where those warning signs are going up. the news at 4 starts now. hello, everyone. welcome. thank you for joining us. i'm catherine heenan and i'm vicki liviakis. crews have closed lanes for emergency repairs. >> on the richmond, sandra fell bridge. this closure is expected to take several hours and is going to impact your evening commute. in fact, this is a live look at the bridge right now. that's not a still photo. that is video those cars are not moving. caltrans toll maintenance crews. they found unsound cracked concrete on the upper deck of the bridge. so the following lanes are closed right now. lane, 2 of the upper deck, which is westbound traffic and then lanes 2, 3, of the lower deck, which is eastbound traffic lane. one will remain open in both directions. and here's a look at the area that crews

are focused on repairing right now. drivers should expect delays. they're advised to find other routes on the richmond. sandra fell bridge course. we're following this story for you and we'll share more information as soon as it becomes available. well, today marks the official beginning of fire season in santa rosa. so fire crews are going to begin working with the community. ana. weed abatement program as kron four's terisa stasio reports. one woman says that it's a good first step because no one wants to go through what happened in 2017. it was hard we're lucky to be alive. >> sharing a bobby says that she will never forget that day. she and her husband had to evacuate their santa rosa home as fire erupted all around them. their home was one of nearly 9,000 destroyed in the wine country. fires in 2017. 44 people died. damages hovered around 15 billion

dollars that's been through one. so don't need another one. >> so with the city center is declaring first day of fire season. it allows us to initiate or weed abatement ordinance within the city. so that's us within the next week or 2 after today going out and starting those with the game and especially john lawton, properties within the city limits >> will power's is a fire inspector with santa rosa fire department. monday marks the official start of fire season and when the weed abatement program begins, we have pretty good compliance with residents. residents are already doing the work or the work has already been done. >> but it's just a reminder that when we do come around, we are looking for, you know, that overgrown lots overgrown properties that may need to be mode. and that's where this weed abatement ordinance comes into play with us coming out. power says creating that defensible space can be a difference-maker with tall weeds, light flashy feels fires, more prone to move quickly and can overcome overtake property. a house or people trying to escape. and

they had to cut through the remaining roof and the walls. no one was injured. investigators believe the fire started somewhere outside the building. but not clear yet what caused the fire the threat of a devastating wildfire comes at the cost of living in california. but now to bay area teenagers. >> they've developed a nontoxic fire retardant that they say can lower that high price. corporate switch recall reports. >> others in the tri valley are chopping down and clearing out in summer is still officially weeks away. the recent hot weather is an indication of what is to and what has already been done on point and 2020. >> i could stand my front porch and see one fire plum over there, 2 hamilton and tom kroger and his wife have spent years making their home as fire resistant as possible. debt itself is a t-rex material. that is a bit more fire, resilient. and as a

kind of move away from us now, what's interesting as we take a live look here at our radar, you can see in the central sierra things are firing up and that is a little bit of that tropical moisture. we talked about it last week that there was a system that kind of came together dissipated. but it did send a little bit of energy won't really affect our weather here in the bay area. you see the nice blue skies and these lovely temperatures right now. you know, we're up to 77 the livermore, but that's it for us for some warm temperatures go kind of nice compared to last weekend. when come back in a little bit, we'll talk more about the rest of the week. thank you. kyla times. a popular beach san mateo county was closed for 48 hours. this after. >> surfer's board was bitten by a shark saturday had took a chunk kron four's charles clifford talk to that server and has details. >> here in san mateo county, a local surfer says his board was attacked by a shark. feels lucky to be alive. >> was actually a beautiful, warm day, you know. so we decided to take a family trip to the beach. yen's heller

says that saturday afternoon around one he paddled out here on tara beach on his surfboard. >> he says that he and several other surfers were waiting for a wave when something foot and pretty hard so that it that i fell off the board. >> and then i look back and then i saw just the big mouth with the teeth and the black eye of the shark head. going right into the rail of my board and like grabbing onto it. >> un says the shark, which he estimates was about 10 feet long. let go of the board and swam away. heller in the other nearby surfers then paddled in the short haul. the lifeguards. what had happened. they then cleared everyone out of the water. heller says he was uninjured, feels lucky to be alive coming out of it without a scratch. good. just to destroy board. >> it's super lucky. the california academy of sciences says that sharks along the california coast like to feed on seals and sea lions and that in very rare cases where they attack people, it's probably because the sharks mistake that person for a seal

or sea lion, they recommend that anyone going into the water use the buddy system. they say that being with a partner greatly improves your chances of surviving an attack. it's advice that yen's agrees with knowing that. >> there are people around and helping out if something happens as good. un says that the experience has left him shaken, but he does plan to get back in the water with a renewed sense of respect for nature. i do respect the ocean. i do respect the animals in the ocean. >> so, you know, like visiting to some extent. so i think having that mindset is good. now, state parks did reopen the water here in montara beach on monday afternoon. but for now in san mateo county, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> and a look behind the scenes of this weekend's state democratic party convention. plus, federal investigators have charged the man accused of setting fire people at peaceful rally for israeli hostages a run. we have the

evening, he's been at santa rita jail after being arrested, accused of killing a man and severely injuring his girlfriend. this all happened on wednesday evening when the 2 it out just rolling minding their own business through the streets of oakland when the chp spotted hernandez garcia's stolen car, they tried to pursue him. it got so dangerous even for them that they called off the pursuit continue following him with their helicopter where he eventually made his way onto the surface streets. and according to the chp, they would then notified at his location once again, but not before he's plows into 2 people. one of them actually was a teacher at councilman high school just 2 days away from about to celebrate his students graduation. instead, he dies at the scene. his name is doctor marvin boomer. they

ultimately arrested hernandez garcia. but you can imagine just how painful it was for the entire community. the very next day they had a vigil. then on friday they had the graduation ceremony where they honored. >> dr boomer recently got his doctorate. as far as hernandez garcia. he has been charged with multiple felony charges, including but he kular manslaughter hit and run and evading police officers. back to you. >> all right. let's talk about the weather again as we look live at the san mateo bridge and kyla grogan here to fill us there. so we made it up to about 70. >> san jose so far today it is sunny out there. >> that would put us 2 degrees above normal and nowhere near thankfully, the wild record from 1960, of 106 degrees. no, thank you. we we did that last weekend. we did it close enough last weekend. temperatures out there right now. pretty francisco to 64 degrees. you can see if you

head inland, you'll find some of those 70's and even 81 in fairfield right now. but other than that, it's just been a really seasonal day. quite lovely. we are getting that wind that's rolling in in the afternoon now to 22 miles per hour. there in oakland and 21 livermore. so obviously it is breezy this afternoon. one point out also to the north of us, we have a red flag warning. this is for areas like redding like chico, where chicken, by the way, has been up into the mid 90's today. that goes until 8 o'clock tonight. thankfully, we don't have that going on, but it is a reminder that we are in that time of the year when we have to look out for fire season and all of the all of the difficult times paintings temperature wise, though, at least this is on our side this week. these are my inland temps and they are lovely and they don't very, very much as you can see, it is just a really nice run of, you know, upper 70's to low 80's. and the reason for that is we've got this nice balance between high and low pressure, which keeps us zonal. we don't have anything terribly dramatic. the only drama i've got is

>> now to the targeted terror attack in boulder, colorado. the man accused of using a makeshift flame thrower to attack a group that had gathered to bring attention to israeli hostages in gaza. he's been charged with a federal hate crime. he told police that he had planned this for a year and specifically was targeting what he described as the zionist group kron four's. joey horta has reaction from local jewish groups. >> and we've just confirmed synagogues here in the bay area are beefing up their security after this latest attack. take a look at this mugshot of the suspect. 45 year old mohammed solid bond is an undocumented immigrant from egypt. according to the white house, authorities say

he's been charged with first-degree murder. investigators say solvent targeted a group that's called run for their lives, drawing attention to israeli hostages in gaza. witnesses say he yelled free palestine and set some of the victims on fire with a flame thrower were outraged. i mean, the community is getting really angry. >> that what we've been warning for for 20 months, which is that inciting words can lead to violence is now happening and happening repeatedly. but it's something that we're speaking about with our community security service with sfpd and police departments across the region. this follows the shooting deaths of a couple who worked for the israeli embassy outside a jewish museum in washington, d.c., last month. >> state senator scott wiener of san francisco posting, quote, juice here at around the world are being targeted with violence. it's not random. it's a pattern fueled by anti-semitism and is terrifying. it has to stop. and again, security is now elevated synagogues here in

the bay area. according to the jcrc in san francisco, joey horta kron. 4 news. >> in the south bay, san jose is cracking down on dangerous driving after another person was hit and killed last week. starting in august, the city will activate red-light cameras at 4 major intersections said this is part of a one year pilot program. drivers caught running red lights could face a $486 fine today on kron 4 news at noon. we ttlked with mayor matt mahan about the new cameras is to start with warnings. >> educate people and then moved to actual accountability. we just don't have enough officers to consistently enforce our traffic laws and yet we know that we need to modify behavior of some drivers to keep everybody safe. and this is an efficient way to do that and make our roads safe for everyone. >> and a second program is going to launch this fall. it will target speeders with dozens of citywide cameras.

and now to a big story that we're following for you. the trump administration is threatening to take away federal money from a list of bay area cities and counties which don't cooperate with ice and converse. lindsey ford talked with mountain views, mayor about what this could mean for her community. >> president trump signed an executive order enforcing the heart crackdown on immigrants and jurisdictions that protect them among the bay area cities. and the list is mountain view. everyone belongs in in mountain view. >> i'll say for, you know, myself in particular, i'm multiracial. my father's japanese american in my mother's chinese and puerto rican american. and so i know what that's like to feel like you don't belong to be asked. we're really from. and now don't ask those questions mountain view. mayor l says since president donald trump took office. >> every day has become a challenge, especially for the migrant population. says city leaders have recently addressed to the community

of those gusts over 30 miles per hour outside right now, least toward the beaches in the san francisco numbers, though. yeah, impressive. we've got some warm weather out there today. that's for sure. 77 and nice in livermore, 76 in cocker. 75 in san jose. couple patches of fog pass into the golden gate bridge right behind those numbers. 71 now in downtown san francisco. 67 in oakland is 75 in san jose. so the fog and low cloud cover. yeah. kind of hugging the coastline. early on. then really kind of just dissipated here a little bit. normally component. and you've just got one branch of clouds out there right now, just kind of hanging on. so overall, think we're looking good in the evening hours. thunderstorms popping up over the sierra nevada, though, not going affect the bay area. so as you head through the evening, yeah, we're looking good outside those winds, though. yeah, it's going to be blustery in spots, especially near the coastline. you see that onshore breeze right now to san francisco for 30 miles about that gust to 37. but even as some of the interior valleys now you're seeing some of those blustery winds. and so this time of year, we worry about some of those grass fires getting started is spreading rapidly. and that
