9:02 am
was a pursing wandering around the neighborhood and near the pelosi home. we also heard from another woman, but she lives across the street from the pelosi. she knows paul well, and she says that, you know, there is security from the neighborhood and that the security guard usually sits here on scott and broadway. so that's probably how they were able to get to the home quickly and arrest the attacker. but in terms of how much paul pelosi's security have, how much security has that's unclear. we know that when nancy is in town, they have a lot of security. so stay tuned. we actually are going to hear an update from police and from the district attorney in about 25 minutes from now. of course, a lot of questions remain darya, james. but from here at the scene and lot of people waking up to this news feeling very afraid that someone is able able to walk into someone's home break-in and attack someone, especially knowing it was a attack on paul pelosi.

9:05 am
to chat with us more and it we couldn't ask for a better person to talk michael because for a time you are actually speaker pelosi's chief of staff. you know the family well, can you just tell us what's happening with her staff right now, given what you know about the inner workings when an attack like this happens. >> well, obviously they're trying to get all the information that they possibly can to relay it to the speaker on a real-time basis to some sure they are. courtney with the capitol police with the sapd and apparently the just justice department has sent a unit out here as well. we read press reports, but i think that the most important thing is to get information to her quickly as possible about the condition of people. i mean, this is terrible, horrible event. i'm glad that they're saying he's going make a full recovery all as one of the most decent, you know, really nice people you're ever going to meet a very low key. you'll all around san francisco, a seaman, the at the airport all the time our chicken joint in

north beach. so i mean, this is a and that hole is a place i've been to many times. it's beautiful home very warm. it's welcome. even and the idea it's been desecrated this way and and paul was attacked in this manner is just horrified. that i is something it is just really troubling as to why it occurred. and i guess we'll hear more about that later. wilson the home. how could someone break into a home like that? i mean, it seems like it's very secure. we found out that they have. >> neighborhood security. i know the capitol police aren't there when nancy is not there, but neighborhood security all night long, you know, and it seems like a pretty big mansion made of brick. so i breaking a window, something like that scaling it >> i mean, have my thoughts and ideas, but i'm going talk about exactly where someone might want penetrate so much so but i can can save us. i mean, anyone who is determined anyone who was decided that
9:07 am
and faith and and there's some reports coming out that said that he was targeted. yeah, i want to this to me in the home or our poll personally. but s so when is determined enough and has the resources it needs are tired. you know, anything is anything unfortunately, it's possible. i mean, this is a country that scene president assassinated every week we get see scully's, not to mention the counties where people were were just innocent. people walking by school children were shot by someone who attacked a school that is protected by people with guns. i it happens and it's just a fact of unfortunate fact of the society in which we live in right now. >> yeah, we know the home was targeted. we'll hope to find out more here at the bottom of the hour. when police to hold their press conference and maybe we'll get more insight into the motive. there are reports that the attacker put might have asked where nancy pelosi was before attacking paul. so we don't know if paul was target. we don't know.
9:08 am
maybe we'll find out next half hour. but when you were working with the speaker, when you were on her staff years ago, did you guys have conversations about security, about threats that are coming in? what was that like? >> oh, sure. i mean, the fact is probably what i was i directly chief of staff. we're going to fight for good reason. i just you know, we lived in the city were mayor and the supervisor were assassinated and we would get death threats and threat in both writing and over the over the telephone in our office a lot when we would go out into public you know, she's just an junior congressperson. the time we started and should i've seen more prominent it later on. but you know, we when we have town hall wasn't i think the second year or so, i decided that i was going to start coordinating with the u.s. apd getting started every incident at our town halls and quite frankly, i i considered myself to be sort of kurt protective detail whenever we
9:09 am
went out because i just i just did not. i suppose i have bad feeling about. and the people who we're dealing with and i would make sure that suppose myself between her and and people. but now, you know, she's got her a detail. it doesn't extend the family got a long time ago. michael, talk about the climate now. i mean, they'd. >> they said aisles and threats on. all right, congressional number. 24, i mean, i mean, basically, we're like that too. and now it's like 1020 in terms of the level level of threat and it's it's something that, you know, we're going to week. this nation has to deal with refusing deal with still people who don't believe the january state. 6 was an insurrection. people who don't believe that people were there with with with guns with bats, which she shield, you know, with flagpoles beating a beating, a police officers. you know, we have an issue and and people begin to understand what is going on out there, how to fight it. our country
9:10 am
is how how angry angry our country as we all know why this was. this could just been random violence could have been. it could have been someone who is charging them for for what they believed to be money valuables. but the fact is that. we live in we live in a climate in the country right now or access to the means of violence is easier than ever. and where people are are encouraged and brandt up more so than ever to go from 0 to 11 on a scale in terms of anger and, you know, just as an aside, guy knows what's going to happen to twitter now they're going to take all the controls off of that because, you know, repeating the echo chamber of lies and violence and hate. is a terrible part of what our country is going through right now. and i pray to god that's not what that's which contributed to what happened
9:11 am
to paul. but if it did, we're going to do with it swiftly and shoot in a very yes. important eyes are just so upset about. my friend paul is live at hospital that so it's a it's a terrible. and michael, let me just ask you, we're supposed to go to break. i know we're out of time and i'm going off script or a little bit apologize. the control room. >> i i hope, though, that they could pull up this tweet because the reaction coming in from across political lines sort of areas with what you're talking about. this is ted cruz. somebody could be more polar opposite in terms of politics from nancy pelosi. and here was his tweet moments ago saying what happened? paul pelosi last night is horrific. heidi and i are praying for him and nancy and the entire pelosi family make got protection be upon them. we can have our political differences. but violence is always wrong and unacceptable. >> so on both sides of the aisle. now this will galvanize them because, you know, they really are under attack as a politician is no matter what you got to turn down the
9:12 am
tempo. >> they got really temperature, but they didn't do it after gabby giffords. i think you would have the lease. maybe this will turn the tide because one thing i would nc pelosi is that no matter what your political beliefs are. people know that she's really decent, good human being. and they really like her as an individual may be specter. that's why she's been the leaders long as she has been. that's why she's always been known to someone from both sides of the aisle that that someone who is genuinely just a good person, maybe this might spur this. but we've every time we said this in the wake of a school shooting, i don't know. i maybe this will be the difference maker, but, you know, and i'm not going to is percent to cruise at this time, other than to say, you know, read his last sentiment. think about what else said. another context as well. maybe he can. if he applied that, you know, to january 6, upi apply that to other situations. you know, we would have that kind temperature
9:15 am

9:36 am
capitol police noted in a separate statement that the speaker was in washington, d.c., overnight with her protective detail when this attack took place. so again, there's still a lot unknown. the motive is unknown, though. the suspect is in custody, according to authorities. like i know, the speaker has several events planned for today. have you had a word from her >> office as to whether that's cancel now she heading back to the city. >> we have not heard from the speaker from the speaker directly today or from her spokesperson regarding what she's going to do and her she is scheduled to be an event that's begin event tomorrow with the vice president, kamala harris, that we have not heard of. that will be changed. our it's still going on. so right now, business as usual. but again, we're all waiting to see if we can learn more. and when we learn more about what's going on, the course how the speaker will be reactive and we wonder if it will be business as usual on the hill, which you cover because members of congress have gotten additional money. >> in the past few years for security. but this is sure to have him caught, you know, clamoring for more to protect
