(pam) starting today, you can apply for a new california driver's license or i-d card.. which complies with federal standards.. and eventually you will need that new 'real i-d,' as it's called, to get through t-s-a checkpoints at airports. (steve) kron four's spencer blake is live at the concord d-m-v tonight to explain it.spencer - what's the process for getting these real i-d's? it's a lot like the way you've always gotten your license or i-d card...but the real i-d's require more documentation. ...and you have to apply for it in person. (pa announcement: 'now serving
b-0-9-8.')if you álove waiting in line at the d-m-v....i think it's safe to say you're in the minority.but it might be worth your while to come into an office to get your new, federally compliant i-d within the next two-and-a-half years."a real id driver license or id card or other federally-accepted document will be required to board a domestic flight, enter a military base and secure federal facilities starting on october 1, 2020."simply put, the new california i-d you can now appply for ...will finally meet the stricter i-d standards of the federal government.that means there's going to be more paperwork you have to bring in.proff of i-d would be something like a birth certificate.proof of social security number can be a social security card or a w-2 with the number on it.and something like a utility bill can prove your california residency.if you forget all this, there's an interactive checklist on the d-m-v's website."and that allows customers to choose the documents that they have, print out the list, and bring that along with them."if you've ever legally changed
your name, you'll also need something like a marriage certificate to show why it doesn't match your birth certificate.folks at the concord d-m-v heard bits and pieces about the new cards. "there was gonna be some changes in regards to what's behind the emblems that appear on the license."she's right. you can still choose ánot to get the real i-d, and it won't affect your legal ability to drive...but the 'federal limits apply' emblem means t-s-a won't accept your i-d as valid after that 2020 deadline. "if i start traveling, i would just rather have my driver's license, ya know?"the cost of the real i-d's is the same as the non-compliant ones - 35 bucks for a driver's license and 30 bucks for an i-d card. you have almost three years to get these new cards.unlike your typical license renewals, you ámust come in to the d-m-v in person to apply.once you have a real i-d though, you can then renew it every five years either online or through the mail.live in concord, spencer blake, kron four news. invent that entire experience that we take for granted today. just the fluidity of being able to touch your contacts and scroll through a list of music or have a full web browser on your phone. those are things that no manufacturer in the world was doing before apple. what a new study has uncovered is that iphones are having a profound impact on adolescent behavior.since 2007, eight, tenth and 12th graders are much more likely to say they often feel lonely and isolated. dating among high scool seniors was already on the decline ... after the iphone it dropped even faster.and kids are spending less time hanging out with friends ... witness this huge drop among tenth graders.the overall average has fallen 40 percent in the last decade.they're also less likely to get a driver's license ... less likely to get enough sleep ... even less likely to have sex. psychologist jean twangy calls it a looming mental health crisis.teens who spend five our more hours a day on electronic devices are 71 percent more likely to have at least one risk factor for suicide.and that is just one example

"twenty-eight thousand in debt. i had a little bit more at the time," she said. thompson started working two jobs to pay back the loans. but even with her husband's
income, it was tough beating back the debt and her monthly payments."i wanted the payments to be lower because i had increasing loan amounts because they were going to go up," she said.last july, she contacted her loan company, great lakes student loans, a highly reputable federal student loan servicing company. she asked if her payments could be lowered. "they gave me the forbearance. i was supposed to turn in the paperwork within a month. i had a company call within that month," said thompson.that company was national student aid care. thompson said she was told they are a branch of great lakes. she says they told her they could reduce her monthly payments by $50 per month.however, there was a hitch. before thompson got the forbearance she had to advance a lot of money to national student aid care. "so i gave them my account information and they took a $198.75 out of my account for july, august, september, and october," she said.thompson says those nearly $200 a month installments were never sent to great lakes."i called them, i sent them a letter, i have not received an answer. they hung up on me when i called them," she said.federal and state officials cracked down on national student aid care for "falsely promising debt relief." "they just, they scammed me is what they've done," she said."you should never give money upfront
waiting for money in return," said tony binkley with the better business bureau.binkley said when someone like lindsey thompson pays for a service but the company never produces any results that is a variation of what's called an "advance fee scam." "everybody promises to give you money once you give them upfront. that's something you should never do in any circumstance," binkley said. "you are going to come out on the losing end." lindsey has stopped paying the $198 a month to national student aid care. she has gotten in touch with her initial student loan servicing company. "they should contact the company they had the loan with. that number is typically on their statement. if they can't go there, go to www.studentaid.gov/repay and get some help there as well," binkley said.thompson has also contacted the federal trade commission about national student aid care."i just want my money back. that's all i want. so i can pay on my student loan," she said.
