ends labor day at sleep train. good evening. developing news out of union city tonight. a man is dead after a confrontation with the union city police. he was firing a shotgun in a residential neighborhood. after being surgery rounded by police, he refused to -- after being surrounded by police, he refused to put his gun down. >> reporter: a man was in the middle of a street firing from a shotgun. calls from concerned neighbors came in and, within a minute, police showed up. the police commander says the

suspect may have come out of a house, and there was multiple weapons found at the scene. >> immediately the man confronted the officers. he refused to listen to commands. there was a confrontation. our officers feared for their lives and the community. they fired their weapons and he was shot and pronounced deceased. >> reporter: following the department's policy after a police-involved shooting, the officers will be placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. a severe traffic alert is in on southbound 280 in san jose.

the center and right lanes are blocked by an accident there. drivers should expect delays and use alternate roots. president wants to use military force against syria. >> reporter: saturday afternoon the president says he believes the evidence will show that syria used chemical weapons. >> what message will we send if a dictate ter can gas hundreds of children to death in plain sight and pay no price. >> reporter: the president says any action in syria would be limited.

>> this should not be open-ended. it will be limited in duration and scope. >> reporter: although he believe he can move forward without congressional approval, he wants congress to send a message to the world that we're ready to move forward as one nation. >> reporter: members from the senate and house welcomed the decision but were skeptical. >> i am very glad that the president has listened to the bipartisan calls and to go to congress and seek congressional authorization. >> i don't see where our national security is threatened, and perhaps between now and september 9, the president will have information that would allow the congress to effectively see where this danger is. >> in the coming days my administration stands ready to provide every member with the

information they need to understands what happened in syria. >> that was charles clifford reporting. congress is expected to take up the issue when they return from summer recess on september 9th. demonstrators took to the streets to protest intervening in syria. the demonstration was put on by the antiwar group. the president said this afternoon that the us should take military action in syria in alleged chemical response. here in the states and in the bay area, many people disagree. >> what gives the u.s. government the right to go into any country anywhere in the world and attack, bombs, missiles, and how does that help the people there. people are terrified.

>> the president says he will seek authorization from congress to take any military action once congress returns. now that we're halfway through the scheduled closure of the bay bridge, you may be asking how closer crews to finishing the work. >> reporter: i'm told that crews are actually ahead of schedule and that everything is going very smoothly out here so far. all of the paving has been completed at the tunnel, westbound and eastbound, and crews are continuing to clean the inside of the tunnel and they are also removing a thousand foot section of the bridge's original westbound deck, and that would allow for a connection to a temporary wooden bike pedestrian path. a permanent path willed be down by '15. in addition, crews have been

working on cleaning the span. they are replaces the bridge's lights with new led's. saturday afternoon, a spokesperson says that the crews are on the home stretch. >> it's exciting to see this bridge at this final milestone. it's an emotional moment for a lot of people that have been on this job for years, from the project managers on down to the workers out here doing the work. >> reporter: i checked with the spokesperson. he said sunday's plan will be to strike both eastbound and westbound lanes leading into the tunnel. he says just because they're ahead of schedule with work out there, don't plan on seeing an earlier opening day of that eastern span. it's still set for tuesday at 5:00 a.m. we have a weak weather system heading our way for the

weekend. you can see it in the satellite view. it's getting closer to california right now. as it gets closer to us, it will help pull up some showers over southern california and bring this moisture up into the bay year. i think it's just going to be in the form of clouds though and not any rain. there's a slight chance for some showers as we get into tomorrow evening, but it's really a slim chance right now. a live view of the golden gate. we san see into marin county, but there's low clouds out there. there's some high clouds already in place. tomorrow morning look for cloudiness, and they were clear, but high clouds will increase and by the evening there may be a couple of spotty showers. as we go into the labor day weekend, clouds left over into the morning, mostly sunny skies. i'll let you know more about the forecast for the holiday weekend and also into next week.

scammers strike again. they may have struck last night in american canyon. it happened around 7:00 p.m. when a woman dressed as an animal control worker approached a residence. what this woman is saying to get into your home. >> reporter: here is the sketch of this woman. she's a hispanic woman with blind or light-brown hair. they say she wears a uniform. on her shirt there's a patch

that says animal control, and the name of al. but sheets not there to get rid of snakes, like she claims. she's there to steal your money and jewelry. >> unlike posing as a utility worker and they can get back to you, there is a urgency for reptiles and snakes. >> reporter: it happened twice. the suspect says snakes are on the loose and she needs to set traps in your backyard to catch them. she distracts the victims outside for 30 minutes and the suspects come in and still their stuff. >> the violation they feel for having your house entered, you can't put a price on it. >> reporter: people in the neighborhood don't recognize the woman in the sketch but now tell me their sense of security is shaken. >> we have never had anything

like this before. we could leave our doors unlocked. >> police are asking people in the neighborhood where these scams took place to review their security cameras. if somebody comes to your front door saying they are there to remove snakes or trim trees, demand to see their id, and if you feel unsafe, you can always call 911. the hunt is on for an armed robbery suspect. this man on your screen robbed a couple in a post office parking lot. it happened just after midnight on tuesday. the suspects left the scene in a black four-door sedan. the massive wildfire in yosemite continues to roar. it's the fifth largest fire in the state's history and the

blaze has reached 343 square miles. containment is up to 40%. >> reporter: weather has played a major role in fighting this fire, especially the win and smoke. it usually stays like this throughout the late morning and early afternoon, very smoky. as the day progresses, small spot fire turn larger flames. >> we have fire all around us. it's slowing backing towards the subdivision. >> reporter: this chief is talking about this camp ground, about 35 miles southwest of yosemite valley. >> we're watching the fire as it comes through. it's currently coming through that timber behind us.

>> reporter: here you can barely make out the flames. firefighters feel the blames will intensify. they have cut down tree limits with a potential to return and they are ready to light a controlled burn as a last result to save the buildings in case the fire jumps the meadow. >> everybody is deployed ready to take quick action if it were to get bigger. >> a nice day today. the painted lady is looking good, even though we had fog over much of the city. there was a sea breeze. san francisco, 12 degrees cooler than what we had yesterday. a high of 65 today. yesterday was 77. i think we'll stay on the

cooler side for the next few days and the remainder of the holiday weekend. a live view of the bay bridge toll plaza. it's quiet out there, no traffic, because the bridge is closed. as we go through the rest of the evening, we'll seen the fog move into the bay. it will clear fairly quickly around eight to 9:00, but we have increasing high clouds from a weather system getting closer. that system may produce a few showers into the evening, but the latest computer models pretty much erased all of the shower activity out of the forecast, but we'll keep it in there for now just to be safe. for labor day, clouds in the morning but sunshine increasing as we get into the afternoon. it looks like another nice day with mild temperatures. but the temperatures will warm up as we go through the week. into next weekend, it will be hot.

at midnight tonight, notice not a lot in the way of fog. we see high clouds rolling up from the south where she have had lots of thunderstorms and showers in southern california. 8:00 a.m., these are high clouds and they'll be on the increase, so a mixture of clouds and sunshine for tomorrow. into the evening, this is where the forecast model is indicating a few showers, but it's taking them out for the evening, but still a slight chance will remain. a cloudy start for labor day, but sunshine by late morning and for the afternoon. temperatures tomorrow, a mixture of clouds and sun, about the same as today, look for up per 70s and low 80s with san jose topping out at 80 degrees. inland locations going up to the mid-to low 80s. bayside, 75, 76, union city,
