( pam ) it has now been about 72 -hours since that horrifying crash on interstate -880 in fremont which took the lives of two girls and the woman.. who was raising them. (ken) to santa cruz now where the sheriff's office is trying to make sense of a stolen car investigation that escalated into an officer - involved shooting.(pam) kron four's rob fladeoe has details from santa cruz. rob fladeboe/santa cruz "....details emerging here at the santa cruz sheriff's office this afternoon paint a picture of a chaotic scene where a suspect slipped her handcuffs, got behind the wheel of a deputies vehicle and tried to run him down before she was shot by another deputya pair of patrol cars, one with it's windows shot out, mark the spot where the shooting occurred here at the end of the ocean street extension in santa cruz. just after 3:30 this morning,

deputies had detained a man and woman who were loading something into a suspected stolen vehicle. the suspects were handcuffed and placed in the back seat of separate patrol cars says sheriff jim hart. jim hart/santa cruz sheriff "....while the deputies were interviewing the man, the woman slipped the handcuffs, reached out the partially open window and opened the door. she then goes into the drivers seat and without warning drove the patrol car at at one deputy, striking him and damaging both patrol cars...."the sheriff describes a scene where the two deputies, one of whom is now injured, are fearing for their lives as the woman, instead of fleeing the scene, is coming after them again, driving back and forth at the deputies before she was shot. jim hart/santa cruz sheriff ".....the deputy who had not been injured by the vehicle fired multiple times at the woman to stop the assault. she was hit three times in the chest and the stomach..." the woman survived, was life-flighted to an un-named hospital and underwent surgery. her condition is unknown. the deputy was treated and released. the sheriff offered no details about how the woman slipped her cuffs or whether the deputies failed to properly secure her in the patrol car. the shooting occurred in an area where the sheriff's office has received numerous complaints about drug use and

sausalito will tow the giant carcass to angel island so scientists can perform a necropsy. right now officials are trying to figure out if the whale found today is the same one seen on wednesday-- draped across the bow of a large ship entering the bay. this is the fourth dead whale found in the area since march. gray whales are making their annual migration from mexico to alaska. (ken) and in marin county.. a gray whale was stranded at tennessee valley beach. these are photos from the marine mammal center. they had scientists out at the beach today ...taking measurements of the whale. no word yet on how this whale died.
