in his battle to keep control of national guard troops he deployed to los angeles as another showdown brews with federal agents facing off against the dodgers and protesters. plus -- >> i was just snorkeling, then i went up to breathe. and then something hard bit me and tried to take me away. >> sharing her story. a 9-year-old girl fought off a shark and won. now she's speaking about the harrowing ordeal. good morning. i'm michael george. two weeks, that's the timeline president donald trump gave for deciding whether or not to order u.s. strikes on iran. so while the world waits, the conflict rages on. another iranian missile landed in southern israel overnight causing extensive damage to residential buildings. meanwhile, the israeli military says it struck dozens of iranian targets overnight including rocket launchers and facilities

used in the manufacturing of nuclear weapons. cbs' jarred hill joins us for more. good morning. two weeks, president's favorite deadline. he says he wants to give diplomacy a chance to work. >> reporter: we've seen the president use this two-week timeframe a decent amount, whether for trade negotiations, peace talks with russia, now with iran. this morning, iran's foreign minister said the country is not prepared for talks with anybody while israeli attacks continue. in a last-ditch effort for diplomacy, president trump set a deadline for a decision on whether to strike iran. >> i will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks. that's a quote directly from the president. >> reporter: multiple sources tell cbs news that president trump thinks disabling iran's most secure underground nuclear site fordo is crucial to stopping iran from producing nuclear weapons. >> it is a fact and the united states government maintains this fact that iran has never been closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: multiple sources

also say the fbi has stepped up monitoring of possible iran-backed operatives within the u.s. the fbi and the white house have not commented directly. israel's strikes on iranian nuclear and military sites now stretches into a second week. the death toll on both sides rising as iran retaliates. >> they're targeting civilians because they're a criminal regime. they're the arch terrorists of the world. >> reporter: yesterday israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said a regime climate -- regime change in iran isn't the goal of the operations but added that it could happen as a result. with an eye toward deescalation, today iran's foreign minister is set to meet with some of his european counterparts in geneva. in the meantime, u.s. and other nations are warning their citizens to leave both countries as the conflict persists. the u.s. is not involved in today's talks between iran and european countries, but the british are set to tell the iranians that american proposal is still on the table which would prevent domestic

enrichment of nuclear fuel for what iran claims is a civilian nuclear project. >> all right. thanks for joining us. breaking overnight, a federal appeals court ruled that president trump can keep control of california national guard troops. the president deployed the troops to california following protests over immigration raids. that's despite opposition from governor gavin newsom who vowed to press forward with his challenge. the decision blocks a lower court ruling that the president exceeded his authority. protests and the presence of federal agents shifted to dodger stadium in los angeles. last night's game between the dodgers and the san diego padres went on as planned despite about 100 protesters disrupting traffic before the game in response to reported action by i.c.e. prompting police to show up. [ chants ]

now the drama started earlier in the day when dozens of masked agents arrived in vehicles at a parking lot near one of the gates. the dodgers say i.c.e. agents requested permission to access the parking lot, but the team says they denied the agents' entry and told them to leave. >> los angeles has 1.3 million immigrants. we have whole economies, even the sports industry thrives off the labor of immigrants and latinos. >> my message is if you're going after someone, go after the hard-core criminals. >> the department of homeland security says the agents were from customs and border protection, not i.c.e. and it had nothing to do with the dodgers. and not far away in hollywood, masked i.c.e. agents showed up at a home depot parking lot. they were seen chasing people and taking them into custody. some were street vendors. homeland security says 30 people were detained and say some people attacked federal officers. one man said his brother, a u.s. citizen, was in his delivery truck when agents busted out a window and detained him.

a prolonged heat wave will bring dangerous temperatures to millions of people across the central and eastern u.s. this weekend. high temperatures saturday will reach the middle and upper 90s across much of the midwest, but it's going to feel like 105 with the heat index in chicago and minneapolis. and on sunday the extreme heat spreads east. the heat index will climb to 102 in washington, d.c. forecasters predict the dangerously hot temperatures in the east will last through the middle of next week. the heat follows severe thunderstorms that rolled through much of the east coast. a 15-year-old boy was struck by lightning in new york city's central park yesterday. the good news, the victim reportedly suffered only minor burns. and thousands of customers in washington, d.c., maryland, and virginia much were left without power after winds knocked down trees and power lines.

if you plan to beat the heat at the beach, there have been numerous reports of markets attacks. this week a young girl was bit in hilton head island, south carolina. last week a girl in florida almost lost her hand in a shark attack. she's now sharing her story from the hospital where she's recovering. cbs' dave malkoff reports. 12-year-old female. conscious and breathing. suffering from an injury unknown if sting ray or shark bite. >> reporter: hilton head risk -- rescue quickly responded to a girl injured in the waters off the island on tuesday. she was airlifted with a possible shark bite to her leg. >> she has lost a good amount of blood so far. >> we confirm probably a shark bite. >> you're being very brave. yeah. very strong. >> reporter: body cam video showed 9-year-old leah lendel's mom nadia talking to emergency responders. her daughter nearly lost her hand after being bitten by a

shark near boca grand on the west coast of florida. did you see the shark or just -- >> no. one of the gentlemen said he did. >> reporter: thursday morning leah and her parents described what happened during a conference at tampa general hospital where she's recovering. >> i didn't see anything. i was just snorkeling, then i went up to breathe. and then something hard bit me. and then -- tried to take me away. then i picked up my hand, and it's all in blood. >> i heard like this yell or scream, and i saw like the arm. it was -- it was almost completely gone in that second. there was so much blood in the water right next to me. i mean, in that instant, i knew it's a shark attack. >> reporter: the folks here at hilton head have told us that this 12-year-old child has non-life-threatening injuries. i also talked to chris lowe over at the shark lab at cal state long beach. he says that the sharks don't

underground in tunnels and never saw daylight until his release. concerning incidents involving two separate lawmakers, and an alleged plot against a jewish center. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the san antonio express-news" says a man was arrested in connection with a mass shooting threat at a jewish community center in the city. the fbi says it received a tip someone was planning a mass casualty attack. the threat prompted the jewish facility to abruptly cancel programs and services yesterday including a summer camp and swim practice for children. police stepped up security at jewish institutions across the city. authorities say a suspect was located and taken into custody outside texas. "politico" reports a republican congressman from ohio says he was run off the road by a man with a palestinian flag. >> as i was driving to work some unhinged, deranged man tried to run me off the road to show a

political flag, not to mention death to israel, death to me, that he wanted to kill me and my family. thank god my daughter was not in my vehicle. >> representative max miller, who is jewish and a defender of israel, described what happened yesterday in a post on x. he says he knows who the person is but did not identify him. he added the man will, quote, face justice. and the "commercial appeal" says police arrested a man accused of sneaking into memphis mayor paul young's gated neighborhood and attempting to kidnap him. trenton abston was taken into custody wednesday and reportedly had a rope, stun gun, and duct tape in his car. he went to the home, knocked on the door, and left. his face was recorded on a doorbell camera. a police affidavit he admitted being angry at young, going to his home, and confronting him about crime in the city.
