(pam) starting today, you can apply for a new california driver's license or i-d card.. which complies with federal standards.. and eventually you will need that new 'real i-d,' as it's called, to get through t-s-a checkpoints at airports. (steve) kron four's spencer blake is live at the concord d-m-v tonight to explain it.spencer - what's the process for getting these real i-d's? it's a lot like the way you've always gotten your license or i-d card...but the real i-d's require more documentation. ...and you have to apply for it in person. your name, you'll also need something like a marriage certificate to show why it doesn't match your birth certificate.folks at the concord d-m-v heard bits and pieces about the new cards. "there was gonna be some changes in regards to what's behind the emblems that appear on the license."she's right. you can still choose ánot to get the real i-d, and it won't affect your legal ability to drive...but the 'federal limits apply' emblem means t-s-a won't accept your i-d as valid after that 2020 deadline. "if i start traveling, i would just rather have my driver's license, ya know?"the cost of the real i-d's is the same as the non-compliant ones - 35 bucks for a driver's license and 30 bucks for an i-d card. you have almost three years to get these new cards.unlike your typical license renewals, you ámust come in to the d-m-v in person to apply.once you have a real i-d though, you can then renew it every five years either online or through the mail.live in concord, spencer blake, kron four news. "they gave me the forbearance. i was supposed to turn in the paperwork within a month. i had a company call within that month," said thompson.that company was national student aid care. thompson said she was told they are a branch of great lakes. she says they told her they could reduce her monthly payments by $50 per month.however, there was a hitch. before thompson got the forbearance she had to advance a lot of money to national student aid care. "so i gave them my account information and they took a $198.75 out of my account for july, august, september, and october," she said.thompson says those nearly $200 a month installments were never sent to great lakes."i called them, i sent them a letter, i have not received an answer. they hung up on me when i called them," she said.federal and state officials cracked down on national student aid care for "falsely promising debt relief."
