look at our top stories at eight-thirty. the funerals for 2 of the 26 shooting victims killed in a connecticut school were held today. as that was happening - school supplies were being trucked to a different school building - where classes will eventually resume. and that connecticut community is getting an outpouring of support from around the country. tonight in burlingame, dozens of people attended a vigil for the victims. and many people turned out for gun buy-back programs in both san francisco and oakland. we're learning tonight just how successful those programs turned out to be. people got 2-hundred dollars for every gun that was handed over. nearly 600 guns were turned in gun control has become a hot topic again. in the wake of the school shooting. kron 4's justine waldman has more on what politicians are saying.and what changes are likely. >>reporter: as funerals and candle light vigils take place.across the nation after the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. the debate over control has started again. president obama addressed the issue during a memorial

people. and the united states has, by far, the most gun-related homicides of any other developed country. in 2011, the u-s had more than 91-hundred gun-related murders.compared to japan, which had just 11. and that may have something to do with the strict regulations the japanese government has in place. first off handgun ownership in japan is illegal.even holding a handgun, let alone firing one, is illegal and can get you one to 10 years in prison. the only type of gun you can legally own is a shotgun.and the process to buy one is complicated. you have to attend an all- day class and pass a written test. you also have to pass a shooting range class. then you have to take a mental test and drug test.which the police will have on file. then you have to pass a background check. and not only do you have to lock and store your gun.you have to tell the police exactly where in your home the gun will be stored. then the police will inspect the gun once per year.and you have to re-take that class and exam every three years. >>catherine: a local psychotherapist says society is not dealing well problems of men and boys. he says it's necessary to ask the right questions in order to prevent violence. and says it's critically important to notice warning signs. >> some of these are the
