management says its dispatch center is severely understaffed - so much so that dispatchers were begging the board of supervisors to find a way to hire more people. kron four's spencer blake spoke with dispatchers about the problems they say are costing lives. "san francisco 911."emergency dispatchers in san francisco have been answering more and more calls over the past six years.(nats)in that time, there has been a 37 percent increase in call volume."the problem, they say, is that that growth doesn't proportionally match the growth of the city."san francisco has grown by less than ten percent in that time. collectively, dispatchers are answering about a thousand ámore calls every day than they were in 2011."you have to just take the next call. and it's call after call after call."that's why unionized dispatchers demanded more help from the county board of supervisors.but it's not just the employees who feel that way.spokesman francis zamora
10:26 pm
says the department of emergency management as a whole is on the same page. "we agree - we need more dispatchers, and we need to retain our dispatchers."right now it's not uncommon for call takers to work 12-hour shifts handling tense, stressfull pleas for help."there's a lot of mandatory and volunteer overtime that's taking place. that takes a toll on people's emotional well-being and physical well-being.""we've been running like that for the past two years. so there's a lot of angry, burnt-out dispatchers on that floor." ultimately, the benchmark is to have enough dispatchers to answer 90 percent of calls in ten seconds or less.but even with approval to hire 45 new dispatchers each year,"to pass is tough. so you're looking at one third, to maybe 15 percent making it."that's why union rep burt wilson also says retention rates need to go up. keeping more experienced dispatchers on board could help reach that 90 percent benchmark by next year with the mandatory overtime.if the department reaches 160 total dispatchers it could do away with the o-t requirements the year after that.in san francisco, spencer blake, kron four news. it was a gritty win
