then in video games for generations of fans. a long and storied legacy that will undoubtedly live on after his passing. good evening, everybody. that's where we begin tonight on kron 4 news at 9. i'm grant lotus liviakis. we have team coverage on the sudden passing. i'm john madden from current and former colleagues in broadcasting coaching and much more to how he's being remembered by the sports writers reporters who covered madden during his decades long career. >> and we begin now with kron four's sports reporter kate rooney, who joins us now live from the newsroom. kate? >> hi. grand high vicky, what can you say. he was simply one of the most impactful individuals in the game of pro football and it was late this afternoon that the nfl announced maddon's unexpected passing early this morning. he was beloved throughout the game of football that perhaps especially here in the bay area as the oakland raiders head coach from 1969 to 1978 he led the team to the

conference championship in 8 of his 10 seasons and finally brought a lombardi trophy to oakland and super bowl 11. another generation of football fans. got to know matt and as a broadcaster where he served as a color analyst for every major network. and on monday night football. and he also, of course, loaned his name voice and image to the madden nfl video game franchise. one of the most popular video game franchises of all time since the nfl made the announcement. the tributes have been pouring in, you know that it is a life well lived when everyone from governor gavin newsome to dan rather to lebron james have paid tribute and we're going to have much more on this story tonight and throughout the evening. >> okay. it's amazing when you think about the impact it you know, people his age. we're kind of feel in their 30's or early 40's when he became the youngest coach in the nfl with the raiders. so they knew him. then. yeah, another generation knew him as the commentator,

you know, with all his partners from pat summerall to al michaels and he's the only person who has been. broadcasting for all 4 major networks and then the kids now know him from the video game and it's hard to put into words what he has meant to america football. certainly the most popular sport in this country and society. he certainly known internationally, especially because of the video game. there's just so much that he brought. and he's as we said, going to be remembered well beyond his passing. i think it's fair to say that he changed the way the game was played. he changed the way we watch it. >> and he changed the way people who might not even care about the actual game. play it while they're sitting on their couch with their controllers. so yeah, huge, huge impact on this game and especially in the bay area. people really love him. so he will be remembered for a very, very long time and not to mention the tele straighter. the boom. >> on thanksgiving. right. the have court actually had one,

but he also grew up in daly city played football at the college of san mateo and was a resident a pleasanton was also thinking about 1979 at santa clara coaching camp. my little brother room. but the son mike and john came to pick him up to this big shot of orange hair and was always a very great guy. he was very approachable friends and former players also weighing in on maddon's death on social media. kendra stabler, the daughter of raiders. great ken stabler tweeting heartbroken. but a saving grace is knowing my dad is reunited with his beloved coach who meant so so much to him rest in peace. coach matt and so much love for you. pro football hall of famer jerry rice calling madden a coaching and broadcasting legend while former raider and hall of fame safety. ronnie lott shared this picture with madden saying. >> r i p coach, you were a blessing to us all other corners of the sports world have been struck by maddon's passing as well. what a life. incredible figure in american

and obviously, you know, legend here in the bay area both for the resident and also, you know what he did with the raiders warriors head coach steve kerr echoing the feelings of so many yet another. >> passing of a great legend. he had a fantastic life. dan thorn kron 4 news. >> are in a place right now where the level of community spread is higher than it's ever been during the pandemic, which is requires us to do some things differently. >> our other big story tonight. the impact this omicron surge is having on a lot of people's new year's eve plans. and that includes the fireworks shows here in san francisco and at the state capitol. both of which work canceled today. yeah. real san sacramento waterfront city leaders say are blaming omicron adding they're hoping for safer conditions for. >> big groups to be able to congregate next year for new

year's. aren't we all. and today, mayor london breed canceled friday night's fireworks along the embarcadero because of the highly contagious omicron variant. the move comes after several venues already canceled private events. well, others are still moving forward with live performances and parties. so on friday, kron 4 taylor bisacky has the story. >> san francisco pull the plug on its plans for fireworks on friday canceling the new year's eve show for a second year in a row was probably the right thing to do. we're seeing. >> levels of covid spread case numbers that are higher than at any other time during the pandemic. last week we saw multiple days in a row with each day had the highest number of cases during the pandemic. breaking the record day after day, supervisor. matt haney says. >> the city's not only concerned about the ongoing surge in covid cases but also

staff shortages throughout the city. i think the decision from the city. >> to cancel this was not only about the concern of bringing everyone together at this number in the sense community spread. but it's also important for us to protect our city staff. you know, we are experiencing shortages because there are so many people were getting sick and they have to quarantine the city made the announcement on tuesday. >> days after several private venues already canceled their own events. the chapel posted on social media last week canceling its new year's eve event in announcing the closure until next week in that post, the performance venue writes in part, quote, in light of the current rising numbers of the omicron covid-19 variant outbreak. none of an abundance of caution given the daily rising numbers in the city of san francisco. we've made the precautionary decision to close the chapel until january 7th, 2022 we says cabaret in nightclub also making a precautionary decision to shut down owner. darcy drawling are posted on social media writing, quote, we are devastated to not be able to

celebrate new year's eve. and our 7th anniversary of being open with our community, especially after all we've been through at this point being while larger events in the city like the cascade concert at the bill graham civic auditorium and the i heart new year's eve event at the fort mason center are still set to happen so far the city hasn't revealed any plans to change restrictions on private events haven't heard of any further changes to capacity or. >> i'm gathering, you know, requirements. i think that this is a decision that our public health officer will make i do hope that if they do make a decision like this. they make it soon because people are. >> making plans in san francisco to their bus aqi kron 4 news covid numbers continue to rise here in california with more than 4700 people hospitalized. roughly a 1000 of those people are icu patients. the state averaging about 8600 cases a day. 79% of the eligible population is vaccinated. first, california

marking a pen dome in pandemic milestone as the first state to record more than 5 million known covid infections of course, 40 million people happen live here in the state. california's first case was confirmed in january 25th the 2020 and nearly 2 years later, more than 75,000 people have died from the virus in california. >> air bnb is updating its rules to crack down on new year's eve parties this year. you won't be able to book a one night reservation on new year's eve history of positive reviews. even 02:03am, night reservations. the company says will be closely scrutinized and there will be more restrictions overall only guests with positive rental histories will find it easy to book the company says air bnb notes that last year its crackdown on parties stopped nearly 250,000 guests from booking parties worldwide. and speaking of the new year. if

you're planning to take public transit over the holiday weekend. community is offering free rides on new year's eve just hop on bart will be running extended service late night. the free new year's eve service on muni runs from 08:00pm friday through 05:00am saturday. bart still charging full price. but will extend its closing time. the last east bay bound train running through downtown san francisco will be around one. 30 am last southbound train heading towards millbrae will be 02:10am. >> to the south bay now, santa clara county, requiring first responders who work in high-risk environments to get their booster shots. the deadline for that is january 24th. the county is also urging businesses to put in similar requirements for their employees and to ask customers to show proof of vaccination if they don't wear masks indoors health officials in santa clara county also asking people to reconsider their new year's eve plans. >> at this point with omicron.

surging the way that it i would not recommend. new year's celebrations unless they are small, small intimate gatherings is the way to go. this new year's. it's not the time to go to a large gathering. >> contra. costa county has seen its numbers of covid-19 cases. triple in the past 3 weeks. and that is why beginning tomorrow. everyone in contra, costa county will need to wear masks in public indoor settings regardless of your act vaccination status county is also implementing a vaccine booster mandate. first responders will have until january 10th to get a booster or they'll have to get tested weekly. the new requirement applies to law enforcement officers. firefighters and emergency workers. the average daily number of new cases in contra, costa county have risen 156% in the past week with an average of 313 new cases per day.

>> the omicron variant continues to cause hundreds of flight cancellations across the country, including at bay area airports as we take a live look at san francisco international tonight. so far today sfo has had 62 cancellations and at least a 134 delays. san jose's airport. 16 cancellations. 73 delays and it oakland's airport 13 flights canceled 78 flights delayed. be sure to check with your airline if you have a flight ahead of time. on the national side of things with millions of americans traveling around the holidays. the cdc is now taking steps that could keep the airline industry up and running prefers washington, dc correspondent reshad hudson breaks down how they plan to do that. >> good evening. we spoke one-on-one with doctor anthony fauci about his comments suggesting vaccine mandates for domestic air travel. >> and tonight president biden is weighing in on it. >> as the omicron variant now

accounts for most of the new infections in the u.s. the latest government guidance now says people without symptoms should isolate for just 5 days instead of 10. >> inevitably going to have more and more and more people getting infected with the omicron variant. >> white house chief medical advisor doctor anthony fauci says the decision was made to help keep the economy open people with important jobs in keeping society functioning may not be able to come to work if they're all out for a full 10 days. florida republican senator marco rubio says the updated guidance is something he had been pushing for in the middle of a worker shortage. >> a massive number workers isolated for 10 days. sick. nothing going on. >> but the rules say 10 days. this is crazy. but doctor fauci told me he wants to be clear about recent comments that seem to call for vaccine

in the north bay earlier, some of the highest peaks in the bay area could see about an inch to 3 inches of snow today into tonight and take a look at this. that's a halina in sonoma county. some the robert louis stevenson state park area right there and that's legit looking like there's also snow on mount diablo. >> in the east in contra, costa county. this is a time lapse video from the pg and e. >> alert. wildfire camera. well, earlier today wildfires not something we're going to be needing to worry about at least at this point kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here with a look at the 4 zone forecast this all that rain coming in. of course, now the snow and. >> snow on peaks around the bay area all the way down to about 500 feet. we had some reports of some snow falling in the north bay. now tonight, not going to be quite as cold for the store levels going to

rise somewhat down to about 2500 feet, but still, you can wake up tomorrow. you're going to see some snow up on the mountains so we can get those skies clear out just a little bit as we head toward the middle of the day up there now cloudy skies. you see all that snow coming through the bay area and the state, the sierra nevada just seen a ton of it up there right now. that's actually more of a problem with them right now. as are road closures up there, but around the bay area. we have the storm system come through bringing with it. the snow early on. then the temperatures warmed up during the middle of the day. the snow goes away and then more scattered showers popping up and now begin seeing things pick up again. we've got another wave of moisture coming in see more of that overnight tonight as we're going to see more of the start to move in to see that up to our north there near clearlake. we're starting to see some of the snow on some of the peaks there. they've got a winter weather advisory up. they're expecting a few inches of snow across some of the mountain peaks there. but area. temperatures going to be dropping off likely to see a little more snow. so yeah, you're right. it was cold out there cold enough for snow just cold everywhere you went fact. look at sen rose. then high today is pretty unusual.

only 44 degrees. 13 degrees below the average for this time of year. san francisco only 46. that's pretty interesting near the ocean. the water temperatures usually 10. keep the numbers up and not today. and it was just cold everywhere he went around the bay area. so you've got this cold air that is coming down not only from the gulf last you see start to get a little comment on influence here. some of that cold air from the continent rolling on down bringing those chilly temperatures and we've got another wave of moisture coming through one front going by and here comes another one for tomorrow. that will bring some more rain, especially late tonight into early tomorrow morning that looks like by tomorrow afternoon. we'll start to break up and hopefully we'll get a sight to see some of mountain tops filled with snow temperatures chilly all around right now. 42 degrees right now in livermore, 46 in cocker, 47 in san mateo. 43 in chile in san anselmo. look at saint alina at 39 degrees. so overnight tonight, the showers will

maybe couple thunderstorms real possibility. got that cold unstable air coming through into early tomorrow morning. and then we start to see some color showing up in the north bay, you start to see some of that pink and some of blue and the white that some snow being picked up by the models as a moves on through. so tomorrow. yeah. cold enough likely to see a little more snow across some of the highest mountain peaks and the scattered showers kind of tapered off by the afternoon. but we're not done by any means. we've got some more rain. in fact, a pretty significant storm coming our way for the new year. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. a sad day for the country is longtime public servant sen harry reid has passed away following a long battle with cancer. >> the democrat represented nevada in congress for 30 years serving 8 of them as majority leader. he was the longest-serving senator in nevada's history when he retired back in 2017 and well, earlier this month, the las vegas airport was renamed in his honor. reid was 82 years old. >> back here in the bay area

dollars in the 3rd quarter of this year by the end of 2021 americans are expected to and up with more than 70 billion more dollars in credit card debt experts predict credit card balances will continue rising into 2022 last year. people paid off a record amount of credit card debt in part thanks to the help of the government stimulus money. donating crypto currencies to charitable organizations went up this holiday season. more people are doing it. that's according to the crypto donation platform, the giving block the platform founded in 2018 fields donations from crypto investors to their choice of more than 1000 nonprofits such as operation smile catholic charities, usa and people for the ethical treatment of animals. the number one crypto donated by the site was syria at more than one 0.2 million dollars followed by bitcoin at more

than 885 $1000 worth. oil industry. analysts are predicting we could return oil prices as high as $100 a barrel by next year. the u.s. has an undersupply of oil for a variety of reasons, including the biden administration's canceling of pipelines drilling moratoriums as well as continued labor shortages. saudi arabia's warning global production could fall significantly, which would also drive the price of oil up. oil prices are currently sitting at about $72. a barrel. and of course that would likely lead to prices going up even more at home for gas. according to gasbuddy, the average price for a gallon of regular in the u.s. could reach $4 by this summer. the national average for a gallon was $3.29 down from down $0.13 from the peak of 3.42 on november 8th. according to aaa, the av%rage price of gas in california.

welcome back to kron 4 news at 9. we begin this half hour in the north bay where a missing person investigation involving an apple woman. >> remains open tonight after a body matching her description was found back on december 23rd. the father of spoke to his daughter several times the night that she was reported missing today. he spoke with ground forces seek monday, june. >> it's an interview you'll only see here. there's turner. dan. >> chris and i were very, very close, very close you're looking at a photo of mark mccarthy and his daughter crystal during happier times on 12/13/2021 she was reported missing in the city of napa. her friends organized multiple searches. 2 days later, a body matching her description was

3 people injured. it was a shooting rampage involving as many as 4 scenes. it all happened last night in denver, colorado. the first shooting left 2 women dead and one man injured. another man was killed in a shooting about 12 blocks away. both shootings were reported 2 hours before the officer was shot. the officer's condition is unknown at this time. we do know that 3rd shooting left 2 people dead, including the suspect police believe the shootings are connected. >> now to another big story tonight. this one out of southern california where for the first time we're hearing from the parents of the 14 year-old girl. accidently shot and killed by los angeles. police. this happened december 23rd inside a clothing store. police have released body camera video from the burlington clothing store in north hollywood officers had been called to stop a man who we said to be attacking people in the store with a bicycle chain smashing things police

started shooting and killed the suspect. 24 year-old daniel lopez. but an officer's bullet also went through a dressing room wall and hit that young girl who had been there with their mother trying on clothes. the parents of that. and tina peralta spoke with reporters today. >> doing me. so. >> look, we were together at in north hollywood. >> we were trying out close for christmas. we heard some screams. we sat down and hugged and started praying when something impacted my daughter it threw us on the floor. and she died in my arms and there was nothing i could do. to see a son, our daughter die in your arms. is one of the pains, the greatest pains and most profound pains that

any human being can imagine. >> the and their attorneys say that they want surveillance video and documentation from this investigation to be released to them. there are several investigations of the incident already underway. >> learning more tonight about a small plane crash in the san diego area that killed 4 people. this is a video of that. the faa says the learjet 35 business aircraft departed john wayne airport in orange county. the route to san diego before it went down and then elk a whole neighborhood around 7 o'clock last night you saw the home security camera footage that captured the flash. this is the devastating aftermath fiery debris field here. investigators say the plane caught fire on impact with debris, taking down several power lines. the ntsb reports the plane had been cleared for landing when it went down

finished his college career at cal poly san luis obispo then was chosen by the philadelphia eagles in the 21st round of the nfl draft in 1958. but a serious knee injury in training camp ended his professional playing career before it started while he was rehabbing however, that and got his first advanced education in football from eagles, nfl hall of fame quarterback norm, then brooklyn who spent the season with madden teaching him the nuances of the game and experience that inspired madden to go into coaching after helping correale make sdsu into one of the best small school programs in the country caught the eye of oakland raiders owner al davis who hired him as the team's linebackers coach in 1967 after helping the raiders get to super bowl 2 as an assistant madden was hired as the team's head coach in 1969 at 32 the youngest in the nfl. but finally in 1976 everything came together for madden and the raiders led by hall of

fame quarterback ken stabler and 7 other players who would later be enshrined in canton. maddon led the silver and black to a league best 13 1 record and more importantly a decisive win over their nemesis the pittsburgh steelers who had beaten them in 3 straight playoff games to earn a trip to super bowl 11 once they stamp their ticket to pasadena. no one was going to stop the raiders. and after telling the team in the locker room pre-game. this will be the single biggest event in your whole life. as long as you win, matt and his raiders dominated the minnesota vikings to win the super bowl blowing the vikings out 32 to 14. it was the first world championship in franchise history and cemented the man in the hall of fame. coaching credentials in 2006. he was inducted into the pro football hall of fame in recognition of his coaching career today. >> feels like the second time in my life. i'm being carried off. the shoulders of others. yet instead of off the field. hall of fame. has been the

>> last night on kron 4 news at night. we told you about the state's new composting laws. well, as increase tolls coming in the new year and much more. well, tonight, proffers capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala breaks down the new workplace laws going into effect across the state in the new year. >> new state laws will change some regulations for workplaces across california in january. the state's minimum wage will increase to $15 an hour for workplaces with more than 26 employees and $14 for those with less than 26 employees. in addition to the pay increase workplace safety fines will also see a boost in the new year. the state's division of occupational safety and health can penalize workplaces for each employee affected by a violation of the state's health and safety rules larger employers with multiple offices are hubs can have all of their locations penalized. if there's evidence of a pattern of violations at more than one location on workplace conduct starting in 2022

>> there it is another violent encounter on a plane. this time involving a former baywatch actress and raiders cheerleader. patricia cornwall. according to the criminal complaint cornwall was returning to her seat during a flight from tampa atlanta. but a flight attendant was blocking the aisle with a beverage cart. the flight attendant asked her to find an open seat until the service was complete. cornwall then said, quote, what am i rosa parks. 80 year-old told cornwall that her comment was inappropriate. and after a verbal exchange cornwall is seen on video here hitting the man several times in spitting on him. she is facing a year in prison and up to a $100,000 fine and check out the scary images at a utah ski resort after more than a 100 skiers had to be rescued from a chairlift. the skiers were stuck in the bitter cold for hours after a mechanical failure. this happened on christmas eve at the deer valley resort in park city.

the ski patrol used ropes to help lower the stranded skiers to the ground. you hear them cheering there. nobody was injured. >> a little closer to home. heavy snow continues to fall and lake tahoe up to 9 feet. maybe as much as 12th in some spots as fallen just over the past week. >> blanketing the area. it is epic could gorgeous snowy landscape provided. you don't have to actually get around. and that is the reason westbound 80 is still closed at this hour. eastbound 80 was closed earlier today but has since reopened. you see a eastbound 80 here at castle peak. caltrans says 80 is slow, but you can do it passenger and essential commercial vehicles with chains are now allowed through from all to to the nevada state line. you see how the progress is slow and steady. a few cars making their on eastbound 80 interstate 15

cute. >> i could barely see over there. but you still got good joke. see. >> all right. taking a live look right now at the conditions along the golden gate bridge. pretty nice out there is light traffic in the just cold but no snow on the bridge. yeah. a lot of cold temperatures around the bay area. guys. and it is just been amazing to watch. the snow has been falling down those lows. 500 feet. the north bay early on this morning that snow levels lifted somewhat to about 2500 feet. but. the sears just been getting pummeled. graham was talking about all the snow up there. here's a live look at donner and you can see occasionally some cars go by kind of gives you idea of how high the snow pack is over. donner summit because it really kind of just war for the cars as they move through. here comes a car right now. moving on by. see the snow pack taller than the car there. and that's been the case we've seen tremendous amounts of snow in december, record amounts. in for the entire month of december. some places over 1617, feet of snow. they're going to get maybe another couple feet there overnight tonight as

another storm system rolls into town. so not the best idea to head up there tonight, especially at night. the roadways very icy and you've got another storm coming in could see some more blizzard and whiteout conditions through the middle of the day tomorrow. some of that continuing in northern cplifornia as we're going to see more of that snow falling still it was going to run down about 2500 people. that's going clued parts of lake county as well. now all this has been great news for the snowpack overall december. we started out a very much concerned about this. we snow amounts only in the teens, but now running 100. 45 1% of normal to a 160% normal in the central sierra nevada and the 167 in the southern. now what's really interesting, too, as you melt that the find out what the water equivalency rate is right now, some places more than 225% of normal. that is great as we're seeing are a lot of snow and a lot of moisture content in those storms will see more on the way. in fact, overnight tonight another storm system rolls in heavy snow expected throughout the night tonight

in the great lake tahoe area all the way down into the 70 in the southern sierra nevada week. it's a little bit of a break. if you could wait. i think the roadways really going to open up as we get into thursday and friday. new year's eve and new year's day looks like a great day for traveling up there. coming back on sunday look bad. but if you're sticking around into the new year and the middle of next week. well, we've got another storm system coming. that also likely to bring some very heavy snow in the sierra nevada. so yeah, if you're traveling here we go snow up there for tomorrow. and then we're looking at dry conditions on thursday and friday. those will be the best travel days to get the high country. otherwise you're talking about a whole lot of snow for tonight. really many delays up there as well. temperatures around the bay area you're talking about some snow across the mountain peaks and some cold temperatures go along with that highs only going to be the 40's in the 50's again, we're going to watch a dry weather return to the bay area's we get into thursday and friday. new year's eve looks nice and dry same new year's day. that looks like a return to some rain. the first monday of the new year. we'll have more news
