1:39 am
tonight in san francisco, where city leaders are celebrating the arrival of the city's newest football club. and to be perfectly plainspoken, we're talking about soccer. they are set to host matches at kezar stadium, and local businesses in the area say they couldn't be more thrilled. however, not everyone in the city is planning to cheer on the new team. andrea nakano reports. >>welcome club to san francisco and to kezar stadium. >>the new mls next franchise will call kezar stadium home for the next 15 years. kezar pub, which is right across the street, will be one of the biggest fans of the team. >>we're big football fan soccer fans here and this bar is synonymous with with soccer. football, as we call it. >>the pub is two years shy of celebrating its 90th birthday and was here when the 40 niners called kezar home. cyril hackett wasn't here then, but
1:40 am
has owned this bar for almost 30 years. >>we needed a shot in the arm because i think we get forgotten a little bit out here. >>many other businesses in the city. kezar pub has been slow to recover from shutdowns implemented during covid. >>we've weathered the storm here. we're one of the lucky ones. you know, people are starting to come back into the bars. people are starting to come back and watch sports. but a lot of people did change their habits. so, you know, i mean, we're not going to be crying. we can't cry forever. you know, we have to get up, get up and go at >>it. kezar pub has become the place to go to watch pretty much any live sporting event on tv. but a new mls next team playing its home games just feet away is something hackett is looking forward to. >>you have to start thinking to the future. there's probably a minimum of 20 games per year. it's great for our staff. we'll have to hire more people, more revenue for the city. i mean, what can be wrong with >>that? mayor daniel lurie says the team will invest $10 million for a new field seating and scoreboard at kezar stadium. the professional developmental
1:41 am
league should be ready to kick off in 2026 or 2027. >>kezar is so ingrained in our city's history and the lives of everyday residents that golden city fc's investment is truly an investment in the people of san francisco. >>but there are some soccer fans that are not ready to welcome a new team. >>i'm heartbroken. >>scott brown is a huge fan of sf city fc, which currently plays its home games at kezar. he worries the team will get the boot when golden city comes into town. >>it's a shame to have somebody overlook a grassroots, fan owned organization like sfc, fc. we're really proud of ourselves. we're really proud of the name. we're really proud of the team. >>but from a business perspective, hackett can't wait to meet his new neighbors across the street. >>you can have too much beer, that's for sure. right? and tequila and tequila, yes, but you can't. you never have enough. enough soccer, you know. >>of course, the keys are news. isn't the only pro sports news happening in the bay area.

tonight. the golden state valkyries, they hosted the defending champs in new york, liberty, and it marked a homecoming for star players sabrina ionescu. she was born in walnut creek and was a standout at miramonte high school in orinda. it wasn't even clear if she was going to play tonight because of an injury, but she was on the court at tipoff and fans from all over were there to cheer her on. but that's where the loyalty ended for some of them. >>so did you travel here for the game? we did. yeah. we're big. sabrina fans followed her. i had season tickets when she was at oregon, so just trying to catch any game i can when she's close. i got a rep. sabrina, because it's not very often that you see someone from walnut creek, california on the big stage, so had to rep her, but i think i'll be rooting for the hometown team. >>i asked you told matt lively before the game that she expected to have around 100 friends and family in attendance at chase center tonight. as for the hometown team, the valkyries put up an incredibly hard fight against the champs. it all came down to the final few seconds of the
1:43 am
game, and vern glenn joins me later. this half hour with all of the highlights that you might have missed. the trump administration has given california a new ultimatum. the department of education says the state is in violation of civil rights laws because it allows transgender athletes to compete on girls sports teams. the federal government is giving california ten days to ban transgender athletes in women's sports, and to strip them of their awards, billions of dollars in federal education funding could be in jeopardy if the state doesn't comply with the trump administration's demands. now, this battle picked up steam after a transgender track and field player competed and won medals in the state championship. >>i know the positive and wonderful things sports has given me for my entire life, all the way through my transition and into my transition. and i don't want to see kids get cheated out of that. no one's being banned from sports. our message is clear males have to compete in the male category. females have to
1:44 am
compete in the female category. everyone has the opportunity to compete and to try out for the teams and sports of their choice. it just has to align with your .... >>the california interscholastic federation did try to find some middle ground when it changed its rules to allow cisgender athletes to share the podium, if they would have lost a medal to a transgender athlete. meanwhile, governor gavin newsom says the state is not budging on its position. a bookstore in san francisco is making a bold move to stand up for transgender rights. it's pulling the wildly popular harry potter series from its shelves over author j.k. rowling's attacks on the trans community. the booksmith on haight street posted the announcement on its website, and came up with a list of other books in that same genre. it is all in response to the author's recently announced women's fund, which offers legal support for those forced to comply with inclusive policies in the workplace.

pride month, we're highlighting a unique drag show, and it's one that is quickly gaining traction in the bay area. these drag queens don't need a stage to put on a show or heat. diehard shows us why they decided to pick up roller skates instead. >>on the edge of oakland, right by the bay, something fabulous is afoot. drag queens, those glittering stars of the late night stage have rolled out of the dark. and into the park. they've swapped the spotlight for the sunlight, the velvet rope for a view of the bay and high heels for four wheels. never the result. rolling with a homos, a monthly drag skate party right on the waterfront.
1:46 am
welcome to today's ringleader of this rolling rainbow is a queen named angel. food cakes, which might explain why everyone here is eating it up. i think it's a mixture of people love watching skaters, you know, they love seeing somebody doing something so kind of unusual, and it can be beautiful, but it can also be silly. we'll be there. what began as a scrappy sidewalk performance quickly gained traction, turning into a highly popular monthly show. anybody want to throw in a dollar or two? co-founder nikki j says there was no script, just skates, rhinestones and a whole lot of heart. most drag performers were all out at the clubs and it's late night and it's, you know, not all ages. and this is a way that we can, like, connect with our community. and it's all happening. as the aclu reports, over 570 anti-lgbtq bills have been introduced nationwide this year. more than 50 have already
1:47 am
been signed into law, most targeting trans americans. that mix of spectacle and sanctuary is what draws 16 year old cora mcskimming. she can't get into the clubs just yet, but here she can skate alongside the queens she admires. i think it's about the community. it's a celebration of queer joy. speaking of joy, this is joy clinard, whose dad, drew says she's been attending since she was in diapers. she loves drag queens, so we've been coming here since she was two, and she thinks these are like, celebrity level, like, as good as it gets. drag queens. are putting a different spin on skating and giving a whole new meaning to the phrase role model. >>the showcase happens at township commons in oakland every fourth sunday of the month. it is free. all you need is a pair of skates and a little attitude. and be sure to watch our pride special on sunday on pix. plus, we're going to highlight members of
1:48 am
the lgbtq community making a difference here in the bay area. it all starts at 10 a.m. on pix plus. that is the same day as the san francisco pride parade. if you are thinking of lighting up the skies in san jose through less than legal means this 4th of july, you might want to think again. san jose police are getting a boost from technology and locals to stop illegal fireworks. plus, it's not something that you want to look up and see a plane with smoke and fire shooting out from one of its engines. where that happened today. >>still looking at. clear skies over san jose. the fog and low cloud cover hasn't rolled in just yet, but it's on its way to the santa clara valley. temperatures today did warm back up to close to normal levels inland. still chilly by the coast. we'll take a look at even warmer conditions for the end of the workweek. coming up in the first alert forecast. >>and it's traditional for a wedding cake to come with a

>>the faa is investigating after flames suddenly started shooting out of an american airlines plane. it happened not long after it took off from las vegas. you can hear the pops. yeah, you can hear it right there. the pops coming from one of the engines and see the smoke trailing behind it. the flight was headed to north carolina, but it started having issues just moments after takeoff. the plane was able to turn around and land safely. american airlines says its maintenance team inspected the aircraft and found no evidence that the engine caught on fire. six crew members and 153 passengers were on board at the time. no one was hurt. the city of san jose is stepping up its efforts to stop the use of illegal fireworks. with the help of more eyes on the ground and in the sky. our lynn ramirez has more on how the city plans to crack down using
1:53 am
drones over certain hotspots, and a network of citizen spotters. >>from rockets lighting up the sky to deafening explosion shaking the ground. this is what the 4th of july looks and sounds like in parts of san jose. and not an official fireworks show, but right in neighborhood streets. >>people joke about saying it's baghdad by the bay. it's awful, you know, it's it's dangerous. it's illegal. >>jeff levine has lived in san jose for over two decades, and says the illegal fireworks problem has gotten worse. >>cars tossing fire, anything from the little firecrackers to the big explosive m1000 out in the street and they zoom off and then they blow up and cars are coming in and swerving to
1:54 am
avoid the explosions. >>but this year, the city is launching a more coordinated ground and aerial effort for the first time this 4th of july, san jose police will launch drones to capture footage of illegal fireworks use, joining several other cities like elk grove, which shot this footage. the built in gps will allow the city to locate hotspots and go after associated property owners. >>the information being gathered by the drones will be real time, and so it will be relayed to the operator. so i mean, that is a good message that we want to let people know is, you know, again, have fun. 4th of july, be safe. but also we're watching, you know, fireworks are illegal in the city of san jose and has always been. >>and the city's largest neighborhood group is supporting and participating in the stepped up enforcement. >>we as a neighborhood organization across the city, along with the city, want more people involved in reporting where fireworks are launched. >>steve spivak is part of san jose's all district leadership group, which is working to encourage neighbors to report
1:55 am
illegal fireworks using the 311 app, which now has a dedicated tab just for that purpose. and this year, code enforcement officers will be issuing citations directly to homes connected to illegal fireworks use. spivak says the los angeles fires prompted san jose to strengthen enforcement actions. >>fences, walls, landscaping, you name it, are all vulnerable to fire that can be started by embers created by the rocket launches. and you have the potential for some some awful results because people are using these illegal fireworks. >>levine is bracing for another 4th of july, but as the holiday approaches, he hopes that with stronger community involvement and a few more eyes on the skies, this holiday will be a little quieter and a lot safer. but if it's not, san jose is also planning to use its social host ordinance, plus fines and even possible citations for spectators. >>fire officials also told us
1:56 am
that even so-called safe and sane fireworks are illegal in san jose. violators could face fines up to $1,000. illegally selling fireworks could lead to jail time and $50,000 fines. if you do want to report illegal fireworks in your area, you can download the san jose 311 app and click the fireworks tab. reports can be submitted anonymously. >>first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at wkyc.com. kia movement that inspires. >>joined now by chief meteorologist paul hagan. you know, i drive up from the south >>bay every >>day and i don't know what it's going to be like >>in the city >>until i get >>here, >>open my door. and it was pretty chilly and pretty breezy. >>yeah, but you could see the sunshine today in san francisco, unlike yesterday when it was gray. >>it was pretty >>gray. yeah. so the grayness has rolled back in, but at least a little bit of sunshine brightens some moods. let's take a look at how things look right now. and the fog is returning. this is the current
1:57 am
satellite view. and you can see that channel of fog that is reaching right through the golden gate, aiming towards the east bay and the oakland hills. and of course, there's plenty of fog along the coast, and that's going to be a factor as we head through tonight into early tomorrow morning. maybe not quite as much of a factor as it was today should be backing up to the coast pretty quickly, but it certainly had an impact along with the onshore breeze on our temperatures so far this month, especially in san francisco. let me make sure i turn on my tracker here so the little monitor pops up in the right location, and it has been an unusually chilly month of june for a month. it is already chilly and breezy in the city. the average high temperature through the first 25 days of june. this does include today 62.4 degrees in san francisco, which actually makes it the 22nd coldest start first 25 days to the month of june on record, and the coldest first 25 days of june since 1999. so something that hasn't happened in 26 years. now we are going to have a little baby warm up over the next couple of days. you wouldn't be able to guess it right now. as we look out at the fog, mist and drizzle as we
1:58 am
look out from the mark, hopkins hotel temperature in the city is at 53 degrees. we're at that point in the evening where the difference in temperatures that was about 30 degrees from the coast to inland today has narrowed down to five degrees, from 53 in the city to 58 degrees right now in concord. and temperatures are only going to drop another 2 to 4 degrees as we head through the rest of tonight. now, the fog again isn't going to be as much of a factor for inland parts of the bay area. some push across the bay into the inland valleys of the north bay and the santa clara valley, not as much of it east of the oakland hills, but even where it does make its way inland, it retreats quickly to around the bay by mid-morning and all the way back to the coast already by lunchtime. now, at the coast, i don't think you're going to see much more than a couple glimmers of sunshine tomorrow. but by friday and saturday, that's when you have a better chance of breaking through to a little bit more sun. but coastal temperatures are still going to be cool, so we see the usual range and temperatures cool on the coast, mild around the bay and warm some spots inland, even getting hot. let's take a look at the forecast. high temperatures for tomorrow. getting up to the mid to upper
1:59 am
70s and low to mid 80s in the santa clara valley. warmer and warmer the farther inland you go, as always. same thing east of the oakland hills, all the way up to around 90 for antioch and brentwood. otherwise mostly in the 80s, mostly 70s around the bay with upper 60s in san francisco. one of the warmest days so far this month. and for the north bay, we go from the upper 70s into the 80s, even above 90 degrees around healdsburg. and we're going to add a few more 90s to the map as we finish the workweek on friday and head into the weekend. so let's take a look at the seven day forecast, and we will start with inland parts of the bay area, where the hottest day is likely going to be friday. there could be a few communities that do hold on to some of that heat on saturday as well. and then we're back to basically normal temperatures as we finish the month of june and head into early july. the really long range forecast continues to point to a slightly below average temperature pattern for the 4th of july. it's still beyond the scope of the seven day forecast. never too early to look ahead to the holiday around the bay, temperatures are going to stay pretty consistent as they will the coast coastal communities. what you're going to notice is after one more gray day, june gloom
2:00 am
takes a little bit of a break for friday and saturday before the clouds start to sneak back in for the last day of june, and we head into no sky july at the coast. verne has been very busy this evening. got the giants, got the valkyries. i'm sure we got other stuff to. >>a whole boatload of stuff there. paul. straight ahead in sports nba draft. first night came and went nine innings. not enough for the giants and the valkyrie's defense and offense shine. just not bright enough against the reigning wnba champs.
