>> we're following some breaking news on the richmond. sandra fell bridge. thanks for joining us here on kron for news at 3. let's get right to it. i'm justine waldman cause we're going to show you the traffic backup that's happening right now. this is heading into marin county from the east bay. >> crews have closed some lanes for emergency repairs on the upper deck of the richmond. sandra fell bridge. this closure is expected to take several hours. we can see it's already starting to impact the afternoon commute. some school buses. they're already stuck in this traffic. this is a live look here. caltrans told region maintenance crews found some problems with concrete on the deck on the upper deck. so the following lanes are being closed right now. that's leading to that's the westbound traffic and also lanes 2, 3, of the lower deck as well. the eastbound traffic also being impacted. they do say one lane will remain open in both directions. but despite that, there's still a big backup we can really see from here what's happening on the upper deck. bart ney from

caltrans is joining us here now live on kron 4 this afternoon. so we could talk about the issue here on the sandra fell bridge park. thanks for being here. >> can't get into unthinkable happening. so start what is the emergency problem there? some problems with the concrete. what's going on? >> so the morning caltrans crew found a concrete balling or what motor might think about the possible. and lane number the upper deck of the work that the nfl bridge, the well hold about 3 inches wide. so with pick up where we need to but both the land but look at repair. they made it all the way through like rat about what it what below or that. but right now, lane being a quote, westbound on the upper deck of the richmond fell bridge lane. 2, 3, are cold. but the mower deck are we? nothing fell that up on great form we could make the repair. >> ok, so there was some sort of pothole that was found. that was i just want to make

sure i understand this correctly was big enough that it went all the way from the upper deck down into the lower deck like there's a whole. >> well, there's a deck that you drive the upper deck. yes, like feeling for the lower and though, yeah, about a little pinprick, not about one inch in diameter. kind of made it through, though. there's not much the grade of any sort on the lower deck, but we do need to make the repair of our crews will be cutting out action in the reporting. the concrete want a pardon up will be able to reopen the upper deck. >> got it. so that's the repair work that needs to get done is sort of just patching up this whole on the top and maybe some work also on underneath. >> it will cut, but you doubt actually play for more from the lower deck traffic on the lower deck of the bridge. probably the left in place right now. our maintenance crews are putting that will mark info they can for copper a kind of like your patio. what you got to have your 4 more can play first. and then you for the catholic are were showing some pictures that i believe are from caltrans that are up on our website. kron 4

>> yeah, they they they can. you counter and quick map for the latest traffic update or they to kron 4. >> that's the place to be right. there. you got. thank you, barney from caltrans. joining us now is where taking a look here at the emergency lane issues that they're happening here on the richmond. sandra fell bridge. they found a pothole on the upper deck. it sort of then week down into the lower deck he described as about 3 inches. they did have to close some lanes. so they're going out, got some concrete out their repair it. but it's just a long process. and we can already see the issues that it's having. a bart ney did tell us just now, but they are hoping they can have this repair tonight and there won't be any issues for the morning commute, but we will obviously be watching this because it affects a lot of drivers. and in both of the really busy commute sections going from marin county into the east bay and also then the east bay into marin county. so this is a big story we're watching and as part said, updates will be on kron 4 dot com. so stay with us for more on this. but

also this afternoon, we're watching another big story as today marks the start of fire season in santa rosa. calif fire sharing this fire activity that has already happened in the a lake and the napa unit prior to the official start of the fire season. they're showing us here. how many acres have burned just in the month of may. the agency says that there were 71 wildfires that burned 102 acres going back to 2014. there were 3 years that wildfires burned more than 100 acres in may for that area. 2022 saw the most acres burned more than 1600. now staying in santa rosa. fire crews are going to be in doing some work with the community on a weed abatement program. and as kron four's theresa stasi reports, one woman says this is good because no one wants to go through what they dealt with in 2017. was hard we're lucky to be alive. >> sharing a bobby says that she will never forget that day. she and her husband had

to evacuate their santa rosa home as fire erupted all around them. their home was one of nearly 9,000 destroyed in the wine country. fires in 2017. 44 people died. damages hovered around 15 billion dollars that's been through one. so don't need another one. >> so with the city center is that the clearing first day of fire season? it allows us to initiate or weed abatement ordinance within the city. so that's us within the next week or 2 after today going out and starting those with and especially john lawton properties within the city limits. >> will power's is a fire inspector with santa rosa fire department. monday marks the official start of fire season and when the weed abatement program begins, we have pretty good compliance with residents. residents are already doing the work or the work has already been done. >> but it's just a reminder that when we do come around, we are looking for, you know, that overgrown lots overgrown properties that may need to be

mode. and that's where this weed abatement ordinance comes into play with us coming power says creating that defensible space can be a difference-maker with tall weeds like flashy feels fires. more prone to move quickly and can overcome overtake a property, a house or people trying to escape. and the big thing is that defensible space. if you do your part, your neighbor does their part. and that neighbor does their part. you're building more resilience. >> well, fire, resilient neighborhood. he says, besides getting the word out, it is critical to know when to clear space is you know, the old saying, you before 10:00am, is that still a big thing? >> you don't want during the heat of the day and if you're mowing weeding, make sure you're in a field with something that's made to mow a lawn. any sparks or anything like that can cause a fire and that that resident or person doing that work can be held liable. his couture dresses. >> don't throw any secrets you know, big careful. everything is dry. >> in santa rosa, theresa kron, 4 news.

>> robin in the house say that in fire neighborhoods were taken out they're ready for wildfire season is all we have to second. >> living in california comes with a threat of wildfires. and coming up, we're going to learn about this non toxic fire the 2 bay area teens developed in order to help fight wildfires. >> wow. air quality questionable. today there's wildfire smoke that's drifting in from canada. that has prompted air. quality advisory might be able to see and smell smoke in the area. let's get all the latest information right now from our media out. meteorologist kyla grogan. yeah, hi there. and really this point we're really more the it hayes, right that you would see. >> and we do say that sometimes anyway, from mount tam and some of that has to do with the marine layer and sometimes it can be smoke. but today i will say we kind of started off with a whole lot of yellow dots and we've pretty much stay there. a couple places have popped into a better space. san francisco is one of them, but that does main. it's moderate air quality and it could possibly

get a little bit worse. and here's why we take a look at where this wildfire smoke has gotten. these wildfires are from canada. well, to the north of us and to the east of us what you can see, even so a little bit of that kind of makes its way towards california. so as we take a look at what's going to happen over the 48 hours, you can see this is where those fires are all the way up in canada. there is a weather system that's actually gonna start pushing things kind of to the south and towards the east over the next 48 hours. that would probably bode well for us. obviously, it will not bode well for others as that smoke will be headed right in that direction. there's that weather system, though. that's going to start tracking towards the east. as that happens, it will start to drag some of that there. but something to keep an eye on. also keeping an eye on the sierra today, as you can see, as i zoom in here, getting a little bit of that tropical moisture. we talked about this last week, how we'd have a little bit of that kind of monsoonal feeling coming in and it is really getting fired up right now in parts of the central sierra, not really affecting our weather. pretty nice here. as you can see, we've had the clouds kind of pull away from some of the coastline. we're looking

pretty good. quick look at your temperatures shows you that we've got 60's 70's and just a couple of 80's out there, livermore right now at 80 degrees. but it's a temperate kind of day. that's where we'll stay for the next couple of days. i'll be back in a little bit. we'll talk more about 7 day forecast. >> and along the coast now, a popular beach in san mateo county remains closed after a surfer's board was bitten by a shark kron. 4 charles clifford. spoke with that surfer about what happened. >> here in san mateo county, a local surfer says his board was attacked by a shark. feels lucky to be alive. >> was actually a beautiful, warm day, you know. so we decided to take a family trip to the beach. yen's heller says that saturday afternoon around one he paddled out here on tara beach on his surfboard. >> he says that he and several other surfers were waiting for a wave when something foot and pretty hard so that it that i fell off the board. >> and then i looked back and then i saw just the big mouth with the teeth and the black eye of the shark head. but

going right into the rail of my board and like grabbing onto it. >> un says the shark, which he estimates was about 10 feet long. let go of the board and swam away heller in the other nearby surfers then paddled in the short haul. the lifeguards. what had happened. they then cleared everyone out of the water. heller says he was uninjured. feels lucky to be alive coming out of it without a scratch. good. that's just to destroy board. it's super lucky. the california academy of sciences says that sharks along the california coast like to feed on seals and sea lions and that in very rare cases where they attack people, it's probably because the sharks mistake that person for a seal or sea lion, they recommend that anyone going into the water use the buddy system. they say that being with a partner greatly improves your chances of surviving an attack. it's advice that yen's agrees with knowing that. >> there are people around and helping out if something happens as good. un says that the experience has left him

note or looks great. the head over to the wall just hit it. let's go san jose right now. beautiful out there. sunshine. >> we're looking at about 78 degrees today. thankfully not the record from 1960, of 106. no, thank you. but you can see how close to average we are their average of 77. so let's see where we're at right now. the magic number. 75 at the moment. and you can see just a nice temperatures out there. 80 in livermore. 64 in san francisco head up to the north bay got some 60's and 70's. sigh of relief after the heat that we had over the weekend here. little breezy, especially if you are oakland right now up to about 20 miles per hour. it is that afternoon breeze thing we're going to be dealing with. there is a little northerly wind, but it is more inland and to the north of us, you can see where they do have a red flag warning. i just checked chico right now up to 95 degrees. so there is still plenty of heat in the state that red flag warning does expire for them this evening. at 8 o'clock. thankfully, we don't have to deal with that today, but we will be ready and always thinking about our fire season right here we go over the next 5 days. temperatures staying right in line for my inland

spots. this is lovely. this is exactly where you want to be for june as we start the month were in balance here between high and low pressure. nothing particularly dominating. it makes us whats called zonal meeting that we just kind of flat line and stay in that space where we don't have anything kind of moving things up with heat or cooling us down too significantly. we do have some interesting weather going on in this year. there you can see that that is certainly a firing up there with some lightning. but as far as in the bay area, you know, we're just going to have a nice evening. we're going to bring the marine layer back in in the overnight hours, which means tomorrow, wake up a little coastal drizzle, a little bit of fog, a little june gloom to start the day, but fear not because they will be heading on out, at least if you are not at the coast, the coast. i do think you'll be hanging on to some of those clouds again tomorrow. but everyone else to get some nice afternoon sunshine in there. and here's your seven-day forecast. boy, it's a nice one. nothing too extreme. a little sunshine in our afternoon. some beautiful weather. and just in time for the weekend, we'll warm it up a little bit for your outdoor plans. still ahead, best.

about these cameras during kron for news at noon today. is to start with warnings. >> educate people and then moved to actual accountability. we just don't have enough officers to consistently enforce our traffic laws and yet we know that we need to modify behavior of some drivers to keep everybody safe. and this is an efficient way to do that and make our roads safe for everyone. >> so that's one part. there's the red light cameras and then a second program is going to launch this fall. the targets speeders with dozens of cameras across the city. still ahead here, 3, there are some faces muscles that are threatening the wildlife in california. we'll see what they just did to keep these muscles from getting into lake tahoe. >> and the senate is now debating trump's budget bill. a look at the week ahead. and the transgender track athlete wins gold in the california state championships. despite some threats from president trump's. we'll see what

atlantic. and what it can do is you can make it a little more difficult for these hurricanes to form because it will reflect the sunlight, keeping the water a bit cooler. it will also sometimes have wind shear associated with it. and that can kind of cut some of the development off right at the top as they come across. but what's happening now is that this year dust is actually showing up already in the caribbean and starting to reduce their air quality and is expected to get to florida by about wednesday and then head towards texas. so not only to those folks have to deal with the fact that they've got fire smoke coming down from canada that now potentially we have saharan dust coming across as well. how about that? we don't have that to contend with. we do have to keep an eye out for that. canadian wildfire smoke that right now blue skies, beautiful as we take a live look here at the golden gate bridge. temperatures quite nice. you can see mostly in the 60's and 70's livermore. now at about 80 degrees wind picking up as we get into the afternoon. that's kind of our usual, right? but not bad. as we look at stormtracker, you can see here, some of those clouds have given a break even to parts of the coast. i'll be

back in just a bit. we'll take another look at your seven-day forecast. >> we'll now go to colorado where investigators say 12 people were injured in this terror attack in boulder. 2 of the victims remain in the hospital. now authorities say that the suspect has now been charged with a federal hate crime as he confessed to throwing. well, a tough cocktails into a group that gathered to bring attention to israeli hostages in gaza. and he said that he would do it again. reporter nicole ferrer has more. >> the courthouse on pearl street, a weekly stop for volunteers walking with running for their lives, kids, elderly, one into a holocaust survivor, just volunteers. if this is what we do, you know where we can to raise that awareness and share the voice of the hostages. cannot speak the scene of a violent attack shown here on video. this man waited for us. >> we have the guys and might cocktails and threw it less than 24 hours later. people

ask, are you ok? yes, i'm okay. but then you take another breath and you're like. >> it's sadness at victor walks us through what he witnessed sunday while setting up. i believe i heard a crash. i felt a lot of heat. i turned to a flame and someone was on fire immediately jumping into action myself, 2 or 3 other people. this is not something we do guy who doesn't eat it. outside the banners are flags and we're just trying to get this fire out us as we could. to say it felt like it took one or 2 minutes always felt way too long to get this fire out. once she was on the ground. i was then with her husband who has on a a leg without sharing their identities. victor paints a picture of who some of the victims are. i feel like the youngest might have been in 40's ish the older ones are about 85 the to some more severely hurt had been married 58 years. another victim. he knows a holocaust survivor. she's an amazing, wonderful

woman. when when she gives or talks. i'm always want to be there because she has such energy. in fact, and i i lighting up like i was in the ambulance with her just talking with her before she's taken. the hospital is just like just such energy. just amazing person. >> that was nicole fierro reporting for us. sen francisco state senator scott wiener sharing the following statement in reaction to the attack here. it reads jews here and around the world are being targeted with violence. it's not random. it's a pattern fueled by anti-semitism and it's terrifying. it has to stop. a bay area man started his mission to walk 100 miles barefoot in the campaign for immigrant children's rights. patrick mcconnell left ocean beach in san francisco. this is from saturday morning. he is going to santa cruz again with no shoes on some friends there joined him for the first mile.

then be filtered and distributed to customers and the can take up to 14 days to fully inflate. a boat that was going to be launched in lake tahoe is now in quarantine after inspectors found some invasive gold. the muscles on it inspectors made this discovery friday at the alpine meadows and section station. this was the first time this invasive species was found on a boat at lake tahoe. thanks to the inspections, though, that boat never got into the water. there have been no discoveries of golden mussels in lake tahoe. they have, though, gained a foothold in the sacramento san joaquin delta. all right. the northern lights were visible in some parts of the bay area and saturday night into early sunday local photographer sentence these images. this is in windsor and the lights were also visible last night in northern sonoma county. they were very pretty nice, clear conditions for them there until stars and the lights.
