>> now at 6 workers and students on treasure island say they're shocked after the sudden announcement of job corps closure. what a federal judge is saying tonight. >> ice detains 15 people including children in san francisco. the sister of a woman who was arrested is speaking out tonight. the news at 6 starts now. >> is at 6. good evening. thanks for being with us tonight for kron. 4 news at 6, i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. a federal judge has blocked the trump administration. >> from dismantling another federal program this time its job corps, which provides housing education and training to some 25,000 low-income

youth at centers all across the country. however, this judge's ruling is only temporary, which is why students and teachers at the treasure island center rally today in kron four's dan kerman. was there. you can expect students to focus on education. >> when they don't know what they're going to eat, they don't know if they have a safe place to sleep at night. >> 19 year-old eddie lopez says before he came to job corps 4 months ago, he had no place to live a limited education, few job prospects and no direction in his life. >> being your job corps. i have grown so much. much more than i ever thought was possible. i've learned different soft skills. well, also getting hands-on experience in my trade. but most importantly, i've gotten a second chance on my future. >> lopez was joined by fellow students and teachers thursday outside the treasure island job corps center to protest the trump administration's attempt to end the program

which is provided housing and job training for low-income students across america for more than 60 years. >> it would rip opportunity away from those who need it. the most. it would push already struggling youth back into the cycle of poverty, homelessness and hopelessness, shutting down job corps. it's a service to this country. but last week's announcement by the trump administration to pause operations, that job corps >> has already resulted in more than 200 students treasure island being sent away. only 100 still remain including lopez. i'm very much worried not only for me, but for the students here. i've spoken with countless different students and it's just it's horrifying. it's horrible. >> it's disheartening. on wednesday, a federal judge put a temporary hold on the trump administration's plans to end the program by june 30th and has set a date for a hearing later this month. >> well, that is created a glimmer of hope. the students that remain here aren't overly

optimistic. it's it's really it's really heartbreaking. it's like they're snatching what they're snatching our chance at a future. so for now, those 100 job corps students that remain here will continue to be educated and continue to have a place to live. >> but their future remains unclear. all dependent on what happens in court on june. 17th on treasure island. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> it's been arrested. accused of killing 2 people in vallejo. 45 year-old the sample was arrested yesterday in san francisco in late may. 2 men were killed after getting shot. 3rd man was also shot. and last we heard he was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury. sample is currently in jail, accused of double murder. >> the san mateo county board of supervisors has voted to move forward with the removal procedures against sheriff christina corpus. this comes after voters approved that gives the board authority to remove a sitting sheriff for

cars. corpus is accused of abuse of power, retaliation against employees and having an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff. she is denying the allegations. today's vote is just the first step in a long process. the sheriff will now be placed with a notice that the board intends to move forward with the removal process. and now there will be a series of meetings and conferences with the sheriff before the vote board actually votes on whether to remove her from office. no date has been set for that vote. >> a federal judge is weighing in on the removal of a homeless encampment in berkeley. judge edward chen has placed a temporary pause on the removal process clear out police and city crews descended on the encampment at 8th and harrison yesterday morning. they started clearing people's belongings intense. the items were soon hauled away. now. most everything is back in place. but city officials argue this encampment is a safety hazard. rats, needles, combustible

materials. the most recent homeless count shows out of the approximately 845 homeless people in berkeley, a little more than half of them don't have any kind of shelter. all right. let's talk weather now as we get a live look at the golden gate bridge. and if you are outside, at least you can say that the weather is pretty to be with us on and off throughout the summer months. and here we go again. racing back onshore tonight, a little faster than it did last night. you see over san francisco right now, pretty decent sea breeze out there right now. and that's going to bring that cloud cover. well onshore as we head through the night tonight and tomorrow to temperatures out the door. right now you've got 67 degrees. not bad into san francisco. 65 in oakland. still warm. 72 in san jose. 73 in lamoore. 69 now cooling off in concord. 64 degrees in santa rosa and a cool and foggy 59 in half moon bay.

well, here we go. we've got call. many spinning off the coastline. see the circulation right here. just spinning out there. and the southerly winds kicking up from the south, bring some clouds along the coastline. couple storms up over the sierra nevada to again as that area of low pressure kind of meander through southern california. kind of bringing a little instability in the atmosphere. but the bay area, it's really all about low clouds and fog. going to be seen that throughout the evening hours. if you're headed out, more of those clouds on the way, cool and breezy out toward the beaches, still fairly mild in many of the valleys to 9 o'clock tonight. all right, lawrence. today we're hearing from the sister of woman detained by ice agents in san francisco yesterday. the woman was one of at least 15 people, including children arrested by ice agents during an ice check. kron four's gayle ong joins us live in the studio with the latest kale. >> grant vicki, the sister of the woman detained by ice as her sister is a good person and that the children had stopped going to school because they are detained and there's no information available when she tries to contact ice and we can confirm the arrest happened during an

ice check-in here in san francisco. in the 15 people detained by ice include 4 children, one of them, 3 years old. >> no settled that the inning as most mean, speaking through a translator yoon that says her sister and sister's children were detained by ice wednesday and spent the night at ice is a field office on sansom street in san francisco. i don't know why they detained even the children making them sleep on the floor. >> in the cold hungry. >> it is an injustice. what they're doing and i don't know why they do that to the children. >> unit says her sister had an ankle monitor and was complying with all ice requirements. unit spoke at a virtual press conference hosted by immigration advocates. these people to our knowledge had appeared for either regularly scheduled check. ins are instructed to come to the ice office and voluntarily came. some of those who attended their check-in is again had received last minute orders from ice to show up, not expecting that

they would be team priya patel with the california collaborative for immigrant justice shared some of the families are en route to an ice detention center in texas. others have been sent to a center in the central valley. this comes amid ramped up immigration enforcement across the country. a campaign promise from president trump. these operations along with misleading messaging are an attempt to intimidate our communities. >> undermine due process, prevent them from attending their mandated hearings and check ins and carry out races schemes for mass deportation. this is a common theme not just in the bay area, not just in san diego, california. >> it's happening all over the country and that poses a huge constitutional implications where there is a concern that due process is being compromised. >> gabriel espinosa is an immigration attorney based in san francisco. he gives this advice for undocumented immigrants. know your rights going into court. do not find anything without the presence of your artorney and did not

say anything without the presence of your attorney because that could really make the difference between being able to come back or not. we're getting out of detention and certainly missing a court date. >> response to the ice arrests. congressman nancy pelosi releasing a statement earlier today saying in part that there are concerns about isis behavior and reform of ice is needed. now more than ever. gayle ong kron, 4 news. >> thank you, gayle. with crypto billionaire is facing a multi-million dollar expansion he is funding it. this is san francisco's police surveillance unit. mayor daniel lurie announce the 9 and a half million dollar donation today from ripple ceo chris larson. the money will fund the new headquarters of the real-time investigation center on montgomery street. the center uses technology like drones and license plate readers. the donation will also go towards updating that technology to assist crime fighting.

>> someone calls 9-1-1. >> they deserve a fast and smart response. violent crime happens, we need to be able to track down the suspect and build a strong case when a person goes missing or someone is in crisis every second counts. and that's why we're here today. >> the mayor's office says the center assisted in more than 500 arrests last year. >> the santa clara valley medical center is asking for help identifying this patient. they say that this is a man between is 30's 40's. he's 5 feet. 9 inches tall. weighs about 150 pounds. he was found wearing a light blue hooded shirt with blue jeans and he was involved in an incident on april. 25th on the caltrain tracks in santa clara officials are looking for his family to notify them of his medical situation. if you have

any information you're being asked to call the santa clara valley medical center. >> well, a pleasant surprise. if you're still using gas to fill up in most of us are aaa says prices have dropped. you probably noticed it as summer kicks off the average price for a gallon of regular in california for 73. that's down $0.8 from last week. aaa says june gas prices haven't been this low since 2021, the lowest prices in the bay. right now we're in solano and santa clara counties where people on average are paying for it for a gallon of regular. >> still ahead on kron for news at 6 copper thieves are getting schools, transit systems, street lights, even ev charging stations. now california's top law enforcement official says finally enough is enough. >> and after the break, some parents, students and staff members are threatening a recall after their school board cut a program intended to help black students.

>> parents, students and teachers in marin county are disappointed with a controversial school board decision. the board voted to not renew. >> consultant contracts for black student support services. it title pius high school in mill valley. a school that's been plagued by racial issues. kron four's terisa stasio reports. >> not backing down. we've been telling them all year don't put this program on thursday morning about 100 people held signs and taped posters to speak out about cuts to the black student support team and pius high school. i'm hoping that we'll see that this is really meaningful to the students and

the entire community on hand with the 2 employees at the center of the cots, paul austin and to miesha tate austin. >> it shows that the community cares about our children. i think that the children need to see this is really important that this work continues, right? we're just started. >> on tuesday, that highest union high school district board slashed their jobs stating that the contract positions were not sustainable. in a statement to kron 4, the board president defended the action by saying, quote, a majority of the board found that mr. austin and this tape, austin, we're doing the same work as district employees and at a value not fair and reasonable because their pay was far greater than market rate for comparable work. they were not providing specialty services. therefore they did not meet the qualifications for government entity, consultant and quote, yet another board member sent kron 4. this statement, quote. >> i fully support the work

that has been done by the b s s s t and believe that renewing the contracts of tunisia, tate and paul austin is critical unless someone year the program has shown remarkable success and the data shows that are black students are feeling support. it and are finding academic success at rates not seen in recent history, unquote. students and staff say that they will take up the matter once again at the next board meeting, promising to continue push for the program to be run by the they think that they've done and, you know, with their attack on our recalls on the their elected officials. and so we can much that we can foster. but right now the main focus is finding another way to protect our black kids from these people in mill valley, theresa kron, 4 news. >> in the east bay, copper wire thieves targeted ev charging stations in pleasant hill cables that 2 of the 3 charging stations were ripped off cut off. police say this was on june first that it happened at the electrify

america stations and the safeway parking lot patterson boulevard. officers say the cables will be replaced. >> copper theft is a serious problem here in california. and today, state attorney general rob bonta announced efforts to do something about it. first charles clifford has the details. >> will statewide copper wire theft and vandalism has resulted in millions of dollars of damage. it has endangered public safety disrupted transportation and caused power outages. state attorney general rob bonta says he's now looking for ways to stop concerned about and committed to addressing. >> the widespread and growing copper theft uncover vandalism that we're seeing. >> on thursday, state attorney general rob bonta attended a roundtable in southern california to discuss copper wire theft and how to stop to talk about best practices. >> approaches that have been working and that can be scaled. >> couple wire theft is not a new problem. but in recent months there have been several

high-profile examples here in the bay area in march, teves in the south bay. still enough wire from the vta light rail system to disrupt rain service for days. then in april, thieves targeted the 85th avenue dmv office in oakland forcing the building to close for months. thieves have also caused problems for bay area schools and churches. on thursday. bonta did not provide any specific plans to address the issue. but he did say is willing to do what it takes to stop the problem. >> using all tools in the tool box is in both criminal and civil tools collaborating focus both prevention and accountability. >> there's currently a bill ab 4, 7, 6, making its way through the state legislature that if passed would put new requirements on recyclers and junk dealers who buy or sell copper. it would also increase penalties for stealing the medal. the bill recently passed the assembly with broad support is currently being reviewed by the senate. no word yet. if governor newsom supports the plan in san mateo county, charles clifford kron, 4 news.

>> in the north bay, sonoma county leaders are warning people about a dangerous upcoming wildfire season. officials say persistent dry conditions and extreme weather events have them worried. they expect to see hotter and drier weather than usual from june through august with little help from the usual coastal fog, they add heavy rains followed by a dry spring caused more dry brush to grow increasing the risk you can sign up for fire alerts in sonoma county at so co emergency dot org. visual of dryness. there's mount diablo. yeah. lawrence is here too. >> talk about the local weather. but, you know, while they are really fighting those wildfires up in canada, yes, fairly terrible in the even though it's just kind of all the smoke because the air pattern circulations is actually work its way back in the bay area this weekend. we're seeing that again today. not as bad but out there right now. little hazy in spots. we do have that onshore breeze, not as bad as it was yesterday, but still a hint of

that gray in the sky and that some of that smoke from some of those fires that continue to burn our friends to our north, but air quality around the bay area right now. you still got some hazy conditions in the san jose into parts of the oakland area and all the way into county to otherwise. we're looking pretty good. lot of green outside. i think tomorrow the good news is we're going to see a significant sea breeze overnight tonight that helps to freshen the air. the downside is boy, that, you know, a lot of that smoke has worked its way. well, thousands of feet up in the column of the atmosphere. and that means it's hard to mix out for a while to get significant change in the wind pattern. so i think overall we're going to see improvement as we head toward tomorrow in the weekend, too. here's a look at some of smoke forecast models and you can see some of that smoke kind of waftong about the bay area as we head throughout the day, kind of following that wind pattern. we've got little area of low pressure that's likely to develop off the coastline and some of that smoke will likely work its way in that circulation. so not going to be entirely smoke-free, but we are going to see a pretty significant sea breeze. we're seeing that outside right now. and that means looking pretty good as we're going to see

that onshore breeze, bringing that nice marine air helping freshen things up. and boy, it's pretty strong knowledge just along the coastline today. but you see it all the way through the delta winds to 24 miles an hour into fairfield. so little blustery in spots right now. we're gonna see that more overnight tonight and tomorrow to the fog is racing back on shore as we speak. but this weekend things are changing. i think this weekend things are going to calm down when wise we see a lot of smoke, a lot more sunshine can lead to warmer temperatures will talk more about that in a few minutes. all right. larocca thanks, lawrence. i'm very disappointed in the help you learn a >> got 4 news at 6. president trump and elon musk are having a very public falling out today. we'll take a look at the back and forth between the 2 that played out largely online. >> plus services goes very own pride. flag is recognized worldwide. we're learning the story behind the artist who created it and how a local college is now honoring him.
