>> as the long holiday weekend winds down, millions of americans are flying home. thanks for joining us here at 11. i'm noelle bellow and i'm dan thorn. but there are storms that are across the country that have been causing some ripple effect at airports like sfo. prom for sara stinson was at the airport tonight. >> to see how things were going. >> there have been more than 300 delays in at least 15 cancellations at sfo on memorial day. but the biggest snafu we saw was a care slowdown in baggage claim all mangled up. >> this is what greeted flyers

see if well as the only flight that wasn't delay. they told us so. >> we lucky to only find on a space priced. everything is smooth. travel wednesday. thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, we're home monday, smoke. >> according to the transportation security administration, at least 18 million people are being screened at airports across the country on this memorial day. i'm sara stinson reporting at sfo kron. 4 news. >> well, flying southwest airlines is about to get more expensive. the airline is ending its 2 free checked bags policy on wednesday. the change takes place after more than 50 years. southwest has not said how much it will charge to check a bag. other carriers generally charge around. 35 to 40 bucks that's just for your first checked bag for a domestic flight. southwest passengers like those with airline credit cards or who book higher class tickets. can still check 2 bags at no cost. a memorial

day observance in sandra fell this morning. you're in county. united veterans council hosted a ceremony with live music. >> speakers and flag displays at marin center. >> meantime, in the east bay, dozens gathered on the uss hornet today in alameda to honor fallen soldiers. the annual event included its traditional wreath toss into the bay. there was also a flyover from the memorial squadron and in san francisco, many more gathered for a ceremony at the presidio kron 4. so charles clifford reports. >> well, here in san francisco's presidio on memorial day, it was a beautiful day to honor those who have given their lives for this country whose broad stripes and on an overcast and breezy san francisco morning. hundreds gathered in the presidio is national cemetery to honor those who have died.

along the coastline. some of it actually he's pushing is forecast be pushing in toward the east bay, but it will not be widespread. not the way we have seen overnight state last night. we had such great skies, but we will see some rain layers, compressed temperature trends. you can see the trajectory going and boy, is it going to be hot on friday? we could certainly see some triple digit temperatures. i've got the 7 day forecast coming up in just a bit. but now back to you, dan and the well. kathy, thank mountain lion alert in fairfield tonight. police sharing these photos. >> from a resident's a ring camera. it was all caught roaming around early this morning. police are telling people to keep an eye on your pets. and if you come across a mountain lion do not antagonize the animal animal control. and the california department of fish and wildlife are monitoring its whereabouts. >> firefighters are investigating a possible arson at a north bay. landmark crews say they respond to the church of one tree in santa rosa

shortly before 8 o'clock this evening and found fire at the back of the building. firefighters did manage to put out the flames before they spread any further. investigators do not provide any information on a suspect. the historic building, though, was built in 18, 73 and has served as the first baptist church before becoming the ripley's. believe it or not, museum. it's currently used as an event space. >> a man is in jail tonight accused of stabbing and killing an elderly man on muni. it happened yesterday afternoon near bayshore boulevard in cortland avenue. the man died at the hospital. investigators later identified a man named daniel garcia as the suspect he was arrested on suspicion of homicide and assault with a deadly weapon. a motive has not released. >> the search continues tonight for a 79 year-old woman with dementia who went missing on the peninsula earlier this month. this billboard here visible from highway 101 in millbrae is asking drivers to keep an eye out for margaret mckinley. she

was reported missing back on may first in despite extensive search and rescue efforts. she has not been found. family members said said that they are hopeful, though, that she will be found safe. anyone who sees her is being asked to call 9-1-1. part services back on track after a fire caused disruptions for thousands of commuters last week. the fire first sparked at the san leandro station tuesday because of an electrical problem. stopping all green line service officials said service would be repaired by tomorrow. but we're able to finish up a day early. bart said crews have had to work day and night to restore service and the damage was more extensive than originally expected. >> what the real effort has been over the last several days is working on wayside, track components within our system that impact our train control system. >> the fire broke out less than 2 weeks after a computer glitch wiped out the entire

transit system. barr tells kron 4 that it's working to improve infrastructure and prevent similar issues from happening again. >> vta is dealing with what appears to be ballooning budget problems by 2027 vta could be facing a near 15 million dollar deficit. if they don't take cost-cutting measures. kron jack moment explains. >> the vta says it's already implementing cost-saving measures such as a hiring freeze says reducing service for customers. that's going to be a last resort. it latest budget shows a dire picture for the next 2 years. and 2026 of eta will have just shy of a $900,000 deficit but come 2027 to number balloons to nearly 15 million vta is in. >> and a unique circumstance in that 80% of our budget is supplied by sales tax. stacey hendler ross with the vta says that sales are down throughout the county. so is the revenue

brought in by the vta and things go down the same track, the deficit will continue to get worse. we're trying to avoid layoffs were trying to avoid service cuts and there are ways that we can do that. implemented a hiring freeze in april. it will also no longer re-hire positions that once an employer retires or leaves the vta. and if that all fails, the vta has some reserves dipped into but its trying to avoid layoffs and impact to customers. so i think in the short term they're absolutely taking the right approach. monica mallett is a transit advocate and says the vts approaches smart and says the lasting agencies want to do is cut service or staff. one shot >> fall apart. you know, you're going to start to ridership. and i know that a death spiral balance. as with the current trump administration looking at cutting public programs, the vta is on its own for now. it's certainly a big issue. and unfortunately, we do have the federal government right now that we're in a step and, you know, health agencies that are struggling with vta hopes the short term solutions will right, the course. but if not, there are furloughing

jitsu fighter. dominic de today his teammates hosted a memorial at a training center for him. his trainer says he was more than a champion. he was a mentor and a friend. >> don did a lot for a lot of people, you know, and itself does a lot for a lot of people. and so when you have somebody that is such top level competitor, but is also willing reach out and help those that are for centering sits underneath. it means a lot. everybody knows the struggle and once here embrace >> damian and won several medals at world competitions and often traveled to support friends in the music industry. 6 people were killed when the small jet crashed into a home last thursday. investigators say key systems failed at montgomery gibbs airport as the plane was trying to land. the ntsb says the runway lights and weather sensors were offline. officials are expected to release a preliminary report on the crash within 30 days. 2

families are without homes tonight after a fire started in one home and spread to the other. >> firefighters responded shortly before 7 o'clock this evening into soon city crews say they arrived to find heavy smoke and flames shooting from the roof. a propane tank exploded during this firefight. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to get a handle on the flames. no one was hurt. cause of the fire is under investigation. >> forward progress has been stopped in a brush fire that broke out in vacaville this afternoon. the cherry fire has burned more than 50 acres near i-80 and sits at 70% containment tonight. cal fire says dry brush in windy conditions caused this fire to grow quickly. fortunately, though, dozens of crew members were nearby for a prescribed burn and they were able to get to that fire in just minutes. and no injuries were reported. >> at a lot of resources that were in close proximity to this fire, was beneficial firefight. you know, immediately we had a bulldozer

that got on the on the right flank and started constructing a line there, which is very helpful. >> cal fire also called in air in that area. take a look at this. sunken ship is getting a lot of attention in alameda. the u.s. coast guard says the boat began sinking last night. it was located in the water docked near hill foods off of blanding avenue. it's unclear what caused it to sink. but residents say they're not surprised. >> i've never on the ship or daycare with this was sitting there as long as i can remember. i've been coming here for a number of years. >> according to the coast guard, the boat is owned by the nonprofit ocean voyages institute and they use this vessel to clean up plastic in the sea. the vessel, though, isn't blocking harbor traffic. as of right now and officials have installed a floating device to prevent oil or any other fuel from leaking into the water.

bubbling at this hour. according to the hawaiian volcano observatory. this latest eruption started on sunday afternoon. callaway has been erupting periodically since december. and this is now the 23rd episode of the ongoing eruption. that's why. >> about that? i was looking at the live video earlier today. it's still just go about killing, you know, not not as high as it was yesterday, but that's crazy. what mother nature can do. she gave us a great weekend for sure. memorial day, little colder today. bit of moisture and was a lot of rain wind to know that some of the sidewalks. but what if you just woke up, you know, you like what? >> but yeah, we have a lot of gray skies. and of course, those winds do make it feel a little chilly. >> i don't think you to be complaining about it being chilly once we get through later on this week. right now, here's a view from sutro tower. that is the cold gate bridge, but it's obscured quite a bit by clouds and some fog. so high temperatures

today, nothing in the 80's below normal. as many as 8 degrees below normal in half moon bay. and so we're going to see a big change because it will not be as chilly tomorrow. tomorrow we will see some 80's in the warm inland spots. what is going on? well, it's a ridge is going to start building in tomorrow. it's a warming trend except for wednesday. he's here's a brief trough. heads towards san francisco. it will drop our high temperatures just a little bit. but then starting on thursday, that ridge is going to really build in a very strong ridge, big area of high pressure. it will bring us the warmest day of the week. the warmest day of the month and the warmest day of the year so far. so that means temperatures well into the 90's. it could reach triple digit temperatures. it will be scorching. but the temperatures start to pull back a little bit come saturday. and by the time we get into sunday and monday, there's a trough and things definitely dial it back down. so temperatures tomorrow will

be warmer than today in san francisco in pretty much across the entire bay area with a lot of areas in the city in the low 60's, although the sunsets 59 degrees and keeping things just around 60 degrees right at the water's edge. so the beaches look pretty good. you're going to see some 60's, though, a little bit warmer as we start to head toward the bay shoreline. and we get a little bit warmer again as we head southward going for the 70's palo alto. 76 degrees mountain view. 76 degrees in here is the south bay with some 80's 83 in los gatos. 79 in santa clara, 76 union city. but 81 in pleasanton livermore, 84 concord, 83 and you get the picture was starting to warm things up, especially well inland. fairfield, 83 on bill 84 santa rosa. 78. and here is a look at the all important 7 day forecast. we have got some temperatures starting to warm up and by the time we get to friday, it's going to be
