and i'm james fletcher. we're halfway through the wednesday starting off just fine. although i think today's the day that the smoke might get a little bad for yeah. when is that going to happen, john. so yes, today is the day, guys. when smoke starts to really settled back into the bay area. we've already seen that northerly wind kicking into gear. so that transport is occurring. it's going to be sitting above us this morning were spared by this lower marine layer for only the time being right along the bay smoke is gradually going to settle in likely through the day. so you'll notice more and more of that hazy impact towards the afternoon. unfortunately, as for conditions right now, we do have a little bit of low cloud cover. nothing like we saw yesterday. obviously we've got a fairly clear shot of the golden gate bridge right here. most of our winds are out of the north now and you can especially notice that right around atlas peak those northern portions of in the eastern portions of napa county where we are seeing our greatest winds, but we will be looking at breezy conditions holding especially in upper elevations into the afternoon.

this is why we have red flag warnings in upper elevations of both the east and north bay menaul northern in eastern napa counties, intel 03:00pm today after which point we should see winds and these dry winds in particular calming enough that red flag warnings will expire but the transport will have already happened to bringing that smoke from our north on into the bay area. and that's our air quality does take a hit. 50's and 60's for current temperatures with alameda oakland concord and fairfield each right now at 60 degrees talking a lot more in your forecast still to come. but first on over to rain, we go still early. so hoping for all right. traffic still. yeah, john is still early. we do have accidents out there like this one. and in fremont northbound as scotts creek road. >> but as you can see, we're not seen any delays as a result that accident because it's still early for was later on in the day. we might see more backup there. hopefully they can get that cleared off the road about 7 minutes traveling into the city this morning. 5, 1880 also moving along pretty nicely there. the

san mateo bridge a little under 13 minutes. and a richmond sandra fell commute at 8. we'll have more coming up. daryn. james, back to you. thanks a lot. rates. 5, 1, our top story, parts of the north and the east bay are under a red flag warning because of dangerous fire conditions we heard john talking about that briefly the city of concord for instance, is taking an extra step to try to protect people. >> from the threat of wildfires. and that's the story. the kron four's camila barco is on for us. >> joining us now live from concord, camilla. >> good morning. deiah james. so yeah, if you're going out for your morning run or bike drag. you want to be aware or mindful of where you're working out. the city has closed off several parts with walking trails because of these conditions that we're seeing now. if you take a look at this map. this is where the red flag warning is taking place. you'll see that you look at the areas that are affected which include the bay area. you'll see in here. you'll see parts of the north bay mountains and east bay hills also shaded into bed.

the national weather service says that the conditions are dry and windy now because of this, whether the city has closed off open spaces like a white bridge. you'll see in this video that much of the area is covered. the dry vegetation which doesn't mix well with low humidity and gusty winds. the parking lot at tree boulevard on the drive will also be closed and workers will also block off portions of the new hall park. now city leaders have talked with contra. costa county, firefighters and they determined that this move is in the best interest of the public and preserving that natural environment also to note pg and e has turned off power in several parts of the bay area to prevent any wildfires and to keep communities safe as of this morning, there are a 102 people in clayton without electricity and another 5 in pleasant help darya james, i red flag warning is in effect until 3 this afternoon. the city of concrete says that they will be reopening those

parks by that time. if that red flag warning is an extended. all right, james, back to you, ok. thanks a lot. camilla. >> well, 5. '03, happening right now. we have the threat of wildfire disaster here in the bay area is leaving hundreds of people in the dark and right now you're looking at pg, e's outage map and the areas in purple are where pg and e has intentionally shut power off to try and lower the risk of wildfires. and you can see that most of the outages are in the north bay and in the areas of sonoma and napa counties. these public safety power shut psps is as they're called, come as a red flag warning is in effect. we just talk about that for the rest of east bay hills and the north bay mountains as well. don't want any more fires and that is exactly what they're trying to. >> prevent is what's happening in el dorado county right now. there is a wildfire burning out of control to about 60 miles east of sacramento. see some pictures of it there in the big monitor. the caldor fire as it's called, has exploded in size back last

check of the ground about 30,000 acres. >> no containment as of yet this morning. at least 6,000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes. really wish attics has the latest. >> it's great to see the those might be a 1000 feet tall. >> well, that far over 4 miles away. huge flames can be seen from miles away as the caldor fire continues to burn. locals could only stop and watch as the fire was destroying what they've known as home for years, dana from jackson has taken her children to enjoy camping in the pipe. i it's scary and it's it's sad. i mean. >> our home sporadically in little towns and stuff for us on the news earlier that they've earned. you know, i'm. what about the whole forest that, you know, and also like i said, we can camp and a you

>> with all the history of others. other fires. >> so i'm worried you're in the wind. if it. >> from going like northeast 2 straight and south. >> pioneers in line rowena shaddox fox 40 news. >> oh, my gosh. and we all know what's happening with the dixie fire. it continues to burn in butte, plumas to hammer and lassen counties. it started more than a month ago and now it's burned more than 625,000 acres. it's only still 31% contained an evacuation orders remain in place for several communities in the path of the fire more than 1200 structures have already burned and the majority of those lost. we're homeless. because of the fires. let's go back to our story, which is the air quality, the bay area air quality management district issuing an air

quality advisory today because of smoke from all of the wildfires. it's not expected to exceed the federal health standard so that means there will not be a spare. the air alert in effect. but it's it's going to be bad. and if you already have compromised, you know, if you have asthma like i do. you really got to watch it. careful with that. >> the other big story that we're following this morning of course, is the coronavirus. as we keep you updated on it's surging across the state and the bay area still, in fact, due to the rising cases. san francisco now taking new measures to make sure that people get tested for covid reopening a mass vaccination site com for sara stinson live with more on that. hi, sara. >> yeah. what a throwback. san francisco re opening testing sites that we've seen before and that's including one in the soma neighborhood. they're going to be open 7 days a week handing out 500 tests per day. it's by appointment only heads up. but take a look at this

graphic is that will really show you why they're opening up a testing site yet again. and that's because we're seeing a rise in cases yet again, 230 cases on average per day. look at that. graphic. can see a spike. we're doing really well and it spikes up to 2.30 cases, 230 cases on average per day and we only know about the people who got tested there are asymptomatic people out there. have no clue that they have contracted the coronavirus. that's the reason the city needed to offer encourage testing to train curve. these numbers. testing will also help support the return of work and school for people who feel they have been exposed the testing site is located at 7th and brandon me a video of what looked like before. it's a drive-thru and walk-up testing site and test results will be available 24 to 48 hours later. pretty good. a lot of the appointments will be reserved for emergency response workers the public

can utilize it. but everyone is encouraged to test through their health provider to help out the city really important information, fully vax people get text, get should get tested. 3 to 5 days after potential exposure, even if you have no symptoms, people who did not get vaccinated should test immediately after exposure if negative they should test again. 5 to 7 days later. so we talked with doctor peter chin hong at ucsf who scribes what will make us continue to do better with this pandemic. >> they are of this. i know it's a little bit early by numbers are looking better that sort of pressing that the curve right now in some cisco and bay area. >> now he's saying optimistically, we will be doing better if we get those testing results up to me. get less people with coronavirus spreading it because we don't know. you're positive and you can spread it to others. now with this testing site opened, the city will be testing 5,000

03:00pm red flag warnings for much of the upper elevations of the north and the east bay and northern portions of solano and eastern napa counties affected by these red flag warnings. big part of that is that dry northerly wind, especially for upper elevations of the north and east bay that will be peaking. this morning. calming gradually into the afternoon. after 03:00pm. as i mentioned, we will be seeing these red flag warnings expiring part of the reason for the wind is this low pressure area that now is beginning to exit the region drying in the air from our wild fires to the north and funneling it right our direction, which is why we do have that smoke impact today. so by the afternoon, especially you're really going to notice a lot of the smoke starting to settle in. you'll definitely notice haze on the horizon and especially if you're sensitive, you're probably going to feel it as you're breathing it in now this morning we're already seeing less than ideal air quality for some parts of the bay, moderate pockets in the north bay as well as through the carquinez into the bin isa street conquered oakland

vacaville napa nevado among those areas where we are looking at some moderate air quality right now. obviously the red is still to our north. a lot of that is going to try to funnel down our direction. settling in with us come the afternoon 60's and 70's for your daytime highs in sf 60's at the coastline and 70's 80's along the bay shore today millbrae at 78 degrees for your high foster city at 79 saying carlos down through palo alto each in the low 80's with south bay temperatures in the upper 70's to mid 80's depending on where you're talking fremont at 80 degrees today. pleasanton livermore just shy of 90's with 90's returning but just barely from danville. the concord oakland, a pretty perfect 75 air quality is better right along the bay shore than it will be for inland valleys. so things to note, if you want to escape the poor air get to areas like mill valley or san francisco. where will still see some moderate conditions. but better than those further inland spots today into tomorrow, not a lot of change with our temperatures air

quality is likely to be hazy into tomorrow as well. we're not going to see a lot of changes in temperatures this weekend either with highs by saturday and sunday only peaking in the mid 80's for most inland spots. thanks for that. we have a few things going on out there that might slow some things down if they stick around. >> like this brush fire right here. just adjacent to southbound highway 17 at camden avenue. a fire crews are there trying to get that out currently they've got one lane blocked. as you can see, none of the jason highways here in the south bay have been impacted this morning. things are moving along pretty quickly. a little under 9 minutes as you head into the city. 5, 8080 moving along very nicely. there about 12 minutes for you to head across towards the peninsula as you're driving currently richmond sandra fell commute as you head to richmond under 8 minutes. 18 minutes into the city daryn, james, back to you. thanks a lot of rain that's 5.18 in the south bay. santa clara county sheriff laurie smith rejected calls from san jose's mayor to resign over her management of the county's jail system. the

board of supervisors was asked to consider launching an investigation into the sheriff's office over allegations of abuse that led to inmate deaths and injuries. sheriff smith says she will not resign and she defended her record on managing the jail system while critics say that 10's of millions of dollars spent on the jails have failed to make things right. the sheriff blames the failures on a lack of staffing. so as for the lack of the investigations. i'm fully prepared to move forward. >> and since there continues to be a lot of speculation. and certainly in france's, i welcome any and all investigations. not only did we cooperate, but we as we are continuing to make progress on their long recommendations were continuing to send updates to the auditor's. >> in fact, sheriff smith called on the fbi to get involved and insist that her office has aggressively implemented reforms and improved the system for inmates to file grievances.

>> well, the u.s. is ramping up of activations out of afghanistan as thousands of us citizens and vulnerable afghans are looking for refuge from taliban control. but they're still having trouble at the airport with nobody able to get out there. there are crowds trying to get out. krakow. martin is live in washington, d c with the latest raquel. >> good morning. well, the pentagon says their goal is to evacuate up to 9,000 people per day in these coming days. but as you mentioned, there is still issues around people getting to the airport and there's a little questions to see if the u.s. is really getting the call cooperation they need from the taliban. >> following days of chaos across afghanistan. the pentagon is accelerating evacuations of us citizens and vulnerable afghans desperate to flee taliban control right now.

after taliban fighters blocking access to the airport. the department officials warn those fleeing to seek shelter until they felt safe to travel again, a challenging security environment. safety needs to be their top priority. pentagon spokesperson. john kirby says the u.s. is in talks with the taliban to ensure access to the airport. and y would just let the results speak for themselves. but back in washington, both republicans and democrats remain skeptical of the taliban's cooperation. >> tuesday, a bipartisan group of 46 senators penned a letter to the biden administration demanding safety for afghan women left behind and we will attempt to use every measure tool and influence we have one with our international allies and partners. >> to alleviate the burden

sandra fell bridge a little under 8 minutes starting. james, back to you. all right, randi, thank you very much. 5.32 is the time. >> in the north bay also know the county employees will now be required to verify their vaccination status by september 7th the board of for the county unanimously approved those new restrictions employees who choose not to get the shot. do have the option of taking a covid test every week if that's their choice county health officials say that 80% of covid-19 vaccination or hospitalizations. >> of those 90% of icu patients are there and 99% of all deaths apparently from covid-19 were from people who were not. >> vaccinated. now this comes at sonoma county is celebrating a vaccine milestone with 80% of all eligible residents having gotten at least one dose of the pfizer or moderna vaccines. 72% of residents now are fully vaccinated and 70% of all people in the city of oakland are also fully vaccinated. mayor libby shaft made that announcement on twitter thanking healthcare workers and community leaders

for helping with the vaccination campaign. >> in the east bay, the mayors of antioch in walnut creek are calling on other mayors to follow their lead and issue vaccine mandates for all city workers as of monday, all city workers in walnut creek are now required to show proof of vaccination or get tested weekly. andy ox mayor announced a similar mandate. mayor lamar thorpe said that only 62% of antioch residents are fully vaccinated. and in just the last 2 weeks. they've seen more than 800 new coronavirus cases. >> antioch is the epicenter of the spread of the covid-19 pandemic right here right now. in my opinion, 62%. the vaccination rate is dangerously low. we can do better as the city government. if you want if we want our residents to take vaccination seriously and we must lead by example. therefore, i will be

advancing a measure that aligns with the city of walnut creek. >> in mandating covid-19 vaccinations or weekly testing for city employees contractors and volunteers. >> in walnut creek. the mayor says they saw a 5% increase in vaccinations among city workers after announcing the mandate. san francisco oakland and san jose already have similar mandates for their employees. 5.35 and researchers at stamford say that there is progress being made in getting a vaccine for school age children. stanford is one of 40 sites in the u.s. taking part in pfizer's clinical trials to evaluate the vaccine's efficacy and safety for kids who are 12 and under one researcher says that children as young as 5 could start getting vaccinated by halloween. >> target will be getting the data to the fda by the end of september. so hopefully by the end of october. if everything looks good, we should. the left october.

we're not just talking a little bit. we're talking potentially 30,000 students. that's how many there are in the unified school district in san jose. so they could be back in a couple of hours from now of course, this is a whole new world with covid-19. still lurking out there, especially the delta variant, the san jose unified school district. they were ahead of the curve compared to other school districts within the state because they were the first to require that their teachers be vaccinated and among the 2700 teachers in the unified school district. they say 9090% of them have already been vaccinated. and if they are not vaccinated, they will have to me tested twice a week to make sure that they are not walking around with covid-19. we've got a chance to track down the unified school district superintendent. here's what that person had to say about making sure that the students are safe. should they come down with covid-19. we know that the factors that we used to that covid-19 virus

have northerly winds kicked up across the region. this is upping fire danger for northern salon, own easter napa counties, upper elevations for the north and east bay these in effect until 03:00pm wind speeds are actually peaking this morning and should gradually calm a little bit later on today. as of right now, winds are definitely most noticeable in our upper elevations of the north bay and as i mentioned out of the north. so this is transporting that smoke from our northern california wildfires and pushing it towards the bay area. your smoke forecast is showing that most of this is sitting aloft this morning, but likely to settle into portions of the bay this afternoon and you are likely to notice some pockets out there with less than ideal conditions moderate this morning in nevado oakland conquered as well as vacaville napa on up to lake county and portions of areas of the southern sonoma county to most of the peninsula and south bay still hanging out just fine with good conditions this morning. you see that deep red to our north. some of that
