rare. his golden rule is not to give out investment advice, but he understands people's fascination with physical gold. you have a one ounce gold coin in your hand. it feels very heavy. it feels like real money. real currency that some will

always believe is good. as gold. >>and if you want to invest in gold, the easiest way is to buy into a gold etf or a mutual fund. but if you want to buy physical gold like coins or nuggets, you can have a third party store it for you. if you don't feel like or you don't feel comfortable holding on to it in your yourself at your house, well, get ready to pay more for flowers. the trump tariffs are expected to drive up prices just as we head into mother's day, along with graduation and wedding season. 80% of flowers consumed in the united states are grown elsewhere. last year, the u.s. imported $2.2 billion worth of cut flowers and greens, mostly from south america. and for florists. many of their containers, vases and other accessories. will those come from china and face even stiffer fines? that all adds up to higher costs for consumers. >>we're going to do the best we can to sort of keep those prices where they need to be, but people can definitely
5:36 pm
expect to be paying a little bit more. >>meantime, reviews are in for president trump's proposal to impose tariffs on foreign films, and the reception is not being kind. carter evans, on the actor behind the unusual idea and why it could hurt rather than help hollywood studios. >>in hollywood. the reviews are in for president trump's plan to impose 100% tariffs on movies shot outside the u.s.. it's getting panned. are you worried for your industry? yeah, i'm worried for the industry. i'm worried for my livelihood. monique white is executive vice president at california pictures, a los angeles based distributor of independent films. it's either going to put a nail in the coffin or it's going to incentivize us to figure out alternative ways to do production. the motion picture association says the u.s. already exports triple the film content that it imports, with a more than $15 billion surplus in 2023. cbs news has confirmed that actor jon voight, one of the

president's special ambassadors to hollywood, came up with the tariff idea. they given financing by other countries. they've given a lot of things, and the industry was decimated. movies like mission impossible often seek out exotic locales for filming. white told us tariffs would hurt more than just the bottom line. it's stifling creativity. so if someone wants to shoot something that's got a certain backdrop, you can't shoot it here. you have to go to the authentic place. it's still unclear what the tariffs would be based on production costs. box office receipts or something else. among the people you're talking to, the insiders, do they really think this is going to happen? i'm not sure, to be honest. everybody is very afraid, that's for sure. everybody's very worried. so if this comes to reality, then this could all just go away tomorrow. it's not clear if the president has the authority to implement tariffs on foreign made films. if he does, it will likely face legal challenges. >>well, just about two hours ago, the white house announced

that top u.s. officials will meet with representatives from china this weekend. that will happen in switzerland. these will be the first major talks since the president imposed steep tariffs on chinese imports. wild scene as protesters take over a building at the university of washington. why? they say it is a message to a us defense giant. >>that starts with this building, which is why we're repurposing it into a community led, educational space. >>plus, the war of words is heating up again as the warriors head to round two matchup with the timberwolves. we're going to hear fro

contractor, in addition to a commercial aviation giant, the group occupied an academic building partly funded by the defense giant. >>we want to rid boeing's influence from our campus, and that starts with this building, which is why we're repurposing it into a community led, educational space. we would like to rid boeing's influence from campus completely, as well as other companies that profit from war. >>police say more than two dozen people were arrested. the supreme court has ruled that the trump administration can immediately begin enforcing its ban on transgender service members in the military. the justices granted an emergency request to lift a nationwide injunction blocking the policy. while legal challenges play out. the defense department policy will not allow transgender americans to join any branch of the military. the ban also includes removing transgender troops currently serving. the court's three liberal judges dissented. well, the eyes of the world will be on the vatican starting tomorrow. that's when cardinal

>>here we go. first alert weather time and temperatures return to closer to what's normal for this time of year across the bay area. today we are going to be riding a pretty substantial temperature roller coaster over the course of the next several days. but let's take a look at the big picture perspective here, and talk about a system that's going to be heading our way by the time we head into
5:46 pm
early next week, and we track those, one of the ways is by looking at temperatures in the upper levels of the atmosphere, and the cold air shows up in purple, and there's a system that's going to be swinging towards the west coast and the bay area. as we wind the clock forward. this goes through sunday night into early monday morning, and this is pretty far south for this time of year. let me take remember where the purple is. take the temperatures off and you can see how close it is to california and the bay area. in fact, this far south doesn't give it access to a whole lot of moisture, but enough that we do have a chance of showers. that's in the extended forecast for monday and monday night. too soon to get too excited about it, but just something we're going to watch as we head through the next several days. in the short term, i see a little haze on the horizon as we look out from black mountain towards san jose and the santa clara valley. temperature in san jose, still 73 degrees. it's also 73 in concord and 74 in livermore, down to 66 in santa rosa and low to mid 60s for san francisco and oakland. a lot, lot closer to what we're used to in the month of may. completely complete with that onshore breeze and the return of the fog as well. let's track that as we head through the rest of tonight and into early
5:47 pm
tomorrow morning. this takes us through 8:00 tomorrow morning with the fog along the coast pushing across the bay and well into the inland valleys by early on wednesday morning. so a gray start to the day for most of the bay area. but inland, it's not going to take too long for that fog to retreat. already by 8 a.m. we start to see it dissipating east of the oakland hills because the sun comes up at 6 a.m. so sun's been up for a couple hours, starts burning through that fog pretty quickly where it does burn through quickly. that's where temperatures are more likely to reach up into the 70s by tomorrow afternoon. let's take a look at those forecast highs which are going to reach up into the 70s in the santa clara valley, mid to upper 70s, a couple degrees above average. you're really the only spot. it's going to be above normal, few degrees below average east of the oakland hills, mostly in the low to mid 70s. temperatures in the north bay where the fog hangs on a little bit longer, mostly confined to the 60s. just healdsburg getting up into the low 70s. and it's going to be cool in san francisco and oakland with highs in the low to mid 60s and only in the mid to upper 50s along the coast by tomorrow afternoon. so definitely chilly by this month's standards even
5:48 pm
for may. it's going to be on the cool side. but things are going to change as we hit the end of the workweek thursday and friday. the winds aren't going to be as strong, so this tracks the wind gusts. every six hours. you see more of the yellowish orange shaded panels on the forecast for tomorrow, indicating 20 to 30 mile an hour onshore gusts. those will be fewer and farther between by thursday afternoon, so just a weaker onshore breeze as those inland temperatures to step up a little bit with a big jump for the end of the workweek on friday, livermore jumps up to 90 degrees on friday. that's the latest estimate from some of the forecast models, with a slight drop in temperatures saturday and then a huge drop. we're talking about an 18 degree decrease from saturday to sunday. the cooler air sticks around for the first half of next week, and that is associated with our chance for a few showers. we're still below the 5050 line on our rain chart over the course of the next seven days, but there's a chance, so we'll keep an eye on that. it wouldn't amount to much more than a few hundredths of an inch of rain, but any chance of rain in the month of may is worth talking about. let's take a look at seven day forecast for the coast. yeah, some ups and downs, but the
5:49 pm
warmest day friday and the coolest day next tuesday, only separated by about eight degrees or so. a little more variability around the bay. everybody has that chance of showers in the forecast by next monday. but we're just phrasing as showers possible. not a guarantee. far from it. bayside temperatures reach up to the mid 70s friday and then down to the mid 60s by monday and tuesday of next week. inland temperatures here are the big ups and downs up to the low 80s, thursday, upper 80s, friday and then down to only the upper 60s by monday with that chance of showers even making its way farther into inland parts of the bay area, we'll be keeping an eye on that over the course of the next several days. for now, though, juliette is here with a check of what's coming up. coming up at six. >>all right. thank you. coming up at 6:00. fed up with crime. neighbors in one east bay city put up their own license plate readers. and now they say it's time for the city to pay for them. plus, we'll introduce you to a college student trying out a new program that set him up with a room to rent. he just needs to do lots of housework for the couple that owns it. and then we'll meet some

players couldn't be more excited to put on a show for the home fans. >>i am ready for that. i mean, it kind of just took my breath away just thinking about it. but i mean, at the end of the day, this is all what we're here for. we're here to bring these fans something that they've been waiting for for a long time. so they're definitely going to be entertained. they're definitely going to be proud of our effort, and they're going to be happy to see what's in store for this season. so i can't wait for that. >>big day for the golden state brand. the warriors are minutes away from game one of their second round series at the timberwolves, moving pictures on the late show. it will be a treat for young superstar anthony edwards. ant-man, who was waiting to face the warriors in the playoffs for quite some time now. >>i want to play the warriors. i want to get to the warriors. wherever they at. i want to get to them. actually got you by the warriors so much. i mean, because draymond talked so much trash. >>draymond green not a fan of
