thanks for joining us on the kron 4 morning news. i'm james fletcher.( terisa ) and i'm terisa estacio. this morning we have team coverage of the cold this morning. kron 4's will tran is live in walnut creek where temperatures are in the 30's.( james ) but first we want to start with rebecca strom who is tracking the cold in the weather center. rebecca. rebecca:blustery, cool conditions will persist over the region today with isolated to scattered showers/snow showers (higher elevations) possible along coastal areas this morning. sky conditions will clear along with subsiding winds overnight with widespread freezing temperatures likely tuesday morning. cool unsettled weather conditions are then expected through the remainder of the week and potentially into early next week as well. no major hot spots. mass transit agencies

( james ) in napa county... homeless shelters will take in more people. the hope center homeless shelter in napa... will make more beds available. and during this cold snap... homeowners should keep pets inside.... and make sure space heaters... portable generators... and fireplaces are working properly. ( terisa ) firefighters put out a one-alarm fire at a condominium complex in martinez earlier this morning. it happened in the same complex where a two-alarm fire broke out yesterday morning. today's fire happened at around 1:30 this morning at 455 eastgate lane. no one was hurt in this fire. firefighters say today's fire

was sparked by one that broke out yesterday morning. that fire was caused by an unattended pot on a kitchen stove. one firefighter was injured in yesterday's fire. ( terisa ) there were two attacks in just two nights at the ashby bart station in berkeley. one man said he was hit in the head in the parking lot on saturday night... police arrested four teens in connection. another man reported being punched in the head by a group of teens on friday... no arrests were made in that case. we spoke to riders who said they will now be more cautious walking around the station. ( terisa ) police have not said if they believe the two attacks this weekend were related. ( james ) berkeley police say in the last two and a half months... criminals have stolen more than two dozen electronics near the cal campus. so... officers

set-up an undercover police sting. on sunday night... berkeley police were at cafe strada on college avenue. a place kron 4 has been to before covering laptop thefts. police say undercover officers watched 6 thieves run in... steal 2 laptops... jump in a car and drive away. patrol officers caught the thieves just a few blocks away. police plan to add more undercover officers at popular cafes. ( james ) also in berkeley... a man was hit in the back of the head and robbed at people's park. this happened thursday night. police say a man hit the victim with an object... took his wallet and ran off. the victim did suffer a cut to his head. so far... no arrests have been made. ( james ) police are investigating two deaths inside a fremont home. police were making a welfare check when they looked through a window of the home and saw the bodies of a woman and a dog. officers also found

the body of a man inside the home. police say a gun was found near one of the victims. neighbors believe the shooting happened on friday afternoon. they say they heard an argument before hearing gunshots. ( james ) scary moments in the south bay... when a plane landed on highway 101. this photo was sent to us by joshua miller. it happened in the area of san martin in santa clara county just after sunday morning. the small plane was trying to land at a nearby airport but couldn't make it. fortunately... the plane made a safe landing on the shoulder of the highway and while there were major delays... no one was hurt. ( terisa ) in the north bay... police are investigating a carjacking... and fire. these are the photos of the van after two people stole it... and set it on fire in santa rosa. police say two men robbed the victim at gunpoint near west third street and dutton avenue. after the victim called 9- 1-1... police got a call about a van on fire. turns

out... it was the same van. the sonoma county alliance is offering a 25-hundred dollar reward for information that leads to an arrest. ( terisa ) sideshows have become all too common in oakland... but they have now reached the north bay. police say about100 cars gathered late saturday night in santa rosa. just before midnight... c-h-p officers and santa rosa police saw several cars they believed to be involved in sideshow activity. it took the officers hours to track down all the people involved.. in all.. 49 traffic citations were issued, three cars were impounded and two arrests were made. ( terisa ) a redwood city man is arrested for crashing into another car while driving drunk. it happened saturday morning on westborough boulevard near 280 in south san francisco. authorities say esteban figueroa crashed into another car. after failing a field sobriety test... figueroa was arrested. the two people in the other car were taken to the hospital. ( james ) national news...

students in florida are taking action following wednesday's mass shooting. they want gun control. 17-people were killed in parkland. later this week... a group of students is heading to tallahassee to speak with state legislators. and a town hall meeting is set for wednesday with florida senators marco rubio and bill nelson. ( james ) this movement already has events set for next month. on march 14th... women's march organizers will have a national school walkout to protest gun violence. ten days later there will be a march on washington d-c. parkland students -- some who aren't old enough to vote -- will push for stronger gun legislation. ( james ) president trump

will host a listening session on school safety this wednesday. he will meet with students and teachers... although it's unclear if anyone from parkland will be there. some parkland students are outraged at president trump's response to the massacre... including his tweets on saturday in which he slammed the fbi... claiming it failed to stop the shooter because it was spending too much time investigating russian collusion in the last election. one student responded to the president's tweet by saying, quote: "my friends were brutally murdered and you have the nerve to make this about russia. i can not believe this." in the last hour... president trump said he is in favor of improving the federal background check system for gun purchases. ( terisa ) in response to the florida school shooting last week... a group of moms in sausalito came together to do something about gun violence on saturday. "moms demand action" says they plan to work with other anti gun violence groups across the country. they want to vote out politicians that don't support what they believe are sensible gun safety measures.

( terisa ) a spokesperson for "moms demand action" told us they have seen more interest in their group since the florida shooting. they gained around 100 new members in just two days last week. ( terisa ) a 2-point-9 magnitude earthqauke hit contra costa county early this morning... it struck just before 1 a-m in the unincorporated community of diablo, near danville. the quake's depth was around 4 and a half miles. ( james ) happening today... it is the first ever black history month parade in san francisco. the parade will leave from the doctor martin luther king pool on third street and carroll avenue. it will travel to the bay view opera house. and then there will be a celebration featuring food and cultural celebrations. the parade starts this morning at 10 a-m. weekend for the woman who was stabbed and left for dead along the side of the road in livermore last week. family and friends gathered on saturday to remember lizette cuesta. cuesta was murderd last week. but she was able to lead police to the suspects before she died. candles were lit and pictures were displayed at saturday's vigil in tracy. her family talked about the support they have received since her death. ( james ) the two people accused of stabbing cuesta have not entered pleas yet. police say the two suspects were friends with cuesta and they all worked at a carl's junior in tracy together. ( terisa ) today is

president's day and it falls on an anniversary that japanese americans remember solemnly. february 19th, 1942 was the day f-d-r signed an executive order -- allowing the round-up and internment of japanese americans during the height of world war two. in san francisco... a candle light cermony was held in honor of those affected by the u-s government's internment of japanese americans. it happened during world war two when united states officials... forced those of japanese decent to relocate... and be jailed in camps throughout the west. performers and speakers honored those who were lost... and those who survived during that era. ( terisa ) the day of remembrance ended with the group carrying candles on a procession through japan town. ( james ) members of

congress are trying to get around environmental regulations that they say are getting in the way of border patrol operations. during a trip to the us-mexico border -- congressman bruce westerman from arkansas says he saw first hand the struggles of border patrol agents. he says environmental regulations block access to remote areas making it difficult to prevent illegal border crossings. ( james ) westerman is working to add an amendment to a house immigration bill to construct new access roads in remote areas along to border. he also wants to fast track approval of border patrol actions like filling in smuggling tunnels that require environmental review. environmentalists say the regulations protect people and natural resources in borderlands and they should not be sidestepped. andrew spencer has the latest. a student described geography teacher scott beigel as her hero.she says he saved her life, just before he was shot and killed outside the door of his classroom at marjory stoneman douglas high school. kelsey friend, survived school shooting: "...was an amazing person, and i am alive today because of him."beigel's loved ones gathered for his funeral, sunday, at a synagogue in boca raton.the memorials and funerals this weekend have helped a community grieve in the wake of a senseless tragedy.woman at memorial: "we shouldn't have to be going through this, and... no community should ever be going through this."fred guttenberg, father of jamie guttenberg: "i... i don't know what i do next."preparing to bury 14-year-old jamie guttenberg on sunday, it was her father who made an impassioned plea to kids across the country just a few days ago.fred guttenberg, father of jamie guttenberg: "when you look at us parents like we are crazy, like we are trying too hard to protect you..."fred guttenberg, father of jamie guttenberg: "...just remember it's because we love you, and we never want to go through the tragedy of losing you." cameron kasky, shooting survivor: "you're either with us or against us."meanwhile, a group of students who survived

the shooting are calling on others across the country to march on washington next month, to push for gun control legislation.cameron kasky, shooting survivor: "we've been hearing a lot that this is not the time to talk about gun control, and we can respect that. we've lost people. it's important to mourn. here's a time to talk about gun control: march 24."i'm andrew spencer, reporting ( james ) a prospect with the oakland a's is raising funds in support of one of the school shooting victims in florida. jesus luzardo is an a's minor leaguie pitcher. he went to school where wednesday's shooting happened. he is now raising money in the name of his former athletic director chris hixon. hixon was killed as he led students to safety during the shooting. so far... luzardo has raised more than 56- hundred dollars towards a college fund in hixon's name.

( terisa ) alameda county firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that started at a commercial unit and spread to three other business. a driver on interstate 8-80 captured this video of the fire. it started early sunday morning in san leandro... when firefighters arrived, they found a warehouse unit that was completely engulfed by flames. the fire had also spread to three other adjacent units... the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time and remains under investigation. ( terisa ) take a look at this... a car crashes into a insurance building in concord. this happened early sunday morning on clayton road near lucky drive. police say joseph bey of antioch was under the influence when the accident happened but was not injured. bey was arrested for a d-u-i. officials say no other cars were involved. ( james ) a fremont store manager was in the back of the shop when she heard a loud crash and shattering glass. a silver honda driven by an elderly man crashed into the

little ceasars on saturday. police say the man mistook his gas pedal for his break pedal. another man was doing maintenance outside ...and was pinned under the car during the crash. firefighters were able to rescue the man... and took him to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. ( james ) the elderly man was not injured in the crash... and the pizza store was able to reopen for business shortly after. ( james ) in the race to become california's next governor.... gavin newsom is getting a big endorsement. u-s senator kamala harris is supporting her fellow democrat. newsom and harris have other for decades... going back to their days in san francisco politics. newsom's top democratic opponents in the race... are ex-los angeles mayor antonio villaraigosa and state treasurer john chung. the primary is on june 5th.

( terisa ) during spring break and summer travel... here is your chance to avoid waiting in long lines at the airport. oakland international airport will be setting up a temporary enrollment center for t-s-a pre-check at the end of the month. travelers can visit terminal two starting february 26 through march ninth. the cost to enroll in pre- check is 85- dollars... and it's good for five- years. port of oakland officials say the airport is seeing its highest number of passengers in the last ten years. ( james ) the j-m smucker company says, the recall is voluntary varieties of canned gravy train, skippy, ol' roy, and kibble n' bits are being recalled.( terisa ) the company says, it's investigating how pento- barbital got into the food. this after a t-v station in washington d.c. says .. it found the drug in 60 -percent of the cans it tested.( james )

smucker said.. experts note, low levels of the drug do not pose a threat. but then added.. any level of the drug in its food is not acceptable. ( james ) drinking a couple glasses of wine or beer a night... could be the secret to living into your 90s.( terisa ) new research out of u-c irvine -- which looked at those who had lived beyond 90 -- identified modest alcohol consumption as one of five key factors linked to a long life.( james ) turns out... those who had around two glasses of beer or wine every day had an 18 percent reduced risk of premature death compared to those who didn't drink.( terisa ) also... being áslightly overweight - but not obese - also appeared to reduce the risk of early death. but only by about 3 percent. ( james ) in the south bay... a man is in the hospital with life threatening stab wounds. police say it happened at 7:30 saturday night in san jose at a restaurant near story road and mclaughlin avenue. police found a man suffering from at least one stab wound. so far... no arrests have been made. ( james ) a suspected drug dealer is arrested after police find 35-thousand dollars worth of drugs in his car. these are the drugs

found in modesto munoz's car. police say it's nine pounds of meth and a pound of heroin. the arrest happened thursday in watsonville. detectives with a drug- sniffing dog found the drugs in munoz's car. ( terisa ) a walnut creek officer is back to work this morning. last year... officer tom brown was seriously injured in an car accident... after a suspect drove head-on into his patrol car. the crash left officer brown with a crushed leg... broken hand a broken nose... and 2 broken ribs. but now... after a year and six months... he's all healed... and back to work. ( terisa ) it took 52 staples to

close the wound on officer brown's leg along with three surgeries. the suspect who hit officer brown is now in prison. ( terisa ) the n-b-a's best squared off last night in the n-b-a all star game. it was team steph taking on team lebron and this was a close one.( james ) as the third quarter came to an end... curry hits the three to give his team the lead. but then in the 4th quarter with team steph up by three... lebron james nails the three pointer to tie the game. then with 40 seconds left... team steph up by one and lebron with the lay-up. and that would prove to be the game winning basket. team lebron goes on to win 148 to 145. and after the game houston rockets head coach mike dantoni talked about how some of the warriors players were causing a little trouble on the bench during the game.

is number one at the box office... and it's a record- setter.( james ) rick damigella has a rundown of this weekend's top five films. "the 15:17 to paris" pulled in to fifth place with seven- point-seven million dollars. "jumanji: welcome to the jungle" continued its stampede with a seven-point-nine million dollar weekend. "fifty shades freed fell from first into thrid with 16-point-nine million, while "peter rabbit" held on to second place, with a hopping 17-point-three million.(nat)"black panther" easily pounced into first place with an estimated three day gross of 192-million dollars. that number marks the higest debut ever for a film opening in february, and the fifth highest of all time. "black panther" smashed the record for the biggest presidents day wekend opening, dethroning "deadpool's" previous record of 152- million. the movie also set a new benchmark for thursday night preview screenings, bringing in $25-point-two million that night alone. pundits predict "panther" is on its way to an estimated 218- million dollar debut, for the long holiday weekend. in

over the weekend for the woman who was stabbed and left for dead along the side of the road in livermore last week. family and friends gathered on saturday to remember lizette cuesta. cuesta was murderd last week. but she was able to lead police to the suspects before she died. candles were lit and pictures were displayed at saturday's vigil in tracy. her family talked about the support they have received since her death. ( james ) the two people accused of stabbing cuesta have not entered pleas yet. police say the two suspects were friends with cuesta and they all worked at a carl's junior in tracy together. ( terisa ) in national news... the u-s department of justice is appealing a temporary block against president trump's new birth control rules. an appeal was filed in a san francisco court on friday. back in december, a federal court blocked the trump administration from rolling back the birth control mandate that exists under the affordable care act. under the administrations proposed rules, employers could cite religious or moral objections to deny the coverage. but the judge said the administration failed to give enough notice before implementing the changes. ( james ) westerman is working to add an amendment to a house immigration bill to construct new access roads in remote areas along to border. he also wants to fast track approval of border patrol actions like filling in smuggling tunnels that require environmental review. environmentalists say the regulations protect people and natural resources in borderlands and they should not be sidestepped. bay... a man is in the hospital with life threatening stab wounds. police say it happened at 7:30 saturday night in san jose at a restaurant near story road and mclaughlin avenue. police found a man suffering from at least one stab wound. so far... no arrests have been made. ( james ) a suspected drug dealer is arrested after police find 35-thousand dollars worth of drugs in his car. these are the drugs found in modesto munoz's car. police say it's nine pounds of meth and a pound of heroin. the arrest happened thursday in watsonville. detectives with a drug- sniffing dog found the drugs in munoz's car. ( terisa ) in the east bay... it was an accident that could have ended his life. a man rammed officer tom brown's patrol car in the summer of 2016... leaving the walnut creek officer with severe injuries. but he battled back and returned to work full-time on friday. justine waldman was there for his triumphant return to duty. 19 months agon, walking back to his patrol car seemed

( james ) a vigil was held over the weekend for the woman who was stabbed and left for dead along the side of the road in livermore last week. family and friends gathered on saturday to remember lizette cuesta. cuesta was murderd last week. but she was able to lead police to the suspects before she died. candles were lit and pictures were displayed at saturday's vigil in tracy. her family talked about the support they have received since her death. ( james ) the two people accused of stabbing cuesta have not entered pleas yet. police say the two suspects were friends with cuesta and they all worked at a carl's junior in tracy together. ( terisa ) take a look at this... a car crashes into a insurance building in concord. this happened early sunday morning on clayton road near lucky drive. police say joseph bey of antioch was under the influence when the accident happened but was not injured. bey was arrested for a d-u-i. officials say no other cars were involved. ( james ) a fremont store manager was in the back of the shop when she heard a loud crash and shattering glass. a silver honda driven by an elderly man crashed into the little ceasars on saturday. police say the man mistook his gas pedal for his break pedal. another man was doing maintenance outside ...and was pinned under the car during the crash. firefighters were able to rescue the man... and took him to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

( terisa ) in national news... the u-s department of justice is appealing a temporary block against president trump's new birth control rules. an appeal was filed in a san francisco court on friday. back in december, a federal court blocked the trump administration from rolling back the birth control mandate that exists under the affordable care act. under the administrations proposed rules, employers could cite religious or moral objections to deny the coverage. but the judge said the administration failed to give enough notice before implementing the changes. ( james ) members of congress are trying to get around environmental regulations that they say are getting in the way of border patrol operations. during a trip to the us-mexico border -- congressman bruce westerman from arkansas says he saw first hand the struggles of border patrol agents. he says environmental regulations block access to remote areas making it difficult to prevent illegal border crossings. ( james ) westerman is working to add an

amendment to a house immigration bill to construct new access roads in remote areas along to border. he also wants to fast track approval of border patrol actions like filling in smuggling tunnels that require environmental review. environmentalists say the regulations protect people and natural resources in borderlands and they should not be sidestepped. ( james ) in the south bay... a man is in the hospital with life threatening stab wounds. police say it happened at 7:30 saturday night in san jose at a restaurant near story road and mclaughlin avenue. police found a man suffering from at least one stab wound. so far... no arrests have been made. ( james ) a suspected drug dealer is arrested after police find 35-thousand dollars worth of drugs in his car. these are the drugs found in modesto munoz's car. police say it's nine pounds of meth and a pound of heroin.

the arrest happened thursday in watsonville. detectives with a drug- sniffing dog found the drugs in munoz's car. ( terisa ) in the east bay... it was an accident that could have ended his life. a man rammed officer tom brown's patrol car in the summer of 2016... leaving the walnut creek officer with severe injuries. but he battled back and returned to work full-time on friday. justine waldman was there for his triumphant return to duty. 19 months agon, walking back to his patrol car seemed impossible for walnut creek officer tom brown, n july of 2016, a suspect he was after intentionally drove into his patrol head-on. sot my brain could think he is going to hit me but i didn't have time to move out of the waythe crash crushed his right left. it took 52 staples to close it, and three surgeries. plus he broke his left hand, nose and two ribs. sot the surgeon told me i might not be able to keep my leg because of the damage officer brown tells me, it's been a long road to recovery. without the help of his fellow officers, the community, friends and family and the titanium bolts in his leg.he would not be standing here
