((triplebox))we saw plenty of it today...you can see this aerial footage a viewer sent us of snow-capped hills in livermore.the santa cruz mountains and mount diablo also got snow...more on that in a moment.((pam/cross shot)) but first... lets check in with chief meteorologist lawrence karnow who is tracking with winter storms ahead. just how cold is it going to get overnight? lawrence karnow: it was a beautiful day

if not a little cool. highs today were in the 50s and 60s but it was sunny all the way to the coast. tonight will be another cold night with lows in the 30s and 40s. you can still see some of the snow on our mountains from yesterdays storm. and there's another storm on the way. on the radar you can see a few more showers in southern california and a little snow there too. on teh satellite we can just see the next storm putting itself together in the gulf of alaska. it will bring cold air from the arctic while tapping some very moist air from the tropics. the two will combine to bring us one of the biggest stoirms of the season. some of the wettest mountains could see 3 to 5 inches while the urban areas could see an inch or more. snow is also possible especially on friday down to 2,500 feet. we will see increasing clouds tomorrow with a chance of showers developing late in the day. it will be windy with periods of heavy rain on thursday. showers and possible thunderstorms will continue on friday with mountain snow. showers will likely linger on saturday before drying on sunday.

last night's weather system brought snow closer to home for folks in the east bay.we got several viewer emails with pictures of snow- capped mount diablo. ((pam)) kron four's spencer blake did what a lot of people did today - he drove up through the state park to get a glimpse of the snow. though there were pretty clear skies over walnut creek tuesday, the winding drive up to mount diablo had patches of still-frozen powder from the overnight snowfall."i woke up this morning and looked out my bedroom window and seen the snow and i was like, "oh my god, it's so beautiful!" "unfortunately a lot of the snow has been melting so a lot of people aren't able to see it. earlier this morning it was very pretty and a lot of people could see it from different directions."driver could go about two miles past the junction ranger station, but then..."it took us up to this dead end, unfortunately, but it's all good. as far as we can go is always a lot of

((steve/me3 vo)) we also saw some snow-capped peaks in the south bay.this was the scene at loma prieta in the santa cruz mountains..which has an elevation of 4-thousand feet. the mountain was covered in snow. much of it has melted away now but we could see some more snow by the end of the week. however..the melting snow is freezing overnight which could lead to some treacherous driving..so use caution. in the last hour... santa rosa police informed us, christan was located.. and has been reunited with his family. (pam) in the east bay... hundreds of residents were forced to shelter- in -place for a little over an hour this afternoon, when it was discovered a hazardous chemical was leaking from a nearby rail car. it happened near city park in pittsburg kron 4's dan kerman has more it was about 1230 tuesday affternoon when rail crews smelled an unknown substance in this pittsburg rail yard along north parkside drive. fire and hazmat crews were called to the scene and they determined a chemical was indeed leaking from one of the parked rail cars.sot robert marshall/contra costa co. fire 15-28"it contained a material called sodium sulfide which when it mixes with the air it emits a substance called hydrogen sulfide which smells a lot like rotten eggs. (q:how dangerous is that?) hydrogen sulfide is a pretty dangerous material in large quantity."it was at that point sirens sounded to alert people within

a quarter mile to shelter in place until they could determine just how bad the situation wassot/local resident "they blocked down all the streets which made it look like something real serious and sirens were going off. but nobody came to our house."this man says there are lots of elderly people including his mother who live on this street. he wishes police had gone door to door so they knew more than just a siren was going off. but just after 3 pm the shelter in place was called off.sot robert marshall/contra costa co. fire "it turned out that there was very, very little material in the rail car itself so it didn't really pose a huge hazard to the public."rail crews then got in to repair a valve that is believed to be the cause of the leakstandup dan kerman/pittsburg 116-126 what authorities don't know is how long that chemical had been leaking from the train car before it was discovered. in pittsburg, dan kerman, kron4 news. in northern california since sunday.(pam) and oakland's mayor... remains right in the middle of the controversy. grant lodes is here with the latest numbers... and new reaction from both sides. (grant) immigration and customs enforcement agents say despite those 150 plus arrests the past couple days...there are more than 850 undocumented people that have evaded capture...and two of them...are believed to be living in oakland. the mayor of that city, libby schaaf...made national headlines saturday night when she gave a heads up... that the raids were likely imminent. tonight...she just released a statement...saying in part...quote..."i do not regret sharing this information. it is oakland's legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws. we believe our community is safer when families stay together."== meanwhile, the deputy director of ice tonight is calling schaaf's actions and oakland's sacturary status...reckless and irresponsible, claiming she put his agents in more

the d-m-v has given the green light to fully driverless cars for california roads.the new guidelines laid out .... will allow companies like google, uber, and waymo .. to test their autonomous vehicles 'without' safety drivers in the car. mocked during his presidential campaign ... has ruled in the administration's favor, on a challenge to building a border wall on the u-s - mexico border. u.s. district judge gonzalo curiel, denied claims by the state of california and advocacy groups , that the federal government is overstepping its bounds with the border wall proposal. third victim... whose name has not been released... suffered injuries not considered life- threatening. today police identified the victim in concord's first homicide of the year. 53 year- old daniel quast died last friday... after he was stabbed at a mobile home park on lodge drive. investigators believe that quast was stabbed during an altercation .((fsc)) police arrested 41-year-old eric martinez in pittsburg later that day. contra costa county prosecutors have charged martinez with murder, use of a deadly weapon and for violating his probation. carolina, a man who used facebook live to identify drug dealers in his small town was murdered on camera.(pam) the suspected killer was one of the people the victim named. kron four's catherine heenan show us the shocking crime. nat bring my phone backjust minutes before his murder, prentis robinson dropped by the wingate north carolina police department to report his phone had been stolen. wanted to do something about it.. they opted for surgery to push back her protruding ears. the doctor who perfomred the surgery says, when it comes to correcting an issue that is prompting bullying, the younger the patient is.. the better."we like to treat these children before the enter school. so it's not uncommon that i'm doing 4 or 5 year olds. and the reason is bullying, or peer pressure it's been shown to psychologically to have the ability to affect their self esteem or body image for the rest of their life."of their life." bella had the surgery in december... she says, since then she is much happier and the bullying has stopped. it turns out.. there is a school district in his state... where employees are allowed to carry guns. teachers themselves are not armed at yakima county's toppenish high school... but some staff members and administrators are allowed to carry a concealed weapon.the superintendent says, in the wake of the massacre at sandy hook , the school board approved the training and arming of administrative staff."i'm not willing to put myself of anybody that is potentially here or specially my kids at risk." there are now 19 staffers covering the districts 6 schools, trained to defend against active shooters, walking among the kids with concealed weapons. like these... a new study shows e-cigarettes can potentially release significant amounts of toxic metals in its vapors....which users inhale. including unsafe levels of lead, chromium, manganese and nickel. a government study also found nearly 36 percent of 12th graders have tried some form of vaping in 20-17. (steve) a new study shows a revealing rise in the number of teens either sending or receiving sexually explicit texts. the study shows that one in seven teenagers aged 12 to 17 is sexting... and that one in four has been sent a sexually explicit message of some kind... the biggest concern is the possibility of photos or messages being spread to other people. researchers say sexting can cause severe emotional distress -- especially for pre-teens. the study recommends that age- specific information on sexting should be part of sex education.
