becomes a reality. meet the man on a mission to find true love, one state at a time. >>hi, i'm sara donchey. it is a new era in the bay area. the golden state valkyries hit the court tonight at chase center for the team's first game in the wnba. it was a preseason matchup with the los angeles sparks, and it delivered for all the fans there to welcome the league's newest team. vern glenn is here on what has been a very, very busy evening of basketball. this was a huge deal. this is sort of the start of everything. >>oh >>oh, >>boy. >>boy. >>it >>it >>drew >>drew >>a >>a >>crowd. i mean, so much time in the making and it finally >>it. >>and you know what? it was >>almost >>the perfect storm. >>storm. >>valkyrie is a >>a >>wave of momentum behind them. even though they slid down 14 at half. this team, essentially a startup, fed off a boisterous chase center crowd, rallied, fell one point shy in a

thriller, and that was a preseason game. they stormed the chase. center court shot poorly early, one for 14 from deep by the half, hosted their rivals from la. the sparks different team. third quarter exploded for 32 points. leticia amiri tied it at 57. she scored 20. defensive play of the night julie van loo stole the ball. oh! the pass to caitlin chen. and that got the fans loud. now a key turnover cost him. la won the game 8382. but tonight in air quotes felt like a win for the valkyries. >>everyone's a little >>nervous. >>everyone had a little first game jitters, as they should because that crowd was amazing. our crowd came, our crowd showed up. it felt like a playoff game. that's what it really felt like. you said you wanted to play at chase center. that's what you wanted to do most. what was it like out there? it was awesome. it was better than i even expected. the crowd just
11:03 pm
pushed us to come back. they're so loud. yeah. it's just it's really like you're playing with six, actually, not with five on the court. the way the fans were cheering, it feels like we came out with the win. may 16th. that's our first home opener. so we need the bay to show up. >>how about mo billings with the promo? valkyries take their preseason show on the road sunday at phoenix. 230 pregame show on pix plus. formerly 44 cable 12. now later in sports. what is going on with steph curry's injury? >>yes. >>it didn't. look good. >>i know we're going to talk about that. but first, i think this is a sign of good things to come for a preseason game. i know this is the start of everything. that was a lot of energy. so. all right, lots to talk about, vern. thank you. we'll see you in just a second. chase center was decked out in valkyries violet. so were many of the fans who were filling in to watch our kelsey thord was also there. she has been following the team all through
11:04 pm
training camp to this moment, where she says the bay area is already really embracing the squad. >>the first ever valkyries game took over chase center tuesday night, and the fans could not have been more excited. i'm a season ticket holder. i've never bought a season ticket for anything in my life. i come to warriors games but have never spent that kind of money. i'm so excited. ahead of the game, fans were treated to a little block party in thrive city. season ticket holders were even gifted matching jackets. nice little patch on it. one of a kind, one of a kind. it's got the valkyrie logo on the inside, so i'm really excited for this. the excitement palpable among fans of all ages. peyton, how excited are you tonight? five out of five. i mean, ten. oh ten yeah. well, your other your other

hands are full of pom poms, so i get it. have you ever been to a women's basketball game before? i'm going right now. you are going. right now? yeah. what is a girl one. i know? how cool is that? good. more than 10,000 people bought season tickets for this inaugural year, including the monroe speed family, who we first met back on wnba draft night. that just shows you the demand of the women's sport right now. i mean, we've been waiting and it's been taking forever. and you see everybody out here, they said this is the largest season ticket holder. purchase for any women's sport. so this is great. and while in the end the game didn't tip the valkyries way, fans told us they still left with a big dose of optimism going into the regular season. we loved it so good. such a close game, so many highlights. the like three pointer at the end. amazing. we almost won. close enough. you know we did.
11:06 pm
we did great. that was a great show for a season opener. really excited. >>the valkyries head coach natalie nakase made history before the team played its first game. she is the first asian american coach in the wnba. over the nba, there's only been one asian-american head coach in less than 2% of the players are asian. compare that to the bay area itself, where 2020 census data shows more than a quarter of the population is asian. nichols says her new position is an opportunity to connect with the community. >>i just spoke to someone who understood that my dad, when we talk about being proud, i said, he does the head nod and she resonated with that. she's like my dad. my dad did that to. >>by the way, you can find all of our stories for aapi heritage month on kpix.com, and be sure to watch our special legacy and leadership on pix plus, you can see it thursday, may 22nd at 7:30 p.m. and may 24th at 7 p.m. to oakland. now,

an update after burglars targeted a popular lgbtq nightclub in the heart of the city. it was all caught on camera. the owners of nightclub gave us surveillance video. two people in masks were caught last week breaking into a storage room and running out with a cart full of stuff. a ring camera captured a clearer look at their faces. the two of them did some major damage and made off with thousands of dollars worth of alcohol. the club has been hit nearly a dozen times and insurance isn't covering it. now, community members are coming together to try and support the local hotspot, recoup some of those losses. amanda hari takes us to tacos for a cause. >>multiple >>tables filled kericho nightclub for a taco tuesday fundraiser, trying to turn a break in into a bounce back. rick hernandez graham lives in castro valley and doesn't come into oakland as >>much >>anymore. >>it all just kind of fell back into
11:08 pm
place. >>but a last minute personal matter brought him into town and he remembered a social media post about tacos for a cause, a fundraiser to support kiriko. >>we were on our way up here and i thought, today's the taco benefit thing too, so we'll do both at once. >>kiriko is trying to cover the $5,000 in damages and thousands more in alcohol lost during a break in on april 29th. >>safe >>video from the most recent break-in shows the suspects moving around the back room before disabling a camera. hernandez graham worries the bar is being targeted because it's the only lgbtq latin club in northern california. >>there are people that have walked around their whole lives with a target on their back. all we can do is protect them. all we can do is support them. when they when they fall, we can. we can help pick them up. >>hey, rico, owner of valentino carrillo, says it is the 11th

time his business has been broken into, and it only opened in 2021. >>over four years that we've been broken into. during that time, i estimate we've lost over 100 k. >>he says it impacts every part of his business. >>it definitely affects, you know, staff morale and salaries, upgrades we want to do to the bar, community events that we do. >>a long term lease at their downtown location near franklin and 15th street means they can't just move. >>it's very frustrating. i mean, there's very little we can do as far as i mean, we fortify the place, we make a lot of changes, but every time they figure out a way to do something. >>but customers like hernandez graham keep coming to and they plan to keep supporting to help offset the costs of the break ins and hopefully find a. >>a tri-valley neighborhood is
11:10 pm
drying up, but the fight over who will get the water flowing again is still going on. what's happening between one neighborhood in the city of pleasanton, and how much it's going to cost to fix? plus, a skier stranded after falling down a mountain in the sierra shares his story of survival, how it happened and how he was found. >>after a warm start to the workweek yesterday, temperatures today back down to just a little above average, especially away from the coast. but another drop in temperatures tomorrow that won't last long. we're tracking. >>and if you think you'd go the distance for love, wait until you meet this guy traveling around the united states just to get a girlfriend. >>tonight for 90s, our air traffic control system was. are.

>>the city of oakland's money problems are definitely not definitely not new. and they're not going to go away in the blink of an eye, certainly. but interim mayor kevin jenkins says he has a plan to tackle the $265 million deficit over the next two fiscal years. and he says it would also protect police and fire services. the plan would slash 80 currently staffed jobs, though city officials think they can reduce that to fewer than a dozen by shuffling people to vacant positions. the budget would also fund 678 police officers and 23 fire engine companies, but shut down two of them on a rotating basis. the budget relies on a proposed property tax hike. if the city council signs off on it, it would go
11:14 pm
before voters in june of next year. last month, oakland voters approved an increase in the city's sales tax to help address its budget issues. but some oaklanders say they should not have to be on the hook for this. >>every time the city council has some brilliant idea that's going to cost a lot of money, who do they turn to? us. >>so if passed, the proposed parcel tax could bring in another $40 million to the city. the city council has to vote on the budget by the end of june. after a string of burglaries and break-ins, people in one orinda neighborhood are taking matters into their own hands. the group spent $11,000 for two license plate readers to monitor the knickerbocker neighborhood. the city already has 19 flock cameras, but only seven were installed by orinda officials. the rest were installed by neighborhood groups or hoas, and now residents want the city to pay for 15 more cameras. >>understand that getting city governments and city budgets to
11:15 pm
do things sometimes can take time. this wasn't something we could wait around on, so we wanted to lead by example. >>the orinda city council is also being asked to pick up the contract on the two cameras at the neighborhood installed. those are currently on a two year contract, and over in the tri-valley, people are stuck without running water. it's been dry for days and there is no plan to get the water flowing again. the neighborhood is locked in a battle over who should pay to replace a crumbling water main. this is the track neighborhood in unincorporated pleasanton. john ramos went there to talk to people who have been using fire hoses connected to hydrants, just to get a little bit of water. >>in the middle of pleasanton is a small neighborhood known as the riemann tract, that years ago refused to be annexed into the city. rick hempy lives here and says that's what's behind the disagreement over the neighborhood's water pipes. >>these lines that are in here are were put in in 1950 two inch steel
11:16 pm
lines, and they are disintegrating. and the sea of pleasanton used to come out here and fix them. but now they're saying you're on your own because you're in the county, even though you get city services, water, sewer, police, fire. we don't care. >>in august, this water main started leaking and when the city came out to fix it, they discovered that the whole thing needed to be replaced. they rigged up a temporary supply line using fire hoses connected to a hydrant. but the city says they will not be replacing the permanent line. in a statement, they said, quote, the water system within riemann tract is privately owned and just as the city does not maintain individual property owners water lines, it cannot maintain the private water lines within the riemann tract. end quote. needless to say, the homeowners disagreed. >>this is the city of pleasanton service territory for this municipal utility, and anything on their side of the meter is their responsibility. it's in
11:17 pm
the city of pleasanton municipal code. so it's just it's cut and dry as far as i'm concerned. >>so that's how things stayed for nine months until about five days ago. >>so yeah, i was really surprised when i was on the phone and a bunch of like eight trucks came out here and removed the temporary hoses in like less than five minutes and, and took off. i think they thought we might have an uprising or something, i don't know. so how many houses total have no water? six. and they're just kind of stuck right now. they're stuck. >>well, not really, because the neighbors are helping each other out. hoses have been extended from one house to another to supply the six who were left high and dry. >>yeah, we had to rig this up because i couldn't flush my toilet or anything. you know. you guys are kind of having to create your own water system here. yes, very much so. >>and rick says the effort has only brought the neighborhood closer together. >>that hose is coming from his rental way over there. so it's going through three yards
11:18 pm
coming over here to take care of these three houses. now that's nice neighbors. that's good people. >>so far, there is no resolution in sight. the neighbors say the city is trying to wash its hands of the problem, although they'll have to go to >>another. oh, that is a lot of work. okay. neighbors say it would cost them about $6,000 each to replace the line, but they say pleasanton charges them the same water rates as any other municipal customer. that's why they expect the city to repair the broken line. a solo ski trip took. it turned into a rescue mission when aidan welch was adjusting his skis, and then fell 800ft down the mountain. he broke multiple bones and was stranded hours away from civilization without cell service. aidan says he shattered his left heel, dislocated his left shoulder, broke and dislocated his left upper arm bone, broke his right hand, cut his left eyelid and he had a concussion. still, he somehow found the strength to trek four and a half miles all the way back to his car. in
11:19 pm
that condition, it took him eight hours to do it, but he finally found where he parked in the forest. at 130 in the morning. a sheriff's deputy who had been searching for him happened to be waiting right by his car. >>he said, i looked like a sasquatch dragging one ski out, you know, limping. and, you know, he he he got me. he saved me. in that situation, anybody can do anything. don't give up. >>i mean, i can't even imagine the kind of pain that he was in in that moment. and despite all of that, aidan said he still plans to go skiing again next season after he's recovered. >>first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at wkyc.com. kia movement that inspires. we saw a return to much closer to normal temperatures across the bay area today, and we are in for quite a roller coaster ride as we head through the next several days, complete with even a chance of showers early next week. one of the ways that we can track those storm systems is by looking at
11:20 pm
temperatures in the upper levels of the atmosphere, so we're going to turn that on. and the colder temperatures are associated with the presence of storm systems. and there's one of these that's going to be making a run towards the west coast as we head through the weekend into early next week. and this is moving much farther south than they typically do as we approach the midpoint of may, we turn those temperatures off. so you can see exactly where that swirl of purple is located. and it's very close to the bay area, again, unusually far to the south, which gives us a rather unusual early to mid-may chance of showers, but it's still several days away. there's a lot of ways that things can still change between now and then. let's take a look at the wind speeds as we head through the next couple of days. the winds have been calming down over the past few hours, and they're going to continue in that vein through the rest of tonight. we'll see the winds picking back up though, as we head through the day tomorrow, and that onshore breeze is going to push the cooler air farther and farther inland. the winds won't be quite as strong as we head through the day on thursday, and just the lack of a strong onshore wind is going to allow inland temperatures to rise up already, and then temperatures really spike as we hit the end
11:21 pm
of the workweek on friday. of course, that onshore breeze, just part of the reason why temperatures are cooling down. the other is the return of the marine layer and all of that fog and low cloud cover. let's simulate that as we head through tonight into early tomorrow morning. and we're going to be seeing it spreading out across the bay and into the inland valleys. deeper marine layer is more able to overcome the terrain obstacles around the bay. so even east of the oakland hills, you're going to have gray skies to start the day if you're up early enough. but it doesn't take long for that fog to start to retreat out of the tri valley and east of the oakland hills and out of the santa clara valley as well. it will take a little longer for the north bay, and that's going to have an impact on how much temperatures warm up. or more accurately, don't warm up. here's the forecast. highs for tomorrow for the north bay, mostly in the 60s. just the warmest spots getting up to around or just above 70 degrees around healdsburg because the fog hangs on a little bit longer, you're not going to shake the fog along the coast. your temperatures only hit the mid to upper 50s, barely above 60 in san francisco. but where the sun does emerge a little faster, temperatures at least get up close to normal a couple degrees below average east of
11:22 pm
the oakland hills in the low to mid 70s. a couple degrees above average, but still close to where we're supposed to be in the santa clara valley. getting up into the mid to upper 70s by tomorrow afternoon. again, tomorrow is the coolest day we're going to see out of the next several, but there's going to be cooler air on the way next week along with that chance of showers. it's going to be heading our way. quick check of futurecast and our long range forecast models have essentially switched places. the forecast model was dry yesterday, and now it's showing the better chance of rain by monday, continuing monday night into tuesday. while the european model, which did have a good chance of showers, has now backed significantly away from that scenario. so it's still something that could go either way. we'll keep you updated as we head through the next seven days. the way we're phrasing it is that showers are possible, not guaranteed, just something we'll watch by monday into monday night of next week. coastal temperatures don't change a lot. a mix of 50s and on the warmest days, especially friday and saturday, a little farther into the 60s. and those days are when temperatures bayside manage to get a little bit farther up into the 70s, including 75 degrees on friday, but then a drop by early next
11:23 pm
week. and the biggest roller coaster ride is for inland parts of the bay area after near normal temperatures. tomorrow we climb on thursday, we really spike friday and then down the other side. >>alright, straight ahead in sports nine innings not enough for the giants, not even ten. and the warriors may have taken care of business in minnesota. but as steph curry's expense injury update coming up.

fourth quarter deep ball made it a 20 point game. kuminga had seven points, 13 minutes, and minnesota star anthony edwards one point in the first half, 22 in the second that lay in cut the lead to ten. two and a half to go heeled again from deep. pushed the lead to 12. he'll let golden state with 24. he had five threes and the warriors won game one on the road 9988. now dub nation will keep their fingers crossed for good news after curry's mri on wednesday. >>he's obviously crushed. but, you know, the guys picked him up and played a great game. we're definitely, game planning for him to to not not be available on thursday, but we don't know yet. but with a hamstring, it's hard to imagine that he would play thursday. i think we all want 30 back that that is for sure. but we want him to do his best for himself, best for our group, in

the giants scored nine in the inning. most runs they've scored in one extra inning in franchise history and won the game 14 to 5. so, sarah, just when you think you've seen it all stuff happens. >>i know on a random day, you know, what day is it? it's tuesday. >>yeah, well. >>a random tuesday. all right. >>the post game meal tasted great. >>yes, indeed. all right. thank you. would you travel far and wide to find the love of your life? why? one man is heading to every state in search of the perfect date. >>for joe. we have four things in here.
