we switch gears on this monday night election. even take a live look over san francisco. >> our first chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with a look at what's coming out of the sky. you know, so exciting weather. i mean, throughout the weekend we had what stuff coming through. but now we're going to get things going. we've had some lightning strikes are showing up off the coastline. may get some of that overnight tonight. so out there you see the clouds, that kind of broken out there over the bay. right now, we've seen some showers kind of moving on through. we throughout the day today. we have some sunshine. we had some showers. then things have started to pick up again. i think tonight going to be heavy overnight tonight. we'll see more rain than we've seen in the past. 24 hours coming late tonight. still some of the totals almost a half an inch, almost 4 tenths there in can feel the sun rose over a quarter of an inch, just a 10th of an inch in san francisco. oakland under a 10th and only 300's in san jose. but we're going to put together some impressive totals. i think overnight tonight we've got some showers, the possibility, some thunderstorms and some strong

gusty winds developing outside overnight tonight with another round. some heavy rainfall moving, especially late tonight, early tomorrow morning. i think that commute tomorrow. we've got to be careful. i think maybe the heaviest rainfall may have moved through, but i think you see all the water on the roadways be careful tomorrow morning. if you're driving early on the week ahead, staying very unsettled, i think through at least wednesday models are differing in the long range as we get toward this week as they often do this time of year. so right now, at least it leaves leave a chance of a couple showers over the weekend as well. here's your system. the rolling on shore. you start to see the cold, unstable air begin to move in. all of a sudden you start to see these thunderstorms popping up off the coastline. and so that's we're watching for right now. some of these storms rolling on by bringing some snow in the high country. a ton of it up there. but just off our coastline, them are seeing some thunderstorms out there. in fact, the cell that sitting out there right now producing a couple lightning strikes. that is not all that far away. in fact, that is only roughly 75 80 miles out there. they're going to 66 miles an out there

right now likely to be pushing on shore here very shortly. usually when these thunderstorms develop, those tops will start to collapse over a few minutes or so or 10 minutes or so. but still very active out there. there's plenty behind that numerous storms off the monterey bay. they're getting hit hard right now by some storms moving through there right now. a flash flood watch actually in effect until tuesday afternoon, as we're expecting some heavy rainfall to that areas that heavy focus. i think the heavier amounts of rain could move a little bit further south. all that being said, we're seeing some big-time swells moving along the coastline, 15 to 20 footers out there and some strong gusty winds, a real likelihood late tonight early tomorrow morning. maybe some 35 some 45 mile an hour gust up toward the beaches. and that go along with all else is happening out there. and you've got some cold temperatures go along with that. would be surprised if we saw a couple of snowflakes over some of the highest mountain peaks locally. but a ton of snow falling in this year. that will talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. four's your local

election headquarters and the midterm elections been talking about him for a couple years now. they are tomorrow. they are upon us and we're nearing the finish line for many races here in the bay area. >> county registrars are preparing for this big rush kron four's theresa has more now in the last minute steps. it they're going to be taking to get to the polls. >> looking at about how they 27% so far. well, that's the count so far with mail in ballots in contra costa county. while the number may appear to indicate a low turnout for tuesday's election. tommy gong, the chief deputy clerk recorder for contra costa county says he is staying upbeat, feeling great about our 152 polling places tomorrow. >> the open up bright and early 07:00am khan says if you plan to cast your ballot tomorrow, make a plan and know where you want to go. he says there is always hope for those who need it. we understand there may be other reasons why people feel the need to vote in person. for example, we

officials add, if you want your vote counted, sign it. they say that it is one of the leading reasons. ballots are rejected. also make sure it's postmarked before midnight. re can't be counted either. terry says stasio kron, 4 news. >> alameda county officials have a tool that gives voters some transparency into how things are done behind the scenes. they say cameras will be rolling in the vote processing room that will allow anyone to watch from any device during all hours of operation. alameda county supervisor keith carson says that he's proud the county registrar has been aggressive in getting people to exercise their right to vote. >> since day one, that issue of the ability to participate in the democratic process in this country has been front and center in terms of everything that it means to run this country. there's always been struggles back and forth over the years all the

way into the last elections that we've had. >> i county has provided this platform since the 2020 election and with less than 24 hours to go until the midterms tonight, we are hearing from the person in charge of overseeing the elections process statewide kron four's capitol correspondent eytan wallace spoke with california secretary of state about you need to know if you have not yet cast your ballot. plus what her office is doing to ensure. >> the election is secure. >> well, one day out, weber vows a safe election and says message to all eligible california voters is clear. don't make your voice heard. >> what we need now from you. >> it's for you to show up and vote. california. secretary of state shirley weber joining us for a one-on-one interview speaking directly to californians as we approach election day a day for what she says she and her office are prepared. we've done everything we can to make it safe, secure and convenient. convenient. she says noting about 22 million vote by mail.

ballots have gone out to registered voters statewide. in order to count the return envelope carrying the ballots must be postmarked no later than 08:00pm on election day itself, november 8th and must arrive no later than one week after that. and it's important not to forget each voter must sign the back of the return envelope. voters may also bring their ballots in person to an elections office or vote center. and as for those who did not register receive a ballot in the mail, we have same day registration, same day voting so that if you forgot to register or you move to whatever you can go in and vote provisionally. >> in california. so there's really no excuse on november, the 8th for anyone not to be able to vote, which a message to california voters about what you and your office are doing to keep this election secure? >> well, we do everything we possibly can as humanly possible to make sure that the building is secure. every machine used in any election in california is tested and retested and we tested. we have a cyber security office, a case that hinged all fronts and coming in and we take

every threat seriously. also taken seriously voter signatures, every signature on the envelope is checked. >> based on your read when you register to vote, your original signature is is is married with the signature that you put on your on the envelope of your ballot. >> and if this any discrepancy in it, then we will pull that ballot. the side. and we will also contact you about your signature. weather also wants californians to know her office will have until mid december to certify the results, meaning it could be some time until the races are called. but she says the focus right now is on you. the voter. we need you to participate in the process because i've democracy only works. >> not because we just have really sick you machines and we do that because we have really enthusiastic people. and we do. but if it works because you show up by voting and webber mines, california is if you run into any problems at all, you can call the official voter hotline at 803, 4, 5 vote. she says people on the other side of the line are standing by ready to help. >> reporting here outside the

pelosi told cooper that she had just flown into dc the night before from san francisco and was asleep when capitol police banged on her door in the early morning hours. they told her that her husband, paul pelosi, was attacked inside their san francisco home. pelosi said that her husband was struck on 2 sides of his head with a hammer and added that the mockery coming from republicans about this ordeal is compounding the trauma. >> the in our democracy, there is one party that is doubting the outcome of the election feeding that flame. mocking violence that happens. that has to stop. >> pelosi went on to blame the attack on misinformation that she believes for the same reasons of riders were compelled to attack the u.s. capitol. and again, she thinks that there might be a correlation here with the attack inside her home. pelosi hopes the gop calls out these actions to help unify americans instead of fanning the flames of violence and to protect democracy. that is a model to the world in the

newsroom. ella sogomonian kron. 4 news. thank you. ella in the east bay almost a year after her disappearance, police. >> find the remains of alexis gabe today. her family speaking out for the first time since that terrible news broke. our first charles clifford has more. >> well, here in oakley on monday, police investigating the disappearance of alexis gabe say their investigation is now completed. that is because they believe the man that killed her is dead and that her remains have now been found, according to investigators, someone called an anonymous tip line this past thursday to say they had found human remains near plymouth, california, which is to the east of sacramento after comparing dental records, they now believe the remains are those of 24 year-old alexis gabe gave was last seen alive on january. 26 investigators believe her ex-boyfriend, marshall curtis jones had murdered her that evening for unknown reasons. in early june, jones was fatally shot by police in seattle when officers attempted to arrest him on murder charges. alexa's family and friends have been searching for her ever since.

unfortunately, police believe her remains may have been left in multiple locations. so the search will continue deep inside. we were still holding on to hope that she's okay lexus. his father gwyn, gabe says they may never get over the loss of a lexus, but they are relieved. she's been found. but despite all the pain. frustration and grief. we are somehow relieved that she has been found and we can finally bring her home. and finally, a candlelight vigil is planned for wednesday evening to remember alexis gabe. it will be held at 07:00pm here in civic center plaza right next to city hall in oakley. but for now in the east bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> new tonight tonight, authorities say a body was recovered from the water near the port of oakland. today. police received a call little after 10 o'clock this morning of an unresponsive person floating in the water. when they arrived, they determined the victim was dead. anybody with any information is asked to contact oakland police. >> former mma star cain velasquez was in court today for his preliminary hearing.

he's charged with attempting to murder harry back in february. is accused of molesting a four-year-old relative of alaska's in court today. velazquez's lawyer questioned the first police officer on scene about the shooting and showed pictures of launch. hayes, a vehicle. they detailed where bullets went through the windshield. the preliminary hearing will continue with more testimony tomorrow. and after that, the judge will decide if the district attorney's office has enough evidence to move the case forward to trial. velasquez will remain behind bars without bail. a developing story we're following tonight. meta. the parent company, facebook is set to lay off thousands of workers this coming week. it is the latest tech giant. >> to trim its workforce following twitter, lyft and microsoft. a spokesperson for the company declined to comment specifically but directed us to comments made by ceo mark zuckerberg last month during the company's 3rd quarter earnings call when he said the company expects to be the same size or slightly

smaller in 2023. as of october, 26th met employed more than 87,000 workers worldwide. >> the superintendent of the san francisco unified school district has declared a payroll state of emergency. it's over ongoing payment issues for hundreds of district employees for some. and harry explains how the district will be working to fix the problems and has reactions from educators. >> after nearly a year of headaches for teachers and other school district employees because of the new payroll system in power sf which launched in january, the district superintendent doctor matt lane is taking a significant action today. i'm declaring a payroll state of emergency lane says effective immediately. there's a command center of staff fully focused on correcting the payroll issues. they'll also be creating a dashboard so people can see how many issues they're currently working on

and how they're being handled president of the united educators of san francisco union casandra curry l says district employees have high expectations for this command center. the payroll system itself is a software system. does what you tell it to do. >> so our expectations is that this group is able to come together and solve the root causes of these problems. systemically. so that no individual is having to and our whole district suffer from the same problem each and every curry else as they've been protesting for months and she wishes leadership would have taken action sooner. this should have been the response by the district in march when we were sleeping in their offices. and so while i welcome this step is a much needed it's also very delayed its its months and months late school district leaders are calling monday's actions necessary saying people's lives have been significantly

affected, have a system shortcomings as board president. i've been frustrated and ashamed to watch the empower system create so many life hardships for many of our employees. the wave of a grievance occurred in february went over 1000 people either didn't get paid or were severely underpaid. united educators of san francisco has filed an unfair labor practice is charged with the state. >> because of the more than 200 payroll grievances. amanda hari kron. 4 news. >> to the south bay police say a man was hit by a car this evening. well, crossing outside of a marked crosswalk. the crash happened just before 6 this evening in the area of meridian and foxworthy avenues. police say the pedestrian was sent to the hospital with major rather yes, major injuries. this all happened in san jose. the driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. police are warning pedestrians against using crosswalks during

darkness busy intersections. san jose police also investigating a shooting. officers say the shooting happened in the area of story road and mclaughlin avenue just before 7 o'clock this evening, a man was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury. police have not released any details about the shooter at this time. california lawmakers taking aim at fentanyl overdoses among young people. state senator dave cortez is introducing a bill that. >> we'll set a state standard in preventing fentanyl deaths. it is modeled after what santa clara counties, fentanyl working group is doing too. get lifesaving, narcan training and distribution in schools that along with creating a major informational campaign about fentanyl on all media platforms. >> reminder that we just heard that this work is and can be effective and lives are at stake. through this work. it's evident that any solution to

this crisis must include universal preventative measures that will result. and by saving for you. >> according to the national center for health statistics, fentanyl involved deaths of the fastest growing among use ages 14 to 23 in santa clara county, fentanyl overdose deaths rose from 29 2, 90. from the year 2019 to 2020 and then all the way up to 135 deaths in 2021. >> new at 9 regional medical center of san jose announced today that it collected 201 pounds of medications during its crush. the crisis national opioid take back day. the event was held back on october 29th. that is when community members were invited to drop off their unwanted medications. tonight, those medications are headed for a safe and proper disposal. if you're hoping to become a billionaire tonight, you have to wait a little while longer

have issued a warrant for the arrest of 18 year-old piper lewis. lewis pleaded guilty to killing a man she says raped her in 2020. she was 15 at the time. authorities say lewis was seen walking out of the women's center. she was being held at early friday morning. at some point her gps monitor was cut off. lewis could now be facing up to 20 years in prison. and the ceo of delta says there's no way pilots will go out on strike during the upcoming holiday season. the airline says that they're closer than people think to agreeing on a new contract deal with the pilot union. and it would be, quote against the law of the country. if pilots walked off the job for thanksgiving or christmas, delta says they're still many steps remaining in the process before a strike is even allowed to be considered. but the delta pilots union says that the law is on their side. next. former president trump says he is a big announcement. he said so tonight's rally in ohio when he.

physically restrained and intoxicated in violent customer who was denied access to the club. her friends stepped in between her and security, trying to keep her from continuing to engage with us. that's the point at which she kicks. one of my security guards. the general manager says the woman lauren hopkins struck several members of the dna security staff while refusing multiple efforts to be escorted away from the club. >> i was there actually. i was on the sidewalk. i saw the incident these all the time i did not see the entire in stand apart. jessica, let in says she did see. >> was lauren hopkins being restrained by her security >> that part was not recorded in dna security footage but was recorded on a bystander's cellphone in that video. you can hear hopkins saying that she is being choked as well as h a man arguing with security

the water main break in gas leak today. we have video here from the citizen app. this is union in fillmore this afternoon. the issue forcing a shelter in place for about a one-block radius. 30 people had to actually evacuate. yes, apd was able to eventually stop the gas leak evacuation and shelter-in-place orders have been lifted. utility crews working to finish everything up, which may still a flow affects the flow of traffic. no word on what caused either issue. was your local election headquarters in one of georgia's largest counties is facing a lawsuit tonight for failing to mail more than 1000 voters there requested absentee ballots. this coming as the hotly contested race for senate is underway in georgia. brooke shafer has the latest. >> but we're >> so sorry to these voters. i mean, we where sic about cobb county, georgia, just outside atlanta, the director of elections apologizing for what her office is calling a critical mistake. more than

warnock and republican candidate herschel walker still neck and neck. election staff in cobb county. now overnight ing absentee ballots to hundreds of voters both in and out of georgia like kyle long email yesterday saying that. >> due to a clerical error, it was never sent out at all. and overnight it he requested absentee ballot weeks ago, anticipating long lines at polling sites. he said the cobb county elections department told him the ballot was sent, but it never showed up until today. i got a probably like honestly, like 2030, minutes ago. >> filled out questionnaire at this minute. >> that was brooke shafer reporting for us tonight. a judge did agree to extend the deadline for when mail-in ballots need to arrive at the election office. meanwhile, election staff members are asking for a delay on the arrival of filled out absentee ballots until next week. but those ballots would still need to be postmarked by tomorrow.

of problems along i-80 50 their chain up in both spots. now you can see it. >> behind me right there, nearly whiteout conditions and the storm system really going to pick up overnight and i think really getting the heaviest about the middle of the morning through noon tomorrow, then maybe tapering off a little bit toward tomorrow afternoon. but look out there almost looks like a scene from the if you see that movie white out up there right now. tough going. you can get up there across the passes, least 11 people, but it's hard going. you can imagine a lot of delays right down there. that is i-80 somewhere buried underneath all that snow. a winter storm warnings continuing until wednesday. heavy snowfall yet maybe 2, maybe 4 feet snow between now and then above 7,000 feet or so that snow level dropping, though, now, the 5,000 feet tonight, even lower than that, the coming you can see that snow affecting all the mountain passes. if you're headed in that direction and look at this, you're seeing things pick up right now. watch happens as we head in toward the middle of day tomorrow. take you through the night tonight, another branch

and there you go. some very heavy snowfall happening right around noon tomorrow. continuing the early afternoon. then begin to break up a little bit, but still take some time before all that snow begins to mix out. probably not to wednesday night. and then you can see a ton of snow in the high country between now and then you can expect some a very slow going up across the high country tomorrow. just going to be a tough day to go across the sierra nevada probably in the afternoon. things begin to taper off a bit and then the sunshine returns as we get into thursday. all right. here's the storm system moving up right now into the sierra nevada. lots of snow falling across the high country in the lake tahoe. and that is great news to see all that snow coming in this early in the season. we're seeing a lot of rain and making its way into the state. watching out for some flash flooding in the monterey county. numerous thunderstorms been popping up around just off the coastline, just like slated cells out there right now that are moving through the bay area. but we've seen some very unstable air sitting off the coast. this area right here has been looking numerous thunderstorms out there off.
