they take on the defending champs, the new york liberty, led by the bay area's own sabrina >ionescu. >>good evening. i'm devin fehely. juliet is off tonight. a struggling north bay university is getting a much needed influx of cash. we're talking about $45 million for sonoma state in the form of a one-time infusion from the state budget. the university faced major pushback from students when it decided to slash its entire athletics department and cut several degree programs. those cuts, made to address a $24 million budget deficit caused by declining enrollment and rising costs. katie nielsen has more on what this new lifeline might mean for restoring those cuts, and the fate of the athletic program. >just finished my 22nd year. i started. >this is sonoma state's golf course, valley hunts, a longtime employee who believes

deeply in the mission of the university. >this could be a good putt or a bad putt. we don't >know. which is why he's fighting so hard to save it, along with the athletics program. >if the coaches are involved, you know, and myself and a couple others in particular, we won't fail. we'll win. >he says recruiting student athletes is a big part of increasing enrollment, which is why continuing to fund sports programs is vital to the university's future. >we've been a stable kind of environment for the university for years, anywhere from 250 to 350 athletes. on top of that, we have another couple of hundred kids that actually attend the school hoping to make the teams. >but late this afternoon, the university sent out an email to staff saying ncaa athletics will not be reinstated for the 2025 2026 school year, a huge blow to the coaches who've been vocal leaders of this effort. >golf team in particular. we have zero players left in our golf program, so everyone has

moved on, both men and women, and i know it's the same with all the other sport. >enrollment at csu is down almost 40% over the past ten years and combined with increased costs to operate, the university administrators say they were forced to make cuts to balance the budget. the one time $45 million infusion of cash is going to be used to boost a number of programs, including 16 million to expand the nursing program, 5 million for a data science center, another 5 million for a career center, 9 million to restore funding for programs already cut and 8 million for athletics over the next three years. in addition to the athletics program being >cut, >>many students say the possibility of their degree programs being eliminated led them to transfer away, creating even more enrollment issues for those who are almost finished with their degrees. like matthew cruz, he says he's optimistic that with the added funding, he'll be able to finish the program.

>i'm going to stay here. i think i have, two more years, see how that goes. but i feel i feel >all right. for val. i'm blessed, as they say. right. he's not giving up the fight and says he'll take a year off and hopes to come back to coach the golf program a year from >now. we'll put, you know, sonoma state back on the map and recreate the brand and let people know how wonderful our place is here. and, just give us a chance and we'll we'll succeed. okay. i hope you got that one. >juliette>in that email to employees, sonoma state administrators said that they're going to create a working group to make recommendations on the future of the athletics program and hope to have a plan by january of 2026. the trump administration has given california a new ultimatum today. it found that the state had violated title nine civil rights law by allowing transgender athletes to compete on girls sports teams. the battle picked up steam with a

transgender track and field player recently competed in the state championships, and now billions of dollars in federal education funding could be in jeopardy. amanda hari talked to a former and current athletes on both sides of this heated debate. >the federal government is giving california ten days to ban transgender athletes in women's sports and strip them of their awards. a new chapter in the battle over transgender rights. >as a trans person myself, i'm >upset. carly webb is a trans woman, a journalist and a competitive athlete. she still plays semi-pro tackle football, but her sports journey started decades >ago. that's the first team i played for when i was ten years old. that's why these issues i speak out because i know the positive and wonderful things sports has given me for my entire life,

california, i was beyond ecstatic because i'm watching female sports be erased. i'm hearing the stories from the girls who are having to compete against a male or share a locker room >with a male. lori says no one is being discriminated against. >no one's being banned from sports. our message is clear males have to compete in the male category. females have to compete in the female category. everyone has the opportunity to compete and to try out for the teams and sports of their choice. it just has to align with your .... >the case will likely wind up in the courts, but webb >says >>she's confident california's policy will >win. in every state that has undergone a challenge in a federal court. what the trump administration is trying to do now, it's lost. hopefully, california does the same. and in fact, from what i hear, they are doing the same. taping the court because the because the record shows this doesn't hold up. >juliette>the california interscholastic federation did try to find some middle ground

>juliette>in less than an hour, the golden state valkyries will be taking on the defending wnba champs in new york liberty. it's a game that you can watch on our sister station pix. plus, in our kelsi thorud. she's at chase center right now. lots of excitement for this matchup tonight. what you >live>find in. yeah, devin. well, in addition to the fact that the valkyries are taking on the defending champions in the liberty, the other big storyline here tonight is, of course, sabrina ionescu. she is an east bay native coming back to the bay area for the very first time to face these valkyries. and, you know, we've been out here talking to fans before this game. we are seeing a mix of both valkyries jerseys, a lot

of sabrina ionescu jerseys, some college jerseys. so people are excited to see their hometown hero >back >>here at chase, we got the chance to talk with some fans who are rooting for both the liberty and the valkyries. >we're big. sabrina fans followed her. i had season tickets when she was at oregon. you know, the valkyries are doing great as an expansion first team and i'm excited to see how they do. they've been having a great season so far, but go liberty watching it on tv here at the. arena has been amazing. just the fan crowds and just the all the hype that you hear about it. so i'm excited to be here. so i'm going to root for the valkyries. i got a rep, sabrina, because it's not very often that you see someone from walnut creek, california on the big stage. >live>you know, devin, it's fun to see this game. it's very similar to what we saw when the valkyries faced the indiana fever and caitlin clark. there was a lot of hype around seeing caitlin clark for the first time at chase center. it is equal, if not more, tonight for sabrina just because she is the

hometown hero here. we actually met some people that played against her in high school. so a lot of excitement going into this game. but of course, so many people still hoping that the valkyries pull out the win in the end. >juliette>all right. thank you so much, kelsey. one of the best players in the league and homegrown as well. thank you so much. northern california special olympics torch made its way through san francisco today. police and deputies carried it two miles from aquatic park near fisherman's wharf to union square. the run raises funds for the special olympics. the torch the torch still has a long way to go before it reaches its final destination in santa clara. >this torch represents unity. it connects every person, city and team taking part in these games. it symbolizes the idea that everyone belongs and that no matter your path, you are part of something bigger.

>juliette>the torch has now been passed down to san mateo county law enforcement. the special olympics will be held at santa clara university this weekend. the opening ceremony is this friday in hayward, a shelter for domestic abuse and human trafficking victims is expanding. betty's village now has 42 more beds in a tiny home available for new residents. the nonprofit restorative pathways says a typical stay ranges between 60 days and six months, with the goal of helping residents find permanent housing at the end of their stay. the nonprofit also says that each of the eight new tiny homes is a space where people can heal and find a fresh start. >nobody wakes up and says that they want to come to a shelter, but when that is their only option, we want to make sure that this is the best option that they have available. >juliette>betty's village also has a 24 hour community center on site, which includes a center for case management and trauma recovery center. free furniture friday is back in the

6:18 pm
6:19 pm
there's a flex alert, and team california is playing it cool. pre-cooling before 4 pm? that's cold. but can they turn it up in the fourth? fans are going crazy! another big win for team california. the power is ours.

>juliette>and we're joined now by chief meteorologist paul hagan. we have reached the middle of the >paul>week. >>little breezy. >paul>a little >juliette>bit, still. a little foggy in some areas, but a little bit warmer for >paul>the back end. right. so not climbing the other side of the temperature roller coaster. it's not going to get crazy hot anytime soon, but just a gentle warming trend over the next couple of days. let's talk about the details here. and we'll look at just the big picture pattern of how things are going to shape up across the entire state. this is a representation of today's temperatures, the usual assortment of colors with the cooler readings at the coast and the hottest temperatures in the central valley. it's going to be a similar pattern on friday, but look at how the heat intensifies the central
6:21 pm
valley, and you can really see how it is contained by the terrain barriers around the central valley. oftentimes we talk about the fog overcoming the terrain barriers and making its way farther inland. in this case, on friday, we're talking about the heat overcoming some of the terrain barriers farther to the east and making its way towards the bay area. the exception to that, though, is at the coast, a very slight warming trend there, but it's not going to be too dramatic, which is kind of what you're expecting at this point in the month of june, after today's high temperature of 60 degrees in san francisco, the average high so far this month has been 62.4 degrees on a day by day basis, which makes this the 22nd coldest stretch to open the month of june, the first 25 days in june on record and the coldest since 1999. so it's not record setting. but if you've been thinking, it seems unusually chilly and unusually breezy even for the month of june, that's an accurate assessment, and the fog is rolling back out once again as we look out from salesforce tower to the north, temperatures anywhere from the 50s in san francisco back down to 56 after that high of 60
6:22 pm
briefly. it's also in the 50s across the bay in oakland, 60 in san jose, but then 70 in livermore and santa rosa, and still holding on to 80 degrees in concord. the usual spread of temperatures that we do expect here in late june. let's talk about the fog and how it's going to behave as we head through the rest of tonight. we'll switch to the local map and track the fog as it becomes more widespread. once again, not quite as much of an intrusion into the inland valleys by early tomorrow morning, but it is going to be pretty widespread around the bay and certainly along the coast, to begin the day on thursday at the coast. i don't think you're going to see a lot of sunshine yet tomorrow, but maybe a few glimmers. and around the bay the sun should be breaking through already by mid-morning or so. so the less dominant the fog is, the more our temperatures have a chance to warm up to a greater extent. and that is going to be the case tomorrow with the usual assortment of, again, skillet skittles colors. easy for me to say in the background on our temperature map. let's talk about the numbers getting up to 77 degrees in san jose about where we were today. maybe a couple degrees warmer, low to mid 80s for los gatos and morgan hill temperatures east of the oakland hills. there's
6:23 pm
the return of our first 90 degree reading around antioch and brentwood. otherwise mostly in the 80s and very close to normal for this time of year. same thing for bayside. highs mostly in the 70s mid to upper 60s in san francisco. would make it one of the warmest days so far this month, near just above 60 degrees at the coast. assuming enough sunshine glimmers through the clouds, and then 70 to 80 in the north bay, and another 90 degree plus reading around healdsburg by tomorrow afternoon, up to 92 degrees there, we're going to be seeing those temperatures taking a more of a break as we head into early next week. so the warm up that's in store for us is not going to last too long. let's check out the seven day forecast and we'll start inland where the hottest days are going to be friday and saturday into the 90s on a more widespread basis. friday. but it doesn't last long. we're back to near average temperatures as we head through most of next week, bayside temperatures go up and down a little bit, but the closer you are to the bay and the coast, the more consistent the temperature pattern is going to be a brief kind of baby warm up in store by friday and saturday. and at the coast, well, hardly any change to your temperatures, but what you are
6:24 pm
going to see by friday and saturday is more sunshine. one more day in the june gloom, and then a little bit of early summer sunshine for friday and saturday. >juliette>devin. all right. thank you paul. when we come back, the coast guard's tallest ship is docked in san francisco for the first time in 17 years. how you can get a look. and here's what's ahead on the cbs evening news >tonight. the drive to tehran. our colleague, imtiaz tayyab takes us into iran. how has the war with israel changed the country and what comes next? tonight on the cbs evening news. now
