good morning. thanks loot for joining us. happening today, the annual race kick off in less than a hour. more than 100,000 runners registered and this year they're hoping to make history and set the world record for most world records set during a road race. we're at the starting line the some of the costumes and what you can expect this morning. >> well, good morning. 103rd. i'm here on howard street. an increase in activity as we go closer and closer to the start of the race. about 50,000 people are signed
up. it starts in howard and bean street with an 8:00 start time this morning. it heads west through san francisco and popular hayes hill. it ends at ocean beach. you never know what you'll find along the coast. each costume tops the next. a very diverse group of people here followed by a farm animal. >> i love the whole experience. i get here early because it's just part of the ritual. >> thinks some people are going to bring forks and knives. >> it's possible. i've been -- well, they might just bite me. >> show me one more time, how does the turkey help? they're running expanded service today to help
accommodate both coming to beta breakers. but once you get down here it's one big party. i can't see what you've got on this morning. hopefully it's a creative costume. you can make it. this race scheduled to start about 1 hour from now. >> all right. thank you. and you know it's interesting that mike has interviewed so many people in his career but i don't think he's ever interviewed a turkey before. that's a first. a look at how the race could affect you around the city this morning. >> well, the race doesn't begin for another hour or so at 8:00 this morning. we're not seeing my major backup or delays. check out the bay bridge. it looks pretty good right now. we have very light traffic conditions heading westbound on interstate 80. do keep in mind the fremont
exit is closed. stay to your left lane and take the harrison exit this morning if you want to get into downtown san francisco. let's take a look at the bridge where you can see here very light traffic condition. getting into the city. no major problems to slow you down. in fact here's a look at the traffic maps. getting across the bay bridge. into oakland and from the north bay as well along the golden gates. things are very good right now. now, of course, getting into the city once that race begins and maneuvering around that race is going to be a mess. into a good portion of the afternoon. a lot of people want to avoid it all together. again, places will be shutdown this morning. but again, getting into the city no major problems. nothing to slow down your ride.
check our your forecast. maybe you are getting ready for beta breakers. live look at the park and we do have cloudy conditions out there. it's cloudy all across the bay area this morning. here's a look at your san francisco day planner for today. it's a cool start. 55 degrees and we're not going to really warm up a whole lot through the afternoon. only getting to 59 by 4:00 p.m. today. we'll see breezes from 5 to 15 miles an hour coming in out of the west this afternoon but again, not a whole lot of warming. in fact, expecting generally mostly cloudy conditions for today. let's break down your forecast for beta breakers. mostly cloudy as you start things off. will be mostly cloudy. temperatures in mid-50s. pretty good riding weather i would say and 10:00 still staying cool in the mid-50s by noon. i think we could see some peaks of sun, of course, that's when all the fun happens after the
race and people start to walk, stumble, just kind of hang out. hopefully keep your clothes on. it'll be a cool around. temperatures 52 in nevado. also mid-50s for pleasantton and livermore. if you're inland a little more sunshine. partly to mostly sunny conditions. if you're in the city and along the coast, i'm expecting mostly cloudy conditions. break down your highs and let you know if any warmer weather is headed this way. >> thank you. now we get to updating you on a breaking news story first told you about last night. police have arrested a suspect following a bank robbery and hostage situation. happened just before 6:00 last night in the safeway store. police chased the man to oakland where he abandoned his car and ran into an apartment
building. suspect was arrest just after 11:00 last night. once the hostage scaimed. police say all the money taken from the bank has been recovered. other big news that we're following for you this morning, police have made a second arrest in the shooting death a teenager. how the victims parents now reacting to the police investigation. >> reporter: as the memorial grows where jesse bethel high school stunt was shot to debt thursday, a police lieutenant tells kron4 that they've been working 20 hours shifts to catch the killers. police took a 16-year-old boy into custody. he was booked into the juvenile hall just hours after 19-year- old zachary dole was arrested during a traffic stop, booked on suspicionful murder. >> it makes me feel blessed that they caught him. >> the first arrest.

we're back with national news this morning. amtrak being ordered to expand use of a speed restriction system on philadelphia's northbound rails. this move follows last week's derailment that killed 8 people and injured almost 200 others. the train control system is already being used for southbound trains approaching the curve where tuesday's derailment happened. it applies the brakes if the engineer doesn't slow down a speeding train. the ntsb investigation revealed it sped up. eight people remain in criminal

as you take a look at latest video into the newroom this morning. storm chasers captured this video of a reported tornado near elmer, oklahoma last night. no reports of any injuries. tornado alley very busy. mainly in the midwest. places like chicago, st. paul, rockford, illinois. some strong thunderstorm and more tornadoes. >> they're getting more of the same. >> pretty much. >> let's take you outside. i'm going to take you -- take the weather from here. i'm going to walk back to the computer to take a look at the national picture here. and looks like we're definitely still tracking some severe
weather for parts of midwest. also extending all the way through the texas area as well. so this is a national picture and look at the midwest. you can definitely see it is really -- we're seeing some strong storms. and also illinois. you can see some severe storms from st. louis just east of the dallas area. to here's a look at your national forecast today where you can see again the threat for severe weather. it's for the middle section of the country. extends through minneapolis, chicago, milwaukee, st. louis and also through little rock. travel plans to those locations today. you're flights could be affected in the form of cancellations and delays n. our neck of the woods, very cool conditions today. cloudy skies including a live look at the bridge where we have cloudy condition and it's going to be cool.
going to be a cool day in the mid-50s. slow to warm up. only getting to 51. temperatures will peak and back into the upper 50s by 8:00. look for a southwesterly breeze. we do have some minor delays right now for arriving flights averaging just over a half an hour due to low visibility. no problems for oakland. temperatures right now the magic number is 55 from locations including the city, oakland, san jose, livermore, pleasantton, concord. you're coming in at 55 degrees. a little cooler in the north bay. santa rosa in the lower 50s. the breeze picks up in the north bay today. north bay is looking at calm winds but fairfield concord holding on so tom breezy conditions. the winds can pick up. this is where things kind of maybe get interesting. here's a look at your satellite
and radar picture. we do have some radar return there's a slight chance for a little bit of drizzle. most locations will stay dry but because of the system here, we'll stay cloudy for many parts of bay area. a look at your futurecast. this morning, widespread clouds from the north bay. this model may be overdoing it a little bit but just a slight chance for a shower in the north bay. maybe a thunderstorm up in santa rosa. points norths. most other locations will stay mostly cloudy today. peaks of sunshine today and the livermore valley but things are going to be fairly cool. 3:00 p.m. today. low 60s in union. definitely cool today. a lot of locations will be below average. farther inland 65 in concord. and 66 in livermore. for the rest of the bay area,

publicly posted this tweet on the internet using the hashtag, texas attack. now new online trips are forcing the pentagon to confront a center internet most of us never see in a place most of us have never been. the dark or deep web. the u.s -- now using the most covert part of the online world to recruit fighters share intelligence and plan real world attacks. >> everything above the water is what we would call the surface web or what can be indexed by google. below the water, that huge iceburg, that's the deep we believe. that's the part of the web that's not -- there's so much of the web that we can't just google for. >> making it tough to crack but researchers are finding portals to get inside. >> we go in a website on the

national weather. heavy wind sweeping through the midsection this weekend. wichita, kansas, saturday. the drivers having a tough time to getting through deep water. the rain part of a powerful storm system that stretches from texas to minnesota. and annie, this is something that they've been dealing with for the past couple of days and on to today as well? >> yeah. so wichita's done with the storm. they'll dry out. if you're in the upper mississippi valley southward across illinois into arkansas, can expect more scattered severe storms. tornadoes and so this is a storm that we're watching the greatest threat for severe weather is in parts of the midwest like minneapolis and also chicago. we can also see a slight risk for some severe weather for parts of texas and the mississippi valley but see this is a storm that we're watching and quite a few with it.
it'll be slowly moving to the east. chicago to traveling plans there. you may be encountering delays. in our neck of the woods we have very quiet conditions but boy, it is cool and temperatures really aren't going to warm a whole lot. a live look at the bay bridge. moving very well here for folks in the city but you will notice cloudy skies out there. tornado watches in the mid-50s for across a lot of cities this morning. our east bay planner looks like this. expect mostly cloudy conditions. staying fairly cloudy and temperatures will struggle into the low to mid-60s. by 3:00 p.m. we might have some peaks of sunshine. otherwise mostly cloudy day in store for us. 5 to 10 miles an hour. temperatures will peak at around 2:00, 3:00 in the low to mid-60s. here's your forecast for this morning. so the race beginning in just under 15 minutes at 8:00 this
morning. imping cloudy conditions. temperatures will be in the mid-50s all morning long and through the afternoon. by lunchtime we might have some peak of sunshine. 56 degrees. cool weather for our runners today. check out the radar returns just off the coast. so there's a slight chance for maybe a shower in the north bay. otherwise should be fairly quiet. temperatures now 55 in nevado. mid-50s in san jose. 52 for our friends. wind speeds should pick up this afternoon but right now calm winds for san rosa. future cast shows widespread clouds this morning. at 11:00 we could maybe see a sawr in the area but i think this model is overdoing it on the showers. i do want to mention a slight chance for some wet weather, some drizzle to the north bay for the most part.
most areas will generally see mostly cloudy conditions all day today. tornado temperatures will remain on the cool side. the highs for today at 3:00 p.m. temperature 67 in sunnyvale. our warm spot today, 69 in santa clara. looking at 54 today under mostly cloudy conditions. 62 in san bruno. upper 50s in downtown san francisco. ocean beach only 55. here's your forecast for today. playing the chicago white sox. first pitch at 1:05. mostly cloudy conditions. bring the sunglasses just in clais. low 60s are expected and 5 to 10 miles an hour. here's your storm tracker around the bay forecast. where's the heat? it ain't happening for a while.
here's a look at the next several days. we're staying in the 60s for inland spots and the bay through next week. i think on friday and saturday we'll finally get closer to average. but still below average on saturday. it's going to be a cool forecast over the next several day. marty? >> headed into that holiday weekend. >> runninger for the u.s. senate is facing some serious questions this morning. she made what some are calling a -- >> it happened during a gathering of the caucus at the state convention. lorette that sanchez was telling how she received an invitation from someone within the indian american community. i'm thinking -- indian american. the man said several people
found the gesture insensitive. it's just very undemocratic. >> sanchez's opponent was told about the gesture. >> you know, i don't know what to say to that. except that was -- that was shocking. that's shocking. >> you made a gesture as offensive. >> hey, hey. >> do you feel like you take that back? >> earlier in the day sanchez claims that she was a victim of pressure tactics from democrats who didn't want her to run. >> well, i will say there were plenty of phone calls asking me not to and try to sweeten the pot and plenty of the sort of threatening things but as i told everybody, i was not going to be pushed in or pushed out.
>> reporting. sanchez l entered to succeed retiring senator barbara boxer. this is the case of the disappearing awning. the awning on a bay area store front suddenly it's gone. here's what happened. >> you're looking at security camera footage of three men who one day showed up at 5:30 and worked hard for 23 minutes to remove the awning from two store fronts in oakland. the owner arrived, the owner arrived. >> i was a little surprised. my stroar front was pretty naked. i called up the opener and i was going to thank you for changing awnings. the owner was stunned says he didn't order a new awning. >> i didn't want to say to talk tosher lean and filed a police report. >> but wait.
who steals awnings? i mean, awnings? here's the interesting part, the work es hoed up in a marked truck with the name awning detailers on the side. maybe it was a work of awning repo man. >> did you in the pay your awning dues? >> no. our awning dues were paid. >> this just didn't add up so i started poking around and made a starring discovery. well, they wish for new awnings and it looks like they're going to get their wish granted. let me clear this up. apparently the awning removal team was supposed to remove it from the t-mobile store but took the wrong ones. awkward. so what about the missing awnings? i spoke to chris, one of the owners of awning detailers vee dwra telephone. >> we picked -- took the wrong awnings but we are going to

bay very light traffic conditions. let's go to matayo bridge. very light traffic. nothing to slow you down. this is a great news for those of you that did want to drive in. public transit the best way to go. looks very light. getting in from the north bay heading southbound. no problems this morning. and i'll take you out to the richmond bridge where a light traffic conditions as well. our traffic map where we have green sensors on the bay bridge and east bay as well. very good traffic conditions to report to you this morning i in case you do want to get in your car but again, a great way to get in and out of the city this morning and afternoon if you're going to be having fun. okay. let check out your weather for today. a live look at it and in the camera shots and also in this shot we have widespread clouds
all across the bay area. a fairly cloudy day. tough to warm things up once again. here's what's happening. break this down for you. now the race just began minutes ago at 8:00 this morning. temperatures are going to stay in the mid-50s. pretty nice weather for runners. we like it cool. i like to run once in a while. i'm not a fast runner. by lunchtime -- so i think we'll see peak of sunshine. other than that fairly cloudy throughout the afternoon. temperatures will remain in the mid-50. we'll be slow to warm up and maybe get to 59. we do have some radar returns. the question is will we see this in the bay area. the models are keeping it in the north bay. keep your eye to the sky for that. 51 in stanley city. mid-50s in san jose.
