>> our top story at 6.30, another whale sadly has been found dead in san francisco bay that gray whale was discovered floating treasure island. this was last week has just brings to 6 the total number of dead whales discovered this year. >> so far in the san francisco bay tonight, kron four's dan kerman talks to experts who are trying to determine why we're seeing so many this year. >> this female great whale was found dead last week off treasure island. it's the 5th great whale found dead in the bay this year. that compares to 2 dead gray whales for all of 2024. >> to have 5 gray whales so far in a year within san francisco bay is high. the marine mammal center says it's also unusual and unclear. >> why so many great whales are coming into the bay in the first place. there's been 30 settings this year compared to 4 last year. and those that

are here are not showing similar behavior or vitality. a 3rd are staying a longtime two-thirds art. >> some are malnourished. some art. you know, summer actively forging a lot of others. art of the 5 gray whales that died this year. one was the result of a vessel strike. >> but the others remain undetermined due to their degraded condition. nevertheless, with so many great whales entering the bay this year, steps are being taken to increase awareness. we have ferries east of angel island where many of the sightings have occurred are taking longer routes around where >> majority of the sightings are right now in the bay. the other big key is the u.s. coast guard through their vessel, traffic service is putting out daily blasts on their marine radio that is alerting all mariner types within san francisco bay and coming into san francisco bay of a presence. experts hope that by increasing awareness,

it will reduce the risk degree wales. >> which are expected to be in the bay area for another couple of weeks before continuing their northern migration. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> one person is dead. another is injured after a shooting in oakland's diamond district. police responded to macarthur boulevard about 12 30 overnight citizen app. video shows the police activity outside of taco bell. officers say one of the victims taken to a hospital where they died. another was hospitalized and is expected to make it. police arrested a man this morning who they say is connected to the shooting but no other details have been released. homicide detectives are investigating. police are searching for the person behind a series of vandalism at incidents that targeted the petaluma fairgrounds. according to officers. the suspect is accused of dumping nails, breaking glass and damaging repaired property in 3 separate incidents. this is since mid april. the most

recent vandalism was earlier this week. video shows a person shattering the window of a livestock office. the person's dressed in dark clothing. they had a plastic bag with them. extra patrols will be in the area during this time as police investigate. they're asking people who live around there to remain vigilant. >> democrats in the state legislature are now reversing course on some controversial changes they made child trafficking bill. the question at hand, what punishment should be in place for predators who purchase 16 17 year-olds for kron four's correspondent eytan wallace joins us now with a look. and what was just added to the bill. it's cold to some of bill. 3.79 originally authored by sacramento democratic assembly member maggy krell, the bilson to make it automatic felony to purchase and solicit any minor under the age of 18 for. >> but it's something democratic leadership quickly raised concerns with crowds, bill arguing it could lead to unintended consequence.

specifically. they were concerned it could result in jail time for 16 17 year-old trafficking victims and the punishment for other young adults taking part in consensual activity was 16 or 17 year-old san francisco democratic state senator scott wiener writing this, quote, sending an 18 year-old high school senior to state prison for offering his 17 year-old classmate $20 to 4 around is not smart criminal justice policy as such democrats forced amendments on to the bill to exclude automatic felony in cases specifically when 16 17 year-olds are either purchased or solicited for. that led to outrage from republicans crazy. >> it's crazy. wake up and realize you're on the wrong side of this issue. the governor seemed to echo that message last week his office wrote this, quote, the last to treat all predators who solicit minors the same as a felony, regardless with the intended victims h full stop. now fast forward to this week, we're committed to engaging in those conversations constantly

perfecting the bill assembly. democratic leadership reversed course promising to once again allow the proposed felony in cases involving 16 17 year-old. the only difference this time the felony will not apply when the perpetrator is within a 3 year age range of the minor victim. >> that would still be a misdemeanor. this bill's substantially improves our approach to combating human trafficking and child exploitation in the state of california. and we ask for your support to port is exactly what the legislation got. the bill with the new amendments unanimously advanced through the assembly, appropriations committee. you all have landed. i think a very strong, thoughtful bill aimed at protecting some of our society's most vulnerable people. >> and i always say the number one, the number one thing that we do as lawmakers, the number one thing is to keep our community safe. republicans say they're cautiously optimistic with the new changes to see it move forward and actually see some good progress on it is that's the most important thing for us. and next week we expect the bill with the new amendments to go to the assembly floor

yeah, nice day across much of the sierra nevada. the white you see out there not clouds. that's actually still some snow. by the way, mammoth lakes on the map here. guess what? they just extended their ski season all the way until june because of all the snow they had. in fact, they're probably gonna get some more snow as we head in toward next week. not tomorrow, a look at the numbers out there today. how about this? south liked. all right. now, 70 in truckee. it is a warm 80 degrees. still in reno, head of the monterey bay. that's not a bad place to take. mom 60's and some 70's there tomorrow in the week. it should be very nice. at least the first part to southern california. yeah. warmed even hot out there. 92 in pasadena, 87 in los angeles. 76 degrees in santa barbara by tomorrow afternoon. those temperatures in great lake tahoe area up in the 70's. so a lot of that snow going to be melting up there. plan on warm numbers over the next couple of days. then cooling down as we head throughout the weekend. in fact, you're traveling anywhere around the state tomorrow with these temperatures start to get on the hot side effects. look at fresno tomorrow afternoon. not quite 100 but close enough. 98
