(justine) and jail guards are keeping a close eye on one of the suspects..tonight... thanks for joining us... i'm justine waldman...(jr stone) and i'm jr stone... both men turned themselves in after being on the run for nine days...(justine)(ots) now the two will face first degree murder charges... and will be returned to chicago for interrogation... we have learned... one of the suspects had a personal relationship with the victim.... who had been repeatedly stabbed. "the biggest mistake of my life"is what chicago police say 42-year old wyndham lathem refered to the murder of 26- year-old trenton cornell- duranleau in a video to friends and family.sot in crimes of passion which i think you can call this to see

that after 9 days on the run, lathem gave himself up late friday at the oakland federal building.arund the same time 49-year old andrew warren surrendered to the san francisco police department. the two men had been fugitives since an annoymous 911 call lead chicago police to the victims body in lathem's chicago apartment on july 27. the cosmetologist was found dead mutilated with multiple stab wounds.lathem is an associate professor at northwestern university ... and warren works for oxford university in the u-k.it appears to us marshals the suspects have friends in the bay area their surrender friday night followed negotiations with an attorney and talks with some of latham's friends.their

relationship to the victim is unclearpolice are also trying to figure out why on the day the victim was found the suspects were in wisconsin and made $1,000 donation to the lake geneva public library in the a former fbi agent has his theories..former fbi agent ross sot i could only characterize the donation as a vain attempt to make things right. (justine) lathem is being held without bail in the santa rita jail and has his first court apperance on monday morning. he is being closely watched in jail ... because he isn't doing well psychologically. warren is in the san francisco jail.. but at last check there is no information about his next court appearance. (jr stone) santa rosa police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened early this morning... it happened on west steele lane near north coast street... witnesses say they reported a man "acting erratically"... holding a knife inside a home... when police arrived to the home and they found the suspect was hiding under a bed police ordered him to

surrender multiple times but the man charged at officers with his knife... police opened fire... shooting and killing the suspect... video of the shooting was captured by officers body cameras... but police are not releasing the video... the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave. (jr stone) a murder on the penisula... and police are still looking for the gunman... this is the first homicide of the year in belmont... neighbors were scared out of bed early this morning after hearing gunshots. as kron four's philippe djegal reports... the victim did not survive his gunshot wound. (philippe) crime scene technicians with the belmont police department... zero in on an apartment on the 500 block of ralston avenue. danny all lives next door... danny all/neighbor- "i wake up and the scene is going on. there's the person's mom whose crying, 'my baby, my baby.'" police say the gunshots were reported at around 5-15 in the morning.danny all/neighbor- "somebody came into the

apartment and popped a couple of shots and killed somebody." captain patrick halleran, at this time, will only say that the victim is a man who was visiting and didn't actually live in the apartment. he says the motive behind the murder... belmont's first of the year -- is unclear.capt. patrick halleran/belmont police dept.- "it is unusual to get a shooting, uh, and it is unusual to get a homicide." when officers arrived on scene.. captain halleran says a group of people were standing outside of the apartment. he says investigators with his department and inspectors with the san mateo county district attorney's office are working with those who may have witnessed the shooting to piece together what happened. neighbor danny all says regardless of the factors that led up to the shooting...danny all/neighbor- "i feel hurt inside." he's frustrated by gun violence.danny all/neighbor- "if you have a problem with somebody, swing -- hit 'em. try to talk it out first, but don't use a gun. you can always go to the emergency room for a black eye or for a broken jaw, just, uh, let's get the guns off the streets, please." captain halleran says the gun has not been found and neither has the suspect. police have also not released a description of

past year has been filled with physical therapy and rehab for the 19-year-old as he makes plans to go off to college. tonight kron4 'ellasogomonian is live at san ramon valley high where his former teammates and rivals rallied for moral and financial support. ella how is jake? a spinal cord injury has put the former athelete in a wheelchair but he is still moving onto college in the fall using his injury as inspiration. playing football has helped jake javier get through a tough year after a spinal cord injury last summer left him unable to move from the chest down.sot: jake javier, thankful for support// "just having something like a goal to strive for i think is huge. in football it's always been to be the best i can be and in rehab it's been working toward getting back independence and just getting my life back." jake dove head first into a pool - a move that changed his life forever.sot: isabelle javier, jakes' mom// "and

will lose more than 54-thousand dollars. the exchange happened in the eigth inning of friday night's game against the los angeles angels. joyce grounded out and as he returned to the dugout he uttered several profanities at the fan. he used the anti-gay slur and challenging him to a fight. joyce says the fan origionally yelled vulgar and obscene words about him and his family. joyce has since apologized on twitter. the oakland a's will donate the 54- thousand dollars to an organization that supports the l-g-b-t-q community. they say this type of act will not be tolerated by the team. (justine) on bart, there have been at least four attacks on trains or around stations since yesterday. the latest... happened at the bay fair station around seven last night. a victim was hit in the head with an unknown metal object by a suspect. police say the attack was unprovokedand the suspect has not been caught.

yesterday three more crimes were reported. ... two car burglaries and a stolen car. as ridership of san francisco bay ferries reaches a record high, the agency that operates the boatsis adding to its fleet.kron four's spencer blake hopped aboard one of the newest ferries on the bayto spot the differences. passengers boarding this ferry in san francisco say it's one of the easiest ways to cross the bay. "'cause it's convenient - you don't have to pay for parking, you don't have to hassle with going over the bridge."perhaps that's why a record number of people - 288 thousand of them - took a ferry during the month of july. that new number is why the water emergency transportation authority, or w-e-t-a, is growing the ferry fleet. "there's a new ferry that's been on the water for less than a month and another one is expected to join the fleet by the end of august."the newest one, hydrus, carries more people than the other ferries."i was looking to show my friend around and i

discrimination... reporter michele gile (gee-lee) explains where it happened and how school officials handled the situation... transgender student nikki brar became depressed according to the lawsuit, and talked about hurting herself when she was required to wear a boys uniform at her yorba linda private school. the 8-year-old, who was born a boy named nikash, identified early on with things associated with girls.. the suit says.a few months before she enrolled in heritage oak school last summer, nikki told her mother she was a girl.but the school, the brar family alleges, discriminated against their child..refusing to allow her to be called nikki..and allegedly insisted that she be treated as a boy.kathryn eidmann/family attorney:"it's particularly offensive here that a school is telling such a young child that she can't be who she is and teaching the young children in the class that it's okay to stigmatize and bully a child for who she is."but in a statement today from heritage oaks, the school administration countered with

this:"we were communicating with the family on a consistent basis to discuss potential experts and specific accommodations (in addition to the other accommodations we had already offered, such as use of the single-unit staff bathroom, specific options as to girl's uniform clothing and girl's hairstyle, as well as ceasing to use gender groupings in physical education activities). unfortunately, these accommodations were rejected and the parents withdrew their child. in the lawsuit - nikki's parents say when she saw this picture of herself at school dressed like a boy - she tore it in half and said i hate my self.kathryn eidmann/family attorney:"and it's the law of our state that no public school in california can discriminate on the basis of gender, identity. all we're asking here is for the private school to engage in the very same conduct that is required by public schools. (justine) nikki is now enrolled in public school. nikki's parents are requesting compensation for emotional damages and civil rights violations.

(jrstone) two teens have been arrested on suspicion of starting a wildfire in sacramento county last week. 18-year-olds-- jacob place and maxwell goldsworthy-- have been accused of causing the fire that burned more than 1200 acres. teenagers say rural areas have become a popular place to party... that's concerning for fire officials who say conditions are ripe for fires. (brice bennett/cal fire): "recently we've received numerous complaints from landowners in this area so calfire law enforcement officers began a regular patrol of these rural road systems looking for suspicious activity. since then numerous citations have been issued to individuals engaged in illegal activities." homeowners are hoping other teens will learn a lesson from these arrests. place and goldsworthy are facing felony arson charges -- accused of recklessly causing a fire to forest land. (justine) over 400 firefighters had to be treated

for poison oak at the whittier and alamo fires. it's another part of the job for fire fighters on the central coast. you can get poison oak anywhere from touching the hose or gear ...to direct contact with the plant. poison oak can even seep through clothing and firefighting gear if a firefighter is sweating. fire crews say the it can hurt a lot . but you just have to push through it. (danny haynes/santa barbara county firefighter): "a lot of guys get it when you're out there in the brush, and once you get the oil it's just kind of on you and you're stuck with it."(justine) that fire fighter also says he gets poison oak on his face and in his eyes-- which will swell up. you can even get it from just inhaling it if it's burning. haynes' advice for the everyday walker or hiker - is to stay on the trail.

the kidney transplant survivors jordan has become a good friend of mine. we danced it up today. he's only 4 so i look like an oager next to him. i met a young man today by the name of tristan who was 21 and had a liver transplant at age 3. what a special day. many of these kids and their families have spent long hours in the hospital and today was a moment to enjoy life out at the park. a thank you goes out to all the doctors and nurses at ucsf children's hospital.

(justine) in yuba county... four good samaritans came to the rescue of an elderly woman trapped in her sinking car thursday. 77-year-old masako edwards was driving on a highway when she collided with a truck... causing her to veer into a lake. edwards' airbag hit her in the face and she was trapped by her seat belt. the truck driver and another man nearby --- saw her car

submerged and jumped into the lake to try to save her. when two police officers arrived... they dove in as well. the four men were able to carry edwards to the shore. she was taken to the hospital and is doing okay... (jr stone) two walnut farmers in butte county... have filed a 15-million-dollar legal claim against the state. they say february's lake oroville dam crisis flooded their land... and caused them to lose walnut trees. they claim they lost 14- million dollars in projected revenue over the next half century, along with a million dollars worth of land. jem farms and chandon ranch allege it's because state officials... ignored structural issues at the dam. (sot) "the people in our area all suffered from that...we had water up in there since may the second...it happened in february...the water actually came back two or three times on some of them."(jr stone) about 80 claims have been

filed so far against the state... in relation to the oroville dam spillway crisis. lawsuits will likely be next. (jr stone) the u.s. military has called off the search for three marines...whose aircraft crashed off australia. the military has now launched a recovery effort instead. the three went missing after their osprey aircraft crashed into the sea off the east coast of australia as they tried to land. 23 of the 26 personnel aboard the aircraft were rescued. australia's defense minister says his nation will help with the search in any way they can. (justine) president trump is now on a 17-day vacation at his new jersey golf course. as cnn's ryan nobles reports, taking time away from the white house is nothing new for presidents. but slamming them for doing it was part of this president's campaign. before becoming president, donald trump predicted that

(jr stone) half of the country is sleep deprived. that's according to a new study from the national safety council. researchers say 43-percent of people get fewer than 7-hours of sleep a night. and 97-percent of them said their exhaustion made them less attentive and more forgetful. experts say pressure on employees to work longer hours is to blame -- and that longer commutes are adding to the problem.

(justine) general motors... is recalling almost 700-thousand vehicles for a steering issues. 2014 chevrolet silverados and g-m-c sierra trucks are potentially affected. the problem is in the software that controls electric power steering assistance. it has a glitch that can cause vehicles to spontaneously lose power steering for about one second. when it is suddenly returned, drivers can lose control of the steering wheel. the national highway traffic safety administration says this is particularly dangerous when performing low-speed turns. owners can bring their vehicles to a dealer for a free software update that fixes the problem. battle with a bullet in the chest.miguel salas, the man in the truck, got one in the head -- and did not survive.we're told nelson is now home from the hospital doing "extremely well".tom roberts/las vegas metropolitan police department: "it's been a tough month for us. we had quite a few officer involved shootings over this last month. everyone of those involved somebody or a suspect trying to harm us or harm our officers."this all started when metro says officer nelson and his partner approached salas in a pickup truck because a stolen cell phone had been tracked there. this newly released body cam footage shows several minutes of them negotiating with salas, trying to get him out of the vehicle that officers say was stolen.in an instant, salas pulls a gun and starts firing.police say the man was 25 years old with a criminal history and had a second loaded gun in the truck.even for seasoned officers, watching a video like this is never easy. bobcat kitten is thriving after she was discovered one month ago.(jrstone) the kitten was found when she was just four week old on a hiking trail near sausalito.(justine) unable to find the mother's den-- park rangers handed the kitten over to a wild life rescue center in san rafael. medical staff say other then being dehydrated the kitten was in good health when she arrived at the center. the bobcat kitten has since been transfered to an off-site location where she is being raised with two other orphaned bobcats. she will be released back into the wild when she is old enough. wildlife experts wants to remind everyone that as cute as they may be-- wild animals should never be made pets.
