marked by scandal has died at the age of 87. ♪ welcome to world news america on pbs and around the globe. a man will be charged with attempted murder following the attack of the husband of the speaker of the u.s. house of representatives, paul pelosi. he was hospitalized due to his injuries. the suspect was wielding hammer and shouting, where is nancy? nancy pelosi was in washington at the time of the attack. president biden had been in touch with miss pelosi to express his support. we have more. >> police say the intruder used a hammer to smash glass doors and break into the pelosi home, shouting where is nancy? this appears to be a targeted attack. he tried to tie up paul pelosi,

for mr. pelosi's recovery. violent political threats and attacks have increased alarly in america in the last two years. senior politicians are worried it will not be long before one of them is skills. -- killed. michelle: there are reports that the suspect posted multiple conspiracy theories on social media. with me is our north america correspondent. what do we know so far? what does it tell us what we are learning in terms of what he was looking at and posting online? >> we know he was talking about conspiracy theories. he was embroiled in right wing fever swamps of conspiracy theories, focusing on antigovernment rhetoric and rhetoric targeting democrats. so, it seems, again this is

someone who has immersed themselves in the fringes of social media and online of right wing hate speech, so he was connected to all of this and it is a problem we have seen coming up again and again. michelle: threats of political olence are rising against politicians. it's sad to say that we have seen political violence in the past. when you think back to the 60's and 70's, lot focused was on the far left. is that the case this time around? what is triggering it? >> that's a good question. i think part of the rise of violence comes from alienation from the system. in the 60's and 70's, the antigovernment feeling, that the system is working against them, maybe that was more on the left but there was right wing violence as well during the 60's. but now you see aer on the

rights, feelings like the system is not working for individuals, that the system is working against them. this alienation is contributing to the rise of violent rhetoric and in this case action against politicians or family members. michelle: so, you look at this, what will it take to change their narrative and turn this around? >> that's a good question. i wish i had a good answer for it. and i talked to politicians on the left and right, they blame was going on with social media on one hand with the nationalization of politics and the 24 hour news cycle were politicians on television all the time. there in front of people's faces all the time, they become common sites. if people around the country focus on politicians and take what they say personally, maybe

a cooling of the rhetoric from politicians, not talking about the fact that someone is evil, that an opponent has destroyed america, that an election outcome is either going to save america or be a mortal threat to the country, this kind of escalated rhetoric may make certain people who have a predisposition to violence more likely to take action. if that rhetoric can be tamped down, perhaps that is a solution. it's hard to see this de-escalating anytime soon. michelle: a return to civility. your rhetoric is always civil. thank you for joining us. this sunday will be the second and final round of presidential elections in brazil. the due candidates are e to confront each other in a much-anticipated tv debate. the former leftists leader lula is leading the race over far right incumbent bolsonaro.

in first round, bolsonaro did better than paul suggested. our south america correspondent reports. [chanting] >> these past few weeks on the road have been noisy and relentless both lula and bolsonaro have become aware this is a tight race. his support is underestimated in the first round, bolsonaro came into the second round feeling confident. lula knows this will not be an easy win even if the polls put them in the lead for now. this party shop owner is hoping for celebrations of her own this weekend. she has little faith in the polls and is convinced bolsonaro will win it. >> i don't believe in the polls. i go to the demonstrations and their peaceful, it is beautiful the green and yellow colors, families, children.

the streets say opposite of the polls. if you look at the demonstrations, you'll see it is different. >> in a campaign prone to fake news, it is taken on bigger dimensions these past few weeks there have been accusations of satanism and cannibalism. the second round has dissented into a holy war as candidates vie for religious votes. lula's has had support from catholic folk -- votes and bolsonaro evangelical voters. this man feels bolsonaro has gone too far. >> faith has been seized upon as a political identity and people are validating the christian beliefs on on, based off. ndidate to be bought.sonaro >> politics has never felt so

ated. philippe a's for -- felipe's families owned this newsstand, but no chitchat with customers because it has become personal. >> sunda will become a watershed moment, whether we continue to contact -- continue with the politics we have now are one in the past. people are deciding between good and bad, that doesn't exist, the country deserves the politician. >> bolsoro has attacked the voting system offering up baseless allegations of fraud. the concern that tropical trump could follow in the footsteps of his friend in the north. this weekend brings to an end a bitter campaign, battle between huge populist politicians on either end of the political spectrum. whoever wins will have a huge job on their hands trying to

cover -- govern this deeply divided country. amid an economic crisis in brazil, the political drama is far from over. michelle: katie joins me live. katie i gathethat donald trump has give his endorsement to bolsonaro. how did things stand as a go to thweekend? >> it's a big day, i you look at the polls, 45% of valid votes would go to bolsonaro, 49% would go to lula. that puts lula in the lead of winning the presidency on sunday. that is the big question, the polls, they were inaccurate when it came to bolsonaro in the first round. few people trust them. it has become a tighter race than people were expecting a month ago. michelle: katie listening to your report, americans might see themselves in brazils election.

as we are seeing a more intense version of the u.s. culture wars. >> absolutely. bolsonaro is nicknamed tropical trump. he is a ge admirer of donald trump. there are links between the two teams. what we see here in brazil is a if you take the issue of abortion rights, people here did not have those rights in the first place. there is a deeply conservative society, with a growing evangelical community. that is, the battle growing out when you look at the two candidates, bolsonaro the family values man versus lulu who represents all of brazil. two characteristics of the main candidates. michelle: katie is in sao pau --

powell -- sao paulo for us. twitter is in the hands of elon musk, he has promised change in organization. a number of executives have been fired and there are questions about twitter's future direction. our technology editor reports. >> to his many fans one of the most influential people in the world. he is the richest. he made his money with paypal and is now the boss of the electric car front, tesla. he owns a space x and his star link satellite network provides internet access around the world. he adds twitter, the small but mighty social network. let that sink in he said walking into twitter hq, carrying a sink. roll. what does the tech billionaire want to do with it? he has said he wants to see twitter become more open the free speech. >> if he starts to see that certain typos free -- free speech environment where the thing goes, it can become a health scape, that may see people leave, in which case advertisers paying to be on the site might get concerned because there will be fewer eyeballs looking at their ads. you have to strike the right balance between the condo of -- kind of content managers -- content management to keep users happy and free speech. >> twitter has become the place where politicians come to share their views. it's a direct line between the decision-makers and us the people they represent. elon musk says we need a digital town square, a community space for public discussion. twitter, he argues is it. several topic ex -- top execs

have been sacked. >> i will suspect they will want to get some degree of certainty that elon musk will not be running it like his twitter account. it is full of jokes. people want to degree of seriousness. >> the's lots of speculation about whether his takeover will mean the return of the high profile banned list, like donald trump. trump has said that twitter is in sane hands, but he has no plans to return for now. michelle: the u.s. has imposed sanctions on an iranian foundation, to anyone who killed the british writer. he is the author of a book

considered blasphemous according to iranian leaders. there has been a new wave of deadly clashes in iran with security court that firing on testers, automatic gunfire -- proteste,. a person has been shot dead in the southeastern city when they described as a known people opened fire. 40 people including members of the security forces have been wounded. there has been a buildup of security forces. >> we were expecting some violence there. this is a province populated by the minority in iran on the eastern side of the country, similar to what happened on the western side where the other province that had seen deadly crashes there as well. as he said last month there have been deadly clashes in the capital of the province. we have saw -- seen the death of

at least 60 people. the government sacked to local police authorities yesterday to calm things down. but that didot help. the supporters of the prominent cleric flanked it today to a mosque to hear his ceremony in which he is a recognized and tolerated figure by iran's shiite regime delivered a fiery speech talking about the discrimination suffered in iran why the minority and things which would be considered redlined for himself, freedom of worship and expression. all that got his supporters fired up and they clashed with the security forces that had been deployed to the area a day before. michelle: now, pakistan's former prime minister has begun leading a week long march of the

supporters from the eastern city, demanding early elections. the march comes after he was ousted in april after losing a confidence vote in parliament. our reporter is at a rally in the hall. >> right now i am here, one of the iconic spots that the former prime minister of iran so that he can -- former prime minister of pakistan. you can see that thousands of people who are actually here they came here for their leader. the leadership is also here. six month ago, he has been holding rallies and public meeti ngs in pakistan.
