kron 4's charles clifford is live near the home. where demonstrations were also taking place. chuck? >> reporter: the motorcade arrived less than 10 minutes ago and it was greeted by people that have been waiting all afternoon. hundreds of protesters were in pacific heights are expressing their views on a large number of topics. the controversial pipeline. it would bring additional oil south of canada. many people wanted the president to stop the project. >> climate change is going to make the plan that on the inhabitable. >> he personally knows the right thing to do is to stop the pipeline in its truck. >> the momentum is building across the country >> the protesters greeted

in keeping the bay bridge safe during a large earthquake. an unaccetable mistake according to caltrans. the director of the state department of transportation mailed *this memo to those in charge of the new span outlining what changes he wants moving forward. to startput the contractor on notice that it must show it is in compliance with the contract. the total cost of the new span is 6-billion dollars. also, do more testing on the bolts to see what caused them to break. and identify all other parts of the bridge that came from the same supplier as those bolts and re- inspect them. those bad bolts came from dyson corp. a family-run

".period of time" tonight, quinn boyer remains in critical condition at highland hospital in oakland. new tonight at eight---san jose home burglaries are up, and records show that neighbors are doing something about it. kron 4's alecia reid tells us about the increase in home security systems. >> reporter: home break-ins in san jose are on the rise. in fact, vice president of bay alarm, eric taylor tells they have seen a significant jump in installations over the last year. numbers have tripled in residential homes. with the san jose police department's shortage of officers, he attributes the increase to homeowners awareness of property crimes, and wanting to protect their families taylor tells us the normal 4-6 percent increase of new customers spiked 15 percent since 2012. he says burglars will normally go elsewhere when they realize the home they are breaking into is secured.generally a thief is interested in going

north korean leader kim jong=un ratcheting up his threats against the u=s. his army announcing today it has final approval to launch "merciless" military strikes on the united states, including the possible use of "cutting-edge" nuclear weapons. the word came just hours after the pentagon unveiled plans to deploy anti=missile defenses on the pacific island of guam. despite its string of successful missile tests, pentagon analysts do not believe north korea has the technology to launch a nuclear attack on the u=s. but defense secretary chuck hagel says the u=s cannot afford to take chances. >> we take those threats seriously. we have to take those threats seriously this is the latest counter=move: truck mounted interceptor missiles are being moved to guam. they will supplement larger defense missiles based in alaska and hawaii. both systems are designed to home in on warheads in the upper atmosphere. according to the army's former chief intelligence officer in south korea, there is not much ogf a chance we will have to use the missile defense. it's completely rhetoric right now based on what we can see into north korea, and we have incredible technical capabilities to read what the north is doing. what we don't do a

a spokesman for the fort knox army post in central kentucky says a shooting has occurred there, but he had no immediate word on whether anyone was injured. kyle hodges says the shooting wednesday afternoon was near the post's human resources center. he was on his way back to the post after receiving word of the shooting. wave-tv reported the post was on a heightened security alert. >> pam: more trouble for the carnival cruise ship that broke down in the gulf of mexico for days. it broke away from a dock in alabama during high winds today. and tonight. the coast guard is searching for a missing worker who was knocked into the water when winds blew their guard shack over. a witness describes the scene. >> someone said 'oh my god look at the carnival cruise ship' it done turned sideways into the actual river and a tugboat was trying all it could to keep it in the center of the river but it ended up pinning the tugboat against the bank."
