is playing out on linda mar beach in pacifica.(ken) the sand at the popular surfing spot is littered with thousands of jellyfish. kron4's maureen kelly talked to a local expert about why this is happening. beachgoers need to watch where they step on the sand of linda mar beach right now.because these little gelantinous critters are everywhere. surfers say there are even more out in the water. they're all over the beach and there tons in the water you can't paddle without hitting 10 jellyfish they're everywhere people who came out here to cool off from the inland heat are marvelling at the sight. it's a little freaky and a little exciting at the same time this mom and her budding scientist have collected some to discent them and learn more about the sea eatures. i think it's kind of sad because all them died also but also very interesting the executive director of marine science institute says these are moon jellies...which are very common around the world.
10:16 pm
they can travel in the millions in groups referred to as blooms. but having so many blown up on shore here is not common. she can only remember it happening a few times this century. she says it's natural phenomemon that has nothing to do with global warming. because jellies are not swimmers like fish didn't they can't swim against the current so they just float so when you get the onshore occurrence and the onshore winds combining you get these blooms of jellies and i'm sure they can't swimo get away biggest get loaded onto the beach the good news is that this is a very benign species of jellyfish...they don't have the kind of toxins in their tentalces that will cause severe pain if they sting you out in the water....in fact most people who get stung may not even feel it.maureen kelly kron4 news. 10:18 pm
steam that's created as the lava hits the ocean and look which direction the wind is going back on shore creating potentially more air quality issues for the people in this area. now because the danger of this laze, there are marine restrictions in this area. we have to stay about 100 yards offshore. other boats have to stay much further than that. but the real story is actually beyond our vantage point in the leilani estates neighborhood surrounding it where old fissures have reactivated sending new lava into the sky at some points shooting 200 feet up into the air and sending lava onto parts of streets that simply have not seen it before. there have been more (ken) a live look outside tonight... much cooler weather to the entire bay area by tomorrow. it's quiet on the doppler now but we could see some showers over the mountains the next few days. on the satellite image you can see a low pressure system off the coast. much cooler air will sweep in from the gulf of alaska and drop some temperatures more than 20 degrees compared to todays highs. so tomorrow we will see most highs in the 50s and 60s with a few low 70s well inland. it will also be windy at times making it feel even cooler. it will be even cooler on thursday with the warmest temperatures in the upper 60s. high pressure then begins to build in and temperatuers start to warm on friday. the weekend looks beautiful with highs warming above normal again.
