( robin ) in the east bay ... investigators identified the body found at a landfill in livermore ... as 23-year-old karina banta of hayward. here are pictures of her. the alameda county sheriff's office says they've had interactions with her in the past ... and she had a history of mental illness and sustance abuse. deputies now believe her death may have been the result of an accident or overdose and not a homicide.

( james ) new this morning ...' a man is behind bars ... accused of fatally stabbing a 61-year-old woman in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. the stabbing happened wednesday ... just before noon in the area of ellis and leavenworth streets. the victim ... veronica soliz, died at the hospital. police say 49-year-old arthur finch was arrested roughly 20 minutes after the attack. they say he also injured a man who tried to intervene in stabbing. ( james ) in pleasanton ... police are trying to find the driver who hit a pedestrian as they tried to cross the street. this is surveillance video of the truck as it hit the pedestrian. it happened two weeks

ago at the intersection of tom burnett lane and johnson drive. police say the driver stopped at the scene and provided information that was later determined to be false. the driver was last seen walking into a nearby security controlled building ... right across the street from where the collision happened. ( robin ) a teenager is in critical condition ... after a car runs him over on the streets of oakland. this is video of the 14-year-old boy ... after the collision.he was hit near the fruitvale bart station on wednesday. police say the driver's car dragged the teen for four blocks down the street. < this is a little kid in pain obvi broken legs deep wounds to his skin that is what is uncon to me>( robin ) oakland police believe the people responsible for hurting the teenager are in this video. there is a reward for any

( robin ) another update we want to share with you this morning --- a six- year old oakland girl hit by celebratory gunfire early on new year's day is improving. she is in stable condition, but comes in and out of consciousness. the incident happened on the 9600- block of thermal street in east oakland, just before 2 - in the morning, on new years day. the bullet will remain in the girl's head ... as doctors say, it would be too dangerous to remove. however, police say, without that piece of evidence ... it will be challenging to figure out who fired the gun. ( james ) in the south bay ... police arrested a man accused of sexual assault. here is the suspect ... 43-year-old sharwian bobian, a transient. sheriff's deputies say the female victim had been helping bobian over the past several months as he lived on the streets. then on wednesday ... the victim visited him on llagas avenue ... to drop off food and supplies. according to

investigators ... the victim says she was then raped by bobian. he was booked in to santa clara county jail. ( james ) the east bay regional park district police are looking for help in identifying the suspect of an aggravated assault. it happened yesterday morning just before 10-30 ... at the chabot regional park. a female jogger says, she had to defend herself against a dog attack ..by using pepper spray.. she was then approached by the dogs owner on the goldenrod trail. the female assailant attacked and punched the victim several times. as the victim attempted to push off the attacker.. she was bitten on her forearm by the suspect. police say, the attacker had two dogs. (robin) coming up ... people lined up for hours for the chance of getting a ticket to steph curry's party tonight. oakland's homicide rate is at a nearly 20- year low. city officials say its all due in part to a change in tactics. kron 4's maureen kelly reports. overall major crimes were down 11 percent in 2018 from the year before in oakland....mayo r libby schaaf saying the downward trend for homicides and shootings has been happening for some time. this represents an unprecedented six-year reduction in homicides an injury shootings combined six consecutive years that is unprecedented68 people were murdered last year....the homicide rate being the lowest in nearly two decades.every number is a life lostthe mayor and police chief say they've been focused on making the city safer and reducing gun violence....and one tactic has been operation ceasefire...whic h has been focusing on strengthing bonds with the community...and change the way

both san francisco and oakland is seeing a downward trend ... violent crime is up in san jose. kron four's rob fladboe has a closer look at the numbers. violent crime is trending upward in what not that long ago was consistantly recognized as the safest big cty in america. (full screen graphic)new numbers released by police show violent crime was up 6 percent in 2018, driven by a 19-percent increase in robberies and a 2-percent increase in rapes. police chief eddie garcia eddie garcia/san jose police chief "....obviously, no chief is happy when the crime rate goes up like that..we need to keep our eye on the ball and continue to rebuild....."chief garcia says those numbers reflect a department still struggling to rebuild after it was decimated by an exodus of officers resulting from pension reform and austerity measures. difference but says he simply doesnt have the rsources to do that on a regular basis.... in san jose rob fladeboe kron4news (robin) a vigil and protest at bart's west oakland station forced it to shut down for a few hours last night. family and friends of sahleem tindle gathered at the bart station one year after he was fatally shot by a bart police officer. bart officials say the protestors were blocking the fair gates and it had become an unsafe situation for passengers. the station re-opened just after 7 o'clock ( james ) coming up on the kron 4 morning news... we hear from a bay area couple who are struggling in the wake of the government shutdown. ( james ) take a look at this dramatic video out of orange county. a man climbed out of his second story apartment window to escape a fire. the man's wife also jumped out of the window to safety. ( james ) the husband and wife suffered smoke inhalation. two apartment units were damaged by the fire and a dozen people are displaced. the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
