probably seen them or heard them. tonight, warnings from wildlife officials after a few encounters were a little too close for comfort. then the warm up is on the way. how? businesses that depend on people being outside are trying to make sure everyone stays safe. plus, a high school track championship here in california getting attention from around the country, the politics taking center stage before anyone competing. and they say every dog has his day. >>i really don't think any other person driving a car would have would have stopped. >>this one definitely had his the driver, or lack thereof, that's being credited with saving his life.
1:39 am
>>hello, i'm sara donchey. we start tonight in golden gate park, where dog walkers are facing one of the more terrifying things in nature in the city. maybe a mother protecting her babies. coyote pupping season is now fully underway, and experts are warning people to avoid run ins if they can. our andrea nakano talked to dog walkers who have already made it out of some pretty close calls. >>howling coyotes at golden gate park near lindley meadows, a popular spot where dog owners walk and play with their pups. it's not far from where brandon hartstein and his dog odin encountered a pack of coyotes about a year ago. >>we were walking on a trail that's not too popular. and all of a sudden three coyotes just appeared and then started kind of stalking us. >>similar stories of coyote encounters are surfacing this year. lauren roach watched her dog get chased by coyotes.
1:40 am
>>she was running along in the grassy area, and i was running on the, you know, path that doesn't have cars. and there was two coyotes that started chasing after her. and then i look over, i'm like, wow, they're going so fast. and it was two coyotes chasing after her. luckily, she was fast enough to outrun them. and then i called her back over and they ended up kind of like, you know, going away. >>signs like these are posted in golden gate park to warn people about these potential run ins with coyotes. experts say coyotes are just protective during pupping season and are not displaying unprovoked aggression. they say the best thing to do is to shorten the leash and walk in the other direction. something hartstein tried to do. >>we kept on walking away. i was making loud sounds, trying to scare them off. and eventually we just started running. and luckily a biker came by and i flagged him down, and then he helped chase them off. >>some dog owners have noticed coyotes getting bolder and becoming used to humans in
1:41 am
their territory. they say with these canines all over the bay area, the key is to limit conflicts and coexist with each other. >>i just try and kind of, you know, adjust my way of living because they're it's part of where they live and stuff. i wouldn't want to have to adjust for someone coming into my home. >>over to fairfield. now the search is on. after a second mountain lion sighting was reported this week. officials are working to track down the big cat, but they're still not sure if it's one of them or multiple on the prowl. the department of fish and wildlife says if things escalate, if they're spotted near schools, they'll be ready to step in. >>i think the biggest thing that people can do is keep their pets inside. don't go out walking your dog or your pet during early mornings. walk in groups. just know that dusk and dawn are the times that mountain lions and predators are most active. >>they say if you come toe to toe with one of these cats, the best thing to do is not to run.
1:42 am
fight your instincts. instead, you should wave your arms and throw something at it if you can. if you are planning to be out and about in the bay area this weekend, hopefully not dealing with any wildlife encounters, get ready to deal with intense heat instead. a lot of the bay area is going to be under a heat advisory. and over in the east bay, some cities are going to see triple digits. contra costa county is one of the places that could be very hot. the owner of sweet lou's, cherry, says he's worried his customers might not be ready for it. >>it does happen on occasion. it did happen last year, and basically we just try to keep people in the shade and put towels around them and have them basically cool down. there is plenty of shade. that's the beautiful thing, right? >>yeah. so i think, you know, the idea is you don't want to get heat exhaustion. yeah. it's easy to forget when we have sort of like longer cool periods what it's like when it gets. >>hot like this. >>but you'll be reminded pretty >>quickly. and that's the thing about this one tomorrow is it is going to come on really fast. we're
1:43 am
going to take a huge like ten degree jump tomorrow, and a lot of people will get caught off guard by this. so let me get you ready for friday. we have to talk about saturday as well. map still looks just as intense for tomorrow as it has all along. in other words, this forecast is persistently not budging. there's a high degree of confidence now in these numbers, and i want to show you how this will play out for your part of the bay. the first place we're going to begin i'm going to get out of the way. let's check out the north bay. we're going to break this up into chapters. north bay, one of the parts of the bay that typically see some of the higher numbers. that's a 99 for healdsburg back there behind santa rosa. but you should be in the mid 90s in santa rosa. let's keep going here. we're going to get over towards the east bay now, notably the part of the bay that usually sees the highest numbers, fairfield at 99. now antioch you're going to go to 100 will be at 98 in livermore. let's keep the tour going. let's get down into the south bay. pick out your numbers there. and when we look at the south bay numbers, we're seeing temperatures here that are climbing well into the 90s once again, especially that 95 in los gatos. and it gets so much better as we work our way
1:44 am
up the peninsula and the temperatures start to look a lot better. everybody's got a heat advisory except for the locations right here. i'm going to remove those numbers and you can take a look at the color code here. san francisco, oakland, san leandro. you guys are not included in the heat advisory tomorrow for those numbers. anybody in the yellow is okay. everybody else on here has to go easy on themselves tomorrow and saturday. really good news for sunday. i'll show you what that looks like in the full forecast in just a bit for now. sarah, back >>to. you darren. thanks so much. we look forward to that for now. a deadly end to a police chase over in east oakland. police say a suspect in a stolen car slammed into a couple that was walking along a sidewalk, and a man was killed as a result. this happened at the corner of east 21st street and 12th avenue last night. the couple was just out for an evening walk when that car spun out of control and hit them. now, home surveillance video shows the moment that the couple tried to dodge the car. it skids through the intersection and hit a hydrant. hit a tree and then it hit that couple. oakland police say chp officers were briefly
1:45 am
pursuing the car, but they ended the chase before the crash. still, critics of car chases think that policy changes are not going in the right direction. >>it's not like one car stops and somebody jumps out and says, oh, i give up, thanks for chasing me. there's a crash one way or another. is it into a building? is it into other cars, or is it has frequently is into people. >>so oakland police are seeking approval from the police commission to loosen their rules regarding police chases. right now, the rules require officers to end a chase if speeds reach 50mph, unless a commander approves it to continue. chp does not operate under that oakland chase policy. they have their own oakland bans pursuits unless the crimes were violent or involved. a gun. chp has to consider several factors, like traffic conditions, the severity of the crime, and potential public safety risk. the city of clovis, near fresno, will host this weekend's state track and field championships. it is also
1:46 am
playing host to a political battle as a trans athlete gets ready to compete. we've been following this story as abby hernandez is set to take part in three women's events. it's caught the attention of president trump and his supporters as he threatened to cut federal funding to california over the issue. steve large shares the reaction from local leaders in clovis today. >>political scrutiny at the starting line of the state track and field championships. >>there is a distraction that hangs like a cloud over this weekend's event. >>diane pierce is mayor pro tem of clovis, where this year's state finals are being held. she led this press conference condemning trans athletes competing in female sports. remove biological boys from girls sports and restore the integrity of our girls divisions. it seems like these groups are not going to stop. jorge ramos is a spokesperson for equality california, the largest lgbtq plus advocacy

group in this state. because this is a part of a bigger issue. this is not just about trans kids in sports. this is about an attack against the transgender community. the political battle heated up after this president trump truth social post called out the state track meet this week, reading california under the leadership of radical left democrat gavin newsom, continues to illegally allow men to play in women's sports. although the president did not name a particular student athlete, junior abby hernandez qualified for the state finals, prompting the california governing body of high school sports to create a pilot program allowing her to compete without displacing any biological female student athletes. this change in championship weekend by cif is an open admission that something wrong is going on. abby hernandez's mother issued this statement to the la times. my child is a transgender student athlete, a hardworking, disciplined and passionate young person who just wants to play sports, continue to build friendships and grow into their
1:48 am
fullest potential. like any other child. >>we should be focused on celebrating their hard work and accomplishments. >>this year's state track and field championships. the scores will be watched closely by those also tracking political points. >>cif announced wednesday that hernandez, who is transgender, will be allowed to compete. they say if hernandez makes it to the finals, a biological female athlete who would have earned the next qualifying mark will also advance. if hernandez medals, a duplicate medal will be given to the next closest female athlete in competition. they say one dog is getting some extra treats tonight after a very scary moment involving a waymo. family and it was all caught on camera. and the scripps

national spelling bee has a new champion tonight, but it's a bay area student that helped make the whole thing happen. plus, if you're in the market for a new bar of soap and you want to have a little something extra. one celeb might have the thing for you. >>it's the hands. everything was all
1:50 am
as long as probably forever, there's only been one “frosty.” cause what would we even do? add a bunch of new swirls and mix-ins like oreo cookies or pop-tarts pieces? that's kind of genius actually. for a fresh way to frosty gotta be wendy's.
1:51 am
>>so this next story is a dog
1:52 am
owner's nightmare. this black lab named trevor got out and ran right into the street. luckily, the car that almost hit him sent the dog in time. laurie perez has the details. >>near death for a dog caught on camera. i heard a noise of someone screaming for their dog. professional photographer christian shenouda has taken thousands of dog pictures that will make you smile. but it's this 15 second video captured by his front door ring camera that could have you jumping for joy. listen to his play by play of what it shows as trevor, an eight year old lab mix, got loose from a neighbor's yard on memorial day. the dog actually came out of the house next door and went running down across the street into that yard, across the street. and then, the neighbors, my neighbor's friend called the dog back. and that's when the waymo came from that side and stopped just in time. it was amazing. he says the self-driving car stopped on a dime, and trevor sprinted away unscathed.
1:53 am
stunning. shenouda, who was watching his security camera from inside. came to a immediate stop. you know, it was such a relief. and silencing trevor's family and friends who were feet away and screaming for him to get away from the busy santa monica street, where driverless cars are a frequent part of the traffic flow. andrew yelled his name. trevor and i went running down the stairs. i saw him cross the street and he saw a car coming. saw him jump right in front of the car and it was amazing that the car stopped. trevor seemed oblivious to the close encounter with the automated auto, but his humans were anything but. i really don't think any other person driving a car would have would have stopped because he was. so he's so short and he jumped right out in front of the car. it was really amazing. i saw the whole thing and i can't believe he didn't get hit. waymo sent us some info and a video about how the driverless car reacts. they say it has three sensor types to give it a
1:54 am
3d picture of the car's surroundings. then more than 20 million miles of real world driving in 20 billion miles in simulation, combined with ai to predict how other drivers might respond. he has resting. sad face. it's part of his charm. we rescued him when he was about a year old. yeah, he would have been devastated if something happened to him. >>glad that little guy is okay. all right. the scripps national spelling bee crowned a whole new champion. nine finalists spelled their hearts out with 13 year old faizan zaki from texas winning the competition. and the words they spelled or attempted to are all coordinated by a uc berkeley grad student. now, he couldn't tell us exactly how he helped compile the list of words. that is a highly secretive process. but the man, frank cahill, was able to sit down with us and explain that his passion for the spelling bee comes from years and years of competing in local and state competitions himself. he even made it to the national spelling bee finals back in 2012.
1:55 am
>>i will never forget the word that i missed in the finals of the national spelling bee. it was horrible. it's a word from english, so not a very helpful etymology. it means a tadpole, so it's a pretty cute word. and i spelled it p o r w i g g e. but actually in middle english we only had one g. >>yeah. i mean, doesn't everyone know that darren? actually, no. frank says even though he didn't win back in 2012, he still wanted to be a part of the magic. so he started volunteering to help come up with the competition words. this year he is the national coordinator, and he tells us he's been working on it for more than a year. >>first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at kia. kia movement that inspires. >>all right so we've got to get ready for this. you didn't call it a heat wave. you called it a heat spike because it doesn't meet the qualifications >>right. it's >>just. >>enough right. it's not long enough. and it's going to come on really fast and then be gone almost as fast as it came in. so think of it that way. by
1:56 am
sunday, this is like in the rear view mirror in a big way. you're going to love the second half of the weekend, but we need to focus first on what tomorrow and saturday are going to do. i've been showing you the intensity of the temperatures across california. keep pointing out how that smoky white is. temperatures get into 100 110. but i want to contrast that with something. there is a little bit of help now when you use the virtual map to see that. so instead of looking at the forecast highs for tomorrow, this is the last two hours of high resolution satellite imagery. here are the city lights. there's the bay and that is the marine layer in the worst heat waves or heat spikes you don't get marine layer off the coast. it gets completely squelched. and there's a little more to this because as we look at tomorrow, some of that's going to get into the bay. tomorrow morning, you're going to wake up if you're in the bay and watch what happens. we're going to use the high resolution futurecast, which has a pretty good bead on clouds filling in through part of napa tomorrow morning and even here through the south bay. this is 8 a.m. if you like seeing low, patchy clouds get up early because by
1:57 am
9 or 10 that is all gone. it's going to evaporate because high pressure building in is going to be able to totally deteriorate that. but the fact that it's there at all is a sign. look what happens when we put that color contour on here again for the bay. now that we do close up. and we were looking at this at the top of the newscast, there's still a decent amount of yellow in here. it's only going to be in the mid 70s in san francisco tomorrow. now that is a warm day in the city, but nowhere near records it can, and recently has gotten way hotter than that in san francisco, in fact, the last october. so if you take a look at this little break here, the areas here are not in the heat advisory, but everybody else you are. so if you're inland at all, if you can't see a body of water at all, or if you're above 1000ft, most of us aren't. but even if you can see a body of water and you're above 1000ft, you're in the heat advisory because you're going to feel this. so i'll get out of the way. i don't want to block any more of these numbers. let me get over here up towards the lick observatory. and now you can pick out your part of the bay. now let's do a comparison.
1:58 am
friday and saturday are almost identical to this. let's get the wide view on the map. we're going to take about a friday's numbers. and what we're going to do is we're just going to take a look at the color contour. and i'm going to switch it. here's what sunday is going to look like. sunday is going to be much better because by the time by the time we get there sunday, the colors are way more agreeable. look how much farther the yellows gotten now. and if i put the numbers on just for sunday again, pick out your part of the bay 70 out here. there's huge improvement. this is almost getting us back down to average for this time of year. so this is a very short lived, intense jump in numbers. thankfully, that doesn't stick around for too long and there is significant improvement by sunday. i guess the real takeaway on that is you're making your plans for you. got something you want to do outdoors this weekend? boy, it makes way more sense to start looking at sunday. and if you do have to be outdoors on saturday and friday, keep in mind that heat advisory and some of the heat risk map that we've been messaging over the past few days, if you start to feel any mild symptoms lightheadedness, dizziness,
1:59 am
maybe dehydration, address it right away. during these kinds of spikes of heat, especially these early ones, you don't want to mess with them because it's the first ones, even if they're not as intense as the ones we're going to get, like in august. it's these first spikes in heat that usually get people the most, because we haven't really acclimated yet, and we're not taking them as seriously. so friday and saturday take it kind of seriously and then you get a big payoff on sunday. all right, sarah, back to you. >>okay. we are still feeling the high from all of the fun we had at carnival last weekend. it was amazing. san francisco's mission district was full of celebrations of latin, caribbean, caribbean and african traditions and we brought you the festival, the largest multicultural festival on the west coast in its entirety. but if you missed it, you can catch an encore encore presentation this saturday night from 8 to 10 on pix plus 44 cable 12. we have more highlights on kpix.com. >>speaking of highlights,

>>all right, so you're a glass half full guy. the valkyries, they definitely improved. >>it was almost violet rain. violet rain. >>hey. that's the remix. >>yeah, it would have been great, but. well, you know, we'll just have to kind of take whatever positives we can from tonight's game against the defending champs, the valkyries, tonight against the new york liberty, the wnba champs. but i'll tell you what you asked them. the only stat that mattered was the final score. hey, jackie chan has got a movie out. another karate kid made time with coach nick bosa pregame. so let's go to the third quarter tied at 48. new york sabrina ionescu played with vengeance, miramonte high school product. knocked down six threes, scored 24. a little over three minutes left. golden state just down one and janelle
2:04 am
salon timely three. valkyries had a 7573 lead. salon 18 points, 13 rebounds, under two minutes, one point. liberty lead. julie van loo go ahead bucket with the liberty, retook the lead at the free throw line and with 30s left, natasha cloud right through the valkyrie defense. great effort. valkyries almost took down the best team in the league. key word almost new york won it both games this week. in fact tonight, 8277 and matt lively was there. >>the golden state valkyries took tuesday night's 28 point loss personally, and they came out in game two and gave the new york liberty all they could handle. but ultimately, the valkyries came up just short 8277. i gave the girls a ton of credit on just how they responded. right. we just it was a 30 point loss two days ago. and then again, attention to detail. they followed the game plan pretty much to a tee. >>the elks led with just a minute and 35 left in this game, but
2:05 am
ultimately errors in the last minute gave the liberty the advantage as breanna stewart scored 27 and sabrina ionescu had 24 with six three pointers. but positive signs as janelle salon had her first career double double and mo billings return to action with ten points and seven rebounds. >>we're tough. we're fighters. we knew that the last time we played new york a couple days ago that that wasn't our best showing, so i'm proud of our fight. i feel like new york felt us tonight, and there's a lot to grow and build off of from this game. are you able to take any consolation your first career double? double? i mean, it doesn't matter if it's a loss. honestly, i'm not going to lie to you. it's just tough again tonight. of course it's better. i mean, it's the game was way better than the other one, but it's still tough. i want them to feel the pain. i told them, hey, let's we're going to have some short term pain for long term results. so this is definitely painful. they were in pain on tuesday so hopefully they feel it. but understand we took so many positives from
2:06 am
this game and then moving forward. now we got to get ready for minnesota. the valkyries now fall to two and three on the season. but the good news they return home to chase center on sunday as they face off against the minnesota lynx in the first wnba commissioner's cup game. >>all right, matt spike lee, not far from where you were dressed for the knicks hosting pacers game five. all next tonight. up 14 in the third. jalen brunson hit from deep. plus the foul. brunson score 32. knicks had to win. it was an elimination game. under three minutes left karl-anthony towns drove and scored. towns added 24 and new york avoided elimination. won it 111 to 94, cutting the pacers eastern series lead to three games to two. game six is saturday in indiana hockey night. hello? former sharks coach pete deboer runs the dallas stars. unfortunately for him, edmonton was in the way. connor mcdavid streaking scoring. oilers won the western conference six three final. tonight won the
2:07 am
series four games to one, so the stanley cup final stage is set. it's a rematch edmonton against the reigning champ florida panthers for the second straight year. and sarah, aren't you amazed at how these guys can get it done on razor sharp skates? start stop on a dime. breakneck speed skating backwards. unbelievable. and they're tough guys too, >>right? they fight. >>yeah. >>like immediately. >>they fight on sky >>cam. >>exactly. >>all right, brian, thank you so much. just when you think you've seen it or smelled it all, one celebrity is getting ready to sell something brand new and bubbly. >>to believe. >>so >>blasted in la their first couple >>of games >>of the playoffs because of the game. watch how quickly mcdavid turns and he can go. now hintz can really go too. but mcdavid's speed freezes. casey desmith.
