families trying to come to grips with the deadly rampage outside u-c santa barbara. the first three. of the seven people who were killed. were from the bay area. police say. each one was stabbed and killed by 22- year old elliot rodger. more than one dozen other people were injured. kron 4's grant lodes tells us how the college town killer. detailed his motives and deadly plans. just before his rampage. we are learning tonight that elliott rodger's father was racing from l-a to santa barbara in a frantic search for his son when the source says he heard a news report on the radio. nats. someone driving a black bmw. just like the one his son drove. was on a shooting rampage in santa barbara. nats. san luis obispo area. and two young women who were members of a campus sorority. 22- year- old katie cooper of chino hills. was just weeks away from graduating with a degree. and one of her friends - 19- year-old veronika weiss from thousand oaks. described by her family as kind and sweet- natured. but it is been christopher's father who has been the most public. about sharing his grief and anger. in addition to congress. martinez blames the national rifle association.

crews are mobilizing helicopters, bulldozers and other resources. to fight the fire. fire officials say, it started as a structure fire, before catching on in some brush. and at this point, they are not sure of what sparked the original fire. new at 11: 16- people are looking for a new place to live -- half of them children -- after a fire in oakland damaged their apartments. the fire department sent us these photographs. it was a 2- alarm fire. near trask and belvedere streets in east oakland. the fire started just before 8:15 tonight, and was knocked down before 9 o'clock. the cause is still being investigated. one person was burned in an apartment fire tonight in concord. it happened just before nine o'clock. on clayton road at pine street. firefighters brought it under control minutes later, but still don't know what caused it. developing news: southbound- interstate -280 should be back open by the time you wake up in the morning.

there's still no sign of three people missing in a massive mudslide. the slide happened late sunday. just outside the town of collbran in western colorado. the missing men live near the mudslide area. they never returned home. mesa county sheriff's officials say, the area is very unstable and difficult to search. although efforts are scheduled to resume tuesday. so far. no reports of damage to structures. in the east bay tonight, a moments of certainty.

husband is behind bars. charged with murdering his wife. kron 4's justine waldman has details on the crime. including the suspect's confession. under arrest 42 year old balvir singh. fremont police believe he strangled to death his wife.39 year old anita sid-hu. nats police found her body inside her home on royal palm drive sunday morning. police started a manhunt for the suspect after they learned he left the house with his passport. by sunday night, police captured him in milpitas even after he tried to run from the cops. police tell kron 4 singh confessed to killing his wife and other physical and digital evidence, as well as witness statements linked him to his wife's death. neighbors are stunned by the crime.

all across the bay area today, people paid their respects to the men and women who have fallen while protecting this country. kron 4's charles clifford attended a vigil at the "crosses of lafayette" war memorial -- which could become a more permanent display along highway- 24. vo now that the iraq war is over and the military is expected to withdraw from afghanistan by years end, the fate of the crosses is uncertain. the original plan was to take them down when the wars were over, but there's now strong support for creating some sort of permanent memorial. jeff heaton conceived the idea. sot we want to keep it going. we know that trying to maintain 4 thousand wooden crosses that fall down isn't realistic. we want to build a permanent memorial that the whole community can support and feel good about. ashley richards brother jamar died last year in afghanistan,

she supports building a permanent memorial. sot so that people know they are not alone. standup finally, the owners of the property here have said they also support building a permanent memorial. in lafayette, charles clifford kron 4 news. san francisco police say. a homeless man stabbed two people. after they tried to get him to stop urinating on a truck at a construction site. it happened near geary and larkin in the tenderloin. you're looking at video of the suspect. he claims he stabbed the men in self defense. a witness described what he saw. police say, one of the victims was taken to san francisco general hospital. in serious condition. the search is on for a masked gunman. who shot two people in a car in walnut creek. it happened on ygnacio valley road and oak grove. around eight p-m sunday. after a concert in concord. the gunman pulled up to their car. and starting shooting into the passenger side window. police say, the suspect was in a light colored honda sedan. one of the two people shot is still in the hospital in critical condition. firefighters were able to stop a grass fire this evening. just a few feet short of hitting the home depot in san rafael. as kron 4's alecia reid reports, this is the latest in a series of fires to come from

problematic homeless encampments in the area. firefighters spent hours battling hotspots, after outing a blaze that started about 400 feet off the road in this grassland area. the battalion chief tells us heavy winds helped ignite and spread the fire fast. spanning across 1 acre, it was heading towards home depot and target, but crews were able to stop it before it caused major damage. this area is known to have homeless encampments. people that work nearby tell us there have been a number of fires. sot - 7 in the morning there was a fire there. 2 months before that there was another fire. this is an ongoing thing. with the current drought, dried vegetation, and high winds, the fire department is very mindful of the fire danger sot - we're on the lookout to make sure this wasn't started by a cookout or a bbqer or something like that. this fire is still being investigated. the battalion chief tells us the city of san rafael has zero tolerance for camping in open spaces. alecia reid kron 4 news. to route the door tomorrow morning 50s are expected to drop the bethroughout the bay. also e
