>>i'm anne makovec in for ryan in any moment now. a federal judge in san francisco is expected to rule on california's lawsuit challenging the trump administration's deployment of federal troops in response to the protests against ice. so we're going to bring you that decision as soon as it comes down this evening. we are also meantime watching the fallout from a shocking moment in los angeles today where homeland security secretary kristi noem was holding a news conference to discuss the protest. federal agents physically removed california senator alex padilla from that event and handcuffed him. juliette goodrich joins us now with that video of how it all went down and the reaction. >>yeah, coming swift and loudly today. this all happening about five minutes into a press conference, homeland security secretary kristi noem was having in los angeles. and that is when senator padilla interrupted her trying to ask a question. >>to the rioters and to the politicians in los angeles. a half a dozen, i think,
5:02 pm
criminals that should rotating on your. on the ground, hands behind your back, hands behind your back. if you let me get on my hands. go ahead. put him behind my back. all right. cool. >>it was noem's security detail that stepped in to remove the senator. she kept speaking as he was being shoved out of the room. his office released the video of him being taken to the ground and put in handcuffs. padilla says he was in the building for a meeting and decided to come and listen to noem's speech after being released, he called out the trump administration. >>if this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they're doing throughout california and throughout the country. >>meantime, homeland security secretary kristi noem says she did not know it was senator padilla at the time. she said that if he had questions, he should have reached out beforehand. >>his approach, you know, was something that i don't think
5:03 pm
was appropriate at all. i'll let the law enforcement speak to how this was situation was handled. but i will say that it's, people need to identify themselves before they start lunging at people that during press conferences. >>a cbs news reporter, carter evans, was in the briefing room at the time, and he says everyone was caught off guard. >>it was unclear to most people who he was. it took a few seconds to register. who is this? is this a member of the media? is this a member of the public? a protester who got inside? turns out it was a us senator. >>secretary noem said she and padilla exchanged numbers after he was let go. a spokesperson for homeland security says the secret service thought padilla might be an attacker, and that officers acted appropriately. governor newsom tweeted out this message alongside a picture of senator padilla on the ground, saying, quote, if they can handcuff a u.s. senator for asking a question, imagine what they will do to you. padilla was not arrested. and >>thank you, juliette. also,

right now, thousands of national guard troops are on the streets of los angeles as anti ice protests continue at any minute. now, a federal judge in san francisco is expected to rule on a lawsuit about whether or not they're authorized to be there over the objection of state and city leaders. this is the case of california challenging the trump administration's use of federal troops. our kenny choi is live outside the courthouse right now, kenny. state leaders basically saying that the president has illegally overstepped his authority here. >>yeah. those arguments were heard in the federal courtroom just behind me about 130 this afternoon. the crux of the argument is when can the national guard, in this case the california national guard, be sent to los angeles? the president, of course, ordered that last week. and also at issue, when the u.s. marines can be sent into a us city.
5:05 pm
>>the president has so far ordered 4000 national guard members and 700 u.s. marine troops to los angeles to restore order on the streets. federal judge charles breyer heard arguments from both sides for about an hour. newsom and attorneys have characterized the federal military intervention as unnecessary and an abuse of power. roy little is a constitutional law professor at uc law, san >>francisco. one strong argument is that the orders did not go through the governor's office, and the statute requires that the orders go through the governor's office. at the very least, the president should have called up the governor's office and said, hey, i'm going to do this. and they didn't do that. they they they just simply announced they were going to do >>it. attorneys for trump argued the president may call into federal service members and units of the national guard of any state in such numbers as he considers necessary to repel an invasion, suppress the rebellion, or execute those laws. >>their strongest argument is if you look at the pictures of what happened, you know, saturday and sunday, things seem to be
5:06 pm
out of control. and that's when we send in the national guard. >>at one point during the hearing in front of a packed courthouse, breyer saying this country was founded in response to a monarch and the constitution is a document of limitations. i'm trying to figure out where the lines are drawn. >>so we're still waiting on the judge's ruling. as we mentioned at the top of the hour, newsom's team also are expected to speak sometime today if that ruling does come down. now, it appears that judge charles breyer will likely rule soon on the national guard status, while reserving further judgment on the issue of whether u.s. marines can be sent in to a u.s. city. he told the courtroom that he hopes to have a decision and make a decision and ruling sometime today. >>it's pretty amazing this is happening at the same time as the national guard is already standing on the streets of l.a. for the evening. what is it like there, though, in san francisco at the federal courthouse? i'm not seeing any protesters or anything crazy.
5:07 pm
>>yeah. no protesters this afternoon. it's essentially the courtroom was packed with with media, members of the media. and of course, as you could imagine, just a number of attorneys, both representing the trump administration, the department of justice. and then on the other side, you had a team of lawyers from the attorney general's office, from rob bonta's office, representing the state of california. but again, right now at this hour, we are waiting on that ruling. and that ruling has so many implications on the national guard. under what circumstances the president can send the national guard to a city like los angeles to essentially quell the violence and get a hold of the streets once again? >>yeah. and questions over whether that ruling would take effect immediately. so lots to figure out when that comes down. thank you so much, candy. and of course we will keep you posted as soon as we hear about a ruling. meantime, today, defense secretary pete hegseth
5:08 pm
squared off with bay area congressman ro khanna as he tried to justify sending the marines into los angeles. >>can you assure the american people of two things you will respect any supreme court decision on this matter about whether the marines are constitutional, and you will respect the district courts when they rule before the supreme court rules. what i can say is we should not have local judges determining foreign policy or national security policy for the country. so you're not willing to say you would respect those decisions. what i'm saying is local district judges shouldn't make foreign policy for the united states. gentleman's time has >>expired. that exchange coming today at a hearing on the defense department's budget for 2026. >>i'm devin fehely. following several rallies today in the bay area in support of the immigrant community, san francisco's mayor, daniel lurie, joined faith leaders on the steps of city hall. he criticized the president's crackdown on immigration and reaffirmed that the city stands with immigrants, civil rights activists, and president of san francisco's naacp branch amos brown gave a rousing speech.
5:09 pm
>>it's time for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work. thank god san francisco knows how to lead the way, how to do the right thing. thank god. san francisco knows that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. >>just this week, four people were detained by ice at the immigration court on montgomery street. protesters forced the court to shut down for the day. now, meantime, the unitarian universalist church on franklin street held a vigil for community members who died in ice detention. >>we gather this morning, bound this afternoon, bound by this commitment and in this day of witness to the losses of lives that have taken place in our state, in detention camps and. >>in the first hundred days of president trump's second term,
5:10 pm
at least nine people have died in ice custody. and across the bay in oakland, elected officials and immigrant advocates voiced their support for anti-fascist protesters and condemned the trump administration's tactics. >>deploying the military against our own citizens. it's a sign of authoritarianism as a democratic society. it's our obligation to peacefully protest and to stand up for our communities. >>state senator aragon also says the state senate plans to pass its budget tomorrow, allocating $110 million to fund legal defense and counseling for people facing deportation. and >>thank you, devin. we are learning new details about that fiery plane crash in india. 241 people were on board and killed when a flight headed for london crashed in a residential neighborhood shortly after takeoff. incredibly, one passenger who was thrown from the plane did survive. that plane went down in a city
5:11 pm
called ahmedabad in west india. cbs news correspondent chris livesay has the latest and a warning some of the video is disturbing. >>the final moments of air india 171 bound for london, were captured on video minutes after takeoff from ahmedabad, india. it quickly lost altitude and exploded in a fireball. >>it was leaving with a full capacity of fuel, so we're looking at about 130 tons of fuel that were on the aircraft that caused a massive explosion, and as a result, the damage on the scene will be intense, >>incredibly. a man apparently survived the crash. a doctor at a nearby hospital told the associated press he treated the passenger, saying he was disoriented and had multiple injuries, but appears to be out of danger. the plane's tail ended up sticking out of a building that was part of a medical college in the northwestern indian city, firefighters doused the smoking wreckage with water. the plane heading here to gatwick airport
5:12 pm
was carrying mostly indian nationals. air india says there were also more than 50 britons on board, as well as canadian and portuguese citizens. >>it was a horrific crash. it looks like most are gone. >>the boeing 787 eight went down after a mayday call from the plane. it's the first crash of a 787 dreamliner, according to an aviation database. >>this is a difficult day for all of us at air india, and our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones. >>boeing's president and ceo expressed condolences to victims families and pledged the company's support in the investigation. a team from the national transportation safety board is heading to india to assist that effort. >>and a medical association says at least five medical students inside the building were killed and 50 others injured. search still underway for others who might be trapped. coming up next, we are going to meet the people pushing back against a plan
5:13 pm
that could result in more police chases following the death of a beloved teacher in oakland. providing fresh food to the community and a sense of purpose to its workers. i feel lost. we're going to talk to them about their work and why they say it is now in jeopardy. plus, professional cricket has arrived in the bay area. got a little background on one of the world's most popular sports. >>and coming up in the forecast, i hope you've been enjoying this first week and a half of june, which has been pretty uneventful. about to go the first two weeks of the month without having to deal with any heat, but i'm starting to see some of it now showing up in the forecast. i finally got 90 degree days in this seven day forecast coming back for inland parts
5:16 pm
protesters gathered outside of oakland city hall today demanding chp officers abide by the city's pursuit policies. that comes after an oakland teacher was hit and killed last month by a driver who, moments earlier, had been being chased by chp officers. >>i'm hurt at this situation, but i'm also very angry. and i'm angry because i'm just tired of our people just dying at the hands of the system. and this wasn't no accident. highway patrol decided that it was a good idea to be doing a high speed chase through east oakland. this man's >>life. chp officers initiated the chase after a license plate reader alerted them to a vehicle wanted for felony evasion. officers say the driver, 19 year old eric hernandez garcia, took off. the chp says officers backed off
5:17 pm
before that fatal crash happened. under oakland's policy, pursuits can only be initiated over a violent crime or if they believe the suspect has a firearm. >>you don't get. to be here and do what you want to do. we have rules in the city and you need to follow them. we want full accountability from the california highway patrol. somebody should say something. somebody should say they're sorry. >>the family of the victim you see there, doctor marvin boomer says they plan to sue the chp and the city for his death. meantime, hernandez garcia faces multiple felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter. a less than an hour from now on. a much more pleasant note. major league cricket makes its debut in the bay area, the league opening its season with a week of games at the oakland coliseum. a veronica macias has more. >>it's a popular sport around the world. there's a craze for cricket with something like 2.5 billion followers, and that craze is catching on here in the bay area, here at the coliseum. let's go ahead and show you what a match will look
5:18 pm
like. it's a lot like baseball, but there's a lot more detail. and major league cricket is investing millions of dollars here at the coliseum. it's the first time ever in history that this sport of cricket comes to the bay. the newest team is the san francisco unicorns. all six league teams, including the unicorns, will play here at the coliseum between today and sunday. city leaders say the cricket craze is expected to bring fans in from all around the world. plus, the league's ceo says that he wants to welcome as many fans to the sport as possible ahead of the 2028 olympics. >>now we're beginning to bring that global energy and that global focus to oakland in a way that has never been done before. this isn't only about a game, it's about putting oakland on the map in a new way. i think everyone now knows that cricket is going to be reentered into the olympic games in los angeles in 2028, and everything that we're going to be doing at major league
5:19 pm
cricket is to capitalize on that unique opportunity and really make an impact. >>so the sport does require you to know the vocabulary, and the sport is very english. so let's break it down for you a little. they use the words like blob and duck. those describe a score of zero players getting nothing done. other things to know there are bowlers there, the players who throw the ball like a pitcher. in baseball, a wicket is the three stumps with the two bails at the top, at the two bases, and a batsman defends that area. my favorite so far, a dobley which is a delivery easy to hit but difficult to score from. so you can say that batsman wasn't expecting that. dibbly dobley he completely missed it or the ball went into the cow's corner, meaning an area where the ball hardly ever goes to. tickets are as low as $15 and you can catch those matches between today and sunday. >>all right, said 90 degrees a
5:20 pm
moment ago. so i'm just going to start off with that. you know, we haven't done any real heat here since the last day of may. it's easy to forget this as you go through the summer. may 31st, we were doing 100 degrees for inland valleys. on june 1st that dropped into the 70s and that we never had to go back. and while you probably have already seen the first 90 degree day on here, it's towards the end. take a look back here towards wednesday. by the time we get there, we are already just a little over halfway through the month of june. think about that for a second. we will have gone the first half of what is like the first month of summer, really. we start some meteorological summer. it's a technical thing actually, and that starts on june 1st. so we've kind of gotten off real easy. and even at that, we're talking about 90 and we're not staying there long either. so we'll have a bit of a jump here. you can see it's really kind of begins on tuesday. and then wednesday we top out and then the trend wants to bring us back down again. we may not be stuck there that long. so this is
5:21 pm
turning out to be a pretty nice june around here. we'll come back to this again in a second. i just wanted you to see that as the headline. i think what we need to do is get you ready for tomorrow. and of course, there is a weekend happening before we have to start thinking about any of that heat. so let's get into the forecast from that standpoint. this is right now high resolution satellite. a little bit of the marine layer is hanging out here. we've been watching the time lapse today from ... hill. that's the top of the mark hopkins hotel. watch the clouds disappear once we get to like the early afternoon. it has been a nice run of sunshine. finally for the city. got two days. i think you're going to do that again tomorrow in the city. i think you will get sun by late morning. in fact, let me show you why i would say that. let's come back down and take a look at the virtual map. and i'm going to overlay the live satellite with how the fog is going to progress onshore over the course of tonight. a couple of things about this. it's not going to be terribly widespread tomorrow morning when we wake up. we're definitely going to see the fog stream in through the heart of the bay, definitely down the east bay
5:22 pm
shore. but i think tomorrow morning, if you get much in the way of clouds to start your day in san jose, it won't be a lot. so you're going to get a head start. more sunshine early, be a little a couple degrees warmer but not noticeably warmer. you just have a sunnier start. same thing in the north bay. you did this today. i don't think you're really going to have a whole lot in the way of the gray up there, but let's see how this is going to melt back now. and when we do that, we'll take the progression from like eight in the morning and we're going to let this melt all the way back to about 2:00. i'm going to get out of the way as we fly up the peninsula, come into san francisco, and let's spin that around. so we get the angle where we can see just how far off the coast that stuff is. it's going to be barely hanging out tomorrow, just like it did today. in other words, clouds will melt back and the entire east half of the city is going to be in the sun. and i think you're really only going to be socked in again tomorrow out at the beaches. it's pretty nice considering where you were for like the three days previous to yesterday, where you really never did get a whole lot of sunshine. let's put some numbers on this. how does it
5:23 pm
feel in light of all that? i'm not going to change much. your daytime highs are almost identical. you maybe you notice that already when we looked at the seven day initially, but let's get everybody on for tomorrow and then i'll give you the seven day for the two kind of primary microclimates. not a whole lot change there. so we'll say goodbye to the highs. let's remove and get straight into the seven day forecast here because we'll look at the inland microclimate again first just for a review on that. and then i'll show you the numbers for the bay which are going to follow a similar pattern. so there's your inland. we've seen it and we get a nice little drop after that. and now let's take a look at the bay. and the story with the bay is you might have to warm up into the mid 70s in general, but that warm up that's coming by early next week will be one of those situations where it's a much more notable warm up inland may not notice a whole lot of difference in the bay. as we get into tuesday and wednesday. we'll have much more on that as we get closer to it. for now. and back to >>you. thank
5:24 pm
you. darren. new drugs may have been a godsend for many americans who struggle with their weight. that includes one bay area woman who fears she will no longer be able to keep up with her care. it's a game changer and without it, it's life threatening. i'm really, really scared. her plea to state lawmakers, plus many southern california homeowners, have been fighting with their insurance companies in the wake of this winter's devastating wildfires. today's announcement that
