digits. and resting their case. the prosecution in the sean "diddy" combs sex trafficking trial plan to wrap up their arguments today. what the defense has planned. ♪ ♪ good morning. i'm michael george. it is now midday in the middle east, and just a short time ago president donald trump wrote on social media, the cease-fire between israel and iran is now in effect. but the attacks lingered up to the cease-fire deadline. israelis spent much of the night running to bomb shelters after iran sent waves and waves of missiles into the jewish state, killing four people and injuring many more. the israeli military says it struck several iranian ballistic missile launchers, which it says were going to be part of this morning's attacks on israel. all of this after iran retaliated against an american attack on three iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. cbs's bradley blackburn joins us now with more on this. bradley, good morning.

the israeli prime minister issued his first statement regarding the cease-fire. >> that's right, michael. in the statement israel confirmed it has agreed to president trump's proposal for a bilateral cease-fire, but it also said israel will respond forcefully to any violation, and just a short time ago the idf said it detected another round of iranian missiles it is working to intercept. so this cease-fire may already be put to the test. sirens and smoke trails over israeli skies this morning after a deadly iranian missile barrage. iranian state tv signalled those may be the last of the country's strikes after president donald trump announced a, quote, complete and total cease-fire between the two nations on social media last night. according to the president, iran would cease strikes by around midnight eastern time tuesday while israel would end strikes at noon eastern time. then by around midnight tonight, president trump said, quote, the war will be considered ended. the white house says president trump discussed a deal directly with israeli prime minister

benjamin netanyahu while other top administration officials, including vice president jd vance and secretary of state marco rubio, communicated with iran. iran's foreign minister initially seemed noncommittal to the proposal, posting on x there is no agreement and that a final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later, though he followed that up with claims that his country continued its aggression until the last minute, indicating a possible stop in strikes around 4:00 a.m. local time. monday iran launched counterstrikes targeting a u.s. air base in qatar, retaliation for u.s. strikes on three iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. president trump says iran gave early notice in advance and that there were no deaths or injuries. democrats and some republicans have criticized president trump's use of force over the weekend and proposed resolutions to limit his war powers, but last night the house speaker said those may be a moot point with a cease-fire now tentatively in place. michael.

>> all right. bradley blackburn in new york. thanks. and before the start of the cease-fire israel broadened its attacks, targeting symbols of the iranian regime including the headquarters of the islamic revolutionary guard and the notorious evin prison known for holding political activists. the israeli military says it also struck roads around the fordow nuclear facility to obstruct access to the site. it is the same site the u.s. bombed sunday with 30,000-pound bunker busters. now there's concern iran may have moved its uranium stockpile ahead of the strikes and no one knows to where. cbs's holly williams reports. >> iran's nuclear ambitions have been obliterated. >> reporter: despite the triumphal tone in washington, iran state media claims stockpiles of uranium were transferred away from nuclear sites before the u.s. strikes. we cannot independently verify that. but now iran's responded with

strikes. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: president trump hopes that iran will agree to give up its nuclear program. >> there will be either peace or there will be tragedy for iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. remember, there are many targets left. >> reporter: but the iranian regime, some iranians and iran's rivals here in the middle east may view that concession as a humiliation. >> is it possible that iran will capitulate and completely give up its nuclear program? >> i don't think it can. the iranian regime will prioritize regime survival over everything else. >> reporter: dr. h.a. hillier is an expert in middle eastern security. >> is it possible that iran thinks we need to double down? these attacks show that we absolutely need a nuclear weapon to protect ourselves.

>> first, i think they've already smuggled out as much as they can from the sites, and i fully expect the regime to game out some sort of plan so that they do have nuclear capacity in the future. >> reporter: that's the other possibility, that israel's attack and american airstrikes only increase the motivation for iran's government to produce nuclear weapons. holly williams, cbs news, erbil in northern iraq. turning to the other big story, the stifling and suffocating heat dome gripping the eastern half of the u.s. how hot is it? well, it is hot enough to make roads buckle, like here in missouri where a car went flying. an amtrak train lost power in a tunnel just north of baltimore, trapping hundreds of passengers without air conditioning for more than an hour. and in new jersey several people had to be hospitalized due to the heat at an outdoor high school graduation.

cbs's elijah westbrook has more on this dangerous weather. >> reporter: more than 170 million americans are fighting through this year's first summer swelter. >> my dog doesn't even want to be outside and my dog loves being outside. but it is that walking through a swamp kind of feeling. >> reporter: beaches across the eastern part of the country are crowded with people trying to keep cool as temperatures soar up to 20 degrees above normal for some areas this week. on new york's long island, the olson's graduate granddaughter rylan to the splash park. >> it is a great day to be out. it is going to get hot and we're by the water early and we're going home soon. >> reporter: heat can make chronic health conditions worse. right here in new york city officials are urging residents to find a cooling center if they don't have access to air conditioning. >> heat is not only uncomfortable, but it is the number one cause of weather-related deaths in our city. >> reporter: there's no escape for these roofers in north carolina. shingles growing hotter by the hour. preserve roofing owner matt robertson says he makes sure his

crew stays safe. >> just staying hydrated, making sure they don't try to over extend themselves and take break when you need to. nobody is in a rush to get hurt. >> reporter: it goes both ways. parts of california in the sierra nevada region got a light blanket of snow. the red lodge mountain in montana paused summer activities after four inches dropped over the weekend. elijah westbrook, "cbs news new york". more than 150 million people are under alerts today with extreme heat warning up and down the east coast from north carolina all the way to maine. today's highs will reach 100 degrees or higher from raleigh, north carolina to boston and it will feel even worse with heat indices around 105 to 110. if new york city hits 100 degrees, it will be the first time in 13 years. now to an immigration win for the trump administration at the supreme court. in a 6-3 decision the justices said the administration can

deport migrants to countries other than their homeland. it temporarily blocks a lower court decision that said migrants must be allowed due process. justice sonia sotomayor joined by the other two liberal justices issued a sharp dissent. she wrote the majority was rewarding lawlessness. prosecutors plan to rest their case in the sean "diddy" combs sex trafficking trial. yesterday homeland security sbeshl agent detailed evidence against homes. that includes travel records and hotel invoices connected to the so-called freak-offs at the heart of the case. the defense indicated it will wrap its case without calling any witnesses, signaling that combs will not testify in his own defense. he's pleaded not guilty. closing arguments could come as early as thursday. well, coming up, a second possible shark attack in less than a week at a popular beach destination. what we know about the victim. and trapped inside a

against certain groups of meningitis? ask their doctor today. rescue crews are desperately trying to save a hiker trapped inside the walls of an active volcano in indonesia. a 26-year-old brazilian tourist slipped and fell down a cliff on saturday, plunging 1,000 feet inside the volcano. now, somehow she survived the fall, but severe weather and extreme terrain have hindered rescue efforts. the team has been able to supply her with food and water. well, second possible shark attack at hilton head island and damages in a january 6th case. those are some of the headlines we are following on the morning newsstand. "politico" reports a man has been ordered to pay $500,000 for assaulting a police officer who killed himself after the capitol riot. erin smith sued david walls-kaufman for allegedly assaulting her husband, metropolitan police officer

jeffrey smith, inside the capitol on january 6th, 2021. smith claims walls-kaufman struck her husband in the head, giving him a concussion and causing psychological and physical trauma that led to his suicide. walls-kaufman has denied assaulting smith and called the outcome of the trial absolutely ridiculous. the "island packet" says hilton head officials are reporting a likely second shark bite in less than a week. authorities at the popular beach destination in south carolina responded to a medical emergency at coligny beach sunday. they say the victim suffered lacerations to the leg consistent with a shark bite. it comes just days after a 12-year-old girl suffered a leg wound consistent with a shark bite at a hilton head beach. and the daytona beach news journal says a colorado man was killed by lightning while at the beach on his honeymoon. authorities say 29-year-old jake rosencranz was standing in ankle-deep water in new smyrna beach friday when the incident
