>> 5 begin with breaking news. >> well, we're starting this morning. big breaking news. take a look at this. more than 100 firefighters respond to a huge fire in san francisco is actually burning multiple residential buildings. powers will tran is live in the cities in a richmond neighborhood with the latest will can you tell us what's going on? >> the numbers are actually a

little bit know we're hearing as much as 140 firefighters at its peak. and many of them are still here and we'll move our camera just to show you what it's currently doing right now. the huge flames have been knocked down and they are going through the units to make sure that the hot spots don't flare up again to cause this. let me show you video. this fire started several hours ago and my goodness, huge flames reached into the night sky to the point where they actually had to call for more firefighters and more firefighters in at the end. i as i mentioned, about 140 firefighters, multiple units have been impacted. it's so bad that actually had the call a city bus out here to pick the people inside the buses to take them to shelters because it's been hours and obviously it is cold in the overnight hours now. kind enough to join me now is san francisco fire department chief dean crispin to give us the very latest or what happened this morning.

>> warning so 2 of 4 in the morning received a report of fire in the building. if it's we dispatched a full first alarm assignment upon arrival evidence many people, the for the public back the building had a large volume of fire which appeared to be in the rear of the building and extended it to the second and 3rd buildings multiple buildings involving you said one resident had at least 8 people inside. that's what our report is. yeah. there are many occupants of the building at this point. we have 35 people being evaluated by red cross that that are potentially displaced. now, these homes basically touch each other, said the fire. i would imagine race from one unit to the next unit to the next unit. correct? so these abilities of 0 lot lines the right up against each other wood-frame strucou es. so have one side against wood siding. so one building catches on fire. highly likely that it will extend to the other if we don't get those lines in place advance of those. i think you did a great job getting people out what or anybody injured. anybody taken to the hospital to be checked

out and just continue to so at this point, no firefighter injuries, no civilian injuries. we do have are part of a lost cat were still searching for they're good. and what are you doing moving forward from this point on? so we put what's called the fire watch on this bill that we have a fire engine, a fire truck in. but i'm chief on scene throughout the night to check for hot spots and extinguish as needed. very good. thank you so much for joining us. let me show you a map of this location. we've already told you and the chief also said this happened at 5th and balboa just to give you a little perspective, golden gate park not too far away from the scene. a major thoroughfare is also fulton, which is a couple of blocks from this location. as far as the cause of the fire. obviously, it is way too early to tell. and i can tell you because of the age of the building, more than likely, according to chief. >> if they did not have butthe good news is nobody. and we're talking about 35 people displaced. nobody was injured, much less kill. it's breaking news this

morning. we're going continue to check in with you throughout the morning. >> thank you for that report. >> we have very good news that it sounds like everyone got out of there. we are seeing conditions this morning that are cool and a little bit cloudy to even foggy out in the richmond district. winds right now, not too terribly aggressive either. here's your view at sfo. once the sun comes up, you'll be able to see that. we do have quite a lot of cloud cover overhead. that blanket of grey quite familiar at this point. and it isn't rooting back inland with pretty familiar fealty yesterday. much more dense across the north bay, the coast and settling into san pablo bay. where is comparatively clear conditions further south this afternoon, we grow sunny yet again. now winds right now are actually not too terribly strong, nor much of an onshore breeze right now actually coming out of the south and a lot of areas we are going to be looking at a day today that is going to still be moderated by cool coastal breeze, especially along the bay shore and the coast inland areas.

>> i don't know why they detained even the children making them sleep on the floor in the cold hungry. it is an injustice. what they're doing and i don't know why they do that to the children. >> well, this morning, doesn't know what happened to them since immigration attorneys say some of the families are in route to an ice detention center on in texas. others of us into a center in the central valley. all the peninsula. foster city police say they've arrested a driver was not only driving under the influence of alcohol, they actually bottle tequila in the car. police say they made that arrest after responding to a collision at edgewater park. you can actually see the suv seriously damaged a fence. police did not say if the driver was hurt in that. 2.13, year-old teens in custody for allegedly yelling homophobic slurs, on fireworks into a crowd at annual pride event in redwood city. 7 of the courthouse square right near marshall street in downtown redwood city on wednesday. police are saying one of the 2 victims as minor injuries. the

2 teens were arrested and taken to the san mateo county youth services center. well, new this morning, a former ucsf professor now suing the university for allegedly violating her first amendment rights. doctor mira. so she was fired because she spoke out in support of palestinian people. doctor meyer claims she endured a year's long pattern of racist discrimination, retaliation and harassment from ucsf officials before she was fired. she also says she was the target of threats and online comments including alleged harassment by california state senator scott wiener. students and teachers and san francisco are now fighting against the trump administration's effort to dismantle job corps. it's federal program. it gives housing job training for low-income students. federal judge this week blocked the trump administration's effort shut down job corps. but the ruling is only temporary last announcement by the trump administration to pause operations of job corps has already resulted in more than

200 students, treasure island being sent away. only 100 remain. that also includes a 19 year-old eddie lopez. he says that before you came to job corps, he had no place to live and a limited education view, job prospects and really no direction in life. >> being your job corps. i have grown so much. much more than i ever thought was possible. i've learned different soft skills while also getting hands-on experience in my trade. but most importantly, i've gotten a second chance on my future. >> well, the trump administration initially planet in the program by the end of month, it will be a hearing in 2 weeks. today's action, the last day of a san francisco marin, food bank's pop-up pantries in san francisco and marin county. there closing all 13 pantries as pandemic care program start to end. we do see critical food safety net programs. more than 6500 household. at a time when families really need it

at the same time, the food bank is urging elected officials to reject proposed cuts to snap benefits because he critically impact. 9 million americans nationwide. a federal judge now 7 in on the removal of a homeless encampment berkeley, judge edward chen is that you place a temporary pause on the removal process. police and city crews. they all descended on the homeless encampment at asian harrison on wednesday morning. they started clear now people's belongings, intent items were hauled by a dump truck. now most items are back in place. but city officials argue this encampment is a safety hazard with rats, needles and combustible materials. the most recent homeless count shows out of approximately 845 people in berkeley, a little more than half of them do not have shelter. a coalition of mayors from california's 13 largest cities, including san francisco. mayor. they're urging the governor and members of the legislature not

to cut a local homeless is funding. the mayor says they're concerned uses proposed budget. as of now does not extend 1 billion dollars in funding for local homeless housing assistance, along with grants, also known as happ, according to data from the big city mayors, coalition have fun to state tribute to local government over the last few years resulting in a combined 17,000 shelter beds serving more than 150,000 people nationwide about this funding. >> we alone in san francisco stand to lose 1000 shelter beds we as san franciscans in california we need to move forward, not backward. >> well, governor newsom said difficult decisions our head is the state faces a 12 billion dollar deficit in response to the mayor's. a newsom spokesperson writing this in part, quote, california has made unprecedented investments to support local cities and counties investing more than 27 billion to help them

address homelessness. it's time for local governments to step up and do their jobs. the deadline for newsom and that legislature to pass a balanced budget is june 15th. meanwhile, governor newsom announced the plan to boost literacy area. literacy achievement for california students. golden state literacy plan will deploy over 1000 literacy coaches and specialists to schools and have the highest need. it's gonna build off current existing effort on literacy, education, including recruiting, also retaining educators. governor newsom is saying, quote, literacy is the pathway to success. all of california's kids deserve to discover the joys and benefits of reading and the power to formulate and express their ideas. all right. still ahead, a community in the north bay is keeping up the fight after a school board. >> woakes to cut support services for black students. and privacy concerns in the east bay, as officials say they're tracking the real-time

take a look at this. more than 100 firefighters are on scene. a huge fire in san francisco. it's burning multiple residential buildings. members will tran is live in cities in a richmond neighborhood with the latest. well. >> well, right now, firefighters at the very least can breathe a little bit because for several hours, they had their hands full moon, as you mention, for residential buildings. we will zoom in and show you the damage. firefighters of the past 90 minutes or so. they have been going through the building's punching holes, letting it ventilate and also keeping out. i look out for hot spots. you don't see any huge flames, but this is what happened in the overnight hours. the fire started around 2 o'clock in the morning and it raced through the buildings because the building's pretty much touch each other. if you know, san francisco, you know, there is no room between the homes. so the fire went from one building to the next building to the next building

and ultimately damaged, if not destroyed, at least 4 buildings at this particular point. they don't know the cause of the fire, but it was so hot. so intense that at least 35 people had to rush out in the overnight hours just to save their lies. they had to call in a san francisco city bus, put them on the city bus to give them and then ultimately drive them to a shelter. here is an update. if you saw my live interview at 5 o'clock in the morning, they were looking for a cat. they have since found that cat and that that that cat savvy has died from the smoke or the flames. and also the update is one firefighter during the battle was injured by twisting his ankle. he is being checked out and possibly even taken to the hospital for his injuries. let me quickly show you a map misses at 5th and balboa. it talked about theer richmond district. t far away from golden gate park.

fulton is a main thoroughfare r as the firefighters at the height of this, they had about 140 firefighters fighting this. they are starting to scale down just a bit. but of course, because they have taken up and tire 5th between erie and bolton. you cannot drive through at this particular time. and of course, they will be here throughout the day looking for hot spots and ultimately it's too early right now. but ultimately send investigators inside to find out the cause of the fire. in fact, going out to those families impacted by all of this. >> thank you for that. >> well, has not been the windiest the morning. so a bit of good news there. we are seeing yet again, another foggy impact in some low gray up and down the coastline. staying in san francisco. you can see this live view right now. some of that low gray that is hanging out with us mostly above the city. we do have a bit of coastal drizzle
