and boys killed with guns? >> jacqueline: if we don't ask the right quesiotns we won't get the rigth answers. the question we need to be asking is why men and boys kill with guns. dr. will courtneay says if we really want to figure out violent acts like the shooting in connecticut - it is necessary to focus on boys in society. >> this case like so many others we know committed suicide and adam lanza must have been depressed and had other mental health needs. >>reporter: doctor courtneay has written a book called "dying to be men" he says, indepth data reveals a broad failure to in society. >> what we really need to look at is sadness and pain. bad an early age only good emotion is anger. >>reporter: in addition, dr. courtneay says boys and men also receive messages in the media that encourage them to act out their issues in violent ways. >> boys and men also were
present violence they get what they want. what is worse is that there are usually no consequences for that behavior. instead, what men and boys are taught is that violence is in effect of means to get what they want. >>reporter: leslielastly-dr. courtneay adds that it is encouraging that some politicans are calling for a commission on mental illness in light of the shooting, he hopes that they will concentrate on the shortcomings facing men and boys so that real answers can put into place. therese estacio, kron 4 news. >>catherine: the shooting at that connecticut grade school is having an impact on schools here in the bay area. today, kron4 talked to the principal at alvarado elementary in san francisco.about what's being done to keep children safe. >> we're already going to reinforce their plans that are in place to reinforce the out word doors. and

lawmakers are calling for stricter gun laws in response to the school shooting while others are proposing just the opposite. one oregon state representative says people at schools should be taught to use guns in times of crisis. >> "but, people who are trained and who will be armed and when the first shot is fired on the next campus, they can respond and meet lethal force with lethal force." >>reporter: an abc news/ washington post poll released today has given an indication that more people are ready to support gun control laws. 44-percent of those polled strongly support stricter gun laws. with 32 percent opposed. >> we are asking on facebook if stricter laws are needed. >>catherine: police and community members have been working to get guns off bay area streets. over the weekend -- a record six-hundred guns in san francisco and oakland were turned in, during buy-back programs. kron 4's j.r. stone has
