looking at the bay bridge. a wind advisory has just ended for the bay area. i'm here in the weather center with kron4's jacqueline bennet. who is tracking the conditions. jacqueline? it certainly was a powerful wind event. in excess of 70 mph, 75 wind gusting at ocean beach. 62 mph in fort funston for the last 24 hours. right now the wind is calm winds, right now but it is windy in half moon bay. 23 mph right now. redwood city, 18 in hayward. and oakland. the wind

gusting in pretty strong in some locations we can see through santa rosa and redwood city. it has died down. it is definitely calm winds now but compared to earlier. modeled right now with 65 degrees. 58 in oakland temperatures are going to drop off quarter of it overnight. still breezy but nothing like what we saw today. more on that coming up. >> pam: happening right now. san francisco city crews have been busy since early this morning. just trying to get trees out of the way. kron 4's j.r stone is following the story and has more on the cleanup effort. >> reporter: right now great highway is sloat.

this is only 13 m.p.h. wind speed. however, it has been extensive. just to give you an idea of high and 6 ft. 5 in.. these tower over me. and notice these routes are sticking out of the ground. it this city park alone at least three trees. 70 ft. high came down. work crews spent the entire day using chain saws and heavy machinery. baseball teams have been transferred to a different location. in san francisco, 75 trees came down. in 40 different

locations. out here, we can see that damage. a majority of the cleanup is done but there is still minor in the next couple of days. in san francisco, j.r. stone, kron 4 news. >> we have had dramatic video. this is the great highway between a 75 mph that jacqueline mentioned. it is closed between lincoln and sloat. the sand, and it is always an issue. the construction and fencing and the blowing. it is likely that this will remain closed for up the night. and in the east bay this large tree lost a huge branch. it came crashing down. this is in

pleasant hill. nearly 70 ft. and blocked the road. they had to get a chain saw to get it out of there. and in san francisco. portrero the right people to clear it and get traffic moving again. the home mentioned some damage and the roof busted on that honda. and take a look at golden gate bridge with fierce winter storms. they had to use a chain saw to topple babbittry. topple factory. tope ridgeview drive in pleasant hill. the part of the tree that

fell was almost 70 feet.it blocked the road.crews used a chainsaw to break it up and remove it. in san francisco's.another potrero. the tree split in three. on the road.on a home. and on the sidewalk. the home did suffer some damage. down at golden gate park. it was leaning after the fierce wind storm. officials used a chain saw to help get it down the rest of the way. record setting winds making for a very eventful monday across the bay area. new tonight at 8-- rising crime has one city in the east bay considering installing cameras throughout its neighborhoods. kron 4's dan kerman has more on piedmont's plans to fight crime. with residential and auto burglaries on the upswing, the city of piedmont is considering installing cameras at a dozen locations throughout the city allowing police to capture license plates of every car that crosses the border from oakland and enters piedmont piedmont police chief rikki goede says it will help officers after a crime is committed. >> i think every bit helps. >> i think it is a good idea to put the cameras and piedmont. and it is a message that we are taking steps to protect.

three consecutive terms. she was 87 years old. >> the pentagon had planned to test one of its minuteman three ballistic missile tomorrow. the launch from vandenberg air force base, cancelled. officials say they don't want to do anything to increase tensions with north korea. the north koreans, on the other hand, are doing everything they can to keep the u=s and south korea on edge. the latest video shows north korean dog handlers unleashing a pack of snarling german shepherds on an effigy of south korea's defense minister. the north also pulled all 50=thousand workers from a joint industrial complex. the one=time symbol of north=south cooperation generated billions in revenue, but it also brought north korean workers into contact with the outside world. the north has moved its most powerful ballistic missiles to launch sites on the east coast.

support universal background checks for guns but polls show slipping support for major gun restrictions or outlawing all guns: from 52 percent in a december cnn/orc poll in the days after the newtown shooting to 43 percent in mid-march. there are hints of talks on a capitol hill compromise , but on the record, there's this: kentucky senator rand paul and 12 colleagues sent a letter to senate majority leader harry reid monday saying they'll oppose any bill that infringes on the second amendment. the senate could take up gun control legislation this week, with an outcome less certain than the debate leading up to it. in washington, i'm emily schmidt for kron 4 news >> jacqueline: temperatures in the 60s in the '70s. it is going to stay breezy for tomorrow. not nearly as bad

>> pam: here is a little bit of good news for drivers. gas prices are inching down. according to aaa. the national average is about 3- 59 for a gallon of regular. that's down more than 30 cents from this same time last year. and what you pay at the pump depends on where you live. hawaii has the highest gas prices at 4-39 a gallon. the next highest is california at 4-02 a gallon. wyoming has some of the cheapest gas at 3-35 a gallon. here's a closer look at bay area gas prices. in san francisco. drvers are paying four-dollars-11 cents for a gallon of regular gas.. in oakland and in san jose. a gallon will cost you four dollars. >> this is the first smart phone breathalyzer. coming up gabe slate tech report next.

>> now for a look at our top stories at eight-30. powerball is here in california. today is the first you can buy a powerball ticket anywhere in the state. at kavahagh liquors in san lorenzo. people lined up to buy tickets. right now the estimated jackpot for the first drawing on wednesday night is 60-million. >> facing a rise in residential and auto burglaries, the city of piedmont is considering installing cameras at a dozen locations throughout the city to capture the license plates of those crossing from oakland into piedmont. while the police chief doesn't believe this will prevent crime, she says it will help track down suspects once crime occurs. the city council will discuss the plan at its meeting next month. >> the great highway remains closed tonight. due to strong winds. you can see large amounts of sand blowing onto the roadway.

before you bite into that big steak dinner, you might want to reconsider. no it's not just the fat that is bad for your heart. it's a red meat chemical. there is a new link between red meat and heart disease, according to a new study. researchers at cleveland clinic say a compound called carnitine makes it easier arteries. if you eat a lot of red meat and your body converts carnitine into another your risk for heart disease, heart attacks and stroke. the study is published in the journal "nature medicine." a new diet claims to help you lose weight while you it's called the overnight diet. says you can lose up to two pounds overnight. according to the author, patients lost up to nine pounds in one week after the first week on a high protein food regamin. the bottom-line is sleep. if you get enough sleep the hunger hormone. critics say there's no way to lose two pounds of fat overnight. you'd have to burn up about six or seven thousand calories. the author admits, most likely what you lose is water weight. crowded flights, tight seats, costly tickets. be. but it turns out - airline quality is getting bettera new study from wichita state university and purdue university says airline performance in 2012 was the second-best, ever. the airline that's on-time the most? hawaiian airlines. no surprise there. it's usually on top because so it's rarely delayed for snowstorms or blizzards.
